Henry14 - 1 Bobby what do you learn about United's attack today (Sunday), and l remember you talking about how Samuel Eto'o is probably the most valuable player in the planet because he is so difficult to replace and we saw how it affected Barca, using your same argument do you feel than Tevez and Rooney will complement that well in against deep defending teams and good solid teams with good defenders?
2 Bobby what did you make of the three promoted teams and their performance and especially Birmingham? l thought they look better than people think of them
3 Can you help me about how Wenger is 13/2 to get fired and do you think martin Jol will be at spurs next season if they do not win a trophy or break into the top four?

Bobby 1. Rooney and Tevez will work fine together when the chance presents itself and they get a few games together under their belts. Even if they don't it is a gamble well worth taking.
2. If a newly promoted team stinks in the first couple of games then they generally have no chance of staying up. This is particularly true at home. Even then there are a good number of examples of promoted teams that flew out of the blocks only to be relegated.
3. My error – should have read 13/1. It was corrected in last week’s blog response and in the preview.
4. I don’t know I haven’t seen your TV. He might be big boned.
5. He’s really more of a wingback than a full back – the heir to Cafu (although Maicon looks pretty good as well).

Ohphuque – I’m surprised more folks aren’t in for the Portuguese fullback Miguel; he seems perfect for the EPL. I didn’t see much of Valencia last term so I don’t know how his club season went, maybe atleti can fill us in, but he looked a real menace at the World Cup. How do you rate this player?

Bobby – Excellent player and he had an excellent Euro 2004 when he replaced Ferreira.

Venti_vidi_vici - 1. What to you make of the incredible number of foreigners in the EPL this season? At last count there were 330 from 66 different countries; 50 more than last season, and for the first time ever they outnumber their English counterparts. In the inaugural EPL season in 1992 there were a total of 11 foreigners in the league. Arsenal has 22 foreigners and 2 locals; Liverpool's ratio is 18 and 5. This without mentioning that all the major managers and owners are also foreign.

2. What is the British Government trying to do about this? What can they do and why are they considering intervening? Is this because they fear that this is a short term phenomenon which could leave the English game in ruins, or are they just trying to help the national team?

Bobby – 1. The EPL is caught in their own marketing hype. To match what they claim about being the best league in the world the teams are “forced” to buy foreign players – mostly because they are better than the home-bred variety – and foreign clubs know that EPL teams will overpay. Having said that the league is infinitely better than it was 15 years ago. It will come at a price and the price is performances at the international level. If you go back and read about the formation of the EPL one of aims was to improve performances at the international level. The FA got sucked in on that one!
2. The government is limited to granting or not granting work permits to foreign players. You have to differentiate between players with an European Union passport (that entitles them to sign and play for any UK team) and non EU passport holders such as South Americans and Americans. Because of EU rules concerning freedom of movement for workers the “foreign player” numbers are somewhat distorted. What you really need in numbers by English players, other UK, other EU and foreign players. In addition any government that starts to stick a nose too deeply into the affairs of a national association runs the real risk of FIFA withdrawing sanction for the teams to participate in club and international competition.

Bigdavedisaster - I believe you said last year that you believed Berbatov was the transfer that made the biggest impact. Who will it be this year? Along the same lines who will be the bust?

Bobby – I will go for Malouda as the player to make the biggest impact and Roque Santa Cruz as one of the biggest busts. Santa Cruz’s goals coring in Germany has averaged around a goal every five games (in a league in which more goals are scored than the EPL) and I don’t see Bayern Munich selling a 25-year-old striker who looks to have all the tools if they didn’t have good reason to doubt his consistency.

Usa2010 - What really stuck out in the first round of the EPL was the value o####ood GK. While we all know that a good GK is invaluable, it was painfully obvious when you look at the Man Utd/Reading game and the Chelsea/Birm game. Put average keepers in goal for Reading and Birm, and Man Utd wins easily and Birm ties, or even wins. Also, with all the goal keeping woes at Man Utd, why don't you think SAF never looked at Friedel a few years back? I was always surprised his name was never mentioned. The guy is consistent in goal at a very, very high level.

