NFC North Without Favre
Mar 06, 2008 | 12:58PM | report this

So, Brett Favre's retirement was released to the press yesterday morning, and I was devastated when I got on my computer at work and saw that, right here on the FOX Sports homepage.

Well, anyways, this blog is about discussing how the rest of the NFC North will do now that Favre has officially retired.

Here's what I think.

Green Bay Packers (13-3)

After losing Favre, the Packers now apparently turn to Aaron Rodgers as the new QB. I think he is very capable of leading the Packers, but I'm pretty sure that it will take him a few years in order to get fully prepared to lead this team into the post-season.

RB Ryan Grant is one of the most surprising emerging stars in the game since this past season. The running game had a HUGE question mark around it all year until about the Dallas game, which is when Grant and Morency established the ground attack, which was pretty formidable, in my opinion, and it will remain so next year.

But, it comes down to the fact that Rodgers might not have the gunslinger mentality like Favre had, and that may cause the Pack to revamp their entire offensive scheme come next year. The running game will probably need to be great from the get-go to take some of the pressure of replacing the 2nd or 3rd greatest QB of all-time off of Aaron Rodgers.

He has some pretty big-time guys catching the passes for him, though, in Donald’s Lee and Driver, along with breakout star, Greg Jennings. It will all come down to how Rodgers handles the offense. This, mark my words, will be the HARDEST division to predict by far for this coming season, barring Favre stays retired, which I believe he will.

Mike Greenspire’s Projected Record for 2008: 10-6

Detroit Lions (7-9)

The Lions were off to a surprising 6-2 start, scratching their name into mid-season playoff contention. What only the Lions could allow to happen, happened in the second half of the season, and completed their 2007 campaign 1-7, finalizing a 7-9 record into the books.

WTF?

How could anyone feed their players such #### that they come out and just suck eggs the rest of the year? Unbelievable. Well, perhaps not for the Lions.

Jon Kitna is probably one of the loudest guys on that team, basically guaranteeing 10 wins in 2007. Then, after win #6, he had this to say:

"Let's get one thing straight: I never actually guaranteed 10 wins! I just said that it would be a huge disappointment if we didn't get that many"

Well, at least we know one thing: Kitna knows that he's playing for the Lions, the only team in the NFL that could collapse faster than a bridge made out of toothpicks with Rosie sitting on it.

Kevin Jones is a fairly decent running back, in a fairly horrible situation, which is why he doesn't get talked about as much. I think if he could stay healthy for the entire 16 weeks this season, the Lions might have better than a snowball's chance in an oven.

The Lions cut starting DT, Shaun Rogers to the Browns for some crappy pick. Whoops, there goes another one. Despite all of his failed drug tests, I think they should have kept him. After all, Barry Sanders failed several drug tests in his career, but see, they needed him more, so it's not as bad, get it? NO! Hypocrites.

BOTTOM LINE: The Lions need a hug signing period and draft to be considered by me as contenders next year, but for now, they look like chumps to me, and will finish at the bottom of the division next year.

There's always next year, as Matt Millen, the clown/#### running things over there.

Mike Greenspire’s Projected Record for 2008: 6-10

Chicago Bears (7-9)

The Bears were in the Super Bowl a little over 13 months ago, but finished this season with an extremely disappointing drop to 7-9. How did it happen? As fellow sports writer, Jay Marriotti for the Chicago Tribune might say, Turn-oversaurus Rex, which was hilarious when I heard it. New nickname!

Anyways, Rex Grossman finished his season with only 4 TDs and 7 INTs, a completion % of only 54 % with a passer rating of 66.4. To say that he was the only reason the Bears collapsed this season would be overlooking the rest of the team’s misfortunes.

RBs Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson (the one you don’t hear about) had some really poor seasons on the ground stacked into just one. The running game isn’t the primary concern for Chicago though, if they wish to return to the playoffs.

In my opinion, the fact that they don’t have a good QB to start for them is the big concern right now in Chi Town. The Bears own the 14th pick in the draft in April, and it would be insane to trade it, and it doesn’t appear that they are gonna make a move for Brian Brohm in the 1st Round, having signed Rex to a 1-year deal.

