Any sports fan in the good old USA knows that one of the biggest radio and television sponsors over the years has been the nation’s beer breweries. With the current state of blogging technology, it’s become possible to really stir up the memories. Here are some old-time breweries and their television ads. Do you remember when?
Rheingold Beer (In honor of the New York Giants making the SB!)
Carling's Black Label Beer
Falstaff Beer
Lucky Lager
Being a flyfisherman, I really enjoy watching this one...
Old Milwaukee
Then there's some of my favorite recent commercials...
Budweiser Beer
Coors Light
How about the Milwaukee's Best "Men Should Act Like Men" Commercials?
Finally, Sam Adams (In honor of the New England Patriots in the SB!)
There are many more out there. What's your favorite?
Thanks to kellyscott. Your blog on Super Bowl food inspired this!
Ever hear of Buckhorn? How about Brew 102 from L.A.?
I always think of Rainier and Oly when I think of the northwest and then there's Henry Weinhardt's...
I had a heavy dark beer one time from a micro brewery in Yakima Washington that I absolutely could not get down... It was the consistency of syrup and called the "Czar's Own" and let me tell you, the Czar could have it!
Have you ever heard of Hudepohl's beer from Cincinnati or Shinglings.
How about Little Kings Cream Ale.
Of course you knew this was coming, but when I did drink, I liked German beer while I lived there. Not St. Pauli Girl, but Binding Bier, Ayinger Bier and "Budvar", and precursor to Budweiser in Czechoslavakia.
They don't male this anymore. It was a small bottle, a favorite of High Schoolers in Ohio.In the 70's that is. This commercial really sucks. They had better ones.
Dwindy - Beer and sports have gone together for as long as I can remember. I am having a beer right now, in the middle of the night, just from thinking about sports. LOL At almost 60 years old, I can truly relate to your post, thanks. In KC area, Country Club Ale, Goetz, and Heidelbreau were some of the locals.
Was in Shea Stadium in NY in 1969 to see a Mets game (year of miracle Mets) anyway thats how I know about Rheingold Beer. There was a big sign by the scoreboard in centerfield and my buddy Claude and I couldn't get over the words "Its the head that counts!"
There is an International grocery store in Washington D.C. where the various embassy staffs can shop for usual foods. If you're ever in D.C. check it out. You can buy beers from all over the world!
You just named some more brands that I've never heard of. Every area has their own unique breweries.
We're about the same age. I can remember my Dad taking me with him on summer Sunday afternoons to pitch horseshoes with his buddies. Everyone would bring their kids and we'd run and play while the games proceeded. Our dads brought beer in iced buckets and as they took their turns pitching shoes they'd set their beers down and we'd sneak in and grab a swig, then run like hell. It was great fun and our dads didn't mind too much...
I'm never sure if you're joking or not... I'll look for it.
I grew up drinking Coors Banquet beer before it went nationwide. I'd work at a citrus packinghouse loading refrigerated trucks in the summer with package boxes of valencia oranges. Many times when we'd open the van for loading we'd find several cases of Coors that the trucker was taking east for his buddies to enjoy. You can bet those truckers kept a close eye on the guys loading his truck with that temptation in the mix!
I was raised inna small town (apologies to JCM) in Central Texas , a German/Wendish community where 3 year old kids could be seen at wedding receptions drinkin' keg beer out of a styrofoam container...Drinkin' beer was part of the culture.
In High School, there was always some cat that would drive up to Dallas and bring back cases of Coors and we'd all treat it like it was an EVENT.
The fact that it was hard to get convinced us that Coors had to be the Lamborghini of beer. After distributerships found their way south we got over it and went back to drinkin' Lone Star, Pearl, Budweiser, and Shiner.
Ol' "Stinky" Stueber never did drink Coors..He was a dyed-in-the-wool Falstaff kinda guy...
..Ol' "Stinky"..Last I heard 'bout him..he was doin' time at Huntsville State Prison fer runnin' a Ponzi Scheme outta the "Golden Years" retirement home community...
