Well, the first 3 weeks of the college football season are over with. I
think it's time for a blog. This will be solely about the SEC. However,
I will mention other teams outside of the SEC. Before I begin, I feel
it's worth mentioning that as of today, there are five SEC teams in the
AP top ten. That's half! Impressed? If not, you should be. Don't worry,
I'll mention that there are three Big 12 teams, too. Now, I will review
ALL twelve teams, in alphabetical order.
Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0) Alabama
started this season with the usual high expectations, despite losing
most of their big play makers from a season ago. However, they started
out by destroying the ninth ranked Clemson Tigers. As you can imagine,
the Alabama faithful had plenty to talk about after that game and
rightfully so. I still don't get why it was at a neutral site, though.
Why not play a home-away series? Anyway, after this big win, their
focus turned to the Tulane Green Wave (Anyone catch that the Crimson
Tide was playing the Green Wave? Isn't that hilarious?). Only winning
20-6, the game was a lot closer than the score indicates. Alabama had
two special teams TDs. Not one offensive or defensive TD. Had the
special teams not been a factor, Tulane could have won this game.
Perhaps they were still high on the Clemson win. After a poor showing
in the Tulane game, they get the FCS power, Western Kentucky. As
expected, they obliterate the Hilltoppers, 41-7. This gives Alabama a
3-0 record to start the season. Sound familiar?
Arkansas Razorbacks (2-0) Probably
one of the worst 2-0 teams in the country (Sorry Arkansas). Seriously
though, you almost got upset by Western Illinois and Louisiana-Monroe.
Well, you're 2-0 now, but look at their next four games: Alabama at
home, at Texas, Florida at home, and at Auburn. They'll be 2-4 after
that brutal month-long stretch. Explain how that offense is so
high-powered, yet only managed to beat Western Illinois by 4 and
LA-Monroe by 1? Not much to say about Arkansas, right now. I haven't
seen a bad loss or a good win, yet.
Auburn Tigers (3-0) To
be fair, Auburn could be the worst 3-0 team in the country. I don't
really believe that to be because their defense is nasty. They've only
allowed three third-down conversions in three games. The offense is as
inconsistent as an offense can be. I guess it's true what they say.
"Defense wins championships." However, this team needs to actually win
one to prove the theory. I think they're capable to do that, if their
offense can get some consistency. The first game showed the offensive
problems, but it was the first game. After the second game against a
very good, underrated Southern Mississippi team, many Auburn fans were
sold that it was just a first-game thing. However, their brutal 3-2 win
at Mississippi State proved otherwise. They have LSU and Tennessee
coming to Auburn in the next two weeks. They need that offense to win
those two games. The defense will definitely keep them close enough to
win.
Florida Gators (2-0) Florida
is being led by the Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow. Enough said. Tim
Tebow is that good. They man-handled Hawaii and beat an underrated
Miami (FL) team. Like all big teams, though, they're taking an off-week
RIGHT before a big game (that irritates me). They head to Tennessee,
but the rest of their schedule, other than Georgia and LSU, looks to be
easy. There is no Auburn or Alabama. They have Florida State, but that
team has certainly dropped off in recent years. However, Florida's
defense is proving to be better than first believed. This is
particularly dangerous because their offense is stacked. However,
despite Florida being so good, they lost big games last year with the
Heisman Trophy winner. If they can beat Tennessee, that will set the
tone for how they do against LSU and Georgia. You can't say they're
good against the run or pass yet because they've yet to play a team
like Georgia, both good running the ball and passing it. One more
thing: Tebow has one more year left!
Georgia Bulldogs (3-0) Once
again, the level of SEC teams playing each other is insane. Georgia is
seen dominating Georgia Southern and Central Michigan, but only pulls
out a 7-point win at South Carolina (A team that lost to Vanderbilt).
Georgia's Matt Stafford is a legitimate Heisman candidate, as well as
his teammate, Knowshon Moreno. However, they'll be tested in another
conference as they take on Arizona State at Sun Devil Stadium. If they
run away with this game, it'll further tell everyone how tough SEC play
is when they face other SEC teams. I think Georgia runs away with this
game, too. Arizona State was upset by UNLV this past week. After
Arizona State, though, they have Alabama and Tennessee visiting. They
have a brutal 6-week stretch. Vanderbilt stuck in the middle, may be a
trap game. After Vandy, they get to go to LSU and have Florida in
Jacksonville. Ouch!
