Am I the only one surprised by this? Why keep him? His best days are obviously behind him.
As I have called for since last October, I say start Kellen Clemens! You don’t know how well he can do yet, because you haven’t given him a fair chance. Filling in for an injury does not count.
The Jets did draft him in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft to replace Pennington if the season did not go the way they hoped. Well, Pennington miraculously saved his job by leading the Jets to a 9-7 year, and making it to the playoffs, where they lost in the Wild Card Round to New England.
This past season, Clemens saw some time, but not enough to get a solid idea of how well he can do in the pros.
I have a couple suggestions to throw out at the Mangenius, Eric Mangini, the Snitch of Snitches.
First, you could trade him to Chicago for their second-round draft pick and Cedric Benson. Benson needs to start over somewhere new, and Chad ain’t doing the Jets any good by sinking up the joint.
Or…
You could reasonably ask for the Vikings second-round pick and TE, Visanthe Shiancoe or Jim Kleinsasser; each could easily be a filler-in for OL on occasion if needed.
I've had the chance to watch Kellen for 4 years at Oregon. He's solid. Good arm, good decision making and a leader. Give him a chance and the Jet fans will love him. When he broke his leg his senior season he never missed a beat. Was at all the agmes and practices encouraging the younger players. He showed me a lot during his lowest point in his career.
degraff- I was hoping someone like you or kellyscott would see this and give me an idea of how his college career went. I thought you guys were from Oregon. Not sure, though. Thanks for dropping by!
blue@orange- Agreed. If you want to at least attmpt to fool defenses, put in the new guy.
Let me ask this. Why would we want to trade Benson, who we went through all the #### we did, and a 2nd round draft pick for Chad?
We already made an incredibly horrible trade to the jets when we got rid of Thomas Jones. We should've gotten rid of Benson then, but for some odd reason, we got rid of the wrong RB.
And...why would we want pennington? We already have to deal with Grossman, and then "tried" Griese. We don't need another washed up QB, we just need to work on the 2 that we have.
let's see. Clemens had nearly the whole season. How is this not enough time? He ended with one of the worst QB ratings in the NFL. How is this promising? So Chad doesn't have a long balld. So? He has what Clemens doesn't, which is experience and intelligence. Also accuracy, a great pass fake, and awareness of his strengths - you don't need a long ball when dead accurate completing the short pass. He also took the Jets to the playoffs for the first time in how many years? But as usual in New York, those things are quickly forgotten. Until the O line is overhauled, any QB is going to do poorly, and Clemens is going to end up injured just like all who came before. A good arm isnt worth much when a guy is on his back. Did you guys just miss the entire last season? The "new guy"? Give him "a chance"?? He had it.
I'm surprised they didn't trade Pennington too, because a lot of teams could use a smart vet, Chicago included. Though I'm not sure how a phenomenal comeback from injury and the highest completion ratio in history is "stinking up the joint" - apparently Mangini recognizes that it's important to have a vet in the role of teacher, a la Vinnie.
Seriously. Kleinsasser? And you think a guy is worthless yet you want a 2nd rounder for him? Who taught you about trades, Belichick?
