I've never made a secret of my NFL allegiance, (but then again I don't make secrets of much of anything). For almost 35 years now, I have been a Pittsburgh Steeler fan. The first ten years were incredible and the second decade was like watching a team of underpowered posers struggle to catch lightining in a bottle a second time. The last fifteen years though, have been nothing short of excruciating. So much so, that the SB XL win inspired relief more than joy. The curse of the "team of the century" had finally been broken.
So forgive me for not shedding tears over the rumored/impending retirement of William Laird Cowher. Becuase as much as I was a fan of the man they called the Emepror, Chuck Noll, I am not a fan of Cowher. I'm still amazed although it was as far back as 1992 that the Steelers would change the face of the franchise from an intellectual, almost erudite , student of the game, in Noll, to the model of the missing link in Cowher. True the franchise needed a shot, but this was hardly tanatmount to hiring a disciple of a legend (Paul Brown), it was more like picking the fruit off of the choker (Schottenheimer) tree.
I will give Cowher credit for hiring experienced assistants like Capers, LeBeau, Erhardt and April both to disguise his obvious inadequacies and to let him do what he did best, cheerleading. Those decisions, along with inheriting all the talent from Noll's talent laden last few drafts had Cowher primed for early success. That's why in 1996, the Steelers backed into the Super Bowl they should have been playing in 1995. But Cowher sealed the stamp he pressed gently on the franchise the year prior, with a SB XXX loss.
But somehow in defeat, Cowher managed to stay true to himself and believe that if he just kept throwing the same silly junk on the field year in and year out, he'd get the job done. A mere decade later, his philosophy paid off. A mere year after that, he fielded the most undisciplined, underperforming Steelers squad I have ever seen, ensuring that the Steelers would not even have a chance to defend that fifth trophy.
Not that I blame Cowher, he's been generously rewarded for every postseason failure, every personnel miscue, and every idiotic game plan or lack thereof. Given the opportunity to tease the fans for a season and then fold up in January, for a few million a year, I'd take the gig too. But now, having been shoved in a sack and carried on the back of his young QB to a SB Trophy, Cowher really believes he's an elite coach and should be even more ridicuoulsy overpaid than he is already.
That's why I think that Cowher's decision has already been made for him. I harken back to new Steelers President Art Rooney Jr. telling the media that it was "about time for another SB win" last preseason. I've long had a feeling that Art (the younger) has a very realistic view of what Cowher is and what he is not, a good but not a great coach. Unlike Dan Rooney, I don't think is enamored of the Coach who peaked a decade ago and is just as likely to give you a losing campaign as a winner.
My intuition is that Art Jr. will be making Cowher's announcement for him if Cowher dilly-dallies too long after today's meaningless season ender. I'm sure the Steelers will comply by whatever idiotic (Rooney (as in Dan) Plan) interview requirements exist, but I'd wager that they already have a successor chosen. Ironically, it was the same spirit that made Dan the NFL Goodwill ambassador that kept Cowher around as long as he stayed. But now that there's a new Rooney in town, I'm hoping he'll be less concerned with the letters PR and more concerned with the letters SB.
Because the Steeler FO, if it wants to win SB's, needs to face facts about the team that Bill and Dan built. Aside from the no-brainers of drafting Roethlisberger and Polamalu and a few winners in Alan Faneca and Aaron Smith, the team is talent thin at many positions. The offense is so predictable that color-men are diagnosing the play calls and the "confusing" Zone Blitz schemes that the Steelers D-employs only seems to confuse the occasional rookie QB. The scheme peaked last week when QB Steve McNair, playing on grass, didn't even have to send his jersey to the cleaners after the game.
But Cowher will have the chance to dust off his tired, know-nothing cliches at least one more time after the game. I wish he'd call it quits right then and there, but more likely he spew more of the same clueless defiance we've been hearing for years now. But what we see on the field is more telling than any gobbledygook spilling out of Cowher's mouth, these days.
It's time for the legend in his own mind to move along. I can hardly wait.
I'm not sure who I want, but it doesn't matter because I don't get a vote. If I had to pick from the insiders, I'd take Russ Grimm. I think he'd cut half the team in February.
And spell check is tantamount to laziness. So I made a typo, shoot me.
Hey CR, why not move to either Cincy or better yet, Cleveland. So they had a bad year, so..... The team has made strides to correct what had gone wrong all season and won 7 of their last 9 (including todays). They need some tweaking, especially at cornerback, need to shore upthe offensive line some, but all in all they ain't bad.
Good ridens I'am glad you steelers are out of
the play off and your next 10 years the will be a bunch of losers. Next year the steelers will go
2-14 after the steelers must of brought off
all the officails last years and stoled the
super bowl. Won't do that agian so hey steelers
stay in your poor for sorry state and stay out
of were people are honest and true your state just
is fithy.
i'll do you one better than you offer... substance. this is all empty prose. i appreciate the sentiment, just offer a little proof. this reads like cowher kicked your dog and you just aint never got over it. i dont like him either. but without examples or proof of his incompetence, this is all meaningless rhetoric. all people outside Pitt know is thus: he own a superbowl. why whine about it?
Why not just keep living in denial? Cowher is a Schotty seed, his best years (the years when we got our #### made into hats in the AFCC) are well behind him.
I loved Chuck Noll, but you have to admit he stayed long after he had lost his edge. I think that being an NFL HC has a shelf life and it's around a decade at best.
As for turning on Cowher . . . . I can't "turn" on a guy I never respected. I would only be happier if he had quit years ago.
Well BenStarkey; I disagree greatly with CR, though I never warmed to Cowher his record speaks for its self. Too bad whoever you are a fan of has struggled. I don't know, but Cowher is a great motivator and has picked all the right Asst Coaches over the years. We Steeler fans can argue amongst ourselves, but that is us-you can stay out of the equation. CR is one who will expect nothing but the best from our Steelers. This year was an aberration, nuff said!
You can't compare Noll and Cowher anyway, really. It's a whole different game now. The Steelers of the 70s were built over time and stayed together, for the most part, until their run was over. That's simply not possible in today's NFL.
First off, how can you call it a failure when Cowher a failure when he took the team to 2 Superbowls and 5 AFC championship games. I am 17 years old, and i became a die hard fan when i was six. At least he has done more than some coaches like Mike Tice whoes had the building blocks at Minnesota but has done nothing with. He has taken players like Willie Parker and given them a chance when some teams haven't. Cowher has done alot for the Steelers orginization, and granted you cant replace a guy like Noll, you just have to have faith in Cowher
I was never "happy" with Koach Koacher. Anyone who follows the Steelers knows that Roethlisberger not only willed them above Koacher's Koaching, but even made the season saving tackle when Billy's hand picked stumblebum tried to choke the Indy game away.
No, I can't compare Noll and Cowher. That would be like comparing Mike Chick to Tom Brady. I can compare Belichick to Noll, though.
Which brings me to my next point. If the game is so different now, how did the Pats win 3 SB's in 4 years.
Which brings me to my next point. Caoching is still about putting the best players on the field, having the best game plans, the best execution and the best adjustments.
That's how Cowher differs from Noll. It's not about timing.
start doing some damn reaserch CR. out of 15 seasons, he only had 3 seasons under .500. so know what your talking about before you start rambling about "more losing seasons than winning seasons"