Kentucky Wildcats (3-0) An
easy first four games can be to blame for Kentucky being off to a great
start. Actually, they have one of the easiest schedules in the SEC, but
that means nothing. After they take on Western Kentucky, they get to go
to Tuscaloosa and take on the Crimson Tide. Honestly, this team has a
good chance of going 7-5 this year. All of the big games are spread
out. That allows them to prepare for them better. I don't think it will
help much, but it may a little. Maybe they pull of an upset somewhere
in there. They looked pretty good against Louisville, but a bit off
against Middle Tennessee (they are FBS, trust me). The Alabama game
will be where I can judge them better. If they can keep up with
Alabama, they could have a nice season.
LSU Tigers (2-0) I
haven't really learned anything about LSU, yet. The Troy game was
postponed and they played FCS Appalachian State and Sun Belt North
Texas. You can't take those two games and make a clear judgment of how
they will do against Auburn this coming week. With that said, this
upcoming game against Auburn, I think will go Auburn's way because
there are a lot of uncertainties about the new LSU team. They haven't
faced a defense like this. This series usually goes back and forth
anyway, so it's Auburn's turn to win. Like Kentucky, all of their big
games are seperated by a weaker team in the prior week. This could help
them or hurt the momentum from a win. Each game could be considered a
trap game. There are a lot of things that could go wrong. I think the
Troy game being postponed was a good thing for LSU. This gives them an
extra week to prepare for this nasty Auburn defense.
Mississippi Rebels (2-1) Ole
Miss is a team to watch out for. Their only loss is to a very talented
Wake Forest team on the rise. They could have won that game, too. They
have quite a few big games to look forward to, but all, but one is
away. They host Auburn while visiting Florida, Alabama, and LSU. With
these first three games, their defense hasn't been that great, but
their offense has looked pretty good. However, the SEC play will bring
out the best in them. Don't ask me why it's like that. It just is. They
may have a better QB than has been advertised at Jevan Snead, the Texas
transfer. However, he's never faced SEC competition and I think he'll
struggle at first against Vanderbilt. After that, he should be fine.
Maybe not great, but he'll do ok. They'll need him to be great, though.
Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-2) Watching
the game against Auburn, you'd never think that this team was now 1-2,
with the other loss against Louisiana Tech. However, they are and that
offense was worse than Auburn's. Trust me, that says a lot. I'm not
sure if Mississippi State's defense was just that good or if it was
because they were playing Auburn's offense. In any case, this should
give that defense confidence when they head to Atlanta to play Georgia
Tech. After playing a defense like Auburn, their offense should come
away with something. Now that they've played one of the best defenses,
perhaps they'll feel able to perform against everyone else. After that,
they head to LSU. Yet another brutal schedule for an SEC team.
Mississippi State performs well against the SEC, as of late. They may
end up with a 6-6 record, but they'll earn every win they have.
South Carolina Gamecocks (1-2) This
team opened the season with North Carolina State and then went on to
face Vanderbilt in their house, as well as Georgia at home. The two
losses are against Vandy and Georgia, but they held their own in both
games, losing by 7 each time. South Carolina's defense has been praised
and rightfully so, despite the two losses. They've only allowed an
average of 95 passing yards in three games. As I said before, one of
those games was against Georgia. With Wofford and UAB next, they should
get two wins and a better look at what they should be doing to win more
games. I know Spurrier is furious right now, but late in the season
they should have figured it out and win a big game, like Clemson to
close maybe. Don't worry Gamecocks, things will get better.
Tennessee Volunteers (1-1) Tennessee
started out the year playing UCLA. They threw the game away in the
second quarter by missing two late field goals. I'll give you that UCLA
played brilliantly against them in the second half, but Tennessee gave
that game away. It sucks, but that's the way it goes. Tennessee's
defense has only allowed 68.5 rushing yards in two games. I won't be
totally sold on their defense until they get done with Florida and
Auburn in the next few weeks. Then again, playing good defense against
Auburn may be inevitable. I'll also salute Tennessee for not scheduling
one FCS team on their schedule. However, you can't call UAB and Wyoming
good competition. I think every SEC team should be scheduling FBS teams
only, but sometimes their schedule is so tough that they need an easy
win. I'm sorry, but it's true.
Vanderbilt Commodores (3-0) Seriously,
Vanderbilt is 3-0. The three wins were no cake walk either. They beat
Miami (OH), South Carolina, and Rice. They won't be undefeated for
long, but they could potentially be a 7-win team! Vanderbilt, a 7-win
team! Yeah, I said it. The private school of the SEC. They're off to a
great start and their confidence will be more than ever against the top
of the SEC. They get Auburn on the 4th of October. Georgia follows two
weeks later. With Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Duke in between,
they can win three of those five easily. Vanderbilt will be going
bowling this year. I really believe that a 6-win season is the worse
they can do, now. All they really need to work on is passing the ball
and stopping the pass. If they can do that, seven wins is easy. If they
pull of an upset, they can win eight.
