You will not be scored on this test. It will take only 10 seconds and you may make one answer and one answer only. Experience has proven that your first answer has a better chance of being correct. Relax and pick up your pencils. Here is your question.
Vick or Romo and why?
Put your pencils down. Pass your papers to the front. We will now go over your answers.
Those of you who picked Vick cited his tremendous athletic ability. "The forerunner of a new breed of quarterback who accelerates the game with his speed and running ability. Powerful arm that can make any throw from anywhere on the field. Reminds you of Bobby Douglas." OK, who is the wise guy? "Star quality. Creates an excitement around team." Very well then.
Let's hear from the Romo supporters. "Can buy time in the pocket. A competitor. Quick release. Involves all weapons in the offense. Tough. A leader. Dating Jessica Simpson." Rumored to be dating, just rumored. Alright class, do we have statistics to back up either arguement?
Let's look at the numbers. Romo has a 15 point higher completion percentage, a 30 point higher passer rating, more yards, and compable touchdown to interception ratio. And he's done all this in fewer games.
Anyone wish to change their votes? A few of you Vick supporters appear to be wavering.
OK, for what it is worth, and it is probably not much, here is my vote. I pick Vick.
NFL scouts are alot of things. They are often wrong about overprojecting upside, but they seldom miss by underating anyone. Vick was a 1st round pick, Romo wasn't picked. Unless this is the biggest blunder since Unitas, Vick will have a better career.
Arm strength and speed do matter. Perhaps Vick has so much of both that he overthrows some balls or gives up on plays too early when he sees the chance to run, but at the end of the day he is a nightmare to defend against. Atlanta hasn't found the combination of players to put with him to exploit his unique ability. Yet. But if they ever do, and get a game plan that doesn't consist of two running plays to Dunn and going for a big play from Vick on third down he could be special.
Romo puts the ball at risk on occasion by hanging it up high. Vick puts his receivers at risk by drilling them in the chest with balls that are hard to react to.
If you look at the reasons people give for picking Romo, alot deal with personality and perceived leadership. What makes Romo a leader and Vick a selfish modern player? Imagination. The truth is we don't know either player and don't work around him. The perceptions may be right, but just as easily could be wrong. And "character" players who suddenly emerge at QB tend not to last. Ask Joe Kapp.
Romo's upside is what it is right now. He is at a level that will be hard to sustain. Vick has so much potential there is still upside that is untapped.
It's not an easy choice. It's not the only defendable choice, but I'd go with Vick. If I had to win a game tomorrow, though, it's Romo. With any luck we'll be having this debate for years to come.
If I were drafting these guys out of college (I have no idea what university Romo came from), I'd probably still go with Vick. He has the talent & upside to be the best QB ever.
But like you said, if I had to win a game tomorrow...Romo would probably be the choice.
For comparison, I'd like to see what Vick could do on that Cowboys team. A game or two lining up with a star on his helmet would definitely settle the argument for good. He'd either flourish with a better group of receivers, or he would have the same results that he has had in Atlanta.
Shooter-that is a great question. With Dallas I think he'd have the weapons to achieve more and exploit his talent. If Romo went to Atlanta I think he'd complete a higher percentage, win about the same number of games (or maybe one or two more), and be a fan favorite.
Great question. Well spoken from both sides. I'm a die hard Vick fan who's not a fair-weather fan. I will support my favorite player until the end. Vick just has had the right mix of people on offense to flourish (from the O-line to receivers to offensive coordination to great defensive personnel). He is still young at age 25 or 26, so he has plenty of time to do big things before his career is over.
I do support Romo too. I love how he has revitalized the Cowboys, but I must admit, for a selfish reason. I would love to see T.O. win a ring without and before Donovan McNabb and the Eagles. Athletes restructure contracts all the time (and so did Eagles with McNabbs, as well as broke-up-all-the-time Westbrook) What hypocrisy! Plus, I hate how the media go out of their way to blow up EVERY SINGLE THING T.O. does just to create a negativite story. So go Romo-mania!
I guess what this question really boils down to is what makes a great QB. I'm going to throw this out there and I'm sure I'm going to get beat up for it but.... Troy Aikman wouldn't have been half the QB he ended up being if it wasn't for a tremendous offensive line. He had all day to sit in the pocket and make plays. He also had a leadership ability that made people want to make plays. Without the proper motivation a team can go down hill real quick ie...Atlanta. Personality does have alot to do with it especially from a leadership point of view. I'd pick Romo for that reason if not any others.
To truly compare the two they would have to be on teams with similar talent. I don’t think the Falcons are up to the talent level of the Cowboys.
I’m not sure if Romo could make the Atlanta receivers any better than what they are. But who is to say that TO or Glen (???) could catch one of Vick’s bullets.
If I had to build a team and I had to choose one right now it would be Romo. I don’t like running QB’s, a QB that can scramble and if he needs to could run for a first down. I don’t want my QB to be a running back, that’s why I have running backs and their careers are typically short, hence why I don’t want my QB to run.
A floater or a bullet, (that could be taken out of context) Romo has floated a few (haven’t we all) and that’s just begging some defensive back to get a pick. (Here’s you pick of a floater) But Vick has a different problem than a young Elway did, Elway learned to back off on the pass after a couple of years but Vick hasn’t yet.
Sorry I got a little carried away with the answer.
Just to explore the notion that it is still a "team game"...Vick has been to the playoffs before, even the NFC championship game. So to say he could never be a winner isn't exactly accurate. He hasn't done great this year, but I think the Falcons have a lot of other problems too.
I'm stunned that Miracle came up with an intelligent answer. When did he turn into Alfred Einstein?
I'd take Vick, just because it's too early in Romo's career. The level of a QB's play depends so much on the players around him, obviously. I think Vick would thrive with Romo's receivers. Hard to say, though. I'm curious to see how Romo will fare in the future. He sure looks good now, but sometimes when defenses get more familiar with a QB's style, they can adjust.
Vick has never been more than a runningback ...even in college he completed less than 50% against college defenses!!! romo is a joke!!! O/J. is a piece of #### murderer of people and vick is a piece of #### dog torteourer and killer!!! I hope somebody beats them both within inches of their misreble lives!!!