Bobby – I’m assuming you mean when he signed Van der Sar. As for why SAF didn’t go after him – I have no idea.

Neophyte - I hope you read all the way down here. I have a question for you. Of the American goalkeepers in the EPL, who do you rate #1, 2 and 3? Do you think Chris Seitz (the US U-20 keeper) will get his turn to keep for a European club anytime soon?

Is there another midfielder from England as skilled as Gerrard in your opinion? (I officially don't like Liverpool but I will watch them play anytime Stevie G is playing. That free kick was incredible)

Bobby – GK Friedel, Howard, Hahnemann. Goalkeepers mature a lot later than outfield players so I don’t think there is any rush to get to Europe. He would be just as well getting experience and playing time – waiting a few years doesn’t seem to have hurt the other US keepers.
If you are meaning an English midfielder rather than a midfielder playing in England then I would have to say that nobody can match Gerrard in my opinion.

George11Best - What is your take on Cagliari and Mallorca?

Bobby – Nice places to visit? As far as their fooball teams are concerned - the upside is mid table with a relegation fight in their respective leagues a possibility.

Henry 14 - 1.what do you feel about Senderos because l thought Drogba apart from goal did not do much to trouble the defense. Do you think the criticism handed to a 21 year old against a 28 year old is justified?

2.l have seen Chelsea and everyone’s seems to be waiting for them to fire on all cylinders and produce a performance that merits the stars in their team. Do you think Chelsea have reached their peak expected of them or they have but Man Utd. have just been too good for the champions to live with them?

3. What do you make of Abou Diaby?

4. Have you seen a better piece of magic or dribble than Ronaldhino did against Bilbao?

Bobby – 1. Senderos is an experienced international even though he is 21. Drogba’s primary job is to score goals and if he achieves that without “troubling the defense” then more power to him. Drogba has definetly got into Senderos' head.
2. I think Chelsea has an extra gear that they have still to use.
3. He looked good last year until he was injured against Sunderland.
4. Yes – Ronaldinho didn’t score. Here are a few of my favourites courtesy of youtube. There was also a Ronaldo goal when he was with Barcelona but I could not track I down.

Gongatore - .How do you see the Barca-Liverpool return leg? Who does Barca start?
Tactically, what can they do to negate a fired up Scouser side at home?

Henry14 - As l sat to see the Barcelona match and saw Eto'o play more like his old self, l felt that, Barca at their best are the best on the planet, what approach do you think Liverpool will take because they are expected to attack at the same time Barca will have to attack?

Gunner44 - Do you think now that Eto’o is back Barca will be able to overcome Liverpool at home?

Bobby – Barcelona has to win by two goals or by a score of 3-2 or higher so they have to attack. Benitez will be happy to sit back and hit on the counter – there seems to be no reason to attack. The longer it goes on without a goal then obviously the better it is for Liverpool. If Liverpool scores a goal Barcelona still needs to score two to stay alive.

Wja425 - Javier Mascherano already has more playing time at Liverpool than he had at West Ham after September. And by all accounts, he performed well on Saturday. Is that a commentary on Pardew and Curbishley as managers that they couldn't fit him into their systems (there was an article suggesting that recently), or that Mascherano fits Benitez's style much better? It doesn't make a lot of sense that a player can not make the squad for one of the worst teams in the EPL but can play a critical role for one of the best teams.

Bobby – I think Benitez knows how to fit Mascherano into his team and I still think that he will come good and will turn out to be a great acquisition for Liverpool. In terms o####ood player not being able to hold down a place in a poor team I’m not sure it is as simple as that. It can be a case of the type and style of players you are playing with as well. After all do you think it is easier playing with good players or bad players?

