Fulham’s win over Arsenal was no fluke. The Cottagers played high quality football and totally outplayed Arsenal in the midfield.
Stoke City took the lead twice against Aston Villa only to be pegged back each time. But they persevered and got a stoppage time winner from Mamady Sidibe in their first top flight game at home since 1985.
It may not have been pretty but that should not overshadow the fact that the USA got off to a great start to the semi-final round of World Cup qualifying with their first ever competitive win in Guatemala.
The New York Red Bulls are hitting their stride at the right time. A 3-0 win over Houston means that the Red Bulls are now unbeaten at home in their last six home games and have scored nine goals in their last three. Considering that the Houston Dynamo had been rattling up wins and goals the last few weeks it was an impressive outing for the Bulls.
Best forgotten…..
A little over two years ago Chelsea paid Milan a king’s ransom for the services of Andriy Shevchenko. To that point in his career Shevchenko has scored at a rate better than a goal every two games and although he scored on his debut for Chelsea only eight more goals were to follow over the next two seasons. It would be considered a poor return on a striker that cost $6M let alone $60M and no matter which way you look it the move failed miserably. The lesson – no transfer comes with a guarantee of success.
For most nations a bronze medal at the Olympic Games is more than a satisfactory return. But for Brazil’s men's soccer team and the fans back home it is nothing less than abject failure. Brazil has been become overly fixated on winning a men’s soccer gold at the Olympics – the one title that has eluded them over the years. Silver medals in 84 and 88 were followed by a bronze in Atlanta. This time it was another bronze and should Brazil stumble in their next World Cup qualifying match away to Chile in just under two weeks time it will be a coup de grace for coach Carlos Dunga.
Best goals…. There were a slew to choose from this week and here are my picks in no particular order.
Chad Barrett’s equalizer for Toronto against New England Revolution was his 7th goal of the season. It was a thunderous left foot strike that flew past the Revolution’s Doug Warren.
Liverpool’s winner against Boro might also be categorized as crime of the week. Nonetheless Steven Gerrard’s shot right on full time was not only beautifully struck but it was a clutch goal for the home side.
A very cute header from Hull’s Richard Garcia gave the away side a share of the points against Blackburn.
Jakub Blaszczykowski (Kuba to the fans and commentators) sent a swerving right footed drive from the edge of the penalty area into the roof of the Bayern Munich net for Borussia Dortmund.
Goal feast……
Not only goals galore but a few reds as well as Real Madrid beat Valencia 4-2 in the Spanish Super Cup second leg and took the trophy 6-5 on aggregate. When you consider that Real was down 4-2 on aggregate and down to 10-men by half time it was a remarkable result. But remarkable was to become extraordinary.
Ruud van Nistelrooy narrowed the gap to a single goal from the penalty spot only five minutes after the restart but then did his side no favours when he was sent off with 16 minutes to go. Playing nine against eleven and a goal down with a quarter of an hour left Real Madrid then stunned Valencia with three goals before Morientes scored a consolation goal for Valencia.
Sergio Ramos and substitutes Reuben de la Red (another red for Real Madrid?) and Higuaín all scored. It was all amazing stuff and a shot in the arm for Real Madrid who starts their title defense away to Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday. Valencia is at home to Mallorca.
Best Howlers…… A badly misplayed corner by Pat Onstad gifted Jamaica an equalizer in midweek World Cup qualifying against Canada. Onstad who is normally so reliable for Houston punched an Andy Williams corner into his own net shortly after Julian de Guzman has given Canada a one goal lead.
Best Players…. The Fulham midfield of Davies, Bullard, Murphy and Gera was outstanding in Fulham’s 1-0 win over Arsenal.
Elano may have scored twice for Manchester City against West Ham United but it was Stephen Ireland that set both goals up. Ireland was irrepressible in midfield for City as they chalked up a much needed win.
Stat facts Middlesbrough last won at Anfield was on March 6, 1976 with goals from John Hickton and Terry Cooper. Since then Liverpool has won 19 and drawn 6 against Boro at home.
Michael Owen’s headed goal against Bolton was his 19th Premiership goal for Newcastle. Of the nineteen, nine have now come from his head. This is quite a contrast to Owen’s record of only seven headers out of 118 goals during his time with Liverpool in the Premiership.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce might want to be really clear about kick off time when his charges play at Hull next Saturday. In their two games so far Wigan has conceded three goals and they have all come in the first ten minutes.

A mess that will get worse before it gets better.
Mark your day-timer – November 25 is the draw for the rest of the World Cup qualifying groups.
