Henry14 - I wanted to ask a couple of questions because we had a heated exchange with my friends

q1 Do Arsenal need a striker?
My argument was that as much as l like Ade you do not get the feeling that he will do it again and l think Wenger is with me when he said he over achieved. Walcott and Bendtner are not consistent and l agree with you he is more of a winger than striker and rvp is always crocked
q2 Wenger is said to buy a defender assuming that he is a shoe in who would get rid of Gallas or Toure? l would take Toure any day.

Bobby – Q1 – Arsenal do not need another striker, certainly not when you consider that Achilles heel this season was the defence and their overall depth. I know there has been a heated discussion going about Adebayor and frankly I would be shocked (and stunned) if he turned out to be a one-season wonder. As long as he keeps up the work rate he will score goals. Q 2 – You don’t get rid of either of them. How many times in a season does a manager get a chance to pick a first choice eleven? Very rarely. Arsenal needs to depth and talking of getting rid of Toure or Gallas does not make sense to me.

Quest5227 - Manchester United need a day-to-day right-back for the future. Whom do you think they should try to get, and whom do you think they will get? (They may not get their first choice.)
Thanks.

Bobby – I am not a fan of Owen Hargreaves playing in midfield for United and he may be the answer at right back post-Gary Neville.

Ringo - Read a piece in the Guardian over the weekend comparing Avram Grant to Tony Barton, what do you think?

Bobby – I was thinking the same thing myself a few weeks ago. The only trouble was I could remember Ron Saunders but not who replaced him. Sort of sums it up doesn’t it.

Verbal97 - I'm NOT looking forward to Bobby posting the predictions.

Bobby – I looked up your predictions and no wonder you are not looking forward to it!!!

“There is a lot of underestimating Liverpool going on and thus a lot of impossible predictions. There is NO way that Liverpool finish any worse than 3rd (i.e., worse than they've finished the past 2 seasons). To predict them 5th (or even 4th) is about the same as predicting Wigan to win the league IMO.”

“I don't understand how anyone (yes, including Bobby) can have Liverpool any lower than 3rd. What about their signings, etc, make any of you believe they'll actually regress this season? And while other teams MAY have improved, I don't see any other team, including Arsenal, that can jump up the table past them.”

And there is more where these came from once the Whoops stops whoopsing.

DVXPrime - 1) Does Rafa Benitez keep his job? Shut out of the (domestic and European) cups and Year #18 without a League title...hmmm...

2) In your opinion, which clubs have done the best with a 4-5-1 (or similar) formation, and which clubs should try something else?

3) Why doesn't Canada rate a spot in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup? Not too badmouth Toronto FC, but MLS has plenty of representatives, Canada has a pro soccer league (if I'm wrong I stand corrected in advance), and MLS has had enough heartbreak in the CCC without being (poorly) represented by a second-year club.

Bobby – 1. Does Rafa get fired? – No way. Does he leave? I still think there is more of a chance of him leaving than staying.

2. I don’t think that is a question that can be answered. All the Premiership teams that I have seen this season have opted to play that way at some point.

3. Canada will have a representative in the “new” Champions League starting in 2008/09. Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Montreal Impact are playing a round-robin over the next few months to decide a Canadian representative. (Canada does not have a national soccer league. It has a league named the Canadian Soccer League but the teams are all located in the east. It is not a true national league by any means.)

Gongatore - Wow outstanding piece but you are a bit remiss. Where's the post mortem on La Liga and Serie A?

Bobby – Wind up or not I will post the original predictions at the end of the respective seasons…soon.

Aldoray - Clubs in Spain are run and owned much differently than in England. U don’t often here of takeover bids in Spain, just about the president being changed, retiring or losing an election. What are the main differences between club ownership in Spain and England and what can the English structure learn from the Spanish structure of ownership so as to avoid quagmires like that which is going on at Liverpool.

Also Barcelona do not get money for a shirt sponsor (for many years there has been no advertising on their kit, I think they are the only major club like this (UNICEF is free). Why is it that they are able to be financially as strong as other clubs without a shirt sponsor- does this have to do with the previous statement in regards to the structure of the club being different to that of other countries?

Bobby – There is such a fundamental difference between the ownership structures that are commonly found in England versus Spain that goes back to the genesis of the game in each country.

England quickly moved to an entrepreneurial model although there was also a strong philanthropic emphasis as well. Local business men would invest in the club and receive the prestige of ownership.

