Portugal and Mexico both move on...
Jun 21, 2006 | 9:06AM | report this

Mexico dominated large parts of the second half. It was a great build-up to the first Mexico penalty kick but was Bravo trying to do.

Perez paid the price for his embellishment – instead of a second penalty, it was a second yellow card. My take was that if Perez had bounced up he would have escaped a second yellow card. However, because he stayed down for an extended time it was enough to convince the referee that it was an attempt to con him. Thoughts?

Despite suffering their first loss in eleven group games Mexico makes it to the last 16 again – that makes it five times in their last five appearances.

Now we will have to wait to see who Mexico and Portugal will play in the next round.

After a rapid internet search here is how they stack up.

Portugal vs. Netherlands             5 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws. Unbeaten against Netherlands in  the last six meetings.

Portugal vs. Argentina                1 win, 4 losses, 1 draw. Have only scored 2 goals in last five games against Argentina.

Mexico vs. Netherlands              2 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw. In the four games there has been 16 goals.

Mexico vs. Argentina                 1 win, 3 losses, 1 draw. Mexico has only scored three goals.

Mexico 0-0 Angola
Jun 16, 2006 | 1:59PM | report this

Angola played for 90 minutes with passion and agression.

Mexico controlled the majority of the game but they were let down by sloppy passing.

Bravo and Franco did not lead the line effectively in the way that Borgetti does.

Only Mexican fans could begrudge Angola a first ever point at the World Cup Finals.

Man of the Match - Joao Ricardo controlled his penalty area and pulled off a couple of excellent saves.

Day 3 thoughts...
Jun 11, 2006 | 9:51PM | report this

It was a bad day for….

Serbia and Montenegro a side that rarely looked capable of getting a goal after going 1-0 down to the Netherlands.

Iranian goalkeeper Mirzapour and centre back Rezaei who teamed up to gift Mexico a go-ahead goal that turned out to be the winner.

Angola’s 2005 player of the year Jamba who saw Luis Figo breeze passed him to set up Pauleta for the only game of the game after only four minutes.

FIFA – the British investigative program Panorama turned their attention to bribery allegations involving the bankrupt company ISL and “payments” allegedly made to officials of soccer’s world governing body over a period of 20 years.

It was a good day for….

Arjen Robben whose pace and running caused the Serbian and Montenegrin defense no end of problems.

Mexico’s Coach Ricardo Lavople – his double half time substitution paid off - eventually.

Mexican striker Omar Bravo who notched two in typical goal poaching style.

And the most overstated fact of the day...

USA plays their first game tomorrow.

Mexico open their account...

Iran conceed an unnecessary free kick about seven yards from the cornner flag. Pardo takes it, Franco finds himself in more space than Captain Kirk and flicks the ball towards the goal where Bravo is Omar on the spot and nudges it home.

We have just seen a TV shot from Mexico City and it safe to say that the crowd is reasonably happy with the goal.

Six minutes later and this one is tied up. A corner is horribly misplayed by the Oswaldo Sanchez and defender Golmohammadi scores only his 4th international goal after prodding home a loose ball.

Nether defense is looking terribly comfortable and unless they settle down we could have a few goals here.
