With over half of the 2008 MLB season in the books I thought it was appropriate to figure out which teams have the easiest time of it as they proceed through the next couple of months trying to make the playoffs…
I took the current MLB Power Rankings and then tied that to each team’s remaining schedule of games to come up with a Strength of Schedule (SOS) ranking similar to what is used in football.
Here was the situation through the games played on the Fourth of July…
Power National League Record Remains
Rank East W – L H – A
6 Philadelphia Phillies 48-39 40-35
18 Florida Marlins 44-42 35-41
17 New York Mets 42-44 37-39
21 Atlanta Braves 41-46 32-43
28 Washington Nationals 34-54 37-37
18.0 Division Rank-5 209-225
Rank Central W – L H – A
8 Chicago Cubs 52-35 41.34
9 St. Louis Cardinals 49-39 36-38
11 Milwaukee Brewers 47-39 39-37
24 Pittsburgh Pirates 40-45 37-40
25 Cincinnati Reds 41-47 38-36
23 Houston Astros 40-47 45-30
15.3 Division Rank-4 217-217
Rank West W – L H – A
19 Arizona Diamondbacks 43-44 37-38
15 Los Angeles Dodgers 42-44 39-37
20 San Francisco Giants 38-49 42-33
29 Colorado Rockies 36-51 37-38
30 San Diego Padres 34-53 37-38
22.6 Division Rank-6 193-241
Now for a look at each team’s SOS… These were determined by using the opponent’s Power Rank and multiplying by the number of games played against each opponent, with one variation. One point in the rankings was subtracted from the home team’s Power Rank to weight the results in favor of the home team, just as in reality the home team has a certain advantage. Hopefully this will yield more realistic results to these findings. Finally the results were then tallied and divided by the number of remaining games to be played…
Here is the Strength of Schedule determined by this method: (the easiest schedules are listed first)
Power Current
Rank Team SOS Rank Standing Games Out
29 Colorado Rockies 20.89 1 4th-West 7
20 San Francisco Giants 20.80 2 3rd-West 5
15 Los Angeles Dodgers 20.11 3 2nd-West 1
19 Arizona Diamondbacks 19.88 4 1st-West -
11 Milwaukee Brewers 19.47 5 3rd-Cent. 4
30 San Diego Padres 18.57 6 5th-West 9
23 Houston Astros 18.43 7 6th-Cent. 12
17 New York Mets 18.34 8 3rd-East 5
6 Philadelphia Phillies 18.16 9 1st-East -
24 Pittsburgh Pirates 17.57 10 4th-Cent. 10
25 Cincinnati Reds 17.55 11 5th-Cent. 11
8 Chicago Cubs 17.36 12 1st-Cent. -
28 Washington Nationals 17.14 13 5th-East 15
21 Atlanta Braves 17.05 14 4th-East 7
9 St. Louis Cardinals 17.03 15 2nd-Cent. 3
18 Florida Marlins 16.39 16 2nd-East 4
Here is how it appears, and always with the injury disclaimer,
In the East, the Philadelphia Phillies have withstood the Florida Marlins attempts to retake the lead they once enjoyed. It appears if the Mets can right their ship (get consistent pitching) they might challenge for the East, but this may be too tall an order. The Mets and Phillies’ schedule match up so there’s no advantage there. The Marlins have the toughest schedule of all the National League teams and for this reason I believe they will fade as the season progresses. The second place team in the East will be left out in the October cold... The Phillies are too strong to be overhauled here.
The Central division is the strongest of the in the National League’s divisional Power Rankings, coming in fourth overall. Like the AL Central, this division is adding up to be another shootout. The Cubs have led this division while accumulating what was the best record in baseball most of the way, but the Cardinals and Brewers have hung with them. Now Milwaukee has added a top arm for the stretch run with a couple more weeks to go before the trade deadline. Will the Cubs and Cards act to improve their chances? This will be hotly contested regardless of whether any new additions are made to these teams. The Wild Card team in this league will come from the Central… I’m going to play it conservatively here and pick the Cubs to win the division and follow through with the Brewers sliding into the playoffs as the Wild Card team…
The West division is bar none, the weakest division in Major League Baseball this year. If any one of these teams gets hot and can sustain it for a month or so, they might walk off winning this division title, and that’s what it’s going to take to make the playoffs. Being a Giant fan it really grinds on me to say this, but the way it stands right now, the Dodgers should be the team that “gets ‘er done” here. They’ve hung around while the Diamondbacks slowly have fallen back to the pack after an impressive start out of the gate. The Bums have had what seemed like their whole team on the DL at one time or another, but now they appear to be getting healthy. If these guys can keep away from any future injuries, this division race will be over. I can’t see any trades before the deadline being made as these teams, other than the Dodgers, are becoming more fiscally responsible…
So here is how I see the playoffs developing as the second season begins…
Division Winners –
American National
East – Tampa Bay Rays Philadelphia Phillies
Central – Minnesota Twins Chicago Cubs
West – Los Angeles Angels Los Angeles Dodgers
Wild Card Teams –
Chicago White Sox Milwaukee Brewers
There ya have it! Now we’ll sit back and see if I get picked off base or get a good jump and come in safe!
Is this a joke? Come on man. Each league gets only ONE wild card team. How would the playoffs work with five teams?? Have you ever seen a team in the MLB playoffs have a bye? You should know this stuff.
I'm a big advocate of good pitching. The Dbacks just can't seem to play the good team ball behind their pitchers. Their defense has faltered and ru production is down. These things are curable but I'm afraid the Dodgers are getting healthy at the right time and will be a force to reckon with...
Like I stated above, if any one of these NL West teams get hot and sustain it for a good month, they could take this division. I'm just afraid it will be the Dodgers...
I find only two things wrong with this post, aside from you sneekin an extra wild card in LOL. The DiamondBacks fell like a rock just like there ace Bandon Webb, nothing slow about it. Secondly, you told me yesterday the top 4 teams are in the American league, but today you say the Cubs have the best record in base ball most of the way. Splain? And the METS are beating Philly 10-2 and if it holds up they will be back over 500 and just 2.5 back of the Phils. I know you like the guaratees so here it is. Not only will the Tigers make the Playoffs, but the METS will win the NL EAST, by at least 3 games
No big deal, it's just that judging from the rest of your article, you appeared to know a good amount about baseball, so it was kind of odd that you confused baseball's WC rules with football's. ANyhow, nice blog.
I don't think the Dodgers will take first. I believe the D-backs will still win it, with the rocks rallying for a wild card.
The Dodgers will finish third with the upstart Giants right on their tails. With all due respect to my friend Bolt Backer, I think SanDiego keeps the cellar company.
After a wierd first half I really think the Rox will turn it around for a playoff spot. I just don't see an offense with Holliday,Hawpe,Atkins,Barmes,Spillb orghs,Tulo(When he comes back) Baker, and speedsters Taveras and Posednik, underachieving much longer.

