Below are the second five predictions for 10 interesting games of week one. If you have not seen the first five, look here. Week One Predictions: Part 1
6. Bama vs. Clemson
If this game was played during the middle of the season it might be a bit better… MIGHT be. With the youth of Bama defense, the Clemson running game will be hard to stop if the offensive line that features only one returning starter can gel during summer camp. The defense will be beast lead by the line backing corps. Running and short hook zone passes should be fairly non-existent. The Tide young players will gain tons of experience from the early season road game that may transfer to a surprising road victory later in the season(@ Tenn or LSU). You should expect to hear the Clemson band playing Tiger Rag all day long!
Tigers 42 – Tide 17
7. Missouri vs. Illinois
Mizzou is on a mission to avenge the BCS slight from last year and the first in the buzz saw is Illinois. This is another great out of conference match up of teams that blasted on to the scene in 2007. Both look to put the kibosh on the sophomore jinx. Heisman hopeful Chase Daniels leads an explosive offense that will have the score board pinging like a pin ball machine. Conversely, the defense will be nastastic (nasty and fantastic). Juice is going to be sweet this year, but with the lack of a serious early season running treat, the weight will be on his shoulders to produce often. Against the Tigers, he is not enough.
Tigers 44 – Illinois 21
8. Tennessee vs. UCLA
Call me crazy, but for some reason I have always viewed Tennessee as a team of more hype than substance. Very little has changed my opinion of the 2008 edition of the Vols. Much like Clemson in the ACC, the Vols never seem to fail to lay an egg or two during the season. Can you say Bama 2007?
Don’t expect a repeat of last years season opening loss to a PAC-10 opponent, as UCLA has several issues. An uncertain situation at QB and a reconstructed secondary will make it difficult for the Bruins to contend.
Vols 31 – Bruins 14
9. Fresno State vs. Rutgers
Round and round the wheel goes, where is stops nobody knows. That has been the motto for the WAC over the last few years. 2006 was Boise State. 2007 it was Hawaii. This year it is Fresno State that are the conference darlings and BCS expectations fall squarely on the shoulders of the Dawgs. Offense has never been an issue in the WAC and this year the Bulldogs could soar to new heights. Their major issue is defense. This should not be a problem as Rutgers attempts to re-establish it offense after losing several key pieces, to include all world RB Ray Rice. With the experience the Scarlet Knights have in the secondary, they should be able to hang with the Fresno passing game initially, but the second half will be troublesome and that is when the Dawgs prevail.
Bulldogs 27 – Scarlet Knights 24
10. Wake Forest vs. Baylor
Wake opens the season Thursday night in Waco playing in front of a National audience. The Deacs will use this as a spring board for a season that has the potential to be magical. The defense should have little trouble with an Baylor offense that will still be attempting to obtain an identity. Baylor LBs will give Wakes running games fits to start with as they plug holes but as the night wears on Josh Adams will find more space to roam free.
It is not so much lack of faith in UCLA as it is in Rick. I was in Colorado Springs when he was with the Buffs and then I was in Tacoma when he was at Washington. I've seen first hand what he can do to negitively effect a program. I'm just saying...If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it might be a duck.
My name is Larry. I'm a 38 year old military officer currently stationed at Fort Leavenworth, KS. I'm a sports enthusiast, and former college football player (go Deacs!).