Dwindy1" i would never joke about beer no its accually set in bourbon barrels after its brewed to get some of the bourbon flavor and they only make it in the winter months its really good it has a picture of a snowman on it im sure if you look hard enough youll find some

Aaaaah - the old days!!! Old Style, Stroh's, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Lowenbraugh, Grain Belt, Augsberger, Point Bock, Hamm's, Busch, Schiltz Malt Liquor, Lone Star, Miller High Life Pony Pack's, Miller Ice, Bud Ice, Black Label, Rhinelander, Milwaukee's Best, Red, White and Blue, Moosehead, Rolling Rock, Leinenkugel, Colt Malt Liquor and Mickey's Big Mouth.
You had me at hello....
Ahh yes. There are some great small breweries around these days. And then there is Yuengling; got hooked on that stuff while spending the winter at Fort Bragg a couple of years ago. Great stuff which is, alas, distributed nowhere near my home state. So I either pick up several cases when I get out East or... buy a case by mail order. It's that good.
Yeah, my priorities leave a lot to be desired... You're from the Keystone State aren't you??? There should be some fine breweries in that neck of the woods...
moseby... You named several brewskis there that are news to me! Then there's the Mexican beers, Corona (a fine brew), Tecate', Dos Equis, Pacifico, Bohemia, and Carta Blanca to name a few...
Thanks for the visit and the input on one of our favorite topics!
I think that I shall never hear
A poem lovelier than beer.
The brew that Joe's Bar has on tap
With golden base and snowy cap.
The foamy stuff I drink all day
Until my memory fades away.
Poems are made by fools I fear,
But only (insert name of your beer) can make a beer.
Okay, I learned this in college about 100 years ago. And people say the U of TN doesn't teach us anything. lol Does anyone remember Billy Beer? It was named after Jimmy Carter's brother. Do any of you remember Pres. Carter?
Narragansett beer from Cranston, RI sponsered the Red Sox for years. Curt Gowdy used to say those words at every game.
Back in the early '70s, I was living near Albany, New York. On weekends, I usually drove back to Boston to be with an old girlfriend. My friends in New York would always want me to bring cases of 'Gansett back with me and my friends in Boston would always want me to bring cases of Utica Club to them. My trunk was never empty and both beers were swill.
I love an occasional beer, and some of the ones mentioned here I haven't heard of and others I've forgotten. I'm a little like Marty, partial to the true German brews thanks to a friend of mine who spent a lot of time there in the military. As far as domestics, I'm kinda partial to Bud Select now.
Another one that I haven't heard of ina long time is Wiedemann. Not even sure if it's made any more or not.
Hey VolFan,
I'm 36, but I remember when Billy Beer was around and I even remember President Carter!
It's something how everyone always seems to think the other person has it better. A friend and I were fresh out of HS and traveled to Wash. D.C. and then up to NY in 1969. When in D.C. we caught a cab and for some reason happened to ask the driver what the drinking age was and we about lost it when he told us it was 18. We were from Calif. where it was 21. We told him to pull over at the next bar. Our first legal beer never tasted so good! We went on up to NY then and hit every bar in sight. Then someone told us it was 21 in NY... Just a question of attitude, never got ID'd!!!
Thanks Bosox!

I was always partial to the 16 ouncers! Then there were the quarts... It was always the best to have a 6 pack iced down and ready on a hot afternoon after a hard day's work. It tasted great!
Closest I've been to Germany must have been at the International Village at Epcot Center in the Germany Pavilion. I've sat in their Beer Garten and imagined I was in Munich while sipping on an authentic Bavaria beer! You're from Kentucky aren't you? I'll bet there are a few nice breweries around Frankfurt... Sounds good anyway!
I'm a sports fanatic living on the west coast of Florida. I'm a rare bird that moved here from the left coast a couple of years ago. I advocate an even playing field in all of life's endeavors.
