It was an ultra-cagey
first half with neither team willing to commit players forward in numbers
during open play. Free kicks and corners offered up the best opportunities but
even then the keepers were rarely tested.
You got the feeling that if France was
willing to up the pace and go after Romania that they would be rewarded. Tamas
and Goian looked very comfortable when balls were played high into the Romanian
area but there was a sense that the ball played quickly along the ground might
have provided them with a far greater challenge.
What's more Romania's goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont seemed at times to be intent on writing his own special chapter focusing on passbacks in the David James and Fabian Barthez best seller "Adventures in Goalkeeping."
The second half pretty
much replicated the opening forty-five minutes. France held an edge but Romania
defended with composure and opted to play the ball through the midfield once the
French had surrendered possession.
The French midfield cried out for a player
to quicken the tempo of the game but Makelele’s forte is to slow the pace down
not to speed it up and France rapidly ran out of attacking ideas. The French attack was not helped by a thoroughly badly balanced pairing of Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema.
The second half in
particular was close to a mirror image of the Scotland game in Paris last fall.
A well organized and motivated team comfortably holding off a French side that enjoyed a
significant edge in possession but was unable to change the flow of the game as
their attacking options weathered and died.
A draw means that no
matter the outcome of the second round of games both countries will enter the
final round with a chance of progressing.
Man-of-the-match
My pick would be left back
Razvan Rat. Tidy in possession and
quick in the tackle Rat not only kept Franck Ribery quiet but he also found
time to move forward to support the Romanian attack.
Italy 0-3 Netherlands
Italy is well known for
starting tournaments slowly but rarely has it cost them as dearly. This time it has and even though the opening goal was undoubtedly offside the Italians were
badly outplayed by a Dutch side was quicker in thought and in execution.
The second Dutch goal was
as beautiful as the first one was offside. The classic counter attack came after
van Bronckhorst had cleared what could have been own goal of the Dutch line and
fed the ball up the left touchline. A glorious 40 yard cross field pass was
headed down by Dirk Kuyt and Sneijder showed great composure and skill to hook
the ball passed Buffon.
A third could have come
before half time as van der Vaart played the pass of the tournament to date. He slipped awonderfully weighted pass
behind Materazzi who looked like he was running in sand to van Nistelrooy. This
time Buffon deflected the shot over.
Italy looked to be poorly equipped
to come back from a two goal deficit. A five minute spell from the 70th
minute, when first Toni and then Grosso got behind the Dutch defence and then
Pirlo was denied off of a free kick by van der Sar, was the best Italy could
offer.
Ironically the best
Italian spell of play ended with another Dutch counter attack and another key
contribution from Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Gio was smart enough to know that
Kuyt would not score one-on-one with Buffon and craftily positioned himself for
the cross that came after Buffon’s save. When Kuyt sent in the cross van
Bronckhorst had a free jump and the goal bound header was helped across the
line by Zambrotta.
A nightmare for Italy; a
dream for the Dutch. But remember……it is only the start.
Stat check – Italy’s worst
defeat at major finals since losing 4-1 to Brazil in 1970?
Comment of the Day
This was a description of
Croatia midfielder Luka Modric by Peter Mallett in Saturday’s Globe & Mail.
“Traditionally known for
tireless running, precision through balls and brute physical strength this
22-year-old midfielder personifies all that makes the red, white and blue
checkered shirts of Croatia revered.”
Hmmm - Brute strength? At a little over 5 foot 9 inches and 143
pounds soaking wet Modric might be considered a brute by an under-13 girl’s
team but that is about it.
Prediction Pool
Here is a breakdown of the
winners as predicted on the blog by Friday’s posters.
Germany 25.9%
Spain 19.5%
Italy 13.9%
France 13.0%
Portugal 12.0%
Netherlands 9.2%
Romania 2.8%
Russia
1.9%
Croatia 0.9%
Sweden 0.9%
Thanks to everyone who took the contribute their predictions and I will post the interim leaders at the completion of the group stage.
France jump out to an early lead... But unlike the Swiss and Austrians, the Romanians find a way to take a share of the spoils, and by that I mean they have Adrian Mutu... First draw of the tournament, rather boring 1-1...
People keep talking about Italy's "weak" back line... If 3 out of 4 who started and won the last World Cup, and a player who's arguably the best player ever at his position between the posts is "weak"... Damn, it'll be a long tournament for everyone who has to play them... The Dutch have the strike force, but they don't have anything backing it up... And the man who I think is their best play maker in Arjen Robben, is out... It'll be a long day for them trying to score...
Whats sad is that almost everybody who picked Germany only did so because Bobby predicted it. Bobby's a great analyst, but there are clearly better teams in this Euro 2008 than Germany. Italy's back line has been called weak, but Cannavaro is the only defender that's out from the World Cup team that only allowed 1 real goal (they had an own goal in their 1-1 draw against the U.S.) and that came from a penalty! They have one of the best goalies in the world, almost nothing gets by Buffon. Portugal has the most attacking talent in this tournament with Christiano Ronaldo, and the setup man, Deco.
Germany makes it to the semis, but gets beat by Portugal 1-0