Up until twenty odd years ago the directors/owners of clubs in the English League were banned from receiving anything put a small dividend and other payments from the club. However, someone realized that by instituting a creative governance and ownership structure you could suck money out of club by way of a holding company.

This was one of the elements that set of numerous clubs being floated on the stock exchange – few with any long term success. Nonetheless with the advent of Sky TV money top teams became a target for hot money leading to the present situation. There is a book or two on how the English game has reached the point it has. David Conn’s book “The Beautiful Game” is a great read while also being very disturbing.

Spanish clubs generally run on a model whereby memberships are sold and renewed every year – hence the elections and Presidential changes. There is a tendency I think, to exaggerate the benefits of the Spanish model.

It hasn’t stopped numerous Presidents of numerous Spanish clubs piling up enormous debt levels and short changing players. You also have to consider that Barcelona and Real Madrid sell their own TV rights, not as a collective organization such as you get with the Premiership.

Gregz- What do U think of Diaby potentially replacing Flamini as Arsenal's holding midfielder? U think he would be up to the task?

Bobby – I think that there is a very good chance that he will be given the chance. I’m not convinced that he is up to it. However, think back to this time last season and I don’t think you would find anyone who thought Flamini could do the job either.

Wiegs9 - With another EPL season complete, I'm wondering if you have seen anything which gives you any indication the top four finishers in the EPL will consist of something different than the Big Four in the foreseeable future. It seems regardless of the challenges the Big Four face (e.g., additional matches, lengthy injury lists, financing a new stadium, substantial debt, etc.), they are able retain all the Champions League spots, and will continue to do so.

Since Spurs' food poisoning incident, I don't get much indication any other EPL side is able to challenge for a CL spot since the difference from 4th to 5th has been 8 and 11 points the last two seasons.

Bobby – It always difficult to see change coming and to be perfectly honest I don’t see anything changing. However, it will because it always has and always will. Success is relatively fleeting even though it doesn’t seem that way sometimes.

Bevo2284 - 1. What has happened to Jose Antonio Reyes? I know he didn’t fit in at Arsenal or Real Madrid but what exactly are his shortcomings and what are your thoughts on him as a player?

2. I know last week there was a lot of Arsenal talk about the Flamini move. If you were Wenger who would be your top three targets in players and positions?

3. What are your thoughts on Sulley Muntari being a replacement for Flamini?

4. There have been rumours (as always) of Hatem Ben Arfa already having agreed to a deal with Arsenal. I think it’s a great move and could potentially be a great replacement for Hleb who looks set to join Inter. What is your opinion of this?

Bobby – 1. Atleti might be a better source on how Reyes is doing although by all accounts it does not seem like he has done very much.  During his time in the Premiership I thought he was far too ponderous on the ball. His inclination when he got the ball was to stop, put his foot on it and allow the opposition to get players behind the ball.

2. Centre half, midfield player, goalkeeper. Who would that be – depends on too many different things.

3. Don’t think so.

4. I haven’t seen enough of him to comment although a young wide player (who can sometimes play up front) doesn’t seem to be the answer to Arsenal’s main problem which is keeping goals out.

ReggaeGunner:

"Liverpool Top 3:

1. Steven Gerrad
2. Jamie Carragher/John Arne Riise
3. Sami Hyypiä
"

craigy:

"LFC

1) RUSH
2) DALGLEISH
3) SOUNESS

REGGAE GUNNER
LFC PICKS - SERIOUSLY?
You poor sod if that's the best you've ever seen of the reds. No wonder you are a Gooner!
"

Three darn good choices, craigy.

Think back to the '80s, ReggaeGunner, when the best of English football was on Merseyside, Red and Blue:

Brief examples of Dalglish, Souness and Rush in action.

Some more examples from one of Scotland's greatest exports-- who was recently voted by LFC supporters as the greatest player ever to wear the Red.

A fun reference to the other half of the greatest strike partnership in English football history, and Toffee-killer extraordinaire ...

("Accrington Stanley ... Who are they?

Exactly ...
"

Classic!)

And ReggaeGunner, as an Arsenal fan you will appreciate that not one of the three LFC greats on craigy's list is English!

Reggae probably never saw Rush, Dalglish or anyone else from 70's, 80's or early 90's play. The top three was from those that you had seen, at least thats what I did.

I've never seen them play so I couldn't put them on my list.