After international action it is back to domestic competition and there are some cracking games in prospect. Scotland has the first Old Firm derby of the year with what has become normal – an early kick off time. Celtic is struggling with a number of their players – in particular full backs – on the hobble.
Gordon Strachan will likely have to play someone out of position at right back and at the moment former Hibs defender – and normally a centre back – Gary Caldwell appears to be favourite to fill the hole. Caldwell is just returning from injury and so Walter Smith might be looking to pick on Caldwell in the early going.
Celtic’s defense has not travelled well for some time and you have to go back to October 1 of last season (at Falkirk) to find the last time that Celtic maintained a clean sheet away from Parkhead in a SPL match. As far as goals are concerned the responsibility is likely to fall to Aussie Scott McDonald who has five SPL goals already as well as the winner against Milan. McDonald was signed from Motherwell in the summer after scoring 41 SPL goals in the previous three seasons.
Rangers US international DaMarcus Beasley picked up an ankle knock against Switzerland in midweek and is a doubtful starter. Rangers won the final two confrontations of last season 2-0 and 1-0 and with home advantage they are likely to be the bookies favourites.
Villarreal has beaten Barcelona four of the last five times that the Catalan side has visited El Madrigal on league business. They get a chance to extend that fine record this weekend but they can also expect to face a rampant Barcelona side. Barcelona are looking for a fifth consecutive win in La Liga and a seventh straight in all competitions. Lionel Messi has been on target in all the wins and he currently leads all scorers with six goals. Giuseppe Rossi with five goals in seven games has settled in beautifully at Villarreal but after picking up an injury while on duty with Italy’s under-21 side he will miss this one.
Even though Roma (one win in three) and Napoli (two losses) have suffered some setbacks in the last few weeks their match in Serie A is still one that stands out. Francesco Totti notched goals 156 and 157 in a 3-0 win at Parma two weeks ago. That puts him 14th in the Serie A all-time scorers list and just one behind the legendary Luigi Riva and Roberto Mancini.
Napoli’s record away to Roma is poor with only 8 wins in 60 visits but the rivalry is intense. So intense that the game will be restricted to season ticket holders only. Roberto Sosa of Napoli got himself involved in a bit of training field punch-up this week but it is unlikely to affect his starting spot on the bench. It is role that he has proved very effective in to date with three goals from four substitute appearances.
MLS regular season concludes this weekend with some things settled (Chivas, Houston, Dallas, DC United, NER and NYRB in the play offs; Toronto, RSL, the Crew out of the play offs) and much still to be decided (final positions at the top of the western conference with Chivas hosting Houston; the final two play-off positions).
At the time of writing David Beckham has been ruled fit to for the match against the Red Bulls but he has started the match on the bench – in other words he has been ruled fit to sit on the bench but not fit enough to start a game! It sounds as if the Galaxy has not learned a lesson from the first go round of his he fit to play or not. (At the time of posting it is 1-1 at half time).
Avoiding defeat against the Red Bulls will mean that the final game between the Galaxy and the Chicago Fire will help decide who will grab the last two play-off spots. Kansas City (away to Dallas) and Colorado (at home to rivals Rea Salt Lake) are also very much in contention and there are a good number of possible permutations. The best idea is to go the MLS website and I am sure that the possibilities will be laid out for all to see.
And finally to the Premiership. We started with a look at the Old Firm derby in Scotland and the first Merseyside derby of the season also goes this weekend. Liverpool lost this fixture last season 3-0 in a game that consisted of a catalogue of errors for them.
Andy Johnson grabbed a pair last season and Australian Tim Cahill chipped in with a single. The midfielder has yet to make an appearance this season for Everton and his 22 goals in 83 appearances have been missed. Cahill is back training after reinjuring his foot in the pre-season and could make the squad. However, if he is to appear it will almost certainly be off the bench.
Despite last season’s set back and the fact that Liverpool failed to score against Everton last season the red side of Merseyside has a very good record at Goodison having lost only three times on their last 12 Premiership visits. One “record” might last the day. Both clubs enter the game having collected the lowest number of yellow cards in the Premiership to date – Everton (8) and Liverpool (10). The last two Merseyside derbies have been relatively tame with only seven yellow cards handed out. In the four prior derbies there were 23 yellows and five cards.
Bolton arrives at Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal. Archie Knox has been handed temporary control after Sammy Lee left by mutual agreement (“mutual agreement?” you are fired –OK). Conventional wisdom has it that Bolton are a bogey side for Arsenal. However, Bolton have never been beaten Arsenal in a home Premier League fixture. Old boy Nicolas Anelka certainly enjoys scoring against Arsenal in the Premiership but his goals have not produced much in the way of wins.
