As a Cardinal fan, I know all too well about Brock-For-Broglio and how after 44 years, the Cubs haven't been able to too much live it down.
But as a guy who lives in a town with one of the worst NBA franchises and one of the best basketball programs this decade, the overnight blockbuster trade that the Grizzlies pulled was a trade that I have mixed feelings about.
First of all, O.J. Mayo, as marketable as he is, isn't the help that the Grizzlies need in the post. He may average 20 points a game and be a candidate for Rookie of the Year, but he isn't what the Grizzlies need.
What the Grizzlies drafted with their 1st round pick in Kevin Love, was a guy that could not only be a beast in the paint, but also a guy with a 15-foot jumper. He would have given Kwame Brown plenty of help in the frontcourt this season.
From what a lot of people said, should O.J. Mayo turn out to be good as advertised, he may jump ship.
If not, then he'll be just like Shane Battier:good pick who played five years in front of half-empty FedEx Forum that saw the lights of New York and Chicago and bounced.
Eccentric, loudmouth, or boy genius, those words do not fully explain me at all. I grew up in Memphis as a Cardinals fan and later parlayed my love for baseball into my writing. Since 2004, I've been a columnist for a small newspaper in Memphis, covering everything from summer camps to prep sports, winning several awards for my columns. I'm also coming out with a new book based on my columns, "Mr. Goodbars and Fly Balls", a heartwarming look at the summer of 2006 and the adventures I had with my friends as the Cardinals won their first World Series in 24 years. That's about it for now.
