O's, Burnitz Close To Deal
Dec 28, 2005 | 9:02AM | report this

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that free agent OF Jeromy Burnitz is close to signing a 2-year deal worth $12 million with the Orioles...

...thanks to james for the link...

...angelos has to be out of his mind. burnitz is on the downside of his career as he turns 37 in april and his ops has been pathetic the last four years save his year in coors...

...if the orioles wanted to spend that kind of money on an outfielder, they should have gone after OF Jacque Jones, who signed a 3-year, $16 million deal with the cubs last week...

...mcadam says that the the players that are expected to be dealt are P David Riske from the indians to the braves and 3B Andy Marte from the sox to the indians...

Update On Prior For Tejada Trade
Dec 23, 2005 | 1:29PM | report this

According to Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 in Chicago, the Cubs are waiting to hear back from the Orioles on a trade that would send P Mark Prior, P Rich Hill and OF Corey Patterson to the Orioles for SS Miguel Tejada and P Erik Bedard...

...this trade makes too much sense for the o's. their big weakness for the last eight years has been god-awful pitching, and they would get one young, cy young quality pitcher and another one with all the potential in the world who also happens to have a zito curveball. they cannot possibly turn this deal down...

...i know the d-backs wanted to get rid of glaus' salary, but they could have and should have gotten a much better deal for him...

Damon Signs With Yankees
Dec 21, 2005 | 3:45AM | report this

According to Dan Roche of CBS4 in Boston, free agent OF Johnny Damon and the Yankees have agreed to a 4-year, $52 million contract

...i can't picture damon in any other uniform but a red sox jersey. seeing him in pinstripes will be especially bizzare and awkward.

...it's still a great signing though...

Wood To Nats?
Dec 20, 2005 | 12:47PM | report this

According to Jim Williams of the Washington Examiner, the Cubs could trade P Kerry Wood to the Nationals for 2B Jose Vidro and OF Ryan Church...

...the cubs have to get more in the deal. whenever you trade one of the best pitchers in the game, let alone the face of the franchise, you get top-notch talent, not vidro and church...

...a wood for 2B Alfonso Soriano trade would make a lot more sense...

Williams says that if the trade goes down, it will happen around the start of spring training...

Mets Bring Back Parra, Feliciano
Dec 19, 2005 | 1:00PM | report this

In addition to signing P Darren Oliver, the Mets signed P Pedro Feliciano and P Jose Parra...

...parra was great in his first stint with us. i was really upset when we let him walk. i doubt he'll ever be that good again though...

...as for feliciano, i could care less. he wasn't that good when he was with us the first time around and he probably won't make the club out of spring training...

Grossman Replaces Orton In Bears Win
Dec 18, 2005 | 8:45PM | report this

QB Rex Grossman replaced QB Kyle Orton at halftime in the Bears 16-3 win over the pathetic Atlanta Falcons...

...orton was terrible. it really says something about the bears that they have been able to win as many games as they have with him at qb...

...the birds were atrocious. vick had what seemed like seven yards of total offense and we couldn't get a first down if the bears were blindfolded. unless hell freezes over anytime soon, we aren't making the playoffs...

Milledge For Kazmir
Dec 18, 2005 | 2:56PM | report this

I saw a thread about this at the Mets MLB.com Forum and I felt the need to ask you guys here.

If you are Omar Minaya and Tampa offers you P Scott Kazmir for OF Lastings Milledge, would you do it and why?

...i would have to do it. kazmir is a left-handed flamethrower who has already succeded at the major league level. there aren't many players i'd trade milledge for, but kazmir deffinetly is one of them...

Fire Millen!
Dec 18, 2005 | 2:15PM | report this

Today in Detroit, fans marched outside and inside the stadium in hopes of seeing their favorite GM Matt Millen lose his job...

...if only we could have done this when Scott Layden was in town...

The following is an exerpt from the article:

Fans carried signs that said "Fire Millen," "Commitment to Ineptness," and "Fed Up." One wore a hat reading "Blame Ford First."

Among their chants were calls of "####, ####, ####, Millen must go."

Many marchers wore orange to support the Bengals rather than the home team. They also wore shirts calling for Millen's firing and marking their participation in the "2005 Angry Fan March."

The anti-Millen signs and chants have surfaced at games of other Detroit sports teams since Thanksgiving, as well as at University of Michigan and Michigan State basketball games.

On Friday night at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace joined fans in the chant during a late timeout in the game against the Chicago Bulls.

Even when the Pistons played in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday night, a fan in the upper deck held a "Fire Millen" sign.

...i feel their frustration. we had to suffer through Jim Dequette, layden and  Glen Sather (we still have him as GM though. now that this happened, i'm sure other protests will soon follow...

...the fact that they are chanting it at college basketball games really tells you something. he should have been let go a very long time ago...

My View Of The Marlins Fire Sale
Dec 18, 2005 | 12:33PM | report this
Remember when the Florida Marlins traded their team after winning the World Series in 1997? They traded all the stars that they couldn't afford to pay for prospects and were heavily criticized. So what were the results of those heavily criticized trades anyway, and how did Florida fare?

Florida traded such stars as Gary Sheffield, Moises Alou, Al Leiter, Edgar Renteria, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Cliff Floyd, Kevin Brown, Livan Hernandez and Robb Nen. The total amount of world series won by teams these players were on after being traded by Florida?

None.

In fact, the only player that Florida traded that played on a World Series winner was Craig Counsell, who was with Arizona when they won.

In the meantime, while most of the prospects Florida traded for did not pan out, some of the players they acquired during this fire sale included Mike Lowell, Derrek Lee, Carl Pavano, A.J. Burnett and Braden Looper. This nucleus, combined with PROSPECTS (yes, I used the dreaded "P" word!) such as Josh Beckett (a number 2 overall pick, a direct result of Florida's plummet), Luis Castillo, Brad Penny, Alex Gonzalez, Miguel Cabrera along with prospects the Marlins traded FOR such as Juan Pierre and Dontrelle Willis and yes, a few judiciously added vets (Ivan Rodriguez, Ugeth Urbina, Juan Encarnacion and Jeff Conine) added up to a world series in 2003.

Unfortunately, Florida lacking the resources to retain their players is once again selling off their team. But, as in the late 90s, for top prospects.

It will be interesting to see if history repeats itself..........

Mets Sign Oliver To Minor League Deal
Dec 18, 2005 | 11:10AM | report this

According to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, the Mets have signed P Darren Oliver to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training...

...why do this omar? we might as well just sign P Anthony Young and P Rich Rodriguez while we are at it...

...oliver might be the worst pitcher in the history of major league baseball. if he wasn't a lefty, he would have been out of the league fifteen years ago...

Red Sox Shopping Arroyo, Clement
Dec 18, 2005 | 10:59AM | report this

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are shopping around Pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Matt Clement in search of an outfielder to replace CF Johnny Damon...

...if the sox can re-sign damon, i'd expect them to either leave arroyo in the pen or trade one of them for a first basemen...

...the sox are offering arroyo or clement to the mariners for OF Jeremy Reed and to the indians for OF Coco Crisp...
