True Shot, Not Long Shot
Apr 22, 2008 | 5:11PM | report this
In the $6Billion business that is the NFL, there is very little room for patience.  As veteran players get older and new, young players get richer, the pressure to produce a winning product grows greater and greater with each passing season.  This is clearly evidenced by the now routine coaching carousel that consumes TV network analysts and web bloggers alike.  Win and you're in.  Lose and get lost.

So it’s with a sense of pleasant surprise the Miami Dolphins chose the path of patience – also known as rebuilding – and came to terms with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long to make him the number one pick in this weekend’s draft.  Sure, there aren’t many sexy picks in this year’s selection as there have been in recent years, but the temptation is always there to go with the big name or rising star with the number one overall pick.

By any account, Jake Long is not the best player in this draft.  Hands down, Darren McFadden is the best athlete of the crop, if not the best player, and Matt Ryan is clearly the top QB of the bunch.  Glen Dorsey or Chris Long would make great additions to a stellar yet aging Dolphins defense.  Instead, Team President Bill Parcells, General Manager Jeff Ireland and Head Coach Tony Sparano decided to lay the foundation for what they hope will be an offense that is able to score more than just 17 points per game (26th overall in the NFL in 2007).

By selecting Long, the Dolphins are showing they’re committed to fixing their offensive problems long term.  More importantly, Long’s selection at left tackle grants the Fins some flexibility to shift players along the O-Line, and provides second-year quarterback John Beck with an added sense of security that he won’t get killed from his blind side.

The early signing also has other GM’s around the league smiling, knowing the spending ceiling has now been set by the Dolphins.  Long’s 5-year, $57.75 million contract ($30 million of which is guaranteed) is extraordinary when you consider his per year average is about $200k more than last year’s number one overall pick Jamarcus Russell.  True, Russell held out with the Raiders and most likely settled for his contract in order to sign and obtain some playing time in 2007.  Nevertheless, Russell is a 6’6”, 255lb franchise-type quarterback capable of throwing the ball 60 yards from his knees.  Long is simply a good, solid player and there’s no way to compare the overall value of an offensive lineman unless his name is Jim Langer, Larry Little or Dwight Stephenson.

I hope my fellow DolFans will show the same patience this year as the organization appears to be showing now.  There is no realistic expectation of a winning season for Miami in 2008, especially when you consider that 2-14 would be a 100% improvement from last year.  That being said, the only thing to do is wait and watch as Parcells and his disciples put together building block after building block and restore a tradition of winning to South Florida.

I agree with what you said. Patience is a virtue uncommon to the NFL.

On a random note, from a Broncos fan to a fins fan ... one of my favorite moments from the 07 season was Camarillo's OT TD against Baltimore when the team, coaches and fans went berzerk for their first win. I thought that was cool.

Gil...everything good in football starts with good blocking. The running game, the passing game, field position and keeping your d off the field all start with the offensive lines ability to control the line of scrimmage and keeping your qb's butt off the turf. Miami has made an excellent decision by picking and signing the best off lineman in the draft. If given the time, Parcells will have Miami competetive again. Good luck.

As much as I wanted to see a exciting QB or RB, this makes sense. Brady would have stunk up the field with the offensive line the Dolphins had last year. We all saw what a little pressure did during the Super Bowl to Mr. Big Shot.
Thank you Giants!

Gil...I do agree with you, the NFL lacks the patience that it used to have with both teams and players. Being a Dallas fan, I am a strong believer in what Bill Parcells can do for a struggling organization if he is correctly given the reigns. I think that Jake Long was the absolute best pick for this team because it allows Carey to move over to the right side where he is more comfortable giving Ronnie Brown some room to run. The next issue that needs to be addressed here is a QB and whether or not Ginn is going to be their star reciever.

I've noticed a lot of Dolphin fans posting that they are upset that the Fins didn't pick-up Matt Ryan or Darren McFadden. That surprises me, because I think that drafting Jake long shows the most commitment to long-term success. Sure, McFadden is great, but RB might actually be a stronger point for the Dolphins. And does anyone want to see Matt Ryan thrown out with no protection to become the next David Carr? Of course not. Besides, Ryan might be good, but he's not a Peyton Manning or Carson Palmer that has to be taken first. Hey, I'm a Bears fan, but I like the Dolphins and I always pull for the Fins to succeed. And I think that they made to right pick to get back to the year-in year-out winning seasons that they had for so long.

GIL,
The dolphins neede a strong secure left side whether it be left or right tackle he plays when the season starts will be determined then,I also believe that having long, carey and others makes this offensive line 100% better then last year and see what ronnie did with that offense before he got hurt, makes me wonder with some more tweaking or deal making, this just could be a turnaround year.I know this is early but giving some descent players whether by draft or free agency this will be a better team next year.Prediction 8-8.Have faith dolphin fans and the wins follow...

the dolphins first correct move was to hire coach parcells..his ability to surround himself with quality football people that will access all current needs and translate that into acquring the appropriate personnel to meet those needs will be their main objective..those that do not suit-up and play to his standards will not be around very long. his understanding of how the game should be played has brought success to several teams and even after his departure, teams have remained successfull to a certain extent. but, do not blink an eye, he will not be around for very long..as soon as the dolphins become competetive again, so long FINS....

Gil- you have every right to be excited about your team's future. I wouldn't say a .500 record (or something close to it) is out of the question this year, considering your division. I've been a lifelong Giants fan and still rue the day Parcells left. You have a solid management team in place and you're building from the inside out, so it's only a matter of time.

Another issue that is only a matter of time is the rookie salary structure. Deflating it will be one of the owners' top priorities for the new bargaining agreement. The NBA has the right idea. The NFL should look to their model.
