Somewhere right now Steve Kerr is saying, “These are the best playoffs I’ve ever seen.” He may even be sleeping, but he’ll still say it once or twice. Even without Kerr’s frothings some of us have thought the same thing throughout this year’s NBA playoffs. The NBA has already completed five memorable and competitive series if you count Nets-Pacers. Of course it was impossible to see Nets-Pacers because it was mostly on NBA-TV which is only available in Guam. The NFL Network is on my digital cable setup (they’re currently showing the Hamburg Sea Devils at the Amsterdam Admirals) along with 500 other channels including the Bloomberg Channel (log any time with that one?) Somehow NBA TV was not able to squeeze in. So lets make that four memorable series, and countless memorable moments.
Is Brent Barry’s 3-pointer still bouncing on the rim? Did LeBron really cop a feel of Arenas, or was he just trying to rip out his heart (again)? Nobody’s surprised to see Kobe hit the clutch shot but how about Tim “Left by the Curb” Thomas? That was just the first round. Now we have three game 7s within the space of 36 hours. This feast is a basketball binge that rivals the first two days of the NCAA tournament. Except the players, coaches, teams and even the fans are even better. After MJ retired for the 3rd or 4th time, pundits were crying about the lack of star power in the NBA. How many potential MVP’s are playing in the next two days? Eight--James, Billups, Nash, Brand, Duncan, Parker, Marion and Nowitski. Then there are two of the best defensive players of all time (Ben Wallace and Bruce Bowen) two guys who stepped up and threw down (Michael Finley and Raja Bell) and one guard who looks decidedly like a hammerhead shark (don’t make me say it).
So who do you think is going to make the moment? LeBron again? Dirk? Steve Nash? Maybe, but it could be all of the above and more. I hope it’s a crazy and controversial sprint to the tape. Because there are two more rounds to go to build the case that Steve Kerr has not lost his mind. Three more 7s to add to the legend of Playoffs ’06--let it roll.
Good luck to everybody in the NGS 2 selection tomorrow!
Rev--first off, amazing screen name.
That's a dark time in mid summer. Maybe I'll be at the beach for some of that time, but it's not like I don't want to watch sports at the beach! The NFL comes to the rescue eventually.
I'm the "poster." I titled my blog Lucky 7's because I liked the sound of it. I honestly hadn't seen your blog before posting mine (you'll notice my's blog's title is "Lucky 13" also). However, if you think it's too close to your's than just let me know and I'll try to think of some other snappy title. Peace.

Nice, and my money is on Spurs, Clippers, and Pistons, but in the end, the HEat take it all.
Thanks for stopping in and glad you were not offended. I had several ways to go with your picture, but chose that one. I almost put crabman from My Name is Earl, since I started calling you that long ago, but did not want to offend.
thanks kp! the first one didn't finish up so close. It's tough to win 1 on 5 but LeBron almost did it. Reminds me of a joke from "Kicking and Screaming" (not a great movie, but Robert Duvall is always great) which I saw on digital cable late-night: What do you call someone who almost wins? A loser. But LeBron is only 21 and scary good. Maybe he'll retire to play AA baseball.
socal--I was totally impressed with that Crab dude picture. I don't know where you dug that up considering that I've been combing the net for crab pix for months. It was a cool idea for your post and I'm glad you liked my socal one!
Well we're not winning the car for sure because the first bar landed on a smushed cherry. I saw the game in spurts, and basically it was like a really fast person toying with a really slow person.
Let's hope the West saves us tomorrow night.
The conference finals I am a little leery of. Detroit isn't going to lose focus against Miami after this debacle. Will the winner of the DAL/SA series really be tested? I'm not seeing it. If there is a 7th game in either I'll be surprised.
pat--am I to assume that you are that gambling junkie? If there was blackjack near me I'd play. I used to play at a firehouse in Maryland, won some money actually. But I always lose in AC.
Norcal--Yeah, that first 7 was anti-climatic. Although I was glad to see LeBron get taken out b/c I would rather see a team than a one man team. But he runs a hell of a one man team.
I'm a little more optimistic than you about the next round. I think Wade can take it at least to 6 games w/Detroit and I think Nash has got this leadership ability to really have the Suns step up. Maybe this is wishful thinking though.
First, a little housecleaning. The other night, I placed 2nd in an online tournament by a player who had "crab" somewhere in his screen name. Just making sure that you didn't take my money...say it ain't so...
