The Detroit Tigers made a HUGE splash at the 2007 MLB Winter Meetings, by acquiring Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins, in exchange for six prospects including former first round picks, OF Cameron Maybin and LHP Andrew Miller. Also included in the deal were RP Eulogio de la Cruz, SP Burke Badenhop and Dallas Trahern, and C Mike Rabelo. Maybin and Miller were said to be untouchable, and you're starting to see that with other teams too, as the Yankees briefly discussed moving Phil Hughes if they could land Johan Santana. The Mets traded their top prize in Lastings Milledge to the Nationals. The Giants have discussed possibly trading Tim Lincecum, the Red Sox with Jon Lester or Jacoby Ellsbury. This is proving that some teams think now is the time to win, some teams would rather have low payroll and have a lineup of only young players.
Nice write-up. Now I understand that the Mets have approached the Tigers about trading Dontrelle. I personally would hate to see that. Willis should do great in Detroit. His lifetime ERA is 3.80 and if he can keep it at that level with a powerful Tiger run producing machine he should consistently be close to 20 wins each year.
Fedosky, good post. Succinct and to the point. The Tigers would be making a HUGE mistake if they trade Willis to the Mets. Willis will put the Tigers over the top. The Yankees don't have the prospects to deal for Johan Santana. That leaves either the Red Sox or Dodgers.
As a Dodgers fan, I'd be amenable to a trade for Santana. Here is what I would propose giving to the Twins: Clayton Kershaw, Andre Ethier, Juan Pierre, James McDonald, and Jonathan Meloan. The Twins would be getting two current major leaguers, and three of the top pitching prospects in MLB.
If this trade goes through, here is the Dodgers' starting rotation in 2008: Santana, Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley, and Jason Schmidt. I think Lowe and Schmidt will rebound from injury-plagued seasons and Billingsley will get better. Santana will benefit from playing in a pitcher-friendly park and have a 20-win season. Penny will be close to 20 wins. With Santana, the Dodgers win the NL West. Without him, the Dodgers finish third.

I had the (dis)Pleasure of watching Cam Maybin from my season tickets in Lakeland, Fla. Lazy fielder, and will no way ever take over Curtis Grandersons role. He like (two pitch) Miller that I also watched get blasted in lakeland are young prospects!
Maybe they will but (key word) maybe they wont amount to a hill of beans. Best of luck to them seriously. I just like the balls out attitude that we needed anther trick pitcher as well so why not take a chance..... Unlike the Angels who sleep on this deal!
I will miss Badenhop and Dallas Trahern who should open some eyes in the National League very soon!
But I cannot wait for My season Tickets in Lakeland, Fl . Spring Trainning will rock this year!