They could be planning to do what I would do with the draft. Here’s my philosophy for a team with a struggling QB:

Get the highest recruited OLineman coming out of college left when you’re on the clock. Build an OLine around your current QB, and if he can’t make plays with good protection, get the highest ranked QB coming out of college and into the draft in the next year’s draft.

However, even I doubt that the Bears are that clever, and will probably go with a RB; someone powerful like Rashard Mendenhaal from Illinois, right out of their own state, or perhaps an elusive back like Jonathan Stewart from Oregon. Calculating these things is extremely hard, and I have no clue who Chicago wants. They haven’t quite made it clear where they want to rebuild first. Their defense doesn’t need any help, it was able to shut down Favre twice, and I doubt that a WR is what they are considering. Despite releasing Pro Bowler, Muhsin Muhammad, the Bears have already signed free agent Marty Booker from the Dolphins. They traded away Griese, he was obviously getting them nowhere. They signed Rex, and extended Orton. So, all I see for them to build on is their weak OLine, and the RB position could be allowed to be addressed later in the draft. There are so many talented players at RB this season in the draft, they wouldn’t need to worry about waiting until the third or fourth round to pick one up.

Mike Greenspire’s Projected Record for 2008: 9-7

Minnesota Vikings (8-8)

After starting 3-6, the Vikings won 5 straight, to put themselves in a good position to get into the playoffs. However, they lost their last two games, knocking them out of contention completely.

The Vikings, of course, have rookie sensation, Adrian Peterson as their RB, with Chester Taylor providing relief. QB, Tavaris Jackson's job seems to be on the line now that there are some good QBs in the upcoming draft, and two of them that the Vikes might be interested in are Delaware's Joe Flacco, and Michigan's Chad Henne, with their second round pick. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to establish a better passing game with one of these two, rather than the less dynamic, and somewhat boring Jackson.

The Vikings have the divisions of the AFC South and the NFC South on their schedule for next year, along with an NFC West team and NFC East team. They also play their own division twice, of course.

I see the Vikings being the team to beat now in the NFC North. I think Rodgers is a very good QB, but he'll need more time to get an actual feel for the game before getting the Packers team to the post-season. For now, my pick to win the North in '08 is the Vikes.

Mike Greenspire’s Projected Record for 2008: 11-5

Detroit is gonna have a winning record and make the playoffs. We have signed good solid young guys in their primes in the secondary. All Detroit need now is a good O-lineman and a middle linebacker and we are set to go. Already have a great coaching staff that I believe can overcome Millens idiocy.

Really? Wow! Who do you have them taking in the 1st Round?

Personally, I have them taking Chad Henne, but I probably need to fix that.

Take care!

toro1920- See, here's the problem I have with your comment. You say "we" giving it away that you are a Lions fan, who looks towards the future 24/7, because your team sucks so bad. They can't do anything to impress me at this point, and saying that by firing Mike Martz you will be better is pure overconfidence. Can you name the new Off.-Coord. they have? Me neither.

They ARE NOT making the playoffs. I doubt a winning season is in store.

Hi Mike...

It's really hard to tell just what Aaron Rodgers will do. If history means anything, and usually it does, Rodgers is another of the Jeff Tedford crew of QBs... That crew includes David Carr, Kyle Boller and Trent Dilfer. I'm hoping for Packer fans that this is the exception to that rule but it remains to be seen.

This suddenly becomes the division without a single premier quarterback and that equates to a #### shoot. Two teams with good>great defenses (Packers and Bears), one team with a good>great running game trying to build a defense and a big question mark at QB(Vikings) and one team with an on again off again offense and very little defense (Lions).

Prediction?

Packers 10-6
Vikings 9-7
Bears 8-8
Lions 7-9

Looks like parity to me! If someone catches a couple of breaks it could all change but I don't think any of these teams will run off and hide...

