More Drivers Than Seats?
Jul 27, 2007 | 8:12PM | report this

There are more drivers these days than there are seats. Sterling Marlin and Joe Nemechek are out of rides as their old owner, Ginn, had to sell his company to DEI. Is it me or are Owners losing money due to poor talented drivers or just the lack of seats available for the team?

I know a lot of drivers in the Bush Series are fighting with others for a seat in the Nextel-Sprint Cup. The numbers of owners are starting to dwindle, due to the fact of sponsor and driver pressure. The question is can an owner survive in the bigs without a talented driver or good sponsor or equipment?

There is no other major sport in the world where there are so few spots available at the very top level: 43 get on the track on Sunday. That's it.

That's less than one NFL roster, two MLB rosters and three NBA rosters.

On top of that, you've got a major crisis in terms of sponsorship. $15-$25 million a year is the price tag right now -- and it's going up. There just aren't that many companies with the resources and desire to put that kind of money in.

In the case of Ginn, the problem wasn't Marlin or Nemacheck. They didn't have full season sponsorships. That resulted in them not getting the resources they needed to make them competitive.

"The question is can an owner survive in the bigs without a talented driver or good sponsor or equipment?"

The easy answer is No.

Ginn fell prey to the oldest adage in Motorsports: How do you make a small fortune in racing? Start with a big one.

Yep: Economics and the bottom line dictates who stays in racing.

Ginn wanted Mark Martin so bad that he expanded to three teams without sponsorship for the third team and made a big mistake. That is what cost Joe.

Then Ginn decided to let Sterling go in a youth movement to go with Regan Smith. I didn't like it. But I can't necessarily blame him.

That was followed by Regan losing his ride in the Ginn merger with DEI. Karma is a ####.

Ginn lost money because he grew to fast. Looking back he might have been better off letting Joe go last off season.

Only the strongest owners will survive and personally I think that is good for the sport. I want to see all teams be top teams. Who needs field fillers?

Yes but Ginn needed help. I did notice in his pre race interview he was not smiling and not a extremely happy man as one would exspect to see. The word is 120 to 130 employees between to two organization will loose their jobs, what a pity! I can see some DEI folks may be going to JR MOTOR SPORTS, say did you see the new merger today...HMS BUSH TEAM and JR MOTOR SPORTS? WOW what a combo!!!!!!!!