Anelka – who is doubtful for the match – has scored six times in 8 appearances against Arsenal but only finished on the winning side once. Another game was drawn and the other six lost.
Manchester United and Aston Villa are both looking to extend impressive league streaks. Villa have won their last four home games in the Premiership while United have won six straight all without conceding a goal. But Manchester United is the last team Villa wants to face considering their record against them.
For starters Villa have lost 21 times to Manchester United in the Premier League and that is more than to any other club. United have won their last nine Premiership matches against Villa and they have kept the Midlands club off the score sheet on the last five occasions. It gets worse. In their last 11 Premiership visits to Villa Park United have won 8, drawn three, scored 15 and conceded only two.
Stop Press - The European Union has agreed on a treaty that includes an exemption for sport in relation to the general economic principles under which the EU operates. It does not go as far as Sepp Blatter wanted - "autonomy" - but it accepts the "specific nature of sport."
This is going to become very important in years to come and is a major blow to the G14 clubs. It leaves to door open for FIFA/UEFA to sit down with European bureaucrats and politicians and to suggest solutions to problems facing soccer in Europe without being limited to conformance with the economic rules of the EU.
In theory, it could even lead to salary caps - I stress in theory. The EU has not given up their power to ultimately regulate sport but there is an acknowledgement that sport is different than business and that solutions, rules and regulations that run counter to their general economic rules, might be applicable and helpful to sport.
FIFA/UEFA, after finally wakening up to the EU reality, has managed to catch G14 offside and the G14 has now been largely isolated. Up to now the EU rulings have generally been favourable to the big clubs; that is now going to change.
Except some G14 bluster but this might be their swansong. In will take a few years for this to fully play out but in years to come we will be refering to the treaty in the same may that we refer to the Bosman ruling.

Carlos Bilardo is not impressed with the quality of the play or the tactics in the Premiership. There again England has never been in love with the doctor.
Last weekend while Arsenal were putting five goals past Derby County, Liverpool were forced to settle for a scoreless draw with their Premiership bogey team Birmingham. This weekend Arsenal faces what could be considered their bete noire – West Ham United. As well as beating Manchester United twice last season, the Hammers also did the double over Arsenal – and didn’t concede a goal in the four games. A fantastic accomplishment for a team that only avoided the drop on the last day of the season.
In fact West Ham are looking for a fourth straight Premiership win over the Gunners having won 3-2 on their final trip to Highbury in February 2006. The other game that season between these two London rivals was a scoreless draw so Arsenal fans’ memories need to stretch back to January 2003 for the last time their favourites took three points off of West Ham.
Back then Thierry Henry notched a hat trick. Last weekend a hat trick from Emmanuel Adebayor claimed the first hat trick to be scored at Emirates Stadium and took his season tally to six in the Premiership. Arsenal will be hoping that the Togo international can strike again given that the Gunners have never lost in the 18 games in which Adebayor has scored.
While West Ham’s summer signing of Craig Bellamy (the only British player to have been transferred for $10M or more on five occasions – good or bad, discuss) has been the usual centre of attention it could be argued that the return of a fit Dean Ashton will prove to be of greater value to the Hammers. The now bottle-blonde Ashton (trying to become the first footballer to improve his game after dyeing his hair!) has scored in the last two Premiership games as well as scoring a very late winner in the Carling Cup in midweek.
A continuation of the scoring streak and Steve McClaren will find it difficult not to pick the former Norwich and Crewe striker for vital European Championship qualifying games in October. Three former Arsenal players will be in the West Ham squad - goalkeeper Richard Wright, Matthew Upson and Freddie Ljungberg. Former Charlton, Chelsea and Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker may finally make his Premiership debut for the Hammers.
Liverpool’s improvement away from home can be gauged by comparing their record on the road this season with their visit to Wigan last December. Liverpool thumped Wigan 4-0 but that was their first away win of the season and it came at the eighth time of trying. It also took their goals scored away from Anfield to five after being shut-out for 6 straight away games.
This season Liverpool have already won two away games, drawn the other and they have still let in a goal from open play this season. Since Wigan arrived in the Premiership Liverpool hold a perfect Premier League record with four wins from four matches, 10 goals scored and none against.
After leaving Fernando Torres out of the starting line up for the last two games (don’t mention rotation to Liverpool fans, I did once but I think I got away with it!) and then being held scoreless it is hard to see how Rafa Benitez cannot start the Spaniard on Saturday.
As for Wigan there is a sense that after two wins in their first three games their record of two losses and two draws in the last four games is a fairer reflection of their overall quality. However, Wigan are a team that manages to get on the scoreboard – albeit in the second half. They have only been shut out once this season but seven of their eights goals have come after a cup of tea and a pep talk.