Podolski was the only good player for germany vs. poland, and he's not german! he was born in Poland! if he plays on poland like he should, poland wins 2-0
Germany was the betting favorite going into the tournament and they looked pretty solid yesterday. I think them being the world wide bookies pick had more sway then Bobby.
edit: Also I'm pretty sure the Podolski story goes that he tried out for the Polish team as a youth got cut then tried out for the German youth team and got capped and the rest is history.
ChelseaFan, I, for one, picked Germany long before I read Bobby's predictions and I never pay any attention to bookies either. I agree that people can be impressionable or lazy. For example, I could give a lazy assessment that a team without a striker has no chance at winning the tournament, but you clearly disagree.
Fair point, but I'd rather see him play alongside Benzema than Henry, but only because I watched more of Henry in 07/08 and was totally underwhelmed by his performances.
cf4l-Italy let in two real goals, an own goal is real.
If you want to be picky than you could say the Swiss who never let in a goal in the whole of the 2006 tournament had a better defense.
In fact Ukraine who knocked out the Swiss were just as good as Italy in that QF match. They created more chances and the 3-0 scorline was very flattering for the Italians.
That said if you look at Germany's squad, the group they are in and the probable opposition on their way to the final its far easier than if they were in Group C or D. So not really that big of a surprise that many picked Germany.
As for your assessment about Portugal...I'm pretty sure that France, Holland, Spain and Germany could say otherwise about who has the most AND best attacking options.
verbal97, I respect that you picked Germany of your own choice. I did think about the striker problem that Portugal has. If Hugo Almeida can get 1 or 2 goals in this tournament, Christiano Ronaldo & Co. can get the rest of the scoring done mostly off of set peices
Totally off-topic, but does anyone know whether Germany got to keep the original trophy after winning the Euros for the third time in '96? Brazil got to keep the Remy, I understand Liverpool got to keep the Champions League trophy after their fifth win, and I assume Milan and Real Madrid have also been given this honour. Just wondering, especially since this Euro trophy looks so puny and they should find an excuse to design something more magnificent.
Anyone still think Domenech not picking Trez was a good move? Especially with how Anelka is/was... I for one would take Trez over Anelka any day of the week, and twice on any day with an important game... Also, Gomis looked absolutely aweful. Pathetic on the ball, slower than molasses off it. I don't think Austria would even want him, with the way he played today...
Good result for Romania, they knew they needed more points than zero at the end of the day, and that's exactly what they got, they're right in the thick of it now, good for them. Don't even know where to begin with France, but I have very little doubts that this will be a 3 game tournament for them.
Is it just me or do a lot of soccer players complain and yell at each other? That's kind of weird.
VIDEO REPLAYS
honestly, I've seen enough. I love that soccer has primarily maintained its traditional approach to refereeing. However, I think it's time that post-match video reviews are conducted on diving. I can't believe grown men act they way they do. Who in their right mind, while falling, throws their arms in the air? Most people I know would actually try to use their arms to cushion their fall. So far the Poles and Turks have been the worse, from what I could tell. People should have more pride in what they're doing...
"Podolski [is] ... not german [sic]! he was born in Poland! if he plays on poland like he should ..."
So I guess that the only the US is allowed to invite foreign-born players to join the national team once they have acquired citizenship, right?
... or are you saying Freddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, and Pablo Mastroeni, among others, have no right to play on the USMNT because they are not really American (by your standards)?
Give it a break and move on: Podolski has lived in Germany since he was a baby and acquired German citizenship as a Spätaussiedler-- he's German with Polish ancestry. So what is the big deal? Too bad for the Polish NT, but it happens all the time in sport.*
* Any hockey fans remember Brett Hull? (the Canadian chant was: "Who is the best player on the US (national mens' hockey) team? Brett Hull. Why? Because he's Canadian ...")

Actually, both-- see the link in my previous post (he was automatically entitled to German citizenship by ancestry).
And what do you have against Rossi-- so he wants the chance to win a WC ... do you blame him?! (Actually, if Podolski had chosen to play for Poland, his case would have been quite similar to Rossi's, don't you think?)
;-)

I cannot believe that first goal was allowed to stand. That line judge should be dismissed from his duties at half time, and stuck in charge of matches in the Cyprus league next year. That was inexcusible to get wrong... Unbelievable
France seemed to just need a moment of brillence to turn the game which non of there players provided.
They missed Viera's drive and passion and missed Henry's class and brillence on offense.
Bad call from the ref and linesman that 1st goal was so off-side even Ruud boy couldn't believe it the whole time he was celebrating. The 2nd goal was just bad def. Maybe they will miss Cannavaro.
Ar5ena1 kit: Dead ringer for Charlton Athletic 2000 or 1986. Good choice for a team in decline.
And why - WHY!? - do they force the Italians to play this brutal, inhumane sport. Every touch, every bump produces an agonized grimace, a shriek of suffering, a prostrate body.
Where's Amnesty International on this issue? Nice that the ref refused to accept that Van Nistelrooy was offside on his goal. The defender who was lying off the field was there as a reslt of a fairly innocuous bump with Buffon. If the ref refused to accept this bad act, then good for him.

