I used to think sports journalists knew something. They sounded like they did. Very confident lot. Use words like establish. "Well, Mike, the Patriots will establish the running game early and try and neutralize the Cowboy pass rush. If Dallas doesn't put some pressure on Tom Brady it could be a long afternoon for Dallas."
What are they saying? And is it anything someone with an intuitive grasp of the obvious didn't already know? Safe talk nobody will remember after the game.
When was the last time you heard an announcer say, "New England will probably go up top early and often against the inconsistent Dallas secondary. The vaunted Wade Phillips 3-4 hasn't generated a consistent pass rush all year and they won't start Sunday." You won't, but it's true.
The Cowboy defense has just 12 sacks in five games, and Brady has only been sacked three times. Do the math. Unless Dallas goes blitz happy (a risky proposition against the Patriots) he will have time to put up 250 yards, at least two touchdowns, and no more than one interception. And the golden QB will go deep more often than you'd expect, mainly because for some odd reason (over rated receivers?) the Patriots aren't that good on third down.
There may be some talk about Dallas needing to keep the New England offense off the field. That would be nice, but if you're looking for the Cowboys to do it by running 50% of the time it's not going to happen. Thirty-six passes minimum, as many as fifty if they trail early.
The pattern all season has been for Dallas is to pass first, then run. If the Cowboys get seventy-five yards running that could be enough to win. So could fifty. But if it ends up being 35 yards (and it might), that's another story. One reason it could be a low total is that Julius Jones is not effective running anything other than a delay. (Not that the announcers will say that).
The Patriots are an organization headed by a coach with questionable ethics. Dallas is a team living large off an inspired quarterback who can sustain drives by moving in the pocket. They have no effective backup. Will the Patriot front seven try to injure Romo? Only if the game ends up being played on a day of the week ending in "y". Nobody will say that on the air, even if a Patriot lineman runs onto the field with with a tire iron in one hand and kneecaps Romo.
Who is the key player in the game? The papers say the quarterbacks. Some say Terrell Owens and Randy Moss. I say Mat McBriar, the Cowboy punter. He is the best in the league since Ray Guy and gives Dallas a field position edge which will force New England to gain more yards and use more time to score. Count the yards behind where each drive starts. The team that loses the field position battle (likely New England) will lose.
You are going to hear about Romo's interceptions against Buffalo, and about his dad's prostate surgery. Neither are going to have anything to do with the outcome. Consider this. They have a name for NFL quarterbacks who haven't figured out how to focus on the game they are in. It's road kill. Once the game starts quarterbacks are who they are, for better and worse. That means two interceptions for Romo and three touchdown passes.
New England has a good running game. Morris and Maroney both average nearly five yards a carry. That, and not Brady, represents the nightmare scenario for Dallas. If the game turns into "Running Backs Gone Wild" you can put out the fire and call in the dogs. Dallas will be toast.
All that said, games like this are heavy weight matches. They start slow (the coaches hope) as the teams seek an advantage. Odds are the first team to land a hard blow, whether it's a turnover or a sustained drive, will win.
Common sense tells you New England wins this one 28-23. But Tony Romo seems blissfully ignorant of conventional wisdom and the game is being played in Dallas. Let's give this one to Dallas, 30-28.
First of all, your title is great, a real attention getter.
Second, you are spot on about the useless drivel that oozes from the pie holes of stuffed neckties in press boxes.
Third, I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of the game itself. The Patriots are just too strong (illegal tactics or not) and the Cowboys will get their first L this weekend, although I won't venture a guess on the score.
Great post Dudski. Always a pleasure. I hope your prediction for a Cowboys W is correct, but I'm skeptical.
However...bosox: The Cowboys obviously have a snowball's chance in hell. I have the Pats winning, but this will be a barn-burner. Close game to the finish. And like Dudski said, Romo is humble enough to let the playmakers win the game but cocky enough to go out and take over if he feels like it. Patriots clearly have the edge on paper, but you can never underestimate Romo, especially coming off of the worst game of his career.
BoSox-I think it will be one of two outcomes, a close Cowboy victory or a one sided win for New England. If it is a big win for the Patriots, then we have to start thinking about whether this could be a 16-0 team.
OneSouthernLion-It's hard to handicap football this year. Everyone says the AFC is much stronger, but is that really true? Some of the good teams there are much weaker than in the past. A good example is Pittsburgh. They are playing well, but their opposition has been inept. The Chargers are in decline, the Broncos are inexplicably bad. I guess we will find out Sunday.
Husker-The thing I hate about NFL coverage is that the announcers seem to try and tie everything up neatly. Then when momentum shifts, all the good things they said about one team are forgotten and they start describing the team now in the lead as some reincarnation of the 16-0 Dolphins.
DMitch-Romo is definitely the X factor. He can sustain drives better than any quarterback Dallas has had since Aikman. He just has a knack of moving the chains. That will keep you in games, even against the Patriots.