Chelsea might have cruised to an easy midweek win over Hull City in the Carling Cup but the first priority has to be to stop the Premiership bleeding that has seen the Blues drop to their lowest league position in five seasons. Chelsea have only three wins in last 12 Prem games stretching back to last season and are currently without a goal in 329 minutes – their longest streak in nearly a decade.
We are so used to hearing that the first goal is so important in a game – and it is – but it has been a curse in Fulham games this season. The side scoring first in a Fulham league game this season has yet to win and on five occasions it has been the Cottagers. Conversely Chelsea has gone behind five times but still recovered to pick up seven points.
The dilemma for Avram Grant is how to come good on his commitment of playing attractive football when the platform for success comes from a strong defense – something that Chelsea has failed to deliver on this season. In seven games this season Chelsea has conceded 8 goals. That’s not a lot for a normal team but in the first 7 games last season they recorded 4 goals against and 4 shut outs - the season before it was 1 goal and 6 shut outs.
This weekend in MLS we may have a preview of a first round play off game in store. If the Chicago Fire can maintain a hold on 5th in the east and stay ahead of the western conference Colorado Rapids then there is a very good chance that they will “cross-over” and run into Chivas come the play-offs.
Chivas are now guaranteed place in the final eight and are also unbeaten in their last eight games. Their next challenge is to catch DC United in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. They are three points behind but with a game still in hand.
Chivas’ home record has been outstanding so far with ten wins and no losses in 12 games and they have only trailed at home in one game this season – 2-0 to DC United but still rebounded to share the points. Ante Razov has been hot with 6 goals in the last 4 games but the Fire will be confident of dousing his streak.
Ten of Chicago’s 14 away points have come in the last 6 games; the other 7 away games only generated 4 points. What’s more Chicago are also unbeaten in their last four games although three have been drawn. All things considered an excellent game in prospect.
In the Bundesliga it is the team currently sitting second – Bayer Leverkusen – trying to ensure that the four point gap on league leaders Bayern Munich does not grow larger this weekend. It also brings together the Bundesliga’s leading scorers from the last two seasons.
Miroslav Klose notched 24 goals two seasons ago for Werder Bremen but signed for Bayern Munich this summer. Around the same time the 2007 top marksman Theofanis Gekas moved from Bochum to Bayer Leverkusen. While most of the soccer world knows of Klose, Gekas is also a man with a nose for goals. He was the top scorer in Greece in 2005 and the runner up the following year before moving on loan to Bochum. He almost single handedly kept Bochum in the top flight while finishing as the Bundesliga’s top marksman in the 2006/07 season. This past summer a complex three deal that also involved Panathinaikos saw him land at Bayer Leverkusen.
So far this season Klose has got the jump on his Greek rival outscoring him 8 goals to 3. However, if Klose is to add to his total then he will have to do something that has not been done so far this season – score against Bayer at home. There again Bayern has averaged three goals a game away from home this season and this fixture has delivered 17 goals the last three times these sides have clashed in Leverkusen. I’m willing to bet that Bayer’s shut out streak is about to end.
Roma started a tough run of games last weekend with a draw against Juventus after leading 2-1 at half time. In midweek there was a reprise against Fiorentina. These two results combined with an Inter draw at Livorno and a win against Sampdoria means that Roma and Inter are now tied at the top of Serie A with 11 points from five games. Inter have not lost in their last five Serie A matches away to Roma although Roma can look back to a comprehensive Coppa Italia win last spring and a 1-0 Italian Super Cup win last month.
Totti was rested for Wednesday’s game but is almost certain to return for this table top clash. Totti was Europe’s leading marksman last season and has already scored 5 goals in his four games although he trails Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Inter who has two more – he’s tied at the top with David Trezeguet of Juventus.
After relinquishing their position at the top of the table for 24-hours to Villarreal (apparently their first time atop La Liga) Real Madrid leapfrogged three teams after beating Real Betis 2-0 on Thursday evening. Now manager Bernd Schuster returns to his old stomping ground where he will find his old charges in anything but fine fettle.
During his two years with Getafe, Schuster led them to consecutive ninth place league finishes and a Copa del Rey Final appearance last season.
His replacement Michael Ladrup – also a former Real Madrid and Barcelona player – has not got off to an au####ious start. Getafe is still winless after 5 games although they are undefeated at home with two draws. Getafe’s “success” during Schuster’s tenure – and his predecessor Quique Sánchez Flores - was very much built on performances at home. An illustration of that is the fact that Real Madrid has lost twice and drawn once at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez since Getafe were promoted for the 2004/05 season.