Buffytvs - Ronaldo has been a huge part of the team's success this year -- do you think he will move on at the end of the year, as the rumour mill suggests?

Bobby – I cannot see Ronaldo moving from Old Trafford anytime soon. I think it is all part of the better-contract dance.

Gunner44 - Who do you think will win EPL player of the year Drogba or Ronaldo? Or will it come down to who wins the Title? And in your own opinion who has been more valuable to his team?

And do you think Cesc should be EPL Young POY coz in I think the boy deserves it considering how consistently he has performed all year been only 19?

What do you think Henry's Problem is confidence, new players around him, starting to lose his touch or just lost in his own little world? And should Wenger Bench him especially if RVP returns?

Bobby – I would pick Drogba at the moment as the player of the year because he carried Chelsea through a large part of the season. Fabregas is a shoe-in for the young player of the year. I don’t think Wenger will bench Henry. As for his problems – missing Robert Pires perhaps. Rosicky has had a good first season but Wenger is playing him in a position that he rarely if ever played while with Borussia Dortmund. Pires and Henry had a telepathic understanding – it is not the same with Rosicky.

Foxcube - I feel that Arsenal had no choice but to go with youth development, the Ajax way, whereas Chelsea remains absent-minded with huge money in the pocket. What about Man Utd in the 80s and 90s? Were they considerably richer than other clubs? How did they cultivate their own reserves? And why isn't AC Milan's system producing any great players?

Bobby – United may have been richer than other clubs but the youth squad they produced in the early 90’s was probably as good as any with the exception of the Busby Babes. United have always produced players through the youth system but few are up to SAF’s standards. (Colin Shindler’ s book George Best and 21 others is a great read, as well as Jeff Connor’s The Lost Babes). The lower leagues are littered with players who have not made it at Old Trafford.

Good question about AC Milan. They have always been regarded as a buying club rather than a club that develops players. The two that I think did come through the ranks and were world class players were Gianni Rivera and Paolo Maldini.

LosAngelesChelseaFan - Do you think the article on the Porto meeting between Abramovich and the fans in the Sun has credibility or is just their normal way of creating sensation?

Bobby – A way to create a stir.

Henry 14 - Do you know where Glen Little was and why he is at Reading when he has so much talent?

Bobby – I believe he spent a bit of time at Burnley and may have been at Crystal Palace at the start of his career when Steve Coppell was in charge. You don’t find too many tall rangy type wingers around anymore. He reminds me a bit of Chris Waddle, Ted McMinn (Rangers and Derby in the 80’s) and Tommy Hutchinson of Manchester City and Coventry in the 70’s and early 80’s.

Old Coach - What current managers do you consider to be the best talent evaluators?

Bobby - I think most of us would go for the usual suspects in England - SAF, Arsene Wenger - particularly Wenger. Sam Allardyce would have to be part of that group as well - even though many don't find Bolton's style entertaining.

However, I think the managers who really have to work their socks of to make sure that they leave no stone unturned are the Championship managers. George Burley has a great track record of team building at the lower level and Billy Davies at Derby is another one. Roy Keane has done a great job so far of moving players in and out and now has Sunderland in a position to challenge for an automatic promotion spot.

I think you also have to dig a bit deeper as well and look at the clubs that have developed a system that continually attracts good young players. I'm thinking of a club like Sevilla who have lost some very good players but they seem to find a way to replace them. Werder Bremen would be a good example of the same thing in Germany.  Auxerre did it for years when Guy Roux was in charge.

Mr. Red Devil - What do you think of those yellow kits that Liverpool wore yesterday while getting soundly beaten by Man Utd? Those have to be worse than Bolton's away kit.

Bobby – I am not a particular fan of the yellow Liverpool kits but they are still better than the Bolton away set. I was surprised to find out on Friday that certain members of the FSWR office actually like the Bolton kit and I was taken to task for my comments.

Bmax 14 - It seems to be common where good teams cannot duplicate good league form in the CL or vice-versa. Is this an accurate statement, and if so, has it been this way for a long time?

