Huskers start wrong QB?
Nov 10, 2007 | 2:55PM | report this

Could the issues facing Nebraska this past month be the fact that the wrong man was in the pocket?

The numbers don't lie. Joe Ganz has really been that good. This stand out performance by Ganz begs the question, should Callahan have started him rather than Sam?

The Husker offense is looking much improved statistically, and is far more productive on the field with Ganz under center. Not only does he look comfortable in the leadership role, but the team seems to be responding better. No matter what argument you bring to the table, Joe Ganz has made it clear that this Husker team is his.

Congratulations Joe, the Husker seniors, and the Husker team for a big win this week. Kansas State has some good players and a good coaching staff. I expect they will bounce back pretty quick.

I'll repeat it once again.
1) Betting it all on a senior transfer was dumb.
2) A Big XII North QB must be mobil. Ganz always has been.
3) The verbal recruits may bail, yet they'll see the team is still chucking the rock.

At least Stolich had the courage to sideline Newcombe when it was clear that Crouch was the true QB. Too bad Callico (no offense to cats with the same name) didn't have the guts to do the same with Keller.
This is a team that COULD HAVE been 10-2 or 11-1. And, realizing your mistake much too late won't save your job Callico, and neither will running up the score. TO wouldn't have done that, even if his job was on the line.

Hasn't it been obvious for several years that Cally
can't evaluate talent? All you have to do is to look at the D Coord. and that pretty much says it all. Let's get rid of him and most of the staff, and the west coast and put in the spread. Then players will know if you can run it, it will be ran, if you can pass and catch it, it will be thrown!! Wasn't NU made with a lot of players other schools didn't go after anyway???!!!!

I keep hearing the same thing over and over. Accountability is the word everyone is looking. It started with Peterson, he did a very bad job. He was looking for change and made it to soon. Lets stop thinking what the season could have been with Ganz at the helm. Remember Keller did get us to 4-1. Callahan was doing what he thought was best at the time. Matching the QB with the plan he had for the season. For next year Callahan knows what he can do with Ganz when he is named The Field General during the summer. Lets just get a new D Cordinator and get back real football on the field not in office.

It certainly looks like Ganz is the better QB. As to whether Nebraska would have a better record if he had been the QB all season, we can only speculate.

As for Cally and staff, I believe they will be gone shortly after the end of the season. None to soon.

I said in my blog, and I'll comment here as well (hope you don't mind)...even if Callahan did start Keller, I believe Ganz should have had more playing time. Perhapse if he'd put him in when we started getting behind the outcomes may have been different

Callahan and Peterson are arrogant, it's as simple as that. They were college buddies with Keller's dad. Keller got to start and came here because he fed Bill's ego. Ganz didn't. Ganz is a leader, a motivator, and a smart kid. The rest of this team team never played like that for Keller. Ganz got them up. He led them. Keller may have the arm, but he doesn't have the know how. He can't remember anything, he doesn't check off like Ganz does. As for the Keller leading us to 4-1, what? We killed Nevada, barely beat Wake, lost by 18 to USC(and it wasn't that close), escaped Ball St., and actually looked good against Iowa St.. He didn't take us to 4-1, we somehow got there. It could just as easily been 3-2 or 2-3. Ganz was the right guy, Callahan didn't care.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Not only is Callahan overrated when it comes to schemes, player motivation, cultivating talent, public relations, and nurturing his players, he is also a terrible judge of talent. We sure got a winner with this one.