Its like hockey if I were to list my top defenseman of all time, I can't list Bobby Orr. Even though I've heard NUMEROUS good things, great things actually, and there is that one picture(you all know what I'm talking about) but still I couldn't put him up there because I can't honestly rate his game if I've never seen him.

Craigy-Battigol! I remember hoping he would knock out Arsenal in the Champions League. Did you ever find out who that portugese mid was?

As for the bottom three...how do you do that? I know some terrible Liverpool players but there are some who never even got on the pitch that were worse than them. Meaning I saw them in reserves action and so forth. What is the criteria?

Ursus, while I agree in point with your observations of an Asrenal fans assessment of the best three LFC players, your comment about Reggae choosing no English players is true of Craigy too.One welshman Rush and two Scottish internationals in Dalgliesh and Sounness.

English (many Internationals) players at Liverpool? You must remember Ray Clemence (England goalkeeper) Emlyn Hughes, Phil Thompson, Phil Neal, John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Steve McManaman, Keven Keegan, Peter Beardsley, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler.......I could go on.

The worst of Liverpool's Signings in living memory? This list has to include Kvarme, Dundee and Kippe to name but three, all signed by Roy Evans!

would love to get him but at the same time when you read about how he had a trial with Arsenal back in 2002 and we could of had him in the system for the cheap you cringe!

"Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is no stranger to the younger Toure - indeed he spent time on trial at the club in 2002 but a deal was not struck and the Gunners' then Belgian feeder club Beveren sold him to Ukraine outfit Metalurg Donetsk.

Toure, 25, has since moved up and up through his career with Olympiakos, Monaco and now Barca. "

Hes on a European club toure!

Is it of any import that the top three Premiership goals scorers are all imports with Defoe the top English goalscorer at 11th on the list?

I missed this yesterday and have a question for you Bobby which I will post next week.

Bristol City!!!

Probably get Hull in the playoff final as I do not see Watford getting back from 0-2 down........still, stranger things have happened so I am hoping just a little for a quick Watford goal.

I think Zenit will win the UEFA 3-1 but again I hope I am wrong!

What's this? Optimistic talk about the Gunners from gooners? Fellows, fellows, you need to be apprised of a couple of facts. We're going to struggle to stay in the Big Four. That's what proper football journalist Kevin McCarra said in the[url=http://blogs.guardian.co.uk

This blog is supposed to chronicle the decline and fall of Wenger. So read the damn script and stick to it please! No more of this talk about Yaya Toure coming to North London. We're a SELLING club now as Arsene lost his touch according to Jon Carter of [url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/c

Some great players have been left off those lists.
John Barnes was magical for Liverpool. A lot of United supporters would put Schmeichel as one of the top three players during United's Ferguson era. And any Arsenal list of great modern players that doesn't include Patrick Vieira is not worth posting. The same would apply to any United list that doesn't include Royston Keane.

I don't know whether Jaap Stam played long enough for United to be considered for these top-three lists. I'm quite sure, though, that Torres needs to play more than one season to make any Liverpool list.

to your reply to your comments about ben arfa, he is a great player, though he ballhogs the ball a little too much. I think he would come to arsenal only if hleb left, and also because he could go at a bargain price. he isnt a starter at lyon and they bought in jan (although he will start playing in june) ederson, a creative brazilian midfielder from Nice. He is pretty good but needs time to get better, i think in 2-3 yrs he will be one of the best players in the gme.

My apologies redfan4ever, I missed that reference to John Barnes. Great player -- #### manager.

verbal, you're United list is hilarious.

LGB, I did see Bobby Orr play and he was pure genius. Arguably the best player ever, certainly the best blueliner and definitely the most exciting. I remember before the memorable Summit Series between the USSR and Canada, the Soviets said playing against Orr was like being one man down. He was injured and missed the series, where Canada barely squeezed past the Soviets with a last-second goal in Moscow. The nail-biting finish turned it into an iconic event for Canadians and a symbol of the East-West struggle during the Cold War era. If Orr had played, the necessary revolutions brought to modern hockey by the USSR would have been probably delayed because Team Canada would have likely won the series far more comfortably (as they did with him in the lineup for the initial Canada Cup in 1976). Sorry for the diversion into hockey talk!

That's fair.

I apologize if I sounded critical. I just meant (as did craigy, I think) to add some "historical time depth" to the LFC player list-- particularly since players like Dalglish and Rush were among the all-time greats of English football, from any team.

RG chose Gerrard, who qualifies as English, even if he does come from Merseyside ...

