My take on Lance Briggs(More stupid questions)
Aug 30, 2007 | 8:45AM | report this

After seeing his orchestrated response to reporters about the events that transpired last weekend, I came to the conclusion that it was almost brilliant. I mean come on, he bout a new lambourghini, after all this complaining about his contract all summer. Then he probably was out partying and decided to see how fast he could go. Partying = drinking, and drinking + a wreck = police = breathilyzer = DUI = possible suspension by everybody's favorite commish.

Instead he avoided some of that by bookin( running), and calling a tow truck.  He blew it though, by calling the police and reporting it stolen. Instead of just taking the hit financially( car looked totaled), he tried to get over on his insurance company by reporting it stolen. Here is where he could have got into a lot of troble but also drew a bunch of unnecessary attention. The average fan probably has turned on him and this also could affect his free agency next year.

So in conclusion, Briggs probably did panic after the accident but his reasons are murky. His actions later showed me that he was thinking, but he does play linebacker, so he had some mental breakdowns. Thanks to this climate that Goodell has created, we sit and wait, and look to the league office for his punishment.

Good point. I was wondering why more people don't take that approach.

"When you're in a jam...all you have to do is scram."

Being ridiculed sure beats a prison sentence.

I think his punishment should be to have his name branded as a derogatory term. Anytime someone avoids trouble, let them say that he "Briggsed It".

I think they already have his named used in that fashion don't they? If you get a boil "Lance" it?

If I saw that car sitting on the side of the road I'd a stripped that puppy faster than Jessica Alba...those parts are worth as much as the car as a whole!

We can say what we want about how we would react in that kind of situation but we don't really know how we would until it happened! Damn, I got that out. Hope it made sense. Anyway, I think Briggs acted irresponsibly. Good post!

while running will usually get you out of a jam, he had to know they would trace that car to him. high testosterone + $$$(money)= incidents like this one.

To me its really a non story. No one was injured or killed. He used poor judgement and wrecked a car. Commish will suspend him for one game, and that will be that. In less than a year, no one will remember this happened.

Dat~ Seems that most are taking the PC route with Mr. Briggs, trying to believe the bullsh!t flowing from his pie-hole. (Without one shred of proof) I believe Lance was out late partayyying, drinking with some bishes, fell asleep, f'ed up a $400k lambo, called a bud for a ride home, and the rest of it was made up by Lance's PR Director.

I listened to that story Briggs was trying to get the media to believe...and they bought it.

As with the federal government's No Child Left Behind Act. The league will be starting up their own called the No Imbecillic Athlete Left Behind Act. Wherein the players learn the do's and don't's within the league. They'll use Pacman , Vick and almost the entire Bengals' team as an example as what not to do. Briggs is just the latest in what'll be a long line and trend of what'll continue to happen within the league.
The players that believe that they can do as they please be accountable to no one and are condoned in their actions by coaches , trainers , owners and some cases fans.
The outrage and public outcry will only happen when something unconscionable happens.
Inasmuch as Goodell is trying uphold the league's perceived good standing. When the players continue to heap upon it nothing but more problems it can only make things worse !

Yeah, I don't blame him for running. Calling the cops and reporting it stolen was just stoopid, and makes me seriously question his motives. Check out my blog for more thoughts on the matter.

Lance Briggs....sure...got some #### going about his contract...but like all BEARS fans....we support the WHOLE team...not just an indivdual...
who cares if he had an accident..... who hasnt done something stupid in their life one time or another...... i got drunk once and cheered through a Cowboys game..... does that one time of stupidity make me a CB fan...god i hope not... even tho the car looked like #### .....Riggs was out the next day on the feild practicing with NO problems.....thats what his job is and thats what he is paid for...how many #### we know who #### their fingure and take a week off work with some strong pain meds.....

here is a small print from the bears web site....

Asked whether Briggs would be disciplined for the incident, Smith said that no action would be taken.

