Math says Florida
Dec 02, 2006 | 7:55PM | report this
Our partners over at CollegeFootballNews.com have an interesting take on who should face Ohio State in the National Championship Game.

Here's the crux:

Who should play Ohio State for the national title? Michigan will most likely end up playing Ohio State in a rematch, but does it deserve it? According to the CFN Formula, which ranks teams based on what actually happened on the field and takes all subjectivity out of it, here are the rankings of four teams currently in the debate for the number two spot. This is NOT a ranking of which teams are the best or most talented. This is a formula to find out which teams had the best seasons based on who they played, who they beat, and who they lost to. We'll put out the entire 119-team ranking next week.

Out of Michigan, Florida, Louisville and Boise State ...

1. Florida CFN Score: 24.92
Record: 12-1, Quality Wins: 7, Elite Wins 3, Bad Loss 0, Bad Win 1, Elite Loss 1, Point Difference 2, Winning % 0.92

2. Louisville CFN Score: 21.60
Record: 11-1, Quality Wins: 6, Elite Wins 1, Bad Loss 0, Bad Win 1, Elite Loss 1, Point Difference 2.68, Winning % 0.92

3. Boise State CFN Score: 21.11
Record: 12-0, Quality Wins: 5, Elite Wins 1, Bad Loss 0, Bad Win 3, Elite Loss 0, Point Difference 2.86, Winning % 1.00

4. Michigan CFN Score: 20.54
Record: 11-1, Quality Wins: 4, Elite Wins 2.5, Bad Loss 0, Bad Win 0, Elite Loss 1, Point Difference 1.87, Winning % 0.92

The Formula's Components:
1. Wins. - If you win, everything else falls into place. Each win counts as 1.
2. Quality Wins - The number of wins over teams that finished with a winning record. Each win counts as 1.
3. Elite Wins - The number of wins over teams that finished with two losses or fewer. Each win counts as 1 with a road win over an Elite team getting an extra 0.5. Also counting as 1 is a road win over a team that finished with three losses or fewer (but the extra 0.5 isn't added).
4. Bad Loss - The number of losses to teams that finished with three wins or fewer or a loss to a DI-AA team. Each loss counts as minus-1. Take away an additional 0.5 for a Bad Loss at home.
5. Bad Win - The number of wins to teams that finished with three wins or fewer, or a win over a D-IAA team. Each win counts as minus 0.25.
6. Elite Loss - The number of losses to teams that finished with two losses or fewer. Each loss counts as 0.25.
7. Point Differential - Points for minus points against divided by 100.
8. Winning Percentage - To take losses into account, winning percentage is in the mix.

Florida or Michigan?
Dec 02, 2006 | 6:55PM | report this
It's all over in Atlanta. Florida jumped out to a big early lead, then blew the lead, then played a spectacular fourth quarter to down Arkansas 38-28. The Gators win the SEC title and now wait on the polls to see if they will get a shot at Ohio State and a national title.

So who should go to Glendale -- Michigan or Florida? Certainly arguments can be made either way, but shouldn't you at least win your conference? OK, maybe not the Big East if Rutgers had gone unbeaten, but the SEC isn't the Big East. The SEC is better top to bottom than the Big Ten. The SEC has a conference title game. And Florida won it.

Santa Claus isn't real
Dec 02, 2006 | 5:46PM | report this
We've been walking around a bit dazed for the past half hour. Kind of like when we were kids and we were told there wasn't a Santa Claus or an Easter Bunny. It's not bad, but it takes a little bit of time to understand that everything you've thought for the past few years is false.

Bravo to the Bruins. BCS chaos is good. The more the better. Maybe someday we'll get a playoff and ditch this crummy beauty contest we have now.

UCLA seemingly opened the door for Florida if the Gators could blow out the Hogs. Florida was on their way, up 17-0 at one point. The Razorbacks scored 21-unanswered points, but Florida just recovered a botched punt return for a TD and lead the Hogs 24-21.

That said, Florida needs to get on the stick and blow this game out to jump Michigan.

