Draft Day Jitters
Aug 11, 2008 | 6:42PM | report this

Well here I am again in my 5th season of Fantasy Football. We are a 12 team PPR style league where we do not pick team defenses and we don't use flex players. Each roster consists of 3 QB's, 4RB's, 5WR's, & 2K's. Each week starters are; 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, &1K.

One of the best things I like about our league is that is is heavily weighted on performance. For example we award 6pts./TD, 2pts/reception, 2pts, per 2pt conversions & our kicking scoring adds bonus points for yardage. For example any FG over 50 yards is worth 13pts. We've had in our league kickers earn over 50 pts. in one game at times. Each year we have a draft lottery where your drafting position is determined simply by the draw of a chip.

Twice in the past 5 years I've drafted dead last. My highest draft position was 7th. We do not play H2H. we play simply by weekly winner. highest points win $50 per week. 1st place at the end of the season can pay over $800. (It costs $190 per year to play) Our leage consists of some of the most well prepared fantasy players I've ever seen and people wait years to get into our league. On draft day each owner and his or her partner arrive with cheatsheets, research and various other materials to make the best pics possible. Rarely do these guys make mistakes, and trust me if you make one it will be exploited. I once accidently drafted Duante Culpepper instead of McNabb and my season was ruined. I simply mis-spoke when it was my turn. It was ugly.

Herein lies my dillema. This year I draft 8th. To say I'm dissapointed would be an understatement. In our league the cream of the crop is running backs who catch passes obviously so there will be no wacky stuff when it comes to the first and second round. All the top RB's will be gone by pick 10. I'm a bit tempted to go wild with my pick and do what I like to call QB handcuff. Last season the combination of Romo to Owens, and Brady to Moss was killer. The guy who won the season last year Had Romo/T.O. I'd love to get my hands on Brady/Moss, and maybe sacrifice a stud RB. In our league a running back gaining 100 yds., and maybe 2 TD's is really nothing, since we are a PPR league. After all every 3 catches is the same as a TD, plus yardage bonuses.

So my question is this. What do you think of this strategy. It would be good if I can pull it off, and I might get lucky on a surprise RB in maybe the third round. What do you think.