Bobby – I wrote a column on this just before the Champions League Final in May. As you can see it has never been particularly easy to compete at the top level in Europe and domestically. The article focused on any differences between the old European Cup format and the relatively new Champions League version.

Excerpt - “There is also a long tradition of teams doing well in Europe but not doing the business in domestic competition. If we assume the European Cup format to have run for 36 seasons and the Champions League for 14 seasons it is difficult to make a case that there has been much difference in the number of “surprises” or an increase in the number of poor home performers. Over 50 competitions the European Champion has also won their domestic league 19 times in the same season. The break down is14 times under the EC format and 5 times under CL. A percentage comparison 38% to 36% is a miniscule difference. At the other end of the spectrum the three worst domestic performances by a European Champion all came under the EC format. Aston Villa finished 11th in the English First Division when they won the European Cup in 1982; Bayern Munich 10th in the Bundesliga in 1975; and Juventus 6th in 1985”.

MeanSucka - On Barca: you've highlighted, as well as others, that the loss of Eto'o is bigger than realized and it is more than clear after losses to Chelsea and Real Madrid. What I want to know is whether Saviola can look for more time and why Lilian Thuram was in the starting lineup? Also - Would Gudjohnsson be more appropriate as a striker/midfielder to bring on when the team is ahead? He seems very allergic to taking scoring chances when they present themselves.

Bobby – Rijkaard has never been a big fan of Saviola – either that or he has been trying to hide it by loaning him out the last two seasons – but I think he will have to use him. He is far closer to the Eto’o style of play than Eidur Gudjohnsen. Gudjohnsen is a very gifted player but he is at his best playing behind the striker and he doesn’t have the kind of pace of finishing touch that Barcelona has become used to. He is a bit like Hernan Crespo (not the quickest player) so he is forced to play right on the shoulder of the last defender in an attempt to get any advantage possible. Unfortunately – unlike Crespo – he is not the most clinical of finishers.

Wickedzoot - I was su####ious when I saw David James on your list again. I thought it was a typo (obviously didn't read last week). But wow this guy's the real deal. That was one fine article he wrote. Too bad he got so hard done against Chelsea. I thought he was brilliant. Does he have a chance to regain his England spot or is that bridge well and truly burned?

TheIdiot - I noticed you’re putting David James in the list of top GKs in the Prem - on current form, I must agree. Do you think he deserves an England recall? Or with his long record of gaffes, does he need to show a longer run of continued mistake-free keeping?

Bobby – McClaren will stick by Robinson unless he goes down injured. If that happens and James maintains his current form then James will get another chance. The media will forget how they hammered James over the years – many of the times justifiably so – and will call for his recall on a wave of nostalgia induced emotion. 

USAenglandfan - 3 questions, two somewhat off topic:
(1) Do you see Daniel Carvalho breaking into the first team in Brazil within the next year or two? (2) What players' jerseys/kits do you own, if any? (3) What is your favorite ever kit, aesthetically?

Bobby – (1) I cannot say I have seen too much of Carvalho but from what I have seen he is an impressive young player. Dunga sent a very clear message when he picked his first squad that he is ready to look at younger players and that they do not have to necessarily be playing in one of the top leagues. I could see Carvalho moving to Italy or Spain for a very large fee in the next 18 months. (2) I started collecting jerseys from Mexican teams while on holiday so I have 4 or 5 in the cupboard. I also have a jersey from Tayport the last team I played for in Scotland. It was a “special” when they made it to the Scottish Junior Cup final a couple of years ago. The first jersey I have received was a v-necked Dundee top in the early 60’s (same style as the Man Utd one this season) followed by the crew neck a couple of years later. I got a Chelsea top after Charlie Cooke moved from Dundee to Chelsea in the mid sixties. Since then I can remember an assortment of Scotland, QPR (Guinness), and Liverpool tops. (3) Real Madrid – all white from the 50’s.

