Musical Blogs...why?
May 25, 2008 | 1:55PM | report this
There are several bloggers who I regularly have give-and-take with here on FOX Sports. I think for the most part we write for each other's company since nobody at FOX seems to be paying any attention to us and I have'nt seen any inkling of another contest coming up anytime soon.

Nevertheless, we write and we write and we write, and we argue some, then we shout at each other, call each other morons and the cycle continues. Regardless, it gives those of us who actually enjoy writing and working on our craft an audience no matter how small and irrelevant.

I personally, love the blogging community. I think it's information exchange at it's finest and in several years as major news network anchors become more and more obsolete, people will simply choose which blogger they believe more and that is where they'll get their information from.

I have about 15 blogs and several podcast across the net under different names and subject matter. I'm like the blogging version of Prince (or rather the artist formerly known as Prince).

Lately, however, I see an increase in the number of people who have music on their blogs, a concept which I do not understand at all.

My personal favorite musicians or groups, in no particular order are, Kurt Cobain, The Aforementioned Artist who goes by different names, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jodeci, KRS ONE and yes the Allman Brothers. In fact, "Midnight Rider" barely lost out to
Redman's "I'll Be Dat" as my personal theme song (see 'I'm Gonna Get You ####a'). And yes all of those artists are in the MP3's of the Caddy and the Range right now.

Many of you probably do not like all if not any of those artists for all I know. So I will not burden you with having to endure my personal favorites when I'm priveledged (sic) enough to have you stop by my blog to pay attention to what I'm thinking at any given moment.

We meet up here for sports talk, this isn't MySpace!

So what gives with all of the musical pages. There are several things to consider when you decide to blast us with your musical faves on your sports blog:

#1. What if your reader happens to be at work or at home late at night while his/her family is sleeping and all of the sudden we click to your page and ...Mama don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys!!!!
What if your boss, who is in the office next door, actually likes Cowboys?
What if my wife doesn't like country music disturbing her sleep?
What if that's the song me and my ex broke up to?

Can you see the hysteria you may be causing?

#2. What if I pull into my driveway and my wife and daughter are on the front porch with a little bird they found in the front yard, and you spend the next hour online trying to figure out exactly what kind of bird it is and playing various bird sounds to see if you can get a reaction out of the bird when I shift gears, go to FOX Sports, click your blog and I get...Music makes you lose control!!!!

I guess I might be too old school for many of today's younger bloggers, judging by my musical tastes, that's probably a safe assumption, still, if you want me to hear your tracks, just give me a hyperlink to your MySpace or Facebook page and I will happily check them out.

As for the sports blogs, unless it's a vintage Cossell - Ali verbal sparring session, a classic Harry Carey or Billy Crystal 'take me out to the ballgame' rendition, or a hilarious Mike Tyson ear or children eating montage don't you think that we could find our own way to hot tunes?

Just my opinion.

Curly...I was thinking the same thing. Amen on this. I love music, but it can destroy my attention span when reading a blog. I can't read and and listen to music at the same time. Maybe it's just me, but my brain goes nuts. My compromise is to have the playlist available for people to listen to, but don't have it automatically start playing when you click on their blog.

A few days ago, my hubby was on his cell phone and I clicked on a blog and got blasted with music....hubby was ticked...it was a business call.

The other thing is the comments with photos. While some are relevant to the blog, most of them are huge and blow-up the blog and unfortunately, some of them play havoc with my programs. If you want to post a picture, great, but cut it down to size so it doesn't blow up the blog page. (Someone posted a hilarious animated pic of the Lakers on my blog, and that's why I am glad I got to see it!)

good post, and hey, I read your every post!

I LOVE me some Roots.

And generally the sounds emanating from the musical blogs are drowned out by the voices inside my head.

I don't like country music disturbing me ever, let alone the Cowboys.

You're right, music belongs on myspace not this space.

Again, priveleged to have you stop by! I see I'm not the only one aggravated by them. Don't let Nique Dodson hear you say that though!