Toronto FC made in four wins in seven home games this season when they walloped FC Dallas 4-0. In a game of contrasting styles it was Toronto’s pressing and more direct play that triumphed over a Dallas side that looked to build slowly while maintaining possession.
In the early going Dallas had the better of the play but they were left to rue a couple of early missed chances when Toronto took control of the game half way through the first half.
The first goal came after excellent work from Kevin Goldthwaite on the left side as he crossed for Danny Dichio. Dichio’s two efforts were saved by Dario Sala before Edu stuck the loose ball away as it bobbled around in the six yard box.
Three minutes later a free kick swung into the penalty area by Carl Robinson from the right side led to a second Toronto goal. Dichio simply out-muscled the FC Dallas defense to head home.
Dichio failed to appear for the second half after injuring his ankle while FC Dallas brought on Ruiz and Nunez for McCarty and Thompson. While Dallas enjoyed most of the possession in the second half they failed to create many clear cut chances.
A Carl Robinson header from a wonderfully flighted Kevin Goldthwaite cross after twenty minutes of the second half put Toronto up by three goals and the game beyond doubt. The speedy Jeff Cunningham could have had a second half hat trick but each time his hesitation and indecision when granted lots of time proved costly.
As it was Cunningham did get on the score sheet when he headed home in injury time. Proof, if any is needed, that Cunningham prospers when he acts instinctively.
With all four goals coming from crosses, three of them leading to headed goals, Coach Steve Morrow – himself a former centre back – was be left in no doubt as to where the FC Dallas weakness lay.
As for Toronto they now face six games away from the friendly confines of BMO Field and do not return there for MLS action until July 29 and a date with the Chicago Fire.
Scouting notes Toronto FC has had Trinidad and Tobago forward Collin Samuel on trial this past week. While with Falkirk, Samuel was linked with a move to Everton of the Barclay’s Premiership. However, his form dipped and he was transfered to Dundee United (coincidentally a former team of Ronnie O'Brien). Ian McCall who had signed Samuel for Falkirk was the man responsible for taking him to Tannadice.
However, McCall was subsequently sacked. When Samuel’s contract was up for renewal at the end of this past season United offered him a less lucrative deal and Samuel opted to become a free-agent. A life-long Dundee United fan described Collin Samuel to me as an enigma (in Scotland that describes someone who once played well and everyone is waiting for it to happen again!) who on his day can be a world beater but who is wildly inconsistent.
Great speed but Samuel can suffer through stretches of games when he is completely anonymous. With Toronto FC due to lose players to the Canadian Under-20 side we will find out this week whether or not Coach Maurice Johnston offers Samuel a contract.
Matt Scott says that the Stevens’ Inquiry has produced evidence of financial irregularities in a number of player transfers.
After Jurgen Klinsmann opted to move on some expected the German rival to wither. Not so according to Raphael Honigstein.
We have a weekend menu of La Liga, MLS and Gold Cup. Real Madrid can win La Liga for the first time since 2003 this weekend but if you are a bettor then the odds apparently are not too good that it will come to pass. The Spanish paper Marca has had someone calculate the odds of Real securing their 30th Spanish title with one week to go and it is apparently less than 10%.
Real Madrid travels to play fifth place Real Zaragoza who are trying to make sure that they hold on to a UEFA Cup spot. Zaragoza has only lost twice at home this season although Real Madrid has already won 11 times away this season. That is three games more than the next best – Atletico Madrid – while league challengers Barcelona has four fewer wins and nine less points.
What is surprising is that Real Madrid and Barcelona share the same goals for and against when away from home. Both teams have scored 32 and conceded 20 but the Madrid side has obviously rung more points out of their efforts.
Barcelona is still unbeaten at home this season – the only Spanish side that can boast of such a record – and plays Espanyol at the Nou Camp in a derby match-up. Despite efforts to have Ronaldinho’s red card against Getafe rescinded it is unlikely to succeed. Espanyol’s 3-1 win over Barca earlier in the season was their first in ten matches and only their second in the last 15 derby clashes. With Espanyol sitting comfortably in mid-table they have little incentive to bring their best game – except that is, to screw up their bitter local rivals!
With talk of a Real Madrid league championship in the offing it easy to forget that Sevilla’s treble dream is still on alive. However, should Real Madrid and/or Barcelona win this weekend it will have to move to life support. Sevilla plays Mallorca who will finish the season at the Bernabeu next weekend. A run of four straight wins in April and May banished any relegations fears for Mallorca but the last two games have brought to 1-0 losses.
