Football Mythbusters: Who's the Best RB?
Aug 13, 2008 | 10:25AM | report this
OK, this post was written based on my personal opinion from watching games, not based on stats.  In my opinion, stats can only tell tell so much.  I'd rather hear about an amazing play someone made or see a video clip of that play, I'd rather see that than just "so-and-so has a higher YPC average, so you're wrong."  Please feel free to share who your favorite players are at this position; I enjoy debate.  Also, my list of top QBs is here: http://community.foxsports.com/blogs/Football_Guru

Also, just so you guys know, this is only a list of the best RBs who are playing today.

MYTH:  (Insert a RB's name here) is the best running back in the league.

FACT:  In my opinion, these are some of the best.

1.       1. LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers) – As much as I absolutely despise the Chargers, LaDainian Tomlinson is simply the best in the league today, without a doubt.

2.       2. Adrian Peterson (Vikings) – If he plays throughout his career as well as he did last year in his rookie season, he’ll end up better than LaDainian Tomlinson in a year or two.

3.       3. Brian Westbrook (Eagles) – Amazing runner, and he catches the ball excellently.  He’s awesome.

Most overrated: Reggie Bush (Saints) – Gets praise, when he’s terrible.  Simply said, he’s fast, with no football skills and will not be any good for at least three more years.

Most underrated: Deuce McAllister(Saints) – The Saints went really far into the playoffs in Reggie Bush’s rookie year, and a lot of misguided people thought this meant Reggie Bush was the reason for the team doing so well.  However, the key to that was really Deuce.  Read this blog for more details. http://community.foxsports.com/blogs/Football_Gur

Honorable Mention:  Maurice Jones-Drew, Fred Taylor, Lawrence Maroney, Willie Parker, LenDale White, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Larry Johnson, Jamal Lewis, Chester Taylor, Stephen Jackson

Could Be On This List In a Few Years:  Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Rashard Mendenhall, Chris Johnson (Titans) , Marshawn ####, Mike Hart, Michael Turner

Guru,
I agree with your lists with a few exceptions on honorable mention. I don't think Brandon Jacobs is all that good. Sure he's big and strong but he looked better when Tiki was with the Giants. LeDale White has to show mwe a little more as well. Then there is Jamal Lewis who hasn't been quite the same since switching allegiance.

It's LT until he decides not to be anymore. Do think Willie Parker deserves a bit more then a honorable mention. Undrafted free agent, in 3 seasons of starting has 1200 yards+ each year.

Totally agree on Reggie Bush being the most overrated. He had a chance to be a feature back last year and did absolutley nothing. He works well when he has a power back to work off, but not when he has to carry the load by himself.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Darren McFadden on the honorable mention list immediately. Willie Parker and Fragile Fred Taylor could disappear just as quick.

I still am a firm believer that Reggie Bush is the next Marshall Faulk, but time will tell.

gambit, the reason I put in Jacobs was because the combined tandem of Jacobs-Bradshaw helped carry the Giants through the playoffs and into the Super Bowl.

And by the way, Lendale was looking fresh in the Titans' preseason games. He looked faster than I remember him being. On one drive, he was called on excessively to carry the ball because Jeff Fisher wanted to see if he could show a little more. With Chris Johnson's ridiculous speed to complement his ground-pounding, and with a QB who can run like Vince Young, the Titans' run game will be incredible, which will take some more pressure off of their mediocre-at-best receivers.