Rev:

How did I know you were a Roots fan?! :)

I use Last.fm to share my music. It'll load automatically with most music programs (like iTunes), I believe, and it logs what you've been listening to recently and what you like to listen to most of the time. Additionally, you can compare your musical tastes with your friends, and you can share it by using widgets.

Here is my page.

I haven't encountered any blogs that have music automatically playing, so maybe I'm just lucky in that respect.

I have music on my blog for my enjoyment when I am writing not anyones elses. If that was the case I would have written a blog asking everyone what would they like for me to put on it. I am able to do it so why shouldn't I?

So it's as simple as this. If you go to someones blog here and they have music on it then you can

1. Pause the music player. Seems like a simple enough task to me.
2.Turn your spakers down. Why would you have your speakers loud late at night or at work? This also seems like a very simple thing to accomplish.
3. Just never go to that blog again. Personaly I have no problem with anyone not reading what I write because they either do not like the music I have or they do not care to here music while reading my blog.

It's my blog so it's my choice to have music or not as well as what's on it.

Hope this helps you out if not I suggest you find a "What to do if people have music on their sports blog for dummies."

whine, sniffle, "my husband was on a business call and I clicked on a blog and music started up" oh boo hoo. Why didn't you turn down your speakers before he started his call in the first place. This isn't your private blog Lisa and the rest of us have a right to do something fun around here whether you approve of it or not. you may be able to get people blocked so you're always at the top of the board even when someone else has more comments but nobody died and made you god. BOOO HOOO. I heard you were married to Dusty anyhow.

Nique,
LMAO! Wait I thought everyone thought you was Dusty? Boy thisDusty person isn't even around and I bet his ears are just ringing like crazy. LMFAO!

This is sad people, I mean c'mon of all the things to complain about this is all you can come up with.I mean if someone I normaly read or commented back and forth with decided to put a pic of himself in drag with a plunger stuck up his rearend as his avatar I wouldn't complain. I'd simply just excuse myself from their blog permanently. There is a simple solution to almost everything.

Well Curley? I appears you and Lisa are just about the only whiners on this blog so offended by music.

Again...I could care less what you or gambitxxx have to say. The music on a SPORTS blog is Bush-League (pun intended)and has no place on a Sports Blog.
Of course FOX won't say anything, if they were truly concerned about screening our blogs then perpetually menstrual people like Nique Dodson would've been banned some time ago.
If anything, I'm sure our little rants serve as nothing more that entertainment fodder for the REAL writers at FOX (who by the way don't bother us with THEIR musical selections).

That's why there is MySpace and Facebook. Not only does your lack of better judgement show by deciding that people who want to read about SPORTS would be interested by what music you like, but it also displays the fact that you don't enough quality writing material to speak of, so you fill the void with asinine musical selections as if you were attempting to garner some comraderie with other bloggers.

That goes for you too gambitxxx and for that matter anyone who has the ludicrous notion of putting music players on a SPORTS blog. What's the matter? Can't get any hits on your MySpace page?

Although I don't really like them, my blog was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. But since I see that Nique has rounded up the 'attack Curly' posse to justify 'kiddy noise time' on SPORTS blogs, then I will happily expose you and your musical savants with this simple premise.

There are over a million places on the internet where I can choose to listen to music, why would I be interested to listening to music on your SPORTS blog? (Oh I'm not finished...)

Next you knuckleheads will be offering up your latest fashion or pet care tips!

So for all of you who feel the need to combine Willie Randolph with Willie Nelson, just light up a few incense and sing kumbaya to each other, while sharing Billy Ray Cyrus jock strap hugging tales...but most of all..MOST of all...write something worth reading!

I own a recording studio and I will happily charge you a discounted fee of $45 per hour to stop by and live out your American Idol fantasies. Then at least least you can have something ORIGINAL on your blog instead of rehashing tunes from your glory days as a Disco Savant.

It seems to me you aren't getting enough hits to please yourself that you had to blog about this. Then to top it off you posted it three seperate times with three different tags. LMFAO! You might want to think befor you type. Geez your dumber than a box of rocks dude!
