The San Francisco Giants declined to offer salary arbitration to Barry Bonds before Friday night's deadline, prompting his agent to say the team has not made bringing the slugger back a priority.

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO AVOID DEALING WITH THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF BASEBALL AND NEGLECTING THE POSITIVE SIDE - THE NEW PLAYERS WHO ARE BRINGING BACK CREDIBILITY TO THE SPORT - BUT IF SEEING THAT THERE IS NO "GIANT" MARKET FOR AN AGING CRACKHEAD, IS SURPRISING, I HAVE TO WONDER IF THE AGENT IS A CRACKHEAD TOO.
I AM NOT HAPPY WITH MYSELF FOR MENTIONING THIS GUY, I HAVE FAILED TO IGNORE HIM, AS I SHOULD HAVE; SO, PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME COMMENTING ON THIS NOTE -- I REGRET EVEN POSTING IT.
Okay...I'm going to lay my disclaimer out there now...I am a Barry Bonds fan. Okay...let the bashing begin, but here we go.

Personally, I don't think the Giants are trying to say they don't want Bonds back next season by not offering arbitration, under the old system it would mean that he couldn't talk with the Giants to re-sign until May 1. With the new system he could re-sign tomorrow or anytime between now and Easter.
Personally, I still think Barry will be back in a Giants' uniform next season. Not at the salary he was making before, but he'll be back. The Giants need Barry's name on the marquee to draw sell-out crowds all season as he chases Aaron's home run record. Especially with the All-Star game in San Francisco this season.
Plus with the the Giants recent moves, re-signing Ray Durham, bring back Rich Aurilia and signing Dave Roberts the team hasn't shown any efforts to get younger in order to contend. At this point, why not re-up with Barry for one more season and tons of money. It seems like a win-win for both sides.