Being an ardent Marlins' fan I commend you ion giving 'em some props. Though I'm off the belief that they can right the ship if their pitching is more consistent.
The pennant winners for the NL will in likelihood come from the Central. I don't feel that NL West is all that competitive and if anything the brand of baseball in the division is amongst the most putrid being played across the game as a whole.
The feelgood story is the Rays in the AL. And once again one can admire their drive and determination. They're showing us all how competitive that they've now become.
As to who'll make it out of the AL it's not too close to call. But it'd take a wiseman to bet against any of the perennial contenders save but a few.
Those aren't my Power Rankings, they are from a certain 4 letter network... I'm just using what they came up with. In their rendition and probably based on the quality of competition, the Cubs are ranked #8...
Looks like homerism is alive and well in New Jersey! lol
If the Diamondbacks add some offensive punch, I can't see it. They will have a lot of one run games and come out on the short side. I like strong pitching, that's about 2/3rds of the battle, but you still have to put runs up on the board...
Can the Rockies turn it on and make a run back into contention? They've got the easiest schedule in the second half of 2008, but the Dodgers are right there too... This will be interesting...
I've gotta believe the Dodgers, getting their horses back at the right time, and with Joe Torre pulling the levers, will end up in first. The Wild Card will not come from the West IMO...
I'm not saying the Marlins can't do it, seems they are always doing the "impossible", but with a tough schedule in front of them, they certainly have their work cut out for them... I'd really like to see these guys pull ahead and stay there...
The Rays look like the real deal and like they say, pitching and defense don't go into swoons like hitting does. With this in mind, I've got the Rays going places for the first time in their history...

It'll be great either way just to see how both Florida teams do. Both have brought a sense of urgency to the way that they play the game. Hoever it's the overall supportI for one feel is terribly lacking . As avid a fan that I am for the Marlins. It pains to see that the venue is rarely ever filled to capacity . One would've thought that a wake is taking place for the dearly departed .
I don't know that over the course time things'll ever change if either team is in receipt of a new venue.

Generally, I have little to disagree with, and it could be like this. I would expect a Marlin fade away and it isn't unlikely the Cubs can be caught by the Brewers. While the Mets would have to beat Philly outright to get into the playoffs, it may well yet come to pass that, with the return of Church and Alos and some demonstration of consistent pitching, the Mets could yet catch the Phils. While they BOTH have relatively easy schedules the Mets seem to be stirring a "wee bit" whereas the Phils, despite great comeback efforts, still lost 3 of 4 to the Mets, so there is a su####ion that could continue. I wouldn't declare the Mets dead quite yet, given the talent that lies, latent, beneath all the problems so far encountered.
No NL team is really up to playing the AL teams but we will see, we will see!
I didn't comment on this yesterday when I read it because of the wild card thing and my natural instinct to avoid controversy and confrontation unless a greater purpose would be served.
That being said, do you really think that the Red Sox will dip enough to miss out on the wild card?
I could like the Cardinals for the playoffs but they didn't gain enough ground in the first half to pad the record for the heavy duty schedule they have in the second half.
My trusty old computer (4 year old HP Laptop) has suddenly begun doing backflips on me... Thinks it's time to invest in a new one... Sorry about the Wild Card thing, bosox... I'd like to blame that on the computer too! Anyway... It's either going to be the Red Sox or the White Sox. If the Yankees and Red Sox keep beating each other up in those extra inning death matches, then I'd say the pale hose are in!
Locksey, the Mets get seem so embroiled in controversy over the ex-manager's firing and all, I just can't see them getting it back together...
Al, The new downtown stadium in Miami appears to be a go... The Miami Marlins should show much better with that 35,000 seat or so venue. Now if the Rays can get a similar deal done somewhere around the Bay area... You know, they could tear down Legends Field and build a new one there while escorting the Yankees out of town! lol
Thanks guys and I hope I'm not off the air for too long with these computer problems...