Ian-I feel the same way. Dallas needs to win this one, not just for Dallas but for the whole league. New England's cheating crossed a line and there needs to be some sort of psychic justice administered. I hope it comes in Dallas Sunday.
Dudski
I think and hope that above all the game will live up to the hype. You've got two dynamic teams that are out to prove something. And with Moss he's out to prove that he's out not yet over the hill like everyone else thought he was.
Check out my rampantfanatic site where I've got the following post Soulja' Boy Says #### It Up Do The Superman !
Though under this guise I've posted We Gave Us This You Gave Us That ! A little analogy as to the comparative cultural differences between the Brits and The Americans. Let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ?
The one thing I can't stand is the constant slob-knobbing that all sports analysts do for the Pats(stand up Sean Salisbury), every other team that gets analyzed, it yes they are good but..., and with the Pats its, they're great, they can't be beat, they will win every game. The Pats haven't played anybody thats any good, and neither have the Cowboys. That was the criticims thrown at my Steelers, and their combined record of opponents is better then both the Pats and Boys. The Pats will lose, whether it is tomorrow, next week, or somewhere down the road. The Pats are a great team, but good lord, they aren't the best ever, and they can be beat.
This is New England's game to lose. Dallas can play in their overhyped division and inferior conference but let's see what they do against a real team. I'm not saying Dallas can't win. All I am saying is New England is the better team and they will have to make a lot of mistakes for Dallas to win. I see New England losing a game this year but I don't see it from Dallas.
Tophatal-I'm with you on wanting a good game. Sometimes these great matchups come unglued. I'm hoping both teams play to their ability, in which case we should have something fun to watch.
Buckles-The hype is ridiculous. Ever since the Patriots off season free agent signings the media has had a thing for New England. They are very, very good but five games into the season is too early to proclaim any team as great.
Dan-I think the Patriots and Cowboys divisions are pretty close. Buffalo, the Jets, Miami? Hardly an impressive bunch. As for the NFC East, I would not count out the Redskins or Giants.
Gotcha swinging from the rafters on this one, huh, Dudski?
I've got a few too many folks covering my every word these days, so I can't afford to take any broad swipes at professional sports journalists right now. It seems everytime I do I pay a price. More on this later.
It would be a BIG win for 'Big D' if they can get one against the Pats.

Mr Duski!! Congratulations for your ambivalence regarding who will win the tomorrow's game..I am also confused..However, being a Redskins's fan, I will definitely root for Patriots 17-6...Dallas should be humble before they meet us...specially T.O. must stop writing locker room memo for reporters.
dudski, Patriots Cowboys divisions pretty close? It's laughable to compare the NFC east and the AFC east. NFC east is 12-6, only the AFC south 14-4 is better in the NFL. The AFC east is 7-13, the NFC south is 7-12, so the AFC east is the worst division in the NFL.
The NFC east has a chance to get 3 teams into the playoffs, just like last year. The NFC east is always one of the best in the NFL. The AFC east has Miami(possible #1 pick in draft), Buffalo & the NYJ both possible top ten selectors. The division is terrible. NE has 6 gimmes this year.
One way or another we're not going to be too concerned as to who or what'll happen.
Just as long as our teams make it into the playoffs.
I'd watched the game between the USF Bulls and UCF Knights. And the whole of C Florida was rivetted by it all. The Bulls downed the Knights 64-12 and probably solidifying their position inside the top 5.
Papipoul-I hate to admit it, but I am starting to fear the Redskins. The defense is outstanding and Campbell is gaining confidence every time out. The rivalry is back (as if it ever left). Hail to the Redskins!
QCisco-You're right. It makes it hard to evaluate the Patriots. They pretty much have a throw down hand against the own division. Tomorrow is a good test for both teams.
Mean-Sounds interesting. Looking forward to reading more from you soon. Saw the counter. Once you get going it's going to spin the wheels off. You'll have to send out for more digits.
Tophatal-The Central Florida story is amazing. Look how far they have come. It's like they have become the Miami teams of a few years back, and have done it almost overnight.
Dudski
Now they're getting the recognition they so richly deserve. How about the loss today of both Cal and LSU ?
Who the hell saw both of those losses coming ?
It's a measure that the college season has become so topsy turvy this season. Now the pollsters will really have to make the right sort of judgements as to who will be #'s 1 & 2 in the rankings. No favoritism there do ya ' think ?
Dudski
The #### slapping that the Cowboys got was well deserved. And with Jerry Jones' aesthetics seeming to fall apart. What else can anyone ask for at this moment in time ?
Now what's all the more surprising is the standing of the USF Bulls in the BCS polls.
They're indeed the Cinderella story of the college football season so far and not the likes of Appalachian St or Stanford. Their programs have been going on longer than USF's. I've a new post up under this guise titled The Kings Of The Ring .....The Pride And The Passion ! Let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ?