“Disciplined for what, a one-car accident?” Smith said. “No. He hasn’t broken any team rules as far as I know. At 3 o’clock, you would like for your players to be in. But beyond that, [there are] people out those times of the night without always being in trouble. That’s what I’m going on.”

The Bears had several unpleasant issues to contend with during the offseason, from Briggs’ well-publicized contract impasse to the ongoing Tank Johnson saga. But Smith insisted that Monday’s incident will not become a distraction with the regular season opener less than two weeks away.

“Things like this come up from time to time,” Smith said. “When you pick up the newspaper, there are accidents that happen. Hopefully, there aren’t serious accidents, and that’s where we are. We

You throw this off as if it has no consequence ? What if he'd killed someone and still went through with the same action ?
It's the behavior you look at and not what's perceived as what's good for you and your team. For Smith to think that this saga is over, he's sadly mistaken as it could very well come back ot haunt him and the team.
If he'd encountered an officer at the time perhaps his actions may well have been different. But that shouldn't excuse his behavior. If anything it shows his lack of personal responsibility and total lack of maturity.

what if he had killed someone.....

come on......we could go on and on and on about what if's... this is an accident...now how he handled it...sure...not like what we are SUPPOSE to do....but because of his lack of 'muturity'(which i kinda agree with)...people are looking for his neck...which was my point...kinda retarded....... he makes alot of money...and is young and probably likes to party....but like EVERYONE else in the world...he was trying to get out of any trouble that might happen.... how many people get stopped for speeding and quickly snap the seat belt on to get out of a $25 ticket... even tho it is no big deal.... its still under the same principle... i never said it wasnt wrong for what he did...i just find it crazy to go after his head for it... and this isnt going to come back and haunt the bears...

Does anyone remember the Leonard Little fiasco ? Kills someone while drunk driving then gets off with a slap on the wrist. Repeats the same offense this time without killing anyone but still it's he's playing in the NFL. So what's the real lesson to be learnt here ?
Seems the justice system as we know it isn't that just afterall is n it ?
For Briggs he'll have to answer to Goodell.
As way of an invite check out my latest post titled What's A Man Suppose To Do ? Let me know what you think as to the merit of the piece ? I'll look forward to reading your comments.

Dat I can see your argument here, but I do disagree with a few things...

1st- Lance Briggs drove himself in that beautiful lamborghini. Lance Briggs wrecked the vehicle himself. Lance Briggs ran away on his own two legs.

2nd- Lance Briggs called the police and reported his car stolen. He called his insurance and did the same.

3rd- Lance Briggs committed two crimes. Leaving the scene of an accident, and insurance fraud. Very serious crimes. All punishable.

4th- Lance panics, realizes he is going to be caught. Calls and says, "It was me, and I am sorry!"

Okay I am pretty sure that Chicago has cameras everywhere. I also think that they may have been able to tell who was driving that car. As a matter of fact, they may be able to tell in his movements that he was intoxicated. So you stated you think that it was brilliant?? No it was idiotic. And how in the world are you going to blame Goodell for the climate created in the NFL? If the players acted like they have the sense God gave them, then there would be no reason for the commish to punish them! It is not about get one over on everybody. It is about being a team player at all times, and making good decisions in the personal and professional lives.

All players have to wake up and understand that not just the NFL, but the fans as well are tired of the foolishness that is going on. I want to be able to pick up a newspaper, read a blog or watch TV without having their faces making headline news! They are supposed to be professionals, role models! And I pray they start acting like it!

For all the money Briggs is allegedly making why the hell can't he hire a freakin' drive for the night ? Instead of makin' a complete as*hole of himself. Are there anymore idiots within the league that have yet to make fools of themselves before the season has even opened ? One thing you can be sure of is that there'll be more added to the numbers before the season is over.

well VB_chic,
to date Briggs has not been suspended which might be the case if he got a DUI, that he possibly avoided. I doubt that in an accident they can check if you were drunk if you are not there but maybe they can. Goodell has created the climate that everytime anything happens with a player we wait to see if they are going to be punished. The sensalization of the media is the reason we know that he wrecked his car, which has nothing to do with him playing football.
