Sixty-Nine Points?
May 17, 2008 | 3:33AM | report this
Note-First things first.  I was WRONG about Lebron James (at least for one night).  The big guy turned it on and turned it up.  Last night the whole package (scoring, rebounds, assists, defense) was there for all 48 minutes.

Last night the Boston Celtics looked like the basketball equivalent of one of Charlie Brown's little league teams.  Just put Doc Rivers in one of those sweaters with the zig-zag patterns.

Boston 69 Cleveland 74.

How does a team hyped as a title contender end up scoring just 69 points?

Let me count the ways:

Let 36 of your 69 shots come from two players (Garnett 21, Pierce 15).

Get only 13 chances at the free throw line.

Four shots each from two starters (Rondo and Perkins).

Do what most good NBA teams can't (hold Ray Allen to 8 shots and 9 points).

Get just 12 points and 16 shots from the bench (most of which seemed to come from Glenn Davis missing after offensive rebounds).

Accumulate just 19 assists in 48 minutes.

Put up just 37 rebounds, with no player in double figures.

Shoot 39.7% from the floor.

Home court-road game talk aside, this was just bad basketball.  I've seen Garnett within the context of the Timberwolves generating offense and lifting everyone else up with him.  Last night was different.  Last night it was Garnett and the Invisible Men.

No ball movement.  Nobody hitting the open shot.  Very little open floor basketball.  Just alot of standing around waiting for Garnett to do the work.

The NBA game continues to drift in the direction of low scoring.  Possibly salaries play a part.  You pay mega salaries to star players and they expect, and so does management, the offense will run through them.  The fashionable thing to do is bring in "complimentary players" who know their job is to do one thing well (defense, rebounding, passing).

What you end up with is nobody who can hit a shot after your third option (or, in Cleveland's case maybe not even a second option).  Each possession uses most of the shot clock, giving defenses time to adjust.  And the running game never gets going.

Watching the Celtics offense last night was like watching paint dry.  They played defensive offense and never attacked, never took a chance at a shot early in the clock.  Tired old men playing a tired old game.

Will Boston beat Cleveland at home in Game 7?  Don't know.  Lebron James could make me eat my words (again).

I do know this.  I've seen alot of NBA title teams over the years.

This season's Celtics won't be one of them.

Underage-I hope you're right. But I don't think D is what's causing them not to shoot straight.

dudski, nice analysis, and way to be accountable.

what is it do you suppose that's making the celtics shoot crooked?

remember the other day when i told you that the cavs held all 3 of their eastern conference playoff opponents to around 10 ppg game below their regular season average in last years playoffs?

this years playoffs?

the cavs held the wizards 6 points fewer than their regular season ppg.

this regular season the celtics avereged 100.54ppg.

this series against the cavs? 81.8ppg

how does this happen?

Sizzle-You make good points in favor of the Cavs defense. I think it's also that they play a slower pace to eat clock and rebound well enough to keep the other team from running.

The problem with Boston is Boston. The have to be more active on offense and hit open shots. Where did Ray Allen go?

I have such a hard time with you Lebron cultists as I had with the early Kobe Cultists.

Back when people said Kobe was all stat line and no leadership they were correct. The only difference in Kobe then and Lebron now is that Lebron doesn't blow up in public like Kobe has done.

But you call that a complete game? Lebron routinely travels on his "drives to the basket". Almost never called. Lebron routinely charges on his "drives to the basket'. SELDOM called. Almost always called the other way putting him on the line when he should be fouling out around the 3 quarter mark of most games.

Lebron's so called new found defensive skills amount to the refs allowing him to maul everyone. Why is it that KB24 can be an all pro defender year after year and every game he has fouls that nobody can see, but Lebron gets NO votes for 2nd team all pro defender and he mauls people and never gets called for it?

He dribble the ball 18-20 seconds of the clock almost every time and his assists are what are called excuse me exists meaning he's going to get some just like Bryant did when he was ball hogging the clock away and they don't really mean much.

For you people worshipping at the feet of Lebron I would say this. if the Celtics had of swept the Hawks and then had problems with Lebron like this then you have a point. But they didn't. The Celtics have done exactly with the Cavs that they did with the Hawks only the Hawks had no Lebron for the refs to bow down to and protect. Lebron is the kobe of two years ago. Without the defense and the outside shot and the circus basket.

Come to think of it, Lebron is a poser.

You know better than that Sizzle and it only shows your immaturity to continue calling me Dusty whom I've only seen once and have heard about from you and one other who is just as immature as you. You only call me a man because I won't play kissy face with you. Grow up.

An excuse me assist is one when you're doubled or tripled and you've dribbled the clock out and just can't get a look at the rim so finally you dump the ball off to someone standing all alone for the last 2 seconds. Excuse me, look what I found.

The Cavs are playing great d right now they are doubling the ball and are not allowing Pierce or Allen to come off screens for open looks. Also the Cavs bigs are killing them on the boards and defensivly

The Celtics will wind up defeating the Cavs in Game 7 at home but I'll tell you what...

There is no way they get past the mighty Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons absolutely know how to win away from home.

Pistons in the Finals against L.A in a rematch of 2004. That's guaranSHEED.

Good call. I am afraid that they are missing one more mean big man. Is PJ Brown hurt?

How about Robert Parrish? BillWalton? Greg Kite?

Good writes.

sigh....my team stunk...they have since the playoffs started. I don't get it. They can't stumble and bumble their way through the play-offs. I am bummed. Just when I thought I had reason to look forward to NBA season, it looks like I was misguided. If I have to wait another few decades.......sigh.

Recently, quite a few celebrities and pro athletes were said to appear on the millionaire luxury club RichMatchMaking.comOMG!!! Are these famous guys fond of internet dating for now?? Maybe they are indeed so rich that they feel boring sometimes to need new things?