This might be a good time to stake out a table in any Ann Arbor pub. Party on Wolverines, you're second chance is coming. Try not to blow it again.

Trouble in Troy
Dec 02, 2006 | 4:45PM | report this
Wow. We never thought it possible. You can talk about a rivalry game and you can throw out the records, blah, blah, blah. But we never thought the Bruins could actually beat USC. Well. It's happening. The Trojans were driving for the winning TD when a John David Booty pass was deflected at the line and picked off by Eric McNeal. UCLA still leads 13-9.

Winds of change
Dec 02, 2006 | 4:21PM | report this
Another Bruins field goal has increased UCLA's lead to 13-9. USC looks lost on offense and have punted back to the Bruins. If you're a fan of Troy, this is not playing out very well.

In Atlanta, Florida is rolling now. After a blocked punt, Chris Leak ran for a TD and threw for another one to give the Gators a 17-0 lead. Florida looks really fired up and the Hogs look cooked.

This is the dream scenario for Florida fans. They need USC to lose and to blow Arkansas out. So far, so good.
Update: Casey #### hit Marcus Monk for a 48 yard TD to cut the score to 17-7 in the SEC title game. This is starting to seem like election day. We're waiting for the ballots to come all over the country.

What a Kick
Dec 02, 2006 | 3:52PM | report this
Field goals may be the theme of the day. That's all the ACC could manage, now a pair of field goals are playing a big role in the BCS race.

In the Rose Bowl, the Bruins have kicked a field goal to take a 10-9 lead over the arch rival Trojans. The Bruins desperately want to ruin USC's run at a national title.

Over in Atlanta, Florida leads Arkansas 3-0 in the second quarter after a Chris Hetland boot. Arkansas' potent offense has yet to get going against a the stout Gators defense.

Troy on Top
Dec 02, 2006 | 2:56PM | report this
After a slow start, the Trojans have finally taken the lead over UCLA 9-7 on a safety and a C.J. Gable TD run. With just a few seconds until halftime, this looks to be your score at the break.

USC looked tight at the beginning and the strength of UCLA, its pass-rush, seemed to really bother John David Booty. But the underneath passing game was effective in the TD drive.

Hold the Phone
Dec 02, 2006 | 2:15PM | report this
Maybe UCLA won't go quietly. It didn't seem possible that UCLA could compete with USC, but here we are late in the first quarter and the Bruins have taken a 7-0 lead.

Should we have seen this coming? USC has only been impressive over the past three weeks, all home games. Before that, the Trojans struggled against most of the Pac-10. Stay tuned, we could see chaos brewing.

Ball Game
Dec 02, 2006 | 1:45PM | report this
UCLA went three and out in its first series. We're willing to go ahead and declare this game over.

Meanwhile, in the ACC Wake Forest beat Georgia Tech 9-6 to advance to the Orange Bowl. Wake is a good story, but this game really showed what a disaster the ACC was this year. Not only is a team like Wake the champ instead of more traditional powers like FSU, Miami or Virginia Tech, but neither team could even manage a touchdown in the game. Nice work "super conference."

Championship Party
Dec 02, 2006 | 1:20PM | report this
It's kind of a sad day in college football. Today, the regular season comes to an end. But the season could go out with a #### if today's games can come through for us.

It shouldn't be a good game in Pasadena, but it's the most important in the big picture. USC takes on UCLA in the Rose Bowl. If the Trojans can beat their cross-town rivals for the 8th straight time, the Trojans will likely face Ohio State in the National Championship Game. If the Bruins can pull off the upset, it will either be Michigan or Florida instead.

Wolverines and Gators fans shouldn't get their hopes up. UCLA has proven all year that they can't win big games, can't beat good teams and can't become the elite program that UCLA should be. Karl Dorrell is usually overmatched in ever game, especially against Pete Carroll. This one could be a blow out.

In the SEC title game, Florida looks to keep it's slim national championship hopes alive as the Gators face the Razorbacks. The Gators have lived dangerously all year, but have come through with several close wins. The Hogs season was tarnished a bit last week with a loss to LSU, but Arkansas could very well end up in the BCS. Don't be surprised if Arkansas gets a big win here.

