Apparently Pujols’s trainer is a bud of HGH sales mogul Jason Grimsley. Sound familiar? Now who’s wonderintg why Pujols was so vocally supporting Bonds in the media a few weeks ago? Not I, I know they probably have played poker together using amphetamines as chips. (“Okay Barry, the red ones are 5 the greenies 25.”)
So when all this #### is about to break, Pujols is “injured” chasing after a pop foul—not sliding for the ball, just on the way there. Convenient that it was a foul ball, so a fake injury wouldn’t cost the team runs or be counted as an error. Anyway, then Albert “strains his oblique,” whatever that is, and declares that he needs to go on the DL for a long time. Other medical sources say this is a 15-30 day thing, and not long term. Nothing shows up on the MRI. All anybody can say is that it’s a shame Pujols won’t break the home run record and get baseball out from under the steroid cloud. Turns out it wouldn’t have anyway.
Everybody who has eyes has been narrowing them at Pujols after the Bonds scandals. In the words of Roxette, “he’s got the look.” Now his trainer is doing drug deals with the guy who described the “Leaded” and “Unleaded” coffee pots in MLB clubhouses? (Leaded pots contained amphetamines and other stimulants.) Doesn’t look too good for Albert or baseball.
So did Pujols fake an injury so he could get away (to rehab maybe) and clean the drugs out of his system? Or did Bud say “get out of town for a while, Al” while they let a skinnier Soriano take over the home run lead? Meanwhile this stuff could shake out with lesser known players and teams grabbing the limelight and lessening the eventual impact of the broadening new drug scandal.
I for one think it’s a bit convenient for a supposedly 26-year old player who had never been on the DL to pull up lame under these circumstances with an unverifiable injury. But then again, maybe I’ve had too much “Unleaded” this morning.
Dr C, There'll be more to come out of this whole situation. And no one more than baseball itself will be hurt by the accusations and allegations. The players themselves will probably on bare strain of a fine at best or a light jail sentence. What the hell they've got the money to pay a high priced lawyer to defend them ! As for Pujols his situation apppears to be tenuous, because if the allegations turn out to be true he will heve to suffer the consequences of his actions. He's one of the League's poster boys at present up there along side Jeter and A-Rod. I'd cetainly like to see the list of names on Grimsley's affidavit.
i would like to see the list too... as for a "fake injury" where have you been all season? AP has been playing hurt for awhile now. Last I heard playing 5 years will take the toll on a player
Interesting again the Grimsley is a pitcher. Still no one wants to attack the Rocket, who sat out all of April and May, did he avoid steroid detection?
This has taken away from Bonds for awhile, but face facts, the leaded pots is amphetamines and not steroids. Still these are illegal and give you added energy. The case for wiping out records will have to go way back if you include greenies because many players used these and admit to it, including Mike Schmidt. Nice post. If you get a minute, check out my Detroitsportsfan assignment. Just posted.
Wow, this is one of the dumbest posts I've seen. Pujols got injured at least a week before any of the Grimsley stuff came about, not afterwards. Pujols himself said he thinks he can be back in 15 days, if he were trying to go and hide he would not say something like that to put more pressure on himself to get back. I also like how if a player gets a lot of fluky injuries it must be because of what steroids have done to his body. OMG GRIFFEY MUST HAVE BEEN ON THEM!!! And now if someone who has never had a serious injury gets hurt he must be faking it because he is scared he might get caught with performance enhancers. Apparently the only way someone can be great and clean is if they are really good, but not too good, they occasionally get injured with varying severity, not too many injuries though because that is the steroids taking their toll, but not too infrequently because that means he is faking. hhhh, gotta love people who are certified haters.
Crab - Is he "supposedly" 26 years old? I never heard of there being a dispute about his age similar to a Julio Franco who I believe is 63.
These guys are on so much stuff that it leaves me dizzy. The thing that annoys me the most is not wondering who is or isn't, but rather how the MLB powers dictate who goes down for what.
Pujols may or may not be guilty of some shady stuff. I would say the connection you make coupled with the fact that St. Louis & Oakland's franchises are basically joined at the hip are the makings of a circumstantial case against him.
I think some of the problem is probably also weight training. Pick up one of those baseball encyclopedia's that lists team rosters by year and all player's stats and you'll see seasons (like the Yankees in 64') where hardly any players were on the DL at all (including pitchers). You would never have seen them hitting the weights because they felt they would have lost quickness and been prone to muscle injuries. Now, you almost need 40~50 players to get through one season.
Thanks for commenting everybody. I've really been taking advantage of being a blogger versus a sportswriter. The responsibilities of the latter would of course prevent writing a post like this. But, a blogger I am so speculate I shall. For this blog, I am the Decider!
tophat--Speaking of Jeter and ARod we shouldn't forget that Grimsley was on the Yankees...but both those guys have normal physiques.
clinch--¡materia divertida! (funny stuff)
cardsfan--I'm not going to pretend that this isn't speculation, I'm just saying that the timing is su####ious. Take it with a grain of salt.
nfrill--I wouldn't consider myself a "hater", there looks to be enough swirling around to speculate. If you want a pro-Pujols love-fest, check out a St. Louis newspaper website.