Christopher Ross ..... If Cowher should decide to leave Pittsburgh and move south to be closer to his kids.
Then what better place to put down roots professionally than in Atlanta.
Afterall the Falcons are in need of a coach and the travel wouldn't be that disadvantageous.
I'm sure that Arthur Blank would take good care of him on that score !
If that is, Cowher would be interested in the job ?
Blank would be more than willing to pay him what he's looking for after having to deal with that imbecile Mora !
What are your thoughts on that ?
Christopher Ross., ....... God no ! You can't possibly want Cowher in Clevelend ? That's like sending him to an NFL wasteland. He'd be far better off in Atlanta and at least his time there would certainly be more pleasurable than being in Cleveland !
Romeo Crennel does have that team going in the right direction. The problem is though, that they're still learning what it's about to be sucessful and winning.
It's not something that's conducive to the organisation's personna !
For the past couple of years it's been nothing but failure but slowly under Crennel's leadership they're beginning to learn.
But remember this, it's still an experiment in the making and it'll be another year or so before we see anything tangible from the franchise !
So for the time being let's appreciate what he's doing for the moment !
He went into that situation with hands practically tied behind his back. Whatever he achieves now is far better than anything the franchise could possibly wish for ! They've got the nucleus o####ood young team that's slowly beginning to learn to play together.

Christopher R ..... Just heard also on my local CBS affiliate that Cowher has decided to step down from his position as coach of the Steelers. More likely than not it'll either be confirmed or followed up on by ESPN.
One way or another they always want to be at the forefront of a major sport's news story. It's their way and that's what they want to be known for.
Christopher R ... Where do you think the Rooney's will go in search of a new coach ? Hire from within or go outside their comfort zone and hire an experienced coach ? Whoever takes over will certainly have a legacy to fullfil whatever one's opinion of Cowher might've been.
It's a tough call. My intuition says they will either pick Grimm or Whisenhunt. But their past history points to going outside.
Cowher acted as though he would influence the decision, which if it was true would point to Whisenhunt. If the FO values pedigree though, they'd go with Grimm and his 3 SB rings.
I don't think they'll go outside to a college coach because of the failures of Davis, Spurrier, Saban, etc.
I don't know how many truly great assistants are out there either. Maybe Ron Rivera. But I tend to think they'll promote from within, this time.
Christopher Ross .... Ron Rivera or eiter of the two between Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt would be great candiidates. I'd even go so far as to throw in the name of Steve Mariucci that's if you get past the inherent problems that he had in Detroit.
Which obviously weren't of his making. As he had to deal with the meddlesome interferrence of GM Matt Millen in all of his policy making and player personnel decisions on and off the field.
Put that aside and you've got another great and knowledgeable candidate.

I'd normally lean more toward Rivera, because this team is sorely in need of discipline and leadership. I love Mooch as a personality, but he seemed unable to control a team.
In the end, I usually think OL's are the best choice, which leads me back to Grimm.
Christopher R ...... I sincerely hope you're right on that score. Rivera or Grimm would be ideal candidates for the position.
The Rooneys will want nothing more than continuity as it best reperesents and helps the fanchise from the beginning ! I do believe that other than my beloved Patriots they're one the best run franschises in the NFL without a doubt !
I'm so looking forward to next weekend's playoff games within the AFC as each ahs the makings of being a real barn burner ! Colts vs. Ravens and Chargers vs. Pats. What more could an NFL fan ask for ? Simply nothin' !
Christopher R ..... If you're up for some fun then check out my most recent post entitled 'And These Little Ditties Would Definately Have Me Stay At Home .' If you like your super models 'hot' then it's the post for you ! Look forward to reading your comments !

Christopher Ross, ..... Last night's game between the Buckeyes and Gators was about as comprehensive an #### whuppin' as I've ever seen in my life ! I don't know what happened to the Buckeyes but I can bet that Tressel was embarrassed by it all ? As his team didn't seem to turn up to play !
Urban Meyer had that Gator team ready to rock n' roll and so they did beating up on the Buckeyes.
