Portsmouth - A little step forward or a large step back?
Jul 15, 2008 | 9:58AM | report this
Amid all this summer’s transfer talk one of the few big money moves to actually happen has been the $20M+ transfer of Peter Crouch from Liverpool to FA Cup holders Portsmouth. Taken at face value the intent would seem to be to play Crouch in attack alongside former West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.

The press has been quick to label the pair as a “little and large” combination. The little and large arrangement appeals to a number of sensibilities as it seems to match the best of two of the most common type forwards – the big fellow who is good in the air and the wee speedy striker with a nose for knock downs and an eye for a half chance.

But such combos appear to have fallen out of favour and instead many of the most successful Premiership scoring partnerships over the last few seasons have been made up of a striker and a midfielder - Van Nistelrooy and Scholes; Henry and Pires; Torres and Gerrard; Drogba and Lampard.

Nevertheless strike partnerships such as Quinn/Phillips (Sunderland), Heskey/Owen (Liverpool) and Dublin/Vassell (Aston Villa) have shown that a pairing of a big man and wee man along with the right supporting cast can sometimes deliver goals.

But when it comes down to ranking big and small pairings no combo has yet bettered the Kevin Keegan and John Toshack partnership from the Liverpool team of the seventies. Keegan and Toshack is still regarded as the consummate “little and large” strike partnership although as the years have gone by there has been a tendency to think only in terms of long balls pumped forward for the big strong Toshack to knock on for the speedy and nimble Keegan.

There was a lot more to the duo than balls thumped forward looking for Toshack to make contact. Keegan’s prodigious work rate and unselfish running created all sorts of problems for defenders who had become use to marking relatively static target men while Toshack was an intelligent reader of the game who was rarely given sufficient credit for his anticipation and touch.

Encouraging for Portsmouth fans is the fact that Peter Crouch’s only double figure scoring season in the Premiership (12 goals) was in 04/05 when he combined with “little” Kevin Phillips. It also marked Phillips last good Premiership season (10) although Southampton was relegated.

Both Crouch and Defoe have had trouble holding down regular staring spots at their previous clubs with over a third of their Premiership appearances coming as substitutes. Defoe has been the most productive scorer of the two and has also racked up 50% more Premiership appearances than Crouch despite being a year younger – 26 to Crouch’s 27.

Sixteen of Defoe’s 69 Premiership goals in 225 appearances have come off the bench and his 33 helpers reinforce his reputation as a striker who who is sometimes overly focused on his own exploits. Defoe’s best Premiership season for goals came in 2006/07 when he notched a dozen but he has finished two other seasons in double figures.

Crouch has 38 Premiership goals to his credit in 149 appearances although his 5 goals as a substitute seem to contradict the widely held opinion of him as a goalscoring “super-sub”.

In linking Crouch and Defoe Portsmouth boss Harry Rednapp is looking to improve Portsmouth’s goal output knowing that if his club is to improve further then more goals are necessary. In their five Premiership seasons Portsmouth’s scoring has ranged from a low of 37 (miracle escape year) to a high of 48 last season.

The best season return from a single player came from Yakubu with 13 in 04/05 and their two top goal scorers have never broken twenty between them in the five seasons - the best performance was in 2003/04 with Yakubu 11 and Sheringham 9.

Strangely that total was matched last season with Benjani collecting 12 goals and Defoe 8 but these two crossed transfer paths during the January transfer window and never did play together. For Harry Rednapp a change in preferred tactics may also be in order – especially at home.

Although last season Portsmouth finished a best ever 8th in the Premiership Pompey’s home form slipped and four single goal losses and eight draws at home meant a goal here and there might have meant a realistic challenge to fifth place Everton.

Rednapp’s favoured formation was the lone striker and although these tactics worked to Portsmouth’s advantage away from home it often backfired at home. Twenty-four goals in nineteen home games is far from prestigious but it becomes anemic when you consider that 17 goals came in only 4 games (against Reading, Birmingham, Bolton and Derby).

If Portsmouth is become a consistent top six finisher then not only do Crouch and Defoe have to become a dependable source for goals but Rednapp needs to make sure that more goals at one end are not negated at the other. Portsmouth need to find a way to service and support two strikers while keeping the midfield from being overrun and the defense from conceding more goals.

Welcome back Bobby! I do hope you are having a good summer.

For me Benitez bought Crouch b/c he only had a few million to play with, prior to the Laurel and Hardy take over. Everone looks at his gangly style and b/c he does not look so elegant, branded him with all sorts of names.
I do believe he is capable of scoring 20 goals next season for Portsmouth in all competitions if he gets a regular start. I am certain that Harry will get more out of Him than did Rafa, but then Harry will play him more.
With Kanu may be staying another year, Harry has options although I doubt we will see too much of Kanu paired wirh Crouch uness Defoe gets injured.