Norcal--There is a question as to his real age. I've heard it quite a bit on sports talk radio, for what it's worth (not much.)
Circumstantial is right, and I wouldn't take it to a judge. I don't know, Pujols may have the blood test of an altar boy, but things don't look like that right now.
Dudski--You're right, there's all sorts of ways of pushing your body beyond its natural limits. If you look at Ripken, he was a strong guy, but hardly a body builder type.
Conspiracy theories. Gotta love em'! I hadn't heard that Pujols' trainer is a friend of Grimsley's. Even if the connection is a coincidence it certainly looks quite sketchy.
I had heard something to the extent that Grimsley got exposed by the FBI because he wasn't willing to go undercover and try and get Bonds to incriminate himself. Now that is some Law and Order type $h!t.
Crab - On the subject of pushing your body, there are certain limits. I took it quite a ways without even vitamins or supplement, heck even aspirin when I lifted weights. At one point the ceiling is reached, or at least it was for me.
I imagine in a Twilight Zone universe where I insisted on being a pro athlete I would have had to take something. Whether or not this meant natural, legal (whatever that means) supplements or dipping into the steroids, etcetera would be pure speculation on my part.
I think it's interesting how nobody brings up just how Ripken was able to play 2000+ games, the subject of him taking amphetimines, greenies, never comes up. The same goes for Tejada's streak. I personally don't care about the greenies stuff though, that is just for added injury, one could accomplish the same thing by drinking an assload of energy drinks.
rivjo--Why do they want Bonds so bad? That's some pretty weird stuff. I'm starting to feel like the guy is being scapegoated by the whole damn country. Scary.
I could care less if Bonds is being scapegoated, he deserves everything he gets. As for Pujols' age, he was born in the Dominican Republic but he has been living in the United States, Independence, MO, since his highschool years, so his age is not an issue in my mind, it's not like the guys that come across the waters as adults and just claim an age.
Norcal--Personally, I doubt I'd take roids considering the side effects but I don't know about some of those uppers if i thought it would give me an edge. I drink a lot of coffee.
nfrillman--Tejada? I think Palmiero brought him up pretty good.
As far as the age thing, I've just heard rumors. I don't think it matters much either.
You'd better not say anything anti-Cardinals, because nfrillman will get very, very upset.
From now on, I'm only going to blog about how not overrated Jim Edmonds is as a defender and about how So Taguchi's impressive 2006 campaign warrants him a spot on the 2006 All-Star team.
Thank you for setting me on the path to enlightenment, nfrill.
Anyway, I don't think this article was meant to be taken seriously, but it does make you think, considering all of the puzzle pieces that can be linked together. The Pujols-perforamnce enhancing speculation is nothing new, really, but it's just the first time it's been brought out into the national spotlight.
My controversy mate! Nice post. That is a very interesting turn of events. The injury was very weird. I watched the play, he wasn't doing much. The tie to Grim is quite su####ious.
I have heard a couple of times that Grim is going to name names. I am dying to hear this. I would love to see the lid blown off of this thing.
Pujols is now saying he is not sure when he will return and that he will take his time. Of course, this is the same type of injury Nomar got swinging a bat during the last game of spring training. Apparently it is not that rare.
Go Trinidad! I missed the UK game this morning. A bit early on a saturday morning for me. Ecuador looked good yesterday...sorry enough world cup.
Ultra--Funny.
I've actually kicked around the whole Pujols/juiced thing in comments here and message boards elsewhere for months. And it's not like I made it up either.
northsidefan--I'm glad you appreciate my stirring the pot a bit. I think the feds are really pushing him to give up as many people as possible. I'm a little bit of the school of "don't you have something better to do FBI? Like catch terrorists?" I guess they don't get as many chicks as ball players.
socal--Pujols' injury keeps getting fishier and fishier.
Nomar getting injured? that's definitely not rare. He pulls a hammy taking a ####.
saint--I'd accept anything over 25 cents personally. Less than that goes down the car seat usually.
UltraMega, I never said that Edmonds deserved to be at the All Star game this season, and I certainly never said anything about So Taguchi being there. That can be explained by the billions of people from his homeland supporting him, same reason Yao Ming always the leading vote getter. I defended Scott Rolen being considered as the All-Star starter and explained why Molina is getting votes, I never said that I would put Molina as the starter or even in the game. By the way, in the past 12 games Molina has raised his BA 50 points, just saying. Rolen also happens to be on a 13 game hitting streak with hits in 20 of his last 21. I know people begin to hate teams that are continually good like the Cardinals, Braves, Yankees, Red Sox, Patriots, Spurs, and Pistons, so I'm not surprised to find people nitpicking about the Cardinals. I will agree with you about Howard needing to be the All-Star game 1b if Pujols is out though.

Nice post DrCrab-- makes me wonder why a great hitter like Pujols would use 'roids. He has never been a power hitter but he was one of the best hitters in the game. Oh well another great career is in the ditch of 'roids.
