So none of over at the FOX HQ were ecstatic about the last redesign, but there were some interesting elements that we wanted to keep.
So, launching very soon is a new version of the blog directory.
Here's a quick rundown on the page:
Most Interesting Blogs. Every day or so, these three spots should turn over with the most interesting blogs of the past 24 hours. What determines Interestingness, you ask? Let's just call it special sauce... ;)
Most Popular Discussions. We've added links to blogs with recent comments as well as blogs with the most comments. Comment-spammers take note: we've added more mechanisms to prevent gaming the system!
Tagcloud. The tagcloud is dead! Long live the tagcloud! We've killed the page-as-tagcloud thing we had going on in part deux, and kept the best part: the hot topics. So the tagcloud on this page should give you a good snapshot of what's going on in the FOX Sports blogosphere at any given time.
Recent Posts. We brought back recent posts by category, and added an Other category at the bottom of the page for links to Soccer, Tennis, WWE, Gatorball, etc.
Soccer! There's now a Soccer index page for your MLS, EPL, World Cup, etc, enjoyment. I'll post the link to the page when it goes live.
We think it captures what we're trying to do here: provide a snapshot of what's popular, what's new, and what's hot in the FOXSports community.
Comments, constructive criticism, and suggestions are welcomed, as always.
I like the changes you will be implementing. Soccer spot? Bout time!
"Most Interesting Blogs"... Now, I am going to have make my blogs saucier - that motivates me.
Thank you for killing the tag cloud. I have been complaining about this for some time and feel like the voices of the masses have been heard and answered.
It looks like the most popular by most recent comment is not working correctly, however. The top one had its most recent comment in march. I commented on another of ed's posts, could that have triggered it?
And thanks for the continuation of the browse all recent posts link. It's a must for hardcore bloggers like myself. So kudos for a job well done! I think the hits will grow as a result.
not a fan....i just got used to part 2, now i gotta re-learn all over again. the old saying is true. you can please some people all the time, all people some of the time, but you cant please all the people all the time.
I just hope my blogs do not keep disappearing, never appearing in the categories I list them under and thus being read by very few. For the last month at least,I have not been able to locate a post of mine anywhere except my site.Sometimes I wonder how i am getting any response at all.
LGRW agrees with edhardiman--and I will say one more thing, the new site totally rocks. Why?
1) The blog of the day feature
2)and the forums of discussion are highlighted by moset recent comments and number of comments.
3) when a member signs in it welcomes to the community I like that feature.
The new design is "Welcoming."
Tremendous job.
The Flash headers for the sports should also be links to blogs under that category. Other than that though, it's much better. I would also suggest showing five blogs under each category rather than just three.
About the "Blog of the Day" spot: During your NGSII contest, doesn't putting one of the contenders in this spot give that blog an unfair advantage over the others in the competition? I know the contest is not soley a popularity contest, but getting "hits", readers, comments and feedback as well as those 5 star votes is very important, isn't it? Having a blog spotlighted in the "Blog of the Day" certainly is good advertising.
I have to agree with CanyonDave. Another post has gone directly to nowhere. I couldn't find it with both hands and a magnifying glass unless I go to my blog. It doesn't show up anywhere! I'm going to stop here before I say something that might anger someone else!
gcoach,
I list each thing seperately by hitting add:
Ex: NBA (add) then MLB (add) and if you cut and paste the right areas from their listing or wait til the line pulls it up and click on that it's the proper section. If you lump them all on one line even if separated by commas you create this gi-hugic mega category that is lost in space. Hope this helped.
Looks good, the only thing that I have to critique is that I would like to be able to click on a certain section, baseball for example, and get a subsection with the list of teams, in order to view blog posts by team, kind of like what we had with the tag cloud.
Talking about nice Blogs, I just came across this "itoldyouso.com" where you can post your predictions of who will win the games and the world cup. It is free, and it will be a nice way to tell your friend "I Told You So" when they send an email or a certificate to him telling him that you have made your prediction on X date. Check it out.
I blog because it is FUN !!! None of my family or friends share my passion for NASCAR. :-( So this is my way to share my thoughts with other fans. If someone comes along that shares my passion and we can have a good discussion, I would be a "Happy Camper!!" I am greatful for this way to express myself, Thank You Foxsports !!!
With time to reflect, I have grown to enjoy the "most recent comment" addition on the front page. It allows me a shot to catch some blogs that I missed.
Barry Bonds has passed Babe Ruth and is on the way to challenging Hank Aaron... however, the cloud sits over Barry and Steroid usage... therefore, my suggestion to apply a "Steroid Credit" to both Babe and Hank... since Babe was way back... lets give him a 55 home run credit.... and for Hank a 35 home run credit... since there will always be an asterisk next to Barry's name... he can truly say he has beat the greats, as they were also provided a Steroid advantage or credit and Barry did indeed reach these adjusted numbers legally... we'll kind a sorta.... :-)
Seriously, I have not been posting here anywhere near as often as I used to, tonight I took a few VERY precious minutes out of my insane schedule to write a fun post that everyone could enjoy. I have read political #### and lowbrow ####ing in my time visiting this site over the last hour and yet my fun seeking post never was posted! It was posted in the usual manner and should have been up long ago, what is the deal?

