Profanity and our "censorship"
Jun 30, 2008 | 2:16PM | report this
We've seen several mentions of the strict "censorship" that we enforce in the FS community. Censorship is not what is taking place however, there is an automated profanity filter that is causing this perception.

There is a feature available in everyone's settings tab that allows you to turn on or off the filter for profanity. If you turn it 'OFF', then you will see every profane thing written within the community.

You can access the settings tab by going to your blog, then clicking on the settings tab (second from the right) . The  profanity filter toggle is located at the bottom of that page. Simply click on the 'Off' radio button and click the 'save settings' button and you will stop seeing the ####ing hash marks!

first off gr8 grammar in the first paragraph.

secondly when my account says "your account is currently gagged" would you consider that "censorship"?

or how about when my account says. "not able to retrieve your account information" what does that mean?

because both of these scenerios have happended to me here at foxsports.com. in fact i have had several accounts blocked and i don't even use profanity or offensive language or material.

is there any way to have my accounts opened back up once they have been "not censored" by the foxsports_admin?

please help me to understand the process.

Certainly Sizzel,

I can't speak for your past accounts being suspended but I think we can agree that there is a difference between profanity and abuse. This post was highlighting a feature that many members are likely not aware of. If you are not offended by profanity, you can shut the filter off. Easy.

As for your question on accounts, most of the suspensions that take place are for accounts that produce SPAM, impersonate other members, or continually abuse the community with 'hate speech'. Again, I can't say why your accounts were suspended but looking at your 'xrooster' blog it seems to contradict your 'i have had several accounts blocked and i don't even use profanity or offensive language or material' statement.

FOXBlog,

well i'll give you that much. i did use some rather profane and offensive language under the "xrooster" screenname. but hey, that's what the profanity filter is for right?

that was the point of the blog written above, and you mention it again in your comment/ "answer" to my question.

i have had several screennames "gagged" here at foxsports with out the use of profanity or offensive language, nor impersonation, nor SPAM.,*(i can either list, or link you to these screennames if you like)

why? did i break some other rule or term of use?

you insinuate in this blog that there is no censorship that takes place on the part of FOX. when in fact i have had numerous screennames "gagged".

i can list the screennames for you if you like.

oh, and if you wouldn't mind answering the second part of the question. i'm still not sure i understand the process.

can these screennames be "unlocked"?

if so, how? (other bloggers have had their blogs "locked" then reopened.)

if not i don't know what else to label the actions taken against my accounts.

but it sounds an awful lot like censorship.

We are not going to get into a debate on censorship here.

What I can tell you is we don't randomly choose accounts to suspend and honestly, the number of accounts that have been suspended isn't that large.

The fact that you have had several accounts suspended likely means you engaged in abusive behavior and your attempts at deception on this thread doesn't bode well for reversing the status on those accounts.

The best way to stay active is to refrain from abusive behavior. You have some interesting views on the NBA and we are glad you are part of the community. We would love for that to continue.

FOXBlog,

"attempts at deception"

nah, not me. my problem is that i don't know how to lie.

go ahead ask me anything?

you must be referring to the profanity thing.

i meant that i had several accounts "gagged" recently with out using profanity. i most definatly have used some serious foul language in the past.

but as far as abusive behavior goes. i'm not sure what you mean?

i haven't left a mark on anyone. all i do is type and hit the "post comment" button.

that's it.

why would you randomly suspend accounts?

that would be dumb.

hey i forgot to say thanks for the compliment.

so thanks for the compliment.

do you think you can put me in touch with "foxsports_admin"?

i assume you aren't the same person. the blogger "foxsports_admin" could probably help clear up my gaggings in the past and maybe help me get unlocked. i know the _admin knows gr8un54 quite well. they used to call me a troll and other stuff in an abusive way, that really hurt my feelings. and i was hoping to have them gagged so they could see how it feels.

oh and i want to apologize to any of those bloggers out there who feel that i was abusive to them. i thought that i was sarcastic, cynical, and condescending, but never abusive.

well i might be little hard on KOBE!! but he deserves it, he doesn't even blog here.

My main user name was gagged(?)
I was making fun of sites like "richmen.com". The posts would say something like richmen.com is talking about this issue on their website. I think I may have been confused with actually promoting these websites, while I was really making fun of them.

Either that or someone on this website endorses these posts and I made them mad by making fun of them.

All I know is I can no longer post with my other user name and I didn't get an email explanation or anything. I have been posting for years and playing fantasy football and never had any issues before. What can I do to get an explanation or gag removed?

Also, when I try to add this to my favorites, I get whoops page.

hello FOXBlog,

you have avoided answering the majority of my questions.

so you don't know who the foxsports_admin is? because i am pretty sure i know who it is.

and i think she is responsible for "gagging" numerous bloggers in the NBA section over the last six months.

please help me sort this out.

the blogosphere deserves to know the truth.

i despise deception same as you. that's why i want transparency in my NBA, and at foxsports.com. it's why i'm so vigilant against david stern. he is a liar. it's why i am so vigilant against KOBE!!, because he is a liar.

what do you think?

He was hit in the hand by a ball, tearing the nail off his finger and breaking the bone at the end of the finger....I just checked this news on ++kiss millionaires.com ++. It is a FREE dating site for celebrities, millionaire and their fans to seek love, fun and romance. Both celebrities and millioniares have a certified logo. I have checked it out. Really works for me

This isn't on topic, but I was wondering why some blogs don't appear in the "Recently Commented" or "Most Commented" sections even if they fit the criteria. I don't want to start any trouble, but a blogger I know and I have this happen to us, so I was just wondering if it was because you want to have variety and include new members or if there was some other reason? Thanks :)

I thought I was finally going to get an answer or my user name fixed. I complained about my user name getting gagged probably due to me making fun of websites with their dot com addresses. I finally got hope when I was asked my user name on July 10th. I gave answer of polocash on July 11th and it is now over a week later and still no answers. Please help or at least answer.

8:56 PM if you get someones address, you can go on zillow.com and get a satellite pic of their home. It's no big deal...real estate agents use it all the time. It's free. If you don't believe me, go to Zillow.com and type in your address. It will also give you an appraisal of your home. What he is saying is true...not that hard to find on the internet.

And no, it's not a federal crime to plagarize someone's blog unless it is copyrighted. It is also not a crime to spam blogs according to fox's terms of agreement...but the person can lose his right to blog.

I like bleeping profanity, but the words like "b@ng" and the "Fuhrer" should not be eliminated.

It is called history and English, two subjects that I usually excel at and encourage others to do as well.

When are you going to respond to some of these violent, racist, homophobic posters? I come on to talk football(soccer) and everyday have to leave the site because some immature person who can't deal with other peoples' opinions in an acceptable manner. Some of these posters try to get you to meet them personally and fight. In todays climate of Columbine type shootings is that a culture we want to encourage? One of these days it will happen on this site.
