Florida or Michigan?
Dec 02, 2006 | 6:55PM | report this
It's all over in Atlanta. Florida jumped out to a big early lead, then blew the lead, then played a spectacular fourth quarter to down Arkansas 38-28. The Gators win the SEC title and now wait on the polls to see if they will get a shot at Ohio State and a national title.

So who should go to Glendale -- Michigan or Florida? Certainly arguments can be made either way, but shouldn't you at least win your conference? OK, maybe not the Big East if Rutgers had gone unbeaten, but the SEC isn't the Big East. The SEC is better top to bottom than the Big Ten. The SEC has a conference title game. And Florida won it.

Even if Florida had lost that game, they would have still won the SEC. So by your thinking, they should still go over MICH.

Naw, UofM and OSU baby..

Two best teams in the Nation

Michigan should get the bid, they only lost by 3 at Ohio and they are the # 2 team in the country. I do still think we need a playoff system or just do away with the national championship altogher and go back to just the bowls.

If Florida would have lost, then ARKANSAS would have won the SEC, so that argument doesn't make sense. Michigan had their chance, they didn't win. Why should they get a 2nd chance when other more deserving 11-1 Champions haven't had a chance?

FLORIDA! Without a doubt! For a few reasons;
1) Michigan had their shot at Ohio.
2) Winning the SEC is nothing to sneeze at.
3) "Style points" are b.s., it comes down to Ws and Ls
4) Geographic diversity = greater interest than Midwest Bowl v.2

even though Florida should go to the championship game they won't go because the Sugar Bowl doesn't want LSU , they want Florida . Plain and simple , the city of New Orleans needs the revenue from out of town visitors which they would'nt get from the local LSU crowd . The influx of Fl. patrons and probably Notre Dame would bring in much needed cash . So you'll get a rematch of the Michigan -OSU game . Big deal !!!! Hopefully LSU will get a berth in the Rose with USC.

I thought the BCS was about matching up the #1 team vs #2, not whether you won your conference. When Michigan played Ohio St. one of the teams was going to lose. Just because you didn't win your conference doesn't mean that you aren't the #2 team in the country. All this bull #### is being thrown around now about winning your conference. Is the BCS about #1 vs #2 or not? If it isn't, then there needs to be a playoff system.

I don't like to see a OSU Michigan rematch just because it would prove nothing if Michigan beat us on a second try. However Michigan is the #2 team. This is why the BCS is flawed and a playoff needs to be put in place. Also, why does everyone say the SEC is so freakin Awesome? They are good but not great teams playing each other. Who's #1 and #2? Big TEN!!!!!!!!!!

You SEC people make me laugh. with Michigan got there chance and Lost. but if the role's were reserved you would all be staying the smae thing the Michigan fans are staying here.... hopefully this does make for a playoff system but it won't so we can all whine about what is fair and not fair.. i think Adam, you got it right man with down with the BCS... let it be decide in a collection of games sure.. you could still keep the bowl game like they do.. and they could rotate like they do take the top 8 teams and the top 7 bowls to decide it.. so you would have the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Outback and Captial One and and whatever other one could fit here and leave the Chapionship in Glendale... just a thought the Bowls would still make there money and the fans would still get what they wanted

Michigan was #2 and lost to OSU who was ranked #1
They are 11-1 losing only to OSU Florida lost to Auburn.
Michigan plays as tough schedule as well. Why shouldn't they get a second chance at it. Florida hasn't played anybody ranked hire than 4th.
If Michigan does play OSU again and wins what will happen then.

First of all the "Michigan would finish 5 or 6th in the SEC" may be the dumbest thing I have heard all year. Typical dumb fan talking out of their butt.

That being said I am a Michigan Fan and I admit, SEC is best conference, Florida played a better schedule, and does deserve to get in.

Unfortunately for you guys, Michigan is the 2nd best team, they will be #2 in the polls and they are getting in. They lost to the consensus #1 team, on their field, by only 3. If Florida deserved it so much then DON'T LOSE TO A SO-SO AUBURN TEAM. There is no argument for that. If you win them all, is the only argument you have.

OSU will house Florida if they get in, they are far and away the best team.

yeah florida won the SEC and Michigan is no.2 in the Big ten, problem is the two best teams in the nation are both in the big ten.. that was obvious in columbus.. the SEC is overrated.. people say SEC teams are great based on strength of schedule--and the fact that they have beaten other SEC teams--who are also overrated.

First of all, the "playoff" will never happen. Too many college presidents playing bureaucratic BS. There should never be such a thing as "style" points. Strength of schedule was never a problem in the past, either. As far as I concerned, go back to the bowls exclusively and dump the National Championship BCS mess. But, that won't happen, either. And by the way, bottom line, the reason this won't change is because of all of this disagreement on the blog!! Media loves it, fans love it, it's loved by all!! I guess if we just keep our mouths shut and stop watching the games, stop attending the games, our voices will be heard and they will be forced to reckon!! But until then, c'est la vie!!!

IT HAS BEEN CALLED MYTH OF A CHAMPION.

BUT AS FOR THE GAME DO YOU WANT TO SEE OHIO ST
PLAY A SECOND PLACE TEAM OR REAL CHAMPION OF THE

Read my post and you'll see I said Florida played a better schedule and the SEC is a tougher conference. Notre Dame does suck. I also said that Florida deserves to go. You blind SEC fans can't even see it when we admit you deserve it.