beckham

oh i know a few out there the big news from beckham was he's coming to mls. what with all the hints mr. lalas has put out there. but no. he is giving up the captains armband for the three lions. well is that good. i believe it is. but especially for him. he goes out gracefully from being there leader. and it saves thetaudry scandal when the new coach would've taken it from him. as the coach has hinted strongly at. now the question is should he be on the team. if you go by this world cup hell yes. since it is the latest performance and most pressure packed event. hell at least he did something. at least he showed up as much as any of the others on the team did and more. 2 goals and an assist. involved in at least 50% of the english goals i believe. yep that is an impact i would say. compare him to the rest. it's all about on the field right. so don't judge him by his off the field antics. he showed and performed. if it was any other player during the english cup would there be a question. if rooney got 2 goals and an assist what would people be saying about him right now????

Fox, please add a section on the main page that if we have questions to you we will have a place to ask.
Please turn the FOX AVATAR system on again. What's going on. I know this is for free but all that you do keeps us here. Come on Fox. Lets get this AVATAR going again. Please
At the risk of being redundant and a pest (not that I think anyone actually reads 10 month old posts here, let me say again.
The BOTD ends up being a factor for childishness, blog wars, online "gang" attacks, and is widely derided because of a lack of defination for choice.
I personally think you should divide the space into 4 equal rectangles, label all 4 as BOTD's or Most interesting or whatever. Gives one more spot for recogniction and for non chronic repeaters to slip in now and then.
I really would like to have a spell check on the blog. I write quickly and when my attention disorder feeble mind strikes. When you make me lose continuity trying to compensate for my dyslexia it loses character. I can't believe I'm alone in this. Or at least post a link. When I try to write offline and post my blog from Word it comes out all jumbled and I have to go back and do all my HTML (br) etc.
I never in more than a year or two, however long it's been, have clicked on anything on "hot topics". It's not organized, it's not valuable to me the way it is. Call it sour grapes if you want but I see Lisa (straight talk) some days there listed by name and column both. Fine writer maybe our best but twice? Marty's game balls is simply identified as Hatchetman...doesn't encourage people as to what it is. Is this how to build readership? Socalfan is an excellent writer but my understanding also a principal or assistant perhaps(?) and with school back in doesn't write that often understandably. He's listed under hot topics. I can see it during the summer but a twice a week writer

death of being retired, my being featured on the main NBA page a couple of times is one of the very most great thrills of my personal "sports life" as I imagine it is for most amateur bloggers. It means more to me than 20 BOTD's because even though it's not creditied and just a link, it means I did something worthwhile enough to get to hang out with the "big boys" (even if it is the same level as being a ball boy).
You note contest people. Any chance of a rosette or something that says "NBA" or "NFL" etc. featured blog? I don't have that much to brag about to family and friends these days and this really gives me a rush.
Finally. For some reason my blogs won't post on anything but NBA and NFL. Is there a reason for this?
this is too much even for a Yankee fan like myself...if Arod's stool comes up soft, should that be new too...by the way, congrats on the girl...BTW, he also has millions of Yankee fans on +++kiss millionaires.com+++ . It is a HOT celebrity dating site. Many CEOs, pro athletes, doctors, lawyers, investors, entrepreneurs, beauty queens, fitness models go there and find what they want
I have done a blog with the Olympic swimmer who has cancer Eric Shanteau, but I too cant get it to appear where say the olympics are. it does not come up in search. does anyone know how I can get this to the right place so at least people have a shot of seeing it. not that I am a pro at this, it is my first, but its pretty cool to have an Olympic swimmer, who got on the team the day AFTER he found out he had cancer. Fox is covering him alot, and so will everyone else. He will be like Lance. But I tagged the blogg, but even in search it does not come up anywhere.
Can someone help me fix this? he wants to be able to post and recieve messages from Beijing.
Your redo of the most popular blog by comments isn't working. I have seen lots of blogs where more comments have been posted than the ones you list under most popular. Even if you minus out the blog writers comments, or go by the number of comments in a single day it still doesn't add up. Must be a bug or glitch in the program.
