Texas A&M Aggies in ESPN's Bottom 10 --- Again!
Oct 14, 2008 | 3:53PM | report this

Aggies Hit Bottom!

The poor hapless Texas A&M Aggies have hit bottom... ESPN's Bottom 10 that is.

Aggie Coach Mike Sherman has made No. 4 on CoachesHotSeat.

This is the second time this season the Aggies were bestowed this dubious title. They were awarded the "honor" after week one when they fell to the nobodies from Arkansas State.

The sorry hopeless Aggies (2-4, 0-2 Big 12) will serve up their backsides for a butt kicking this weekend against the No. 7 Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-0, 2-0 Big 12). This is a game between the best and the worst. It will be a test of the mean against the meek...the pushers against the pushovers.

In two weeks, Mike Sherman & Co. has given up 100 points. A 100 POINTS! Hey Joe Kines! Where is that defense? Just think ole Joe could have been sipping mint juleps in Tuscaloosa, if he hadn't taken on this gig! Sorry Joe!

The Texas A&M Aggies Are in Free Fall
Oct 14, 2008 | 3:50PM | report this

The Texas A&M Aggies are in freefall.

The hapless Aggies (2-4, 0-2 Big 12) have allowed 100 points in the past two games against Big 12 middle dwellers. Saturday they will face the sixth highest scoring team in the country, the Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-0, 2-0 Big 12).

The game will be at Kyle Field in College Station.

The Aggies are rated 89th on Covers.com ratings for gamblers. Jeff Sagarin rates the Aggies No. 104, last in the high-octane Big 12. Why does this Blogger mention these off-the-wall ratings services? The Aggies are so far off the radar screen they may as well be on the dark side of the moon.

The Raiders don't have that problem. They are No. 11 on Sagarin, No. 7 in the AP and the Harris polls and No. 5 in the USA Today poll.

There is no doubt why the Aggies are so sorry. Look at the head coach. Head Coach Mike Sherman came to A&M from the lackluster Houston Texans. Before that, he was given the bums rush by the Green Bay Packers.

Defensive Coordinator Joe Kines comes from Alabama where he was in retirement. If not for this gig, then ole Joe to be sipping mint juleps in Tuscaloosa right now.

Now the Aggies face the league's leading offense, Texas Tech, in College Station. Ole Joe admitted Monday that the Aggies need a 14-inch deluge to help slow down the Tech passing game which averages 413 yards of passing and 556 total. The Raiders score 46 points per game.

The Aggies are a 21-point dog on covers.com. Maybe mongrel would better describes the Ags. The match up goes to Tech.

Hey Joe! Maybe you better throw in another hurricane, too! What do you say?

Hey Aggies! Cheer up! We have great in equestrian, women's soccer, and women's volleyball teams. Whoopee!

Did you know that some person name, Bri, scored in the 80th minute and helped the seventh ranked women's soccer team beat Baylor, 1-0? Whoopee!

No offense, Bri, but 80,000 people drive across this state each week to see the Aggie football games. I have never seen a woman's "field hockey" game, but I bet the stands are stuffed with friends and families.

The Aggie Athletic Director "Dollar" Bill Byrne ran over the curb and jammed a big piece of concrete under his car. That was worth mentioning in his weekly blog? Well! If I were $Bill I would want to change the subject, too

One theme for his blogs this year is "Be patient"?. Yeah! Right!

Here's one for $Bill: I am making $Bill the TOW. The "O" means of. The "W" means week. The "T" mean...?

You guessed it! If you don't get it, look at the image. Now! Do you get it?

If this blogger were a third team player on any program in this league, then this blogger would be looking forward to the Aggie game. Oklahoma or Texas or Tech will go out and run up the score in the first half and put their teams on cruise control. Every player on the roster will get a chance to play! Whoopee!

Texas A&M facing The Perfect Storm?
Sep 18, 2008 | 2:35PM | report this

Aggies Face The Perfect Storm?

The Texas A&M Aggies (1-1) are coming off of a bye-week and desperately in need of calmer waters. They won't get it this weekend. The University of Miami Hurricanes (1-1) will blow into town like Ike did last week.

The Aggies are looking for answers.

First, who will start at quarterback? Starter Stephen McGee, who has started 29 straight games, may miss this one. He is rehabilitating an injury to his right (throwing) shoulder. Head Coach Mike Sherman told reporters this week that he won't decide until Saturday.

If McGee cannot go, then the duty falls to sophomore Jerrod Johnson. The backup QB stepped in cold against New Mexico to guide the Aggies to three first half touchdowns on the way to a 28-22 victory. Johnson threw three TD passes and had no interceptions.

More questions swirl around Tailback Michael Goodson's injured knee. Goodson was sidelined during the last game. Sherman says he will be ready to go.

The most serious concern may be quarterback-turned- wide- receiver Ryan Tannehill. He injured his ankle against New Mexico, leaving the Aggies in a desperate need for capable pass catchers. Tannehill leads the pass receivers with six catches for 116 yards.

Fullback Jorvoskie Lane needs one touchdown to move ahead of all Aggies in that category. He has 44 touchdowns and is tied with Darren Lewis (87-90). Lane has carried for seven times for 19 years on this season.

Lane desperately needs to step in and play fullback, Sherman told reporters this week. Second string FB Anthony Vela is out with an injury. That leaves only a freshman to play fullback.

