Letter to the Sleeping Sailors (The Mariners)
May 08, 2008 | 9:16PM | report this

Dear Hibernating Mariners,

Please wake up. It is May and while it is still early I can see you desperately aren't up to the challenge. You get me excited every year because of the expected potential and it seems every year you seem to disappoint. I'm not asking for 2001...I'm not asking for Gar to hit a double or for Griffey to round third (ok, maybe I want the second one).

All I'm asking for is some competitive baseball. Your errors are through the roof your bats are as cold as ice and for once since 2001 the pitching is there, what a waste. You took my young stud away (A. Jones) and I forgave you. I watched intently opening day as our new guy pitched a galant no-decision and thought my M's are back. I looked at Ichiro, Beltre, and Lopez and said that is the most solid 1-2-3 we could possibly ever have...ever. Our defense once again was pre-empted as the best in the league and you became the sexy pick for the west, the pennant, the title...you got me excited.

Where are you now? The bottom of the West? You are better than that. Always have been, you made me proud last year with your improbable run that fell short. You told the world you were more than an All-World Outfielder.

What will it take for you to wake up and play like it's 1995? Can we bring the Kid back and he can lead us to the promised land once again? Please oh please, take away the pain of seeing our Sonics stripped from our grips and give us hope that sports in Seattle aren't dying. The Hawks, our last vestige, can't hold the load forever.

With all our love,

Your adoring and die-hard fans