Gongatore - In your mind, who do you think is the best choice for USMNT gaffer?

Bobby – I still think Klinsmann would be a great choice.

AlexMorph - Of the 30 short listed names for the Ballon D'Or, who would be your pick for the overall year?

Bobby – I think it is Thierry Henry’s year. He made it to the Champions League and World Cup Final and scored goals domestically. Samuel Eto’o is definitely worthy of consideration as is Fabio Cannavaro (who should have won the Golden Shoe). 

Neophyte - the term "gaffer" what are its origins and when should one use it and when should you avoid it. Do you call the manager "gaffer" to his face or is it a term you should only use when out of his presence etc...?

Bobby – The term “gaffer” comes from the factory floor and building site. It is the term for a front-line supervisor – the proper title would be “foreman”. There is nothing derogatory about the term unless you place a commonly used adjective beginning in “f” before it. 

bigdavedisaster - Here’s a great old video about the Old Firm. Gives a little bit of insight into where the rivalry comes from and into football in Glasgow. What a difference 30 or so years makes and doesn’t make. If you have time to watch it I’d love to know what you were up to then and what kind of a hair style you had. A snap shot of 1974

Bobby – That video brought back some bad memories!! In 1974 I was in College in Dundee and probably enjoying myself far too much. I was playing for a local team called Barnhill – with many of the mates I grew up with – so we trained, played, drank and did almost everything together. I also played in a Sunday morning league for the Dundee Press Club – they allowed me to play centre forward!!! – and sometimes on Sunday afternoon in another league. Training was Tuesday and Thursday while on Wednesdays I played for the College team. No one thought about rotation or rest back then – the pitches from October to March were mud heaps or skating rinks and we all loved it.
As for hair it was long and a headband was mandatory when playing – although they were just plain white in those days unlike Ronaldinho’s current effort that makes him look like a big girl’s blouse!

MeanSucka - How about the reports of Becks being out in January or Rijkaard trying to sell Deco to get Lampard?

Bobby – Having said for the last two years that Beckham will play out his career in MLS I think a compromise will be reached and he will eventually sign for another year for Real - that way both parties will save face. It is interesting that Beckham quotes and stories seem to have escalated in the last couple of weeks – a sure sign that he is trying to put pressure on Real Madrid. As for selling Deco to get Lampard – I don’t put a lot of credence in that one.

Mr. Red Devil - BigDave, I watched that Rangers-Celtic video. Very interesting.
Bobby, do you know of any good books that offer a neutral point of view on the history of Celtic & Rangers?

Bobby – I haven’t read the book myself but there was a book a few years back by Bill Murray that looked at both clubs - at what seperates them and what unites them (something many people forget - there is a reason they are called the Old Firm after all). Murray wrote a book about the global reach and history that I read and enjoyed, so I think his Old Firm book might be worth picking up.

Henry14 - l have been reading stories of huge losses in fans at club in the epl even f the price of tickets at some places like Blackburn is as low as 15 pounds, the only teams that have had an increase in fans to their ground are United and Arsenal, inevitably two clubs that play attacking and beautiful football, do you feel it is too big a task for clubs to try attacking football, l know you might need young quicker players and technically good but l feel it will affect the spending of these clubs in the long run like for instance Liverpool spend $60m during the summer hoping to cover it with gate earning , with the exception of Chelsea what do you see will be the solution if the stadiums are to be full again.

Bobby – “Falling attendance” has been a recurring story at the start of the last few Premiership seasons. Go back to the fall of 2004 and 2005 and you will find the same stories. I don’t agree that United and Arsenal have increased attendance because of the quality of their football this season – even though it has been attractive. The bottom line is that they have bigger stadiums and are reaping the reward of being popular, entertaining and most importantly successful over the last decade or so. There was a pent-up demand going into this season and we increased capacity you are seeing the results in an increase in the attendance for both clubs.