What Harry manages to play in midfield may well define Crouches, indeed Portsmouth's season. How long Campbell has got is another question?
I am not sure what options Harry has for CBs but if he is to mount a credible campaign for a top six finish he will have to stop leaking goals and this I suspect will be more important, than the front pairing as the season goes on.
If Harry does nor strengthen in CB and CM I doubt they will finish above 8th.

Defoe and Crouch should be good for a good 25-30 goals this season between the 2 of them...

I would say Pompey are good enough to finish 6th this season... But I think them playing in the UEFA Cup for the first time will work against them, and they'll drop points they otherwise wouldn't have.

I am quite impressed with what Harry is doing at Portsmouth this year - Crouchie was a thorough professional at Liverpool and will always be welcomed back at the Kop - he wanted to move for regular football and he understood whom he had to compete with - the right move all around -

If Harry brings in SWP - I think Portsmouth will be pushing for 5th

I am still waiting for my FSC goody bag for coming in second in your Euro prediction pool.

May I suggest you come up with a similar prediciton pool for the premiership?

I think that it also bears mentioning that Crouch isn't a traditional "big man". The guy weighs about 45 lbs. soaking wet, has no upper body strength at all, and is regularly beat in the air by much shorter (albeit stronger) defenders.

I'm not knocking him by the way, I think he was an excellent buy and I do believe that he's score 15-20 goals this year. I don't see him bringing the ball down in the box, or putting in a lot of headers though...

Most forwards are as good as their service. Lets see what he buys for his midfield. I have empathy for both these guys and hope they have agood season.

I think u dislike Peter Crouchg as much as Tim Vickery hates Gilberto Silva. LOL

The best player on Pompey right now is lassana Diarra. He is the only arsenal reject i would want on my team

What I like about this pairing (if they are paired together) is that both of them will draw attention from defenses. You have to be aware of Crouch in the air and give him special attention. You also have to be aware of Defoe beating defenses with quickness and speed.

Whoever they play may just have their hands full. That is if the midfield can do its part in controlling the game and getting service up to the forwards. And while their midfield is solid, it's not great. Watch out if all 11 of Pompey come to play. That could be nice.

Here's my conclusion........Defoe and Crouch are the non-alcoholic version of Drogba and Sheva. I'm looking forward to watching.

"Defoe and Crouch are the non-alcoholic version of Drogba and Sheva"

You get the prize for best analogy on the blog! Hilarious!

atleti, it will absolutely kill me to see Kun come to England! Kill me, I tell you, esp. if he goes to the mancs! I refuse to believe that it will happen! Your club has to make him stay there! Mind you, I'd love to see him at Arsenal but then again...I wouldn't, because I don't think such a fantastic player deserves the mindless kicking he'll get in England.

aldoray, c'mon, you wouldn't take Flamini in your team?

Have to say, I'll be very very curious to see how Crouch and DeFoe work together. One of my favorite things to watch in football is to see how player-pairings develop or don't develop --- esp. striker-pairings since we don't see too many of them anymore.

Can't help it, I love DeFoe being described as "a wee man." :-D

On the other hand, Portsmouth is an awesome club I've always liked to watch. Their reserve goalkeeper, canadian international Asmir Begovic, signed a new 3 year contract with Pompey.

claude4pres: ummm :crouch good in the air?. yeah not so much. I understand where you are coming from but for as tall as he is, the header is not one of his strong suits compared to his cross body volley. Anyway I like that crouchy is going to be on the pitch more and tune his scoring radar (just for england reasons) but unfortunatly it is for portsmouth.

Atleti you're on! Brit Cafe on portage Avenue will do for a good English Breakfast and if we throw some Haggis in Bobby might come!

Crouch could easily hit 20 in all comps next season, when you look at the 3 domestic comps as well as the UEFA cup. 12 to 14 Prem goals and 6-8 in all other comps is very doable for the big man.

like the little and large comparison but how tall do you have to be, my favourite combo was the D-Men for the villa. Dalian Atkinson and Deano., although I think Atkinson was only 6ft or so. but deano was under 5'9. Close enough.

3lions9 - Good question and when I was researching the article I did look at what might constitute a big man and a wee man. I went with over 6 foot and under 5 foot 9. I was surprised to find out that Toshack was 6 foot 1 - I thought he would have been taller.