Dwindy- Picks sound alright, not out of line at all. Good point about there being no premiere QB in the NFC North. I still think the Vikes have a better shot at it then the Packers, because I think that it will be a rebuilding and remodeling year for the Packers' offense.

Apparently, JOKERSWILD thinks so too. 13-3? WOW! Big predictions! We'll see what happens.

Take care!

Yeah and his name is Jim Colletto. He was the oline coach when Jamal Lewis broke the season record for rushing that Dickerson once held. He has stated that Detroit will no longer use seven step drops that really stress the O-line and go to 3-5 step drops to help get the ball out and create less sacks this way. He is looking for way more balance as well with rushing the football. He will also allow Kitna to call audibles at the line of scrimmage. These are all good things that needed to be done. Martz was just another big name hire by millen to try to give validation to his run as the worst GM ever. His philosiphy and scheme never fit in Detroit cause we don't have the personnel, then again nobody does like the Rams had from 99-01. Detroit-playoffs in 08!

toro- Does it surprise you that I have never heard of the guy?Besides, you point out that he helped Jamal Lewis break the rushign record. That was Jamal Lewis, not Kevin Jones. H'e snowhere near that level of play yet, and I doub the ever will be.

The OLine could use a new coach, but even that won't save them. The only 3-5 you will be seeing fro Detroit is their record, probably worse at the midpoint of the season. They have a legit shot, but I can gurantee that they will find a way to blow it, like always. 10-22 in the 2006 and 2007 seasons combined is pitiful, and by the end of next year, they will onctinue to disappoint, and continue on as one of the worst franchises in the history of the NFL.

Yeah i'm not sure where this guy gets his info. I do not recall Sanders ever having failed a drug test. Do yourself a favor mike and quit trying to be like Jim Rome and shooting your mouth off like him. Colletto is a good coach and was Baltimores OLine coach with Lewis. Jones and Lewis are completely different guys and i'm not a Jones guy anyway. I like Matt Forte' out of Tulane. He ran an official 4.46 at the combine at 225Lb's and is a terrific north-south guy that makes a helluva nice cut. You assume to much about people and read into things that are not there.

Not that I can ever remember Mike. That guy would need nothing extra anyhow. I cannot even concievably imagine a circumstance where the most talented back of all time would take any kind of illegal sports supplement or roid. What do you think the steelers chances are for an AFC championship and super bowl appearance. Thats a tough area with the Jags adding some real high quality guys and of course the Pats and Colts still being teams to beat? Faneca was a tough loss, but he got way too much money and years. He's a great lineman and all, durable and nasty, but he is in his thirties. I can't blame Pittsburgh for letting him walk, with all the stupid money getting thrown around this year.

That was only Jackson's first year as a full time starter. As long as the play calling and formations dont get predictable Jackson will improve. It jist seemed as if in some games that Childress and OC Bevell got predictable and had no imagination. We did try a fake field goal in one game in which we were winng by two scores so I guess that's gutsy, or not.

Without Favre, it's like the streaker getting tackled by a cricket player! LOL! Aside from Vikings Peterson, there isn't a face for the conference. Urlacher has been their image aside from Favre.

My brother is a big time Vikings fan. He thinks they should trade for Brady Quinn and make a run for a title. Never in the history of the Vikings did they have a genuine QB-RB in the back field at the same time.

toro- Yeah, I'd have to say I don't like the chances much. I'd like them better if we played in the NFC, no offense to them, but it seems easier for teams there to win in the post-season when they aren't supposed to. Oh well. Take care!

bamaboy- Yeah, not exactly gutsy when you're up by 14. I doubt that Jakcon's their man, but we'll see.

dues4pac10- That's a good rumor to start. I wonder if thye would give up Taylor from the backfield for him?

Enjoy your weekend!

slshusker - or should I say, "Dude!" ??

Put down the joint and read the article again. He didn't pick ANY NFC North team to finish with 13 wins in '08. You're apparently referring to the Packers; he cited their 13 win total in '07, before predicting they'd slip to 10-6 in the coming season.
