Watch Bonds now, while you can

It's great to have Barry back, it really is. I liken it to when Babe Ruth played, or Joe DiMaggio or Willie Mays. You don't want to miss a second. It's like the stories I hear about people who grew up watching Mickey Mantle play, oh man, he was unbelievable.

Well I'm here to tell you, Barry is the same guy. How else can you explain, how after almost a year, Barry steps to the plate two games ago and hits like he's been doing it all year? I can't either.

What I saw him do when I played against him made me respect him; what I've seen him do since I retired has simply blown me away. We look at other athletes like Walter Payton and Jerry Rice and say, they played well into their 30s because of the work ethic off the field. I can tell you Barry works just as hard off the field as on, and has done so since joining the San Francisco Giants back in 1993. Gary Sheffield said a couple of years ago that he couldn't keep up with Bonds and his off-season workouts, and I played with Gary in Florida and I know how hard he works to stay in shape.

Barry made himself into a hitting machine by what he has done off the field. You may want to cut him some slack, because if you don't know greatness when you see it and you want to keep saying he cheated or something stupid like that ... well then, I can't help you. But if you are like me, and you know players do work hard and can make themselves better, then just enjoy his greatness and don't question things that don't matter.

And the past two nights I've been glued to the TV, waiting for every at-bat, because I know I won't see another player like him in my lifetime, and I don't want to miss my chance to see him play. You may want to do the same. Because 20 years down the road, you'll be saying, I could've seen the best ever, but I was just too stupid to do it.

Please you guys have to stop sucking up to bonds. He didn't take steroids? He's in his prime and hitting 30,35 homers and now he's closing in on 40 and he's hitting 70 stop. name another hitter who did the same thing. plus every one else associated with Balco has been linked to the scandel.Bonds,McGuire,Sosa,Palmero,
Pudge all Losers.

I'm sorry to say it Rob,but I am not and never have been a Bonds fan. If someone told me I could have tix to a Giants game I would ask who they were playing and if it wasn't a team I like, they could give the tix to someone who wants them. Even if he didn't do roids I can't stand seeing him because he is and always will be a complete BUTTHOLE and I'm tired of hearing about him. He is not always a headline. Let the guy who actually played get his face on sportscenter. Andruw Jones led in homeruns last year while Bonds was out and still all anyone on sports shows talked about was Bonds. If it comes out that he did do roids MLB should do what Frank Robinson said and take away every stat he ever had, and that would go for every player cought. I truely believe that. When I was a kid I was a Palmeiro and Canseco fan and I think both of them should be banned from the hall along with any other player cought. I'm sorry this is so long but someone has to say it! DIBBLE IS THE MAN!

maybe Bonds does work out a little more than anyone else in the off season.but how much of that can be contributed to this whole balco fiasco? Please don't tell me there are people out there who believe he didn't know. maybe Bonds needs the famous * sign near his name in the books

Mr Dibble,
well let's see. Today's players are everything and Ruth's era is nothing? try hitting a much less livlier ball farther! oh by the way, what's Bonds' picthing record compared to Ruth's? and oh by the way, how many of Bonds home runs with out steriods (that he did admit taking "the clear and the cream") would have been ordinary fly outs with out them? no steriods or human growth hormones don't help eye/hand coordination, but it does increase strength. otherwise why do the ballplayers who took them take the health risks? on top of all that, Bonds is a raciest Jerk who made HIMSELF hated. his comments and actions are offensive. sorry Dibbs, what your writing is Barry Hype! I don't buy into it and as far as I'm concerned he didn't really break any records!

Rob,

I think the problem in your defense of Bonds is that you're approaching it from a former player's perspective. I generally get the impression that players are more like a fraternity and the integrity of records are secondary in importance. From a fan's perspective, records and the breaking of records are like sports Bibles to the true afficionado. Any record broken under questionable circumstances undermines the integrity of the game. You mentioned Mickey Mantle and how unbelievable he was to the fans who saw him play. I was one of them and I agree. But it hurts me that today's fans think 536 home runs was a very good career but nothing to go wild about. With smaller ballparks, a lively baseball, an overall decline in great pitching I would not be surprised if someone legitimately would come along and break Maris' record. But in my book it sure wasn't McGwire, Sosa or Bonds that did it. And I really don't wanna hear about no proof of balls going farther on steroids. Does any true baseball fan think Sammy Sosa wouldve come close to those numbers without the aid of steroids? Even Canseco admitted he wouldn't have been a major leaguer if not for steroids - and we are talking about a former MVP!
And the main culprit himself -Bonds - said that for some inexplicable reason in recent years balls he hit that would reach the warning track were now goin out. It may be a mystery to him and you but not to the rest of us.

All of you people who think you know what Barry Bonds has done to get to where he is, needs to quit. I am not a Barry Bonds fan by any means..However, I give props when props are due. Nothing has ever been proven that Bonds has taken anything..All you have is a book by two people who are speculating. No one has come forward and said that they personally gave Bonds anything or that they personally witnessed him taking anything..All it is hearsay. And until it is proven in court or Barry himself admits it then dont waste your time. If MLB really had proof that he was taking steriods they would have suspended him a long time ago..No one never mentioned Mark McGuire being on steriods when he was chasing Babe Ruth record..Now that Bonds has tied and will pass Babe Ruth everyone wants to jump on the band wagon. Now I understand why Bonds is an #### hole some time..I would be to, if I had to constantly answer to redicule and speculation..The hell with all of you..Let the man play the game..And if he breaks Hank's record more power to him...