Crouch and Defoe should def succeed as a pairing for Pompey with Kranjcar and co. supplying them. The danger for Harry is that playing the two strikers means that he would have a 4 man midfield. Pompey's strength last season was that 5 man midfield they were able to play with Kranjcar, Diarra, Muntari, Diop and Utaka. 4 in the midfield may definitely leave the back four a little exposed. Distin is pretty good but Campbell's age and Johnson's penchant for getting forward may leave them a little stretched at the back.

Kinda interested in what kind of money Wenger will get for Gilberto. Its all those little deals he does that really keep the squad free of agitators (Freddie last year, Jens this year, Diarra in the winter) all the while earning some extra transfer money and cutting wages.

This summer alone they cut Jens wage and Gilbertos next which really adds up in the long run not to mention both players are looking to play not be subs.

seal up the Hleb deal tomorrow which pretty much covers the Nasri deal and Arsenal are only in the red for Ramsey which honestly is offset by (between wages and transfer fees) Gilberto, Jens and sadly Flamster leaving.

I honestly expect one more big signing, after raising ticket prices this week its the least they could do for the fans who actually shell out the money.

edit: supposedly 1m for Gilberto. Cant really complain, it all adds up.

Barry for 18 a mili or Alonso for 14 a Mili...

I'll take Alonso coz he's cheaper and has a bunch of experience in big games and not to forget his great relationship with Mr. Fabolous.

Though Barry would bring that English fighting spirit that we seemed to luck when things became tough...

Or we can both and despose J. Hoyte to Villa and get Barry for lesser money. It would make my day to see Hoyte leave...

Helb seems like he's gone. A great player who on his day looked like mini Zidane...his ability to keep control and get out of small spaces is out of this world. But he never really fit Wengers plans coz Wenger wanted him in the Wing position but he was more of a n.o 10 than a winger. We need a Winger more than we need n.o 10. We can play Cesc, Van. P. Eduardo, Rosisky all on the n.o 10 but none of them are as effective on the Wings as they r in the Center. So get a winger or give Vela, Ramsey, Nasri or Walcott a chance on the Wings now... Helb also always seemed to stop or slow down the counter attack coz he always took extra touches...

I've never been much of a Crouch fan but to each his own, I guess. Although he is great in the air he doesn't seem overly creative to me and he cries a bit too much for my taste. But I suppose that last bit could be said for quite a few out there.

Regardless, if Chelsea ends up pulling in Robinho from Real and assuming Deco returns to a fair portion of his former self I would have to say that the Blues are frontrunners to win the EPL and possibly some additional silverware on top of that this term. There is just too much skill on the squad for anyone to deal with including Man U.

Not sure who said it already(because I don't feel like re-reading everyone's response) but whoever said it depends on the service they get is spot on.

Whether tall, short, fat or skinny no player scores goals without service.

Some players can create goals but Defoe and Crouch aren't those players. If Portsmouth gets decent service in then I think you're going to see both players reach double figures.

If Pompey plays, as Bobby pointed out, the same "negative" football as last season then Crouch's arrival was nothing more than for the fact he is great with the ball at his feet and holding up the play so as to bring others into it.

DG-No I wouldn't take Flamini. Its easy to look good in a holding midfielders spot when your team has possession of the ball for 75% of the time and is in the opponents third 50% of that time.

Atleti-Juve fans aren't too happy about Poulsen coming in.

To whomever asked about the change in top 3 of La Liga-Barca and Madrid will be there and then take your pick from Vilareal, Atletico, Sevilla and maybe even Valencia. Of course you can throw in a couple more teams as well.

So yes there will be changes.

Arsenal can have Barry. Would have liked to have him but he is nowhere near an £18m buy. Bring in Silva and Keane and keep Xabi.

I think you're right. I noticed that there were quite a bit more talk about jumping ship (Lampard, Drogba, Pizzaro, Shevchenko, etc.) of the transfer market rumor mill before Scolari took the reigns. I guess the players and front office are convinced he's building a winner b/c everyone seems to want to stay and he's apparently being supplied with plenty of money to spend. What was the Robinho offer, something like 48 million?

LGB first post I said "arry will play him more but if their midfield cannot supply then neither Crouch nor Defoe will score goals. Harry needs to strengthen more than the attack to finish higher than 8th.

Arsenal appear to be continuing their summer sale and Bentley says he wants a London club. I cannot see Bentley going back to the Arse which leaves Spurs and West 'Am.

Hull have signed Tony Warner but Scott Carson does not appear on Stoke's books as yet. I wonder about Carson after his Croatian debacle and failed move to Villa.

For all the talk not a lot is happening and it makes me wonder where journos find so much to write about.....