Sherman may have used his bye-week to hunt for his missing offense. So far this season, the Aggies have out-scored the opposition 37-10 in the first half. However, the second half the Aggies were pummeled 30-7. Sherman's West Coast offense has yet to score a third-quarter point.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes showed they are a tough team. They were down 9-3 against fourth ranked Florida at the end of the third quarter two weeks ago. Florida's Heisman Trophy winner QB Tim Tebow piled on 17 points in the fourth to pull away.

Both teams have not been able to put up large offensive numbers this year. The Aggies pass defense has allowed 157 yards per game. The opponents haven't had to pass on the Aggies since their rush defense is so porous.

The Aggies need to find a way to defend Miami's superior athleticism. Last year, that superiority was demonstrated when the Canes rolled up a 31-0 lead before they emptied their bench.

If the Aggies can't find a way to slow down the Hurricanes and fail to jump-start their second half offense, it will be a long day at Kyle Field. Miami is a four-point favorite.

Jerrod Johnson is the Aggie QB of the future
Sep 09, 2008 | 5:48AM | report this

The Aggies have found a quarterback for the future.

He’s Jerrod Johnson, who stepped into the first quarter of the Texas A&M-New Mexico game when starter Stephen McGee suffered a separated shoulder.

Johnson engineered a touchdown on his first drive.   The sophomore from the Houston area threw three touchdown passes in leading the Aggies to victory, 28-22.

It was the first three-touchdown performance by any Aggie quarterback since 2006.   That is big task considering that the Aggies are playing without any proven front line receivers.

Of course, the young receivers stepped up, too.  Freshman wide receiver Jeff Fuller hauled in two touchdowns.  Fuller leaped over the defender to grab his second TD of the day.

Johnson came in cold and showed a spark of magic that the Aggies have lacked under failed Coach Dennis Franchione’s option-guy, McGee.

Johnson finished the day with 124 yards.  He was 10-of-19.  Johnson faced a horrendous pass rush.  He threw no interceptions.

He started the game as tight end.  He caught one pass to keep the first quarter drive alive.  He was hit as the ball arrived, but he held on for a first down.

Message to Coach Mike Sherman:  This will be a down year for the Aggies.  Why not let McGee be a backup.   Johnson can gather valuable game experience and be ready to step in next year.

Do the Texas Aggies have the Bama Curse?
Sep 06, 2008 | 10:53AM | report this
The Dreaded Bama Curse!

The last time the Aggies hired a football coach from the University of Alabama, they got an almost fatal infection of the DREADED BAMA CURSE.

The curse ravaged the campus and the vast right wing majority of alumni alike.

Before it ran it course, the Aggie football record was in a shambles and Aggie Alumni were lined up in a Circular Firing Squad.

Now comes Coach Joe Kines....

The Aggies hired Joe out of Alabama. He was said to have a fast-talking rock 'em sock 'em style of defense.

It sounded great to Aggies who were starved for the return of the days of the Wrecking Crew defense.

So what did Joe's defense do against Sun Belt Conference middle dweller Arkansas State? The Aggies got steam rolled, 18-14!

OH! Yes! That last Arky State TD was telling. The Arky Red Wolves stuffed' Joe's defense up the middle.

Was it because of the DREADED BAMA CURSE?

Wheels fall off of Sherman's offense
Sep 02, 2008 | 2:56PM | report this
A&M Coach Mike Sherman's Offense on Training Wheels Aggies will need to acquire a sense of humor.  Although there is nothing funny about what happened Saturday at Kyle Field.

Arkansas State defeated Texas A&M 18-14 and ruined Mike Sherman’s debut as head coach.    No analyst expected the Aggies to be awesome this year.  No one expected the wheels to drop off of Sherman’s West Coast offense so soon.

Sherman has no excuse for losing.   He came to Aggieland after coaching at the Green Bay Packers and as an offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.   He fielded a team loaded with freshmen, but Arkansas State had just as many freshmen on their two-deep line up.

The difference was the intensity and the lack of mistakes on ASU’s part.  The Aggies turned the ball over four times, twice on fumbles and twice on interceptions.   Aggie quarterback Stephen McGee was sacked four times.   He was sacked for a 17 yard loss to start off the third quarter.  The offense never recovered from that sack.  It went on to record only 109 yards in 29 plays.

Massive fullback Jorvorskie Lane was a non-factor.  He entered the game twice to block.  He was not available in the third quarter to punch it over when the Aggies were second down and goal on the two yard line.  Instead, Sherman went with Goodson who lost a yard.  The next play McGee was sacked for a five-yard loss.  Sherman settled for a field goal attempt by Richie Bean, who missed wide right.

It was a terrible debut for quarterback McGee as a drop back passer.  He lost 29 yards on four sacks.  He was intercepted two times.  He passed for 170 on 19 completions on 27 passes.

All the Arkansas State points came off of Aggie mistakes.   Wide receiver Howard Morrow fumbled on a third and six in the third at the Aggie 47.  That led to an 27 yard ASU field goal by Josh Arauco.   The Aggies responded on the ensuing kickoff by going three and out.

The best drive of the night started at 12:17 in the fourth quarter.  After a penalty that put the Aggies on the ASU 47, they managed to take it to the two yard line where Bean missed a 27-yard field goal.

What’s left of Sherman’season now?

He most certainly will absorb losses to Miami, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Colorado, and Kansas State.   The real contest will be with Baylor over who will be in the cellar of the Big 12 South.

Sherman’s main goal may be to keep these players’ confidence up.   A collapse in spirit may result in horrible blowouts every Aggie came to expect under failed coach Dennis Franchione.