Fears that manager Juande Ramos might be seduced by big money offers from foreign clubs has meant that Sevilla has stepped up attempts to sweeten the pot and to tie Ramos down with a longer-term contract.
At the butt-end of the table Celta Vigo (away to Atletico Madrid) and Real Sociedad (home to Racing Santander) are both in need of divine intervention in order to stay in the top flight. Both sit on 33 points and trail Athletic Bilbao (away to Villarreal) and Real Betis (home to Osasuna) by four points. Celta Vigo and Sociedad both need nothing less than a win and even then they could still be demoted this weekend.
The Chicago Fire broke a horrible five-goal winless stretch when they beat Columbus by the odd goal in five the last time out. They hope to build a winning streak when Chivas comes calling. Former Lazio, River Plate and Juventus striker Marcelo Salas has been training with the Fire this week but no word yet of a contract offer let alone acceptance. Chivas arrives in Chicago with a poor away record of a single point in four games. A couple of weeks ago Chivas coach Preki was bemoaning the lack of scoring from the midfield. With the strike pairing of Razov and Galindo contributing three quarters of Chivas’ goals to date it is an imbalance that has not yet been rectified.
New York Red Bulls snuck out of Toronto on Wednesday with three points after a smash-and-grab win over the FC. Any debate of about which big signing will make the biggest impact seems pointless at the present given that Colombian Juan Pablo Angel has now scored six goals in his first five games for the Bulls – including both markers against Toronto FC.
The Red Bulls are in the middle of a stretch of game that has them playing six of seven on the road and on Saturday they visit Washington to play DC United. It will be a homecoming of sorts for the Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena who spent the formative years of MLS building DC United into its most successful team. His team will face a side that appears to have recovered from a tentative start to the season and are now unbeaten in five games.
Both Canada and the USA came through their opening games with wins while Mexico plays Cuba on Friday evening in their opening match. Mexico will have European based players such as Pavel Pardo, Ricardo Osorio and Carlos Salcido. However, Barcelona has been able to hold on to Rafa Márquez until the end of the Spanish season. Mexico plays Honduras on Sunday and with Cagliari’s David Suazo and Genoa’s Julio César León in the line-up Honduras could have worried Mexico. But neither player is in the Honduran squad.
On Wednesday evening Canada started the Gold Cup with one of their finest performances in some time. A second half double from Deportivo La Coruna’s Julian de Guzman (his first goals for Canada) helped to overcome Costa Rica 2-1.
On Saturday they play Guadeloupe, a French protectorate that is not a full FIFA member and therefore ineligible for the World Cup. Jocelyn Angloma, who played 37 times for France, may now be 41-years-old but he is still has some magic left. Angloma was a fantastic right back and played for the likes of PSG, Marseilles, Inter Milan and Valencia during his time in Europe. He played in three Champions League finals as well as the 1992 and 1996 European Championships. Now he has slotted into a midfield role for Guadeloupe who surprisingly drew 1-1 with Caribbean Champions Haiti in their opening match.
The USA with three points in the pocket after a 1-0 win over Guatemala hope to make it six points when they face Trinidad and Tobago. However, anyone expecting to see the ####mp;T side from last summer’s World Cup will be largely disappointed. Only Densil Theobold from the World Cup squad remains as the others are locked in a bonus dispute with the ####mp;T Football Association and have been suspended.
It is the sort of situation that CONCACAF or FIFA should step into mediate but when Jack Warner’s hands are all over another messy situation we are more likely to get a straight answer at a Steve McClaren press conference.
After a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew Toronto fans are left to decide whether the glass is half full or half empty. While scoring their first goal and gaining their first point on the road is another step forward, Toronto will feel that they let a chance to gain something greater get away.
While most MLS teams have international call ups to worry about in the next few weeks the problem has already hit Toronto. Both Carl Robinson (Wales) and Andrew Boyens (New Zealand) were called up for a friendly in Cardiff and it forced Coach Maurice Johnston to make changes to a side that had been fairly settled over the last four games.
In came Marco Reda as a straight switch for Boyens at centre back while Canadian Chris Pozniak came in to make his first start at left midfield. In turn Andy Welsh moved to the right side of midfield and Ronnie O’Brien took over Robinson’s spot in the centre of midfield. Also coming into the TFC side was striker Jeff Cunningham who arrived this week from Real Salt Lake in exchange for Alecko Eskandarian.
It was, however, a Columbus Crew striker who made the biggest impact in the first half. Making a return after a four-game suspension for elbowing, Andy Herron took advantage of sloppy Toronto defending to score twice before being forced to leave the game due to a thigh injury with less than forty minutes played.