My mother used to tell me that crazy people will say lots of BLEEP, but there are a few times when they make a good point.
agree with you FLASH. :)

The Italians are done -3GD, the only player capable of saving them is Del Piero, but I doubt he'll see the field with an Italian shirt on again. Even if i think the opening goal should have been disallowed(i have a feeling this will be exhausted in detail on the Report tonight)
I knew Group C would be my albatross
I'm glad I missed France-Romania from the autopsy report it was the bore fest of the tourney, and with the matches so far thats an accomplishment.

Yea Italy is in a deep hole now they pretty much have to win the next 2 games because of the goal difference.
TH France can only meet Portugal in the finals and France wont be there if they keep playing like today and Portugal has a punchers chance against Germany in the semis as the rest of the teams in A+B have looked pretty average.
Pretty much spot on with your France-Romania analysis about the lack of tempo to the French attack. I'd only caution people that the French suffered a similar abysmal start to 2006 World Cup and managed to do quite well. I'll be fascinated to see how they decide to go after the Dutch.
As for Italy-Holland, there'll be howls of outrage in the press after the terrible decision to allow van Nistelrooy's goal. He looked to be a good two yards offside. But those are the breaks and great sides manage to overturn those kinds of unjust decisions. Italy had a couple of dodgy decisions go their way on the way to the World Cup in 2006. One went against them today. That's football. It should make for interesting watching in the final two matches, particularly when France and Italy meet in the final game and both need a result.
In the big scheme of things, it is irrelevant whether the first goal was offside or not. Holland were phenomenal today...Italy should be thankful that it wasn't 5-0.
Thank you NL for a wonderful display of team football.
I hope by interesting you mean mind numbingly boring, both teams are so offensively inept its insane. And even if they both need the result, the game would be like watching two 1 legged men compete in an #### kicking contest.
The reson I love the new Arsenal Kit is because it brings back good memories and is the first Arsenal Kit I bought back in Kenya was that 01-02 Dreamcast Kit although it was a fake it didn't even have the nike label... still own it to this day.
And Italy still have a big chance to qualify thanks to that Draw by France. I think France are the ones who should feel troubled coz they have to play a very good looking and confident Dutch team then finish it of with Italy. Italy know they can beat Romania if they play well France no they will have to be really really good against that Dutch team. That why it was such a bad result for France today...
Oi Flash, ease up on the new gear, your spuds looked like Leeds last season and played like em too.good idea switching back to your famous blue shorts.
Great performance by the Dutch, Congrats!
Finally a terrific match.
Italy had enough chances but could not score in a brothel.
Mind numbing lineup for Italy, an all Milan midfield? That made sense considering how that side played all year.
Pirlo was all over the pitch with little help from MC, GG or MA.
Why De Rossi did not start in place of MA is disturbing and why wasn't Grosso in at the start?
Sneijder, Van De Vaart, Gio, Kuyt, Ooijer were fantastic. As was EVDS.
If Italy win their match and France at least draw with Holland, Italy will be favorites to go through.
I thought Romania was an interesting match to watch. Domenech was outcoached, he needed to put Ribery behind his front men and bring someone else out on the right.
Anelka and Benzema didn't get any service of note and the one chance that did fall to Anelka, I disagree with the ESPN analysts, it would've been a teriffic finish. True no one was on him as he headed it but the ball was moving fast and bouncing when he went to head it.
As for Italy-Holland, Italy were outplayed. Holland got the deserved result. Holland unlucky not score more.
What will be interesting to see in the France-Holland match is where the extra man will come from in Holland's counter-attack. With Ribery and Moulada on the wings hard to see the Dutch full backs getting forward like they did against Italy.
The one benefit is that the French like to play deep in the middle of the pitch and if you let Sneijder or Van Der Vaart time on the ball with Horse face in the box, you're asking for trouble.
By interesting I meant interesting. As in it's interesting you'd comment on France's offensive ineptness even though you didn't bother to watch today's match.
And speaking of the game you missed, Les Bleus were hurt by their absentees, notably in the centre of the park as Bobby observed, as well as Romania's cautious tactics. Domenech's squad and team selection continue to interest (there's that word again) me. As in I'm curious about how the man's mind works. I can only assume Diarra and Flamini were born under the wrong star because they might have injected the necessary urgency to bother the Romanians. But I digress.
The Dutch, I suspect, will play with a good deal more adventure, which should leave some more space for the likes of Ribery and perhaps Henry -- another notable absence -- to exploit.
Because, as gongatore pointed out, the Azzuri clearly had chances and didn't take them. And like him, I wouldn't rule out Italy or France based on the result of one match.
I have Holland to be runners up the group and predicted a 2-0 win today.
I have no exact scores yet but 5 right results out of 6 so far in a competition with my sons. I think after todays display Italy will bounce back and win the group on the last day. If Holland win the group they have a great chance to make the final with Spain the main obstacle in a possible SF clash. Best game so far, bar none, this afternoon.