I only meant-- as a joke-- that craigy's choices should please an Arsenal supporter, given the lack of English representation on that team.

I recall reading once that the very first side fielded by LFC, in 1892, was entirely composed of Scots-- all 11 of them! It may have been the first time an English League team had no English players ... (and we talk about the current influx of foreign talent into the PL as a new thing ...). LFC seems to have a long tradition of links to Scotland in particular.

redfan4ever:

"English (many Internationals) players at Liverpool? You must remember Ray Clemence ..."

I first heard of LFC around the time Clemence made the move south to WHL, but I was too young, in those pre-internet/ satellite TV days, to follow the team very much.

"John Barnes"

Now there is the answer to the LFC need for a winger ... never mind a great one ...

It would be nice to see Barnes lining up with Aldridge, Rush, and Beardsley again. Would mean a lock on that 19th League title ...

I like Darcheville, why not leave him out there with Novo and Boyd, and let one of them play in the hole? It's a final, and there were 100k Rangers fan in Manchester - LIVE A LITTLE, SMITH.

Atta boy, TH, cheering for the #### Youth. Bet you would have been a great citizen of Vichy France.

Gutsy effort by Rangers. Can't expect a track meet performance from a team playing it's fourth game in 11 days. Part of a ridiculous eight-game set in 20 days. Scottish league execs need their heads examined. Blunt objects optional.

Minus many of their weapons - a sizable bank balance being the most signicant - Rangers were reduced to simply doing what they were capable of and no shame in that. To criticize them is to exhibit a complete lack of awareness of their present circumstances.

Somehow, the 'sake of football' would have survived whether Rangers won or not. They'll be a brighter squad to watch once they've restored their financial health, which isn't too far off.

Meanwhile, the All-Whites will stamp this as a victory for their racist policies. Bet #### Advocaat can't wait to get out of there.

craigy:

"Rushy is a sheep not a jock."

I know-- but still not English in either case, which was my point.

With all the talk these days about the lack of English players amongst the "Big 4" PL teams, think about who made up that great Liverpool team from the 1983-84 season. To remind the younger set, LFC won a "treble" that year: League (third in a row), European Cup (i.e., Champions League) beating Roma in Rome in the final, and League Cup. Rushy had 47 goals-- yep, that's 47-- including 32 in the League.

That squad contained, by my reckoning, the following non-English players:

  • 4 Scots-- Dalglish, Hansen, Souness, Nicol;

  • 1 Welshman-- Rush;

  • 2 Irishmen-- Lawrenson, Whelan;

  • 1 Zimbabwean-- Grobbelaar;

  • 1 Australian-- Johnston.

The only major squad members who were English were Neal, Lee and Kennedy (who am I forgetting?)-- only 3 out of 12, a quarter of the key players ... already in 1983 ...

"Rushy is the kind of player that Torres wants to be, he really was fu_cking awesome"

To put into perspective-- Torres would need about 7 more seasons with LFC scoring at the same rate as this year every season to approach Rushy's team scoring totals ... and that does not even count the way Rushy would get the goals when it really mattered for the team ...

Not only were Rangers soundly gubbed, they disgrace themselves in front of the world.

A Zenit fan stabbed in the back AT the stadium, a big screen malfunctions so Rangers supporters pelt the technical staff working to fix it with bottles until they walk off the job. Then they pelt the police with bottles and objects as they're told to calm down and stop attacking people. Riots break out and last well into the night, where Rangers fans clash constantly with riot police and smash up cars in the middle of the street whilst pissing everywhere and shouting racial obscenities and anyone who wasn't a white anglo-saxon Protestant. People of Manchester went into the town to soak up atmosphere and were attacked, or left before they got that close because of the repulsive anti-Catholic songs heard throughout the area.

You'd think someone at Fox was trying to cover it up what with the ridiculous article on here which basically says "fans clash" instead of Rangers fans clash with police.

Here's a load of proof for you all to watch. Celtic bring 80 000 fans to Seville for the UEFA Cup final, not a single arrest, FIFA and UEFA award them the Fair Play awards for their "fantastic and well behaved support". Rangers fans make the same game 5 years later in Manchester and you get this:

Wcdbf4

That's of them fighting with police and each other.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVJn
WsM2D_k

That's how they behave when a camera is on them and an example of the police presence needed merely to protect camera crews. Look at the state they left t

The 22-year-old has attracted interest from the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid, but insists he wants to remain in north London.

"We're at the end of our discussions," Clichy told France Football's website. "Everything's going well because my intention is clear: I want to stay at Arsenal.