Good luck to you in the selection...
The playoffs have been good so far...maybe restoring some fan interest in the game. Don't know who will rise to the top, but you get the feeling that it could be something very unique. Possibly even heroic, if that isn't too strong a term...to be determined.
ed--I like the new promo...I think truth in advertising is a good idea.
Shooter--No, wasn't me. I don't do any online poker b/c I'm too agressive of a player and I get wiped out too fast. I like blackjack, but you have to drive to the casinos for that one and I'm about 4 hours from Atlantic City. Good luck to you too in the selection!
thing that's impressing me is there's no give up in any of these teams -- you could say possibly nets but i didn't really see it there either -- I think the pistons series was storybook -- I'm trying to think about jordan and how dejected he must've looked after his playoffs against detroit -- somehow I just can't picture jordan that upset but he had to have been -- good stuff doc
Thanks, Mav! I don't know if Jordan was as demonstrative as LeBron. There's an amazing picture of LeBron ####ing after a foul call on washingtonpost.com. He's right out there with all of his emotions. Whatever works--I guess Rasheed has a ring with his drama so it probably doesn't hurt.
OK DrCrab, glad it wasn't you that schooled me in poker...
I would much rather play poker in the casinos...but that's difficult where I live, "The Land of the Lost". Actually have one a couple of hours away...but not as good as a couple of clicks away.
Nice post Crabman...really looking forward to today's two Game 7's, both should be excellent games. Is everyone rooting for Spurs-Suns rematch or some new Clippers-Mavs blood?
I, too, like the title/theme... good to see you're not too over-reactive & possessive about it. I never thought to check titles before I post.
It's not exactly making the moment, but I liked the work of Lindsey Hunter yesterday.
Try catching sports without cable! Or anything except 24 for that matter. Actually, that's probably for the best, since it leaves me time for other things... like bicycling! I was going to ask you how you survived last week, which was National Bike-to-Work Week... but you've already changed your mini-blog! You should consider archiving those somehow.
As for this week's, how about Talia Shire & her Connie Corleone canoli... yikes!
Thanks, Moore...I'm splitting the difference and rooting for Suns-Mavs mostly because I think that would involve the most scoring. There's something appealing to all of the West teams though, but I don't like how LA stooped to conquer (losing to drop to the sixth seed and get home court in round 1)
absolute--thanks, ab! Stay strong, they're going to have to broadcast NBA TV somewhere eventually. I think it may be David Stern in a cut-out cardboard box that has "TV" written on it in crayon.
MC--Thanks, I think Hunter definitely stepped up too. I'm a little worried about the Pistons' Offense, I know they like to grind it out, but the Cavs defense isn't that good. They need Hunter and McDyess to step up and they need to get the ball to Rip a lot too.
I was cable-less for a while, now I swear by it. Are you of the "I'm an athlete so I won't get cable and turn into a couch potato" school or a "cable's a waste of money" person? Maybe option 3?
I used to bike a lot but then I sold my bike because it started having some problems. I don't mind bikers riding normally, but have you noticed that most bikers ignore all traffic laws (stop signs, red lights...)
I do feel bad that I have a bit of a sexist mafia actor list, but people in the mob are sexist too, so that makes it okay? (probably not)
Crab - Well what can I say, they took 6/25 from my eligible field (TT & Dan don't count as foreigners) and you weren't one of 'em. Maybe the FP thing hurt you, I really can't say. Whatever. A few of the choices as usual surprised me. I certainly felt like you were worthy of a spot.
Seems like you were right to be worried about the Pistons O (on Tuesday anyway).
I would comment on the game tonight, but watching internet updates just doesn't scream, "Riveting!" Cable-lessness: If I had cable, I'd be more likely to lose sleep or employment rather than activity. Uh, guess that's a "good" reason not to have it.
Road cyclists do have a law unto their own... woe is the unwary pedestrian... lucky for me, I was accompanied by a dog who took a chomp outta that guy's bike shorts.
Oh, and I wasn't trying to give you any flak about your mafia actors! It's probably safe to say that mafia & mafia media is pretty sexist. (If speaking of the mafia is ever safe.) I was originally going to mention Andy Garcia, but he's a bit of a pretty boy. Thought that would dainty up my Lioness image, so I went with a tough canoli... er, cookie. :)