Both Crew goals left Toronto defender Marvell Wynne badly exposed after poor positional play and marking by the Toronto central defenders. In between the two Columbus goals Toronto had equalized through a classic big-man wee-man combination of Dichio and Cunningham. After Dichio controlled and knocked down a long-ball to Cunningham, the new striker played a return pass that Dichio whipped past Andy Gruenebaum in the Crew goal from the edge of the penalty box.
Mo Johnston must have administered his own form of the air dryer at half time as a more defensively sound and organized side appeared in the second half. And it didn’t take long for Toronto to tie the game up. Five minutes into the second half a simple but well executed free kick routine saw Jim Brennan hammer home a shot from 30-plus yards out. However, given that the ball hit closer to the middle of the net than the corner you would have to question keeper Gruenebaum’s positioning.
Columbus may have enjoyed more of the possession in the second-half but it was Toronto that created more scoring opportunities as Dichio drifted into deeper positions and left space behind the Crew defense for Cunningham to exploit with his pace. Cunningham took advantage and found himself with only the keeper to beat on a number of occasions but failed to score each time.
The draw leaves both teams on the same number of points but and with a number of challenges to overcome. Without Andy Herron the Columbus Crew attack looks as threatening as a rubber knife, while Toronto’s lack of squad depth could prove costly over the next six weeks.
Next up for Toronto is a visit from the Colorado Rapids next Saturday while the following day the Crew is away to Chicago Fire.
Saturday started at 4:30 a.m. and finished around midnight. In between there was a trip to Toronto to work the Chicago game for Fox Soccer Channel and what a great day it turned out to be. The new stadium is a terrific venue but it is the enthusiasm of the fans that stands out. The close to 20,000 fans (including a healthy number of supporters who made the trek from Chicago) in attendance were given a match to remember with Toronto FC notching their first goal and eventually their first win.
There was also the first red card in Toronto FC’s history with the scorer of the first goal Danny Dichio sent off along with Chicago Fire’s Diego Gutierrez on the stroke of half time. Todd Grisham, who was anchoring the FSC presentation, asked just as we were about to start the second half who might now have the advantage.
My opinion was that it would be easier for Chicago to cover the loss of Gutierrez in midfield than it would be for Toronto to compensate for the loss of their big striker. How wrong I was and it was down to how Toronto coach Mo Johnston reacted to the enforced change.
Johnston moved Edson Buddle further forward from his support role to take the lone striker position. Maurice Edu was also asked to work harder than he had even done in the first half when he helped set up the Toronto goal and to get forward and support Buddle. But the most crucial move was keeping Ronnie O’Brien and Andy Welsh wide on the right and left touchlines respectively.
It was a move that could have backfired and provided the Fire with an opportunity to overrun the midfield. As it turned out O’Brien (making his first MLS appearance for Toronto) and Welsh (playing his best game so far since arriving from England) stretched the Chicago back three and midfield and never allowed the Fire to dictate play in the second half.
The Toronto midfield constantly changed the point of attack from wing to wing and it paid off with two second half goals. Like the first goal, the second and third goals came from crosses from the right wing and both involved diagonal runs across the Chicago defense. First Buddle and then Welsh created space for Kevin Goldthwaite and Maurice Edu at the back post and both goals were put away with some panache and composure.
This first win for Toronto sets up an intriguing encounter this Wednesday at BMO Field with reigning MLS Champions, the Houston Dynamo. Houston’s ranks include Canadian internationals Pat Onstad and the mercurial Dwayne de Rosario.
Quip of the day: Fans attending the game on Saturday were provided with cushions upon their entry to the stadium. The cushions also doubled as Frisbees and were launched on mass onto the park when Toronto scored their first ever goal. Well known Canadian broadcaster and analyst #### Howard was working the sideline with FSR anchor Jeremy St. Louis. As an army of volunteers cleared the field of cushions #### turned to Jeremy and said, “Could be problems on Wednesday night with the battery give-away”.

The Bundesliga takes top spot this weekend as we reach the penultimate round and three teams are still in contention for the title. Schalke leads with 65 points, followed by Stuttgart on 64 and Werder Bremen are third on 63. By the looks of it Schalke and Stuttgart have the more difficult games although circumstances could conspire to give Schalke their first ever Bundesliga title this weekend.
Borussia Dortmund and 80,000 fans await Schalke who have not lost in Dortmund since 1998. However, three consecutive wins have seen Dortmund move out of relegation trouble and now sit in the top half of the table. Schalke’s final game next weekend is at home toArminia Bielefeld.