In the Big 12, Oklahoma and Nebraska duel in Kansas City. Oklahoma has done a great Texas imitation. It used to be the Horns that lost to OU in Dallas, then went unbeaten the rest of the way. This time, it's the Sooners, who face a resurgent Cornhuskers team. K.C. has been a tough place for Big 12 South teams to play. Keep that in mind.

And the Big East title has yet to be decided. Rutgers visits West Virginia later tonight. A Rutgers win will put the Scarlet Knights into the BCS. A win by the Mountaineers will propel Louisville to the BCS. Randomly, Texas also has a lot of interest in this game. There's a good chance a Rutgers win will put Texas into the Gator Bowl. If Rutgers loses, the Gator Bowl will opt for the Mountaineers and Texas will fall to the Alamo Bowl.

We'll be chiming in all day.

Troy Pie
Nov 25, 2006 | 8:44PM | report this
It's all over in Los Angeles. USC whipped Notre Dame 44-24. The score is closer than the game really was. There were only a few minutes in the entire game when Notre Dame looked like it was even with the Trojans, and most of those were before kickoff.

Now, it's likely Southern Cal will play for another national title. The Trojans will likely jump Michigan in the new BCS Standings that will be released tomorrow. All USC will have to do is beat UCLA. You read it here first, the Bruins have NO CHANCE. As a program, UCLA is light years behind USC.

In other news, after our third piece of pumkin pie, we're full and ready for bed.

Turkey Nachos or Irish Stew?
Nov 25, 2006 | 7:31PM | report this

Now this looks pretty good. Turkey Nachos:

1/2 lb leftover roast turkey meat, shredded
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 bell peppers (preferably red and orange), finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crumbled
1 (15- to 16-oz) can black beans, rinsed and drained
4 oz corn tortilla chips (not low-fat)
2 cups grated jalapeño Jack cheese (8 oz)
1/4 cup chopped scallion greens
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 cup sour cream
2 to 3 teaspoons finely chopped pickled jalapeño
Accompaniment: tomato salsa

Preheat oven to 450°F.
Toss turkey with lime juice and season with salt and pepper.

Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons oil in a 10-inch heavy skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking, then sauté bell peppers, stirring, until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a bowl. Heat remaining 1/2 tablespoon oil in skillet over moderate heat and cook garlic, cumin, and oregano, stirring, 1 minute. Stir in beans and cook, stirring, until heated through, about 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper.

Make 2 layers each of corn chips, sautéed peppers, beans, turkey, cheese, scallion, and cilantro in a 3-quart shallow baking dish. Bake nachos in middle of oven until cheese is melted, 6 to 10 minutes.

Stir together sour cream and jalapeño to taste and serve on the side along with salsa.

Makes 6 to 8 hors d’oeuvre servings.

Meanwhile, USC has added another TD and lead Notre Dame 28-10. Irish are knocking on the door, we'll update once we're done tossing our shredded turkey with lime juice and salt and pepper.
Update: The Irish converted two fourth down conversions on their way to a TD to cut the score to 28-17. We're moving on to all of this oil heating, but we might just warm up the turkey, melt some cheese and mash it on some chips.

4th Down Follies
Nov 25, 2006 | 6:38PM | report this
Notre Dame (and USC for that matter) keep going for it on 4th Down. The Irish have gone for it three times and have failed all three times. USC on the other hand scored a TD on 4th and one. Can mighty Notre Dame not recruit a kicker? If they'd kicked field goals, the score would be 21-16 right now at least. Instead, it's still 21-10.

Hold everything
Nov 25, 2006 | 6:29PM | report this
Wow, maybe this will be a game. Set up by a blocked punt, the Irish finally scored a TD on a Brady Quinn pass to Marcus Freeman to make the score 21-10. Now, after an interception, the Irish are driving again. We may have to nix our plan of something grand with the left over turkey. We'll just grab a leg until halftime to see how it all plays out.