"I would love to have a career here like Patrick Vieira or Thierry Henry, to stay many years at Arsenal and leave my mark on the club.

Whats this another player threatening not to quit.

Congrats to Zenit worthy champion. I wasn't too surprised of the outcome look what they did to Bayern Munich.

Dammit, you've been warned once, Jay. NO MORE POSITIVE NEWS ABOUT ARSENAL. And yet here you go posting about Adebayor rubbishing reports of his departures (not that he's any good anyway) and Clichy spurning other clubs to sign a new contract. And no, we don't want to hear about Hleb staying either, OK? The rest of us have been patient but if you keep up this garbage, Bobby will be forced to ban you from blog. Doom and gloom -- don't deviate from the script, Mr. Alves. ;-)

craigy,

Personally, I wouldn't have him on a list of the top three United players I've seen, but I know many Mancs who would put him there. I'd love to see that bicycle kick goal. He was an amazing athlete.

TH,

Advocaat's comments seem to indciate that it is a decision based on fan antipathy towards black players. F365 mocked his comments, which basically amounted to shrugging his shoulders about it, in their weekly verbals. FWIW, Zenit was the much better team even if their fans' stance is offensive. I wonder what UEFA will do if there's racist chanting at next year's Champion's League matches . . .

Ah, so, St. Peters is nother West Virginia. Amazing that a city almost inihlated by naazism and racism is the one encouraging racism.

Rushy wasn't a sheep he was a Taffy.
Dalgliesh was a Jock
Any Irishman is a Paddy although not all Ulstermen are Irishmen.

As a Rangers fan and supporter there is a great deal to be proud of and appreciate including the style of play and the players at hand in this years UEFA Cup tournement.

As a Rangers fan and supporter there is a great deal to be dissapointed with regarding the behaviour of a large group of fans and their unnacceptabel behaviour. Boors are Boors and even more so when they are liqoured up.

By no means was it the majority buit it doesn't take a majority does it?

So who do we condemn more? Rangers for the ridiculous behaviour or Zenit for their Rascist practices?
When you look around the world are there any other teams/clubs/nations that conduct racially biased policies?

(I heard this comment from a Scot with whom I was watching the game, "Looks like those boys (ranger fans rioting)could use some religion." I thought it was funny he being a Celtic fan and all.)

Ursus: a bit of hasty editting done somewhere me thinks lol as it was defo two Scots and a Welshman only. Minor details eh?

If you want to see the class that did Brian Clough's Notts Forest 5-0 with Barnes et al, it turns up on ebay from time to time. There's a fan in pool who flogs copies of the match, which so far has failed to surface on any official disc.

As for overseas players or foreigners, there have been many at the club over the years and from 20 plus countries. Ask away if you are curious.

Otherwise, Leeds face another year in league 1, if they lose today. 2-1 to Carlisle away is a hurdle and a half to overcome.
I am off fishing next week and hopefully get into some good walleye, perch, crappie and jack. Be nice to listen to the loons after a long winter.

You know, I was just thinking, DaMarcus Beasley could have made a huge difference in that UEFA Cup final. Rangers with his pace on the outside could have really had a different dynamic. Injuries really suck sometime.

Also, I'm headed to Las Vegas this weekend - anyone know a sportsbook that lets you bet on Futbol? I tried to find one last time I was there but no dice. I'd like to get some action down on the Champs league final, and am not into internet gambling (especially with the recent online sanctions against US gamblers).

Davard try the Orleans. You may want to call the Crown & Anchor or go there for a pint and ask someone.

RF,

I was supposed to head out on Sunday to the Territories but there's still ice on the bloody lake. Hitting a walleye lake during the first week of June.

Hope you have good luck reeling them in!

AG: There is still ice on Lake Winnipeg too where I go channel cat fishing in June thru July. Water temps up on the lake are only at 41F, but the Red River is warming up and is 49F so folks are getting some big walleyes right above Lockport.

Leeds win 2-0 away at Carlisle and make the playoff final for a place back in the Championship.

Bobby: what's your reaction to the sad news about Tommy Burns?
On a brighter note maybe Gretna will be saved. I do hope so as I hate to see clubs disappear.

Sad to see Rui Costa call it quits. Dude was incredible. Lots of fun to watch. Between the '02 WC and the EURO '04, he was simply amazing. Had vision like I've never seen before, or since.

At least he went out the right way, with Benfica