Stuttgart can still complete the domestic double and plays Nuremberg in the German Cup Final on May 26. Stuttgart are on a six-match winning run and are away to Bochum another side that has been enjoying a fine run of form. Bochum were Bundesliga 2 champions last season and have won their last three in a row and six of their last 8. Greek striker Theofanis Gkekas is the man that Stuttgart must watch. He has scored thirteen goals in the last 11 games and it looks like he will be playing for Bayer Leverkusen next season. Energie Cottbus will be Stuttgart’s final opponent next weekend.
Werder Bremen’s opponents Eintracht Frankfurt sit just above the relegation zone in 14th position and are not yet guaranteed Bundesliga football next season. Bremen’s last match is against another side haunted by the threat of relegation - Wolfsburg .
There are a raft of games in Spain that impact on both the top and bottom of La Liga. Fresh from a Copa del Rey thrashing from Getafe Barcelona are up against strugglers Real Betis. Betis have gone eight games without a win and travel to the Nou Camp where Barcelona have yet to lose a league game this season.
Good fortune is with Real Madrid at the moment and this weekend they face mid-table Espanyol in a game that looks tricky. However, Espanyol has a UEFA Cup Final next Wednesday in Glasgow and are likely to rest and number of their players.
Real Madrid have now won six of their last seven and are within two points of the leaders. Van Nistelrooy is now the leading scorer in La Liga with 20 goals. David Beckham and Robinho are both suspended for this game. Espanyol are without a win at the Bernabeu since 1996 and in the last two visits they lost by four goals each time.
Espanyol stand between Sevilla and a repeat UEFA Cup win. Although by losing to Real Madrid last weekend Sevilla slipped back to third in the table, they still have a chance to do a treble. They also have Sevilla just two points behind. This weekend Sevilla plays Recreativo de Huleva the oldest club in Spain. Recreativo are having a terrific season and are pushing for a spot in next season’s UEFA Cup.
At the other end of the table it is 18th vs. 16th with Celta Vigo playing Levante. Celta have lost their last 3 and have only one win in their last 10. The arrival of Hristo Stoitchkov as coach has done little to stem the bleeding. Levante have only two away wins and Celta have with only 2 home wins so a draw would not be a surprise. In fact Celta Vigo would probably prefer to play away from home given that they have taken 18 of their 30 points on the road.
The bottom two teams Gimnastic and Real Sociedad face each other. A loss for Gimnastic would mean almost certain relegation as it would leave them at least nine points from safety with only 12 points still to play for. Real Sociedad’s position is not much better and are only three points better off than Gimnastic. Sociedad gained their only win on the road in their last away game against Real Betis.
All eyes on the Premiership will be on the games at Old Trafford and Bramall Lane. These matches will decide the final relegation spot. A draw or better for West Ham away to nine time Premiership Champions Manchester United will secure Premiership football next season – as long as the civil legal system does not become involved. Wigan know that anything less than a win against fellow strugglers Sheffield United will drop them back to the Championship after two seasons of Premiership football.
A draw is good enough for Sheffield although they could survive even if they and West Ham both lose. Three teams would then be tied on 38 points but Wigan would have a better goal difference than Sheffield. The last spot would then depend on how many goals Sheffield and West Ham lose by on Sunday.
While two teams will be happy come Sunday night the Premiership play offs get underway on Saturday.
If West Bromwich Albion manages to win the play-offs and join Birmingham and Sunderland in net season’s Premiership it will be the first time since 1914-15 that all the teams relegated from the top flight will bounced straight back. Back then it was Preston North End and Derby County achieved the feat. Southampton needed to win their last three games of the regular season to make it into the play offs for the first time. But for manager George Burley it is his seventh play off series and so far he has only experienced one success. Derby manager Billy Davies has had a team (Preston North End) in the play offs the last two years and has gone out at the semi and final stages. Derby won regular season series with a win and a draw. The strikers to watch out for are Steve Howard (Derby) with 16 goals and Grzegorz Rasiak of Southampton – a former Derby player before a move to Spurs – with 18 goals.
The other semi final is the Black Country derby between Wolves and West Brom. At the midway point Wolves were down in 14th spot but worked there way up to a 5th place finish. Goals were a problem for Wolves – 59 was the lowest total of teams finishing in the top ten – but they did get into a good habit of winning tight games. Wolves had seven 1-0 wins away from home. On the other hand West Brom scored more goals at home (51) than any other side. The season series was split with a win each.
Play off predictions anyone?
Jeremy St. Louis and I will be in Toronto this weekend to augment the FSC crew as they broadcast the Toronto FC vs. Chicago Fire match. We are both looking forward to seeing BMO Field for the first and enjoying the atmosphere generated by another full house of almost 20,000 fans.