As far as so-so Auburn, I believe in using facts:
1)Got smoked by a bad Georgia Team
2)Almost Lost to a really bad Alabama Team
3)Beat a terrible Ole Miss by a whopping 6 pts.

Auburn is just not that good this year, but they are living on reputation, just like Notre Dame.

LSU is the 2nd best SEC team and probably kicks Florida's #### if given the chance again.

Over-Rated my !?@?$@#?! Clearly Arkansas' Quarterback C. #### had a "Leak" tonight!!!! Clearly I am a Florida Gator that is a WOMAN, who bet (in her mind only) 3 days ago that UCLA would beat USC! My Husband even thought I was "crazy" & that it couldn't happen! Well, it did & here we all sit! What is the use in having a "National Championship Game" if you send two teams there that have already played?!?!?!?!? I was AT THE AUBURN GAME when Florida lost....... NOT A SINGLE TOUCHDOWN WAS SCORED!!! Why???? Good Defense, I guess! Oh yeah! That'd be "style points" baby-o! If Michigan wanted sooooo badly to play for a Natl title, they should've won a few weeks ago! Aaaaawwwww!!!! Poor lil blue baby's! I DO think we still need a "playoff" system! There are too many unanswered games, questions, etc. that deserve to be addressed! I don't care what kind of fan you are, what good is "recent re-match" anyway? If OSU/Mich played in September/October that would be a little different! The SEC will always be a "TOP" Conference, but their NOT the only claim to fame in the game! Why have Conference Championship Games, a llllllllllloooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnng
ggggggg "down time" then BAMM a series of bowl games? Make the time to do it right! Maybe you guys should put a WOMAN IN CHARGE to make sure it's done CORRECTLY! Goodnight Silly Men!

Florida deserves a shot at the National Championship. I could go into detail saying just about everything everyone else has already explained, but the case is simple: Michigan is without a doubt, one of the best football teams in the country, but they have lost to Ohio State, and therefore do not deserve another chance. Along with a subpar schedule (excluding the obvious big games of Ohio State and Wisconsin) they lost to Ohio State. It does not matter where it is, a loss is a loss. A truly great team would win no matter where they play. Michigan is a good team, but not the team deserving to play.

Florida deserves to be in the National Title Game. They have toiled through the toughest schedule in College Football, and survived with one blemish to an otherwise good year. Florida lost to Auburn in Auburn because of a few bad calls, and an untimely meltdown by the offense. As with what I have said earlier, they are not a truly great team, but they are more deserving than Michigan. Schedule counts.

Oh, and as for the person that said Florida deserves to lose 1000 points for scheduling a division 2 opponent, why don't you let Michigan play as hard of a schedule as Florida did, and then see if its such a bad idea to have a breather. Ball State is not much better, and Michigan had breathers in every week except two.

Florida for the National Championship.

BigBlue, you keep harping on Florida's one weak opponent, but Ball State isn't exactly a powerhouse. Oklahoma played Middle Tennessee, and we'd be talking about them in the National title game if they hadn't gotten jobbed by the Pac-10 refs. Playing one weak team is typical and shouldn't be counted against anyone as long as they get a big win in that game.

OK,
I am a Floridian and Gator fan, BUT!
1) Gators, Quite whining about no rematch between Ohio State and Michigan. If it was not for rematches aka 1996 Florida and Florida State the Gators would not have a National Championship.
2) Florida and Michigan both play some weak teams.
3) The polls don't meen a thing until the final regular and conference championship games are played.
4) Florida should not skip Michigan if Michigan did not loose. Hmmmm then why did Louisville and USC skip Florida when Florida did not loose?

Here are the facts:
a. Conference Championship, edge to Florida
Florida 1
Michigan o
b. Conference play, edge to Florida
Florida 8-1
Michigan 7-1
c. Strength of schedule, edge to Florida

Michigan 3 in nation
d. Toughness of opponents, edge to Florida

f. Points allowed, edge to Florida

A modest proposal -- I'm watching Oklahoma/Nebraska, and if OU wins, let's put them in the big game against Ohio State. Let's ignore their "loss" to Oregon, leaving only a loss to Texas, if they win a Big-12 championship, and Adrien Peterson will be back. Discuss.

Any way, my hats off to that Florida team! I can't understand why the powers-that-be don't want a playoff. keep the stupid BCS, take the top 4 teams (sorry if you finish five you don't deserve it) and have two semifinal games in late december--call it "THE BCS TOURNAMENT" or something catchy and watch the cash roll in--ticket revenue, tv revenue and ratings for two HUGE extra games. Then keep two pre-selected BCS bowl games as the national championship and the 3rd place game which will continue to rotate as they do now. sounds like a win-win.

The SEC will get screwed, again. It's nothing new. Michigan and Florida have identical records. Florida played a tougher schedule (but not by much). Florida won their conference, but Michigan did not. The SEC is a tougher conference top to bottom (most people agree with this). Which team is the LOGICAL choice? It's sad that it won't be the logical choice, but then again...when has the BCS ever been logical? It is all a popularity contest....money talks.
