Results of Sportswriter Challenge???
Aug 15, 2007 | 6:50AM | report this

Well, the 14th has come and gone. Anyone have an idea why we don't yet know who's made it through to the next round? I can't imagine an easier process: whichever writer in a pairing scored the highest moves on.

Let's go guys, tell us who moves on!

The photo you used is appropriate.

Florida election officials are laughing at FoxSports.com for how they handled the whole thing.

Saddam Hussein would have been proud to run an election like this.

They haven't even said how they are selecting the winners -- is it the highest number of votes per round or is it the highest average rating?

They've had some contestants whose blogs could be voted on when others couldn't. Links didn't work.

They have a judge with a clear conflict of interest. They insist on putting contestants up in the BOTD and generating traffic (and votes) for them.

You could click the back button and vote multiple times to stuff the ballot box (the judge's claim that this didn't work is simply not credible).

So where are the results? They aren't done making sure they have the results they want.

Here's my predictions:

JJD
Tvill
Qtrmiler
Dihrdearnhardt
Steeler
JoshQPublic
IowaGirl
KValus

Given my performance in the NCAA BB and NFL Playoff Pools, these people should be exceptionally concerned. We'll see; a number of the pairings were very close, at least in my opinion.

Dave - I am agreeing with you more and more...

go JJD!

And this whole contest is a fallacy that there can be a fair outcome. Can anyone say "hanging Chads"

Dave, ok I just read the contest page again. The VOTING was over on the 14th and the bracket winners would be announced today. Which means, probably 11:59 pm EST!

Dave - I love the photo! Who knows how they'll notify anyone about it. Thanks for the vote of confidence too.

CCR - I think the rules (which aren't horribly clear) indicate it is totally on popular vote. No electoral college here.

Hotfoot - There are a few glitches in this thing. They've done blogging contests before, but haven't seemed to clarify how things work. Which is much like the Nascar rulebook, as I now think about it! LOL

William - thanks for the vote! As long as it isn't a number torturing contest, I may have a chance against JJD!

Iowa, they say popular vote. But then they have a rating system. Does a vote for "Tastes Like Horse ####" in the one box count the sames as "It's the Necter of the Gods" in the five box? What do they do with the "It Kind of Tastes Like Beer" in the three box?

Or do they average everything and go from there.

If you call what they've had "few glitches" that's fine. Fair elections and a level playing field are not too much to ask.

Lori - Agreeing is good. It's not often fun, but good nonetheless. And yes, I AGREE it will be 11:59p

William - I'm thinking Josh could be the snoozer in this group - better watch him. He can write, and once he gets his NASCAR legs, look out.

Iowa - I was looking for that photo of the Florida election official with his glasses up on his head, squinting oddly to try to see whether the hole had been fully punched or not, ... couldn't find it.

My stuff is a little photo-centric lately, will tone it down a bit (although personally, I loved the Montoya v. Harvick photos in the last post - "Now THAT'S Racing!").

CCR - Simply console yourself with the knowledge we could still be IN the contest, continuing to hang some element of our self esteem on the outcome of this affair. That issue has been mercifully resolved already.

Iowa - I can turn ANYTHING into "number-torturing". :)

EDIT: In the rules it says the next topic will be revealed at 12:01 am et, 9/16. (That's 9:01 pm tonight, West Coasters, and 7:01 pm in Honolulu.)

Of course, that means we should find out Friday afternoon, if track record is any indication.

Iowa: you are so right!

And as it is stated in the Nascar rulebook, Nascar can change, amend, recompose, deny, allege, manufacture, add, delete, strikeout, and make up any rule at any time with or without warning!

Dave- Thanks for the vote of confidence but I won't count on your prediction track record! ;)

In the spirit of DW's "Co-op-etition" I would like to extend a CONGRATS for a job well done and GOOD LUCK to the Sweet 16.

Perhaps we can all discuss with our crew chiefs the best way to work around the rules for the best results! ;) rather than bother with what the rules actually are...

Anyone got any rocket fuel?

Cheers! Really you all have made being in the contest a whole lot of fun...

Well Dave, my perspective is just slightly different.

Because I'm not in the contest, I can get away with saying things that those who are in the contest cannot.

The bottom line on it is that I feel sick for every one of the eight people who don't make it.

Because they will never know if they lost straight up or because they were in a game that was both fixed and broken.

A marked deck was used to deal the cards they were stuck playing with and that's just wrong.

I expected a surprise or two, knew Josh and Cheviot would be close - both were good pieces - I just preferred JQP's and knew he'd be a tough contender down in the subsequent rounds. I DIDN'T expect JJD to lose at all. That was one of the ones I'd have put in the "easy to pick" category.

Ah well. Join us in the Losers' Lounge, JJD, Steelers, Lisa, JQP, and all the rest! It's just as much fun in here as it is on the brackets.

And congratulations to all. Nice writes all around.

Congrats to everyone who advanced.

To those who didn't, I really feel badly for all of you.

I've never seen so many major upsets in the first round of anything before.

I've got to stick by my earlier posts on this.

c'mon people, throw me a freaking bone or something....my work PC doesn't have flashviewer or whatever the heck it's called so I don't know who's in and who's gone.

judging by the reactions, I am guessing JJD is out which proves this whole thing was nothing but a farce. Proof was the judger's comment about it saying "too wordy"....obviously they wanted it gone for that.

Dave's comment goes some way....but does "all the rest" mean the 16 or what?

I only voted on Iowa and JJD's posts actually....every day....and always with the 5 star thing, lol

The bottom part of that bracket is proving to be a meatgrinder - lots of good writers down there going head to head.

Hey! I think the voters got it right between Klvalus and I. She wrote the better blog, and totally deserves to move on to the next round. We have already contacted each other and she knows I am thrilled that a Cali girl is going to teach some nascar boys how to write. She rocks! Some of the elite 8 were somewhat surprising, but I'm glad the voters got our match-up right! And way to go Gunny!

Ok, I am done being in shock now...drinking helps!

Lisa- Thanks for the resounding support! I think West Coast Girl Power has been noted! I look forward to round two where Iowa and I can continue bring it against the nascar guys!

Dave- you said it. hello meatgrinder!! why oh why did they have to put all the girls against each other?!?!?

I read the subject of the post and thought, "Electoral College."
Then I saw the first pic.

I don't need to read the rest.
It's a c-rap shoot.
