Craigy_f – 1. Your comment (on Friday) about the ‘top teams’ wanting the ties at this stage of the FA Cup to be ‘easy (pardon my paraphrasing) was spot on. When do you think this kind of thinking emerged?
2. So which two Serie A games did you watch, your thoughts.
3. I’ve seen stuff questioning whether the Tykes can actually claim to be ‘giant-killers” in the FA Cup sense – thoughts?
4. No matter the draw permutations, do you see a final involving two Premier League sides?
5. Do you see the same disdain in other leagues for the domestic cups that seems to exist in the Premier League?
6. When was the last time a midfielder scored 30 goals for a English top flight team?
7. As an analyst on a nationally broadcast TV show do you get invited to many games?
8 Is the number of Premier League clubs left in the FA Cup indicative of: Lack of skill gap in the Leagues, Lack of desire to win it amongst the Premier League teams, The Magic Of The FA Cup, A.N. Other.

Bobby –1. I think it has  come about perhaps as a distorted sense of entitlement based on the ever increasing amount of money that comes the way of Premiership teams.
2. Juventus vs. Roma and Genoa vs. Sampdoria. The derby was the most enjoyable for me. Even though it was scoreless until late in the game there were chances and every time Cassano got the ball you felt that something great might happen. He is a fantastic talent – pity that he is such a nutter.
3. Barnsley deserves the moniker after Saturday’s display.
4. If I had to bet on it yes. But I hope not. I would like to see WBA make it.
5. I think a lot of the other leagues are worse in terms of their domestic cup competitions. Many Coppa Italia matches are played in front of ridiculously small crowds and the two leg final in midweek hardly helps.
Copa del Rey is a bit better but from what I have seen weakened teams being fielded is common place and again scheduling on midweek days does not give it much prominence. Real Madrid hasn’t won the cup since 1993 and Barcelona since 1998 so that probably tells you something about the priority.
The Germans and the French seem to take their cup competitions a bit more seriously and it still has some importance in Scotland. I would suggest that the competition started to be devalued in England when the European Cup Winners Cup was scrapped, and shortly after Manchester United opted for a trip to Brazil.

However as a footnote the FA website had the following piece up on Monday – “The weekend's eight FA Cup Fifth Round ties attracted 248,795 fans, producing an average of 31,099 per tie. This is the highest since 1981, when the average for the completed round was 32,053. In that year the clubs drawn at home were Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Peterborough, Southampton, Tottenham and Wolves”.

6. I can’t think of one - particularly if you are talking league goals. You would have to go back to years to the days of inside forwards who you could argue would be today’s midfielders. In that case it might by the late Dennis Violet for Manchester United in the late 50s when he scored 32 goals. If it goals in all competitions then Matthew Le Tissier would probably be the answer in the mid nineties.

7. No.

8. Fear of negatively impacting on their Premiership position and sometimes the luck of the draw with top flight teams going head-to-head.

LGB or EGB1. Do you think Rafa is gone at the end of this year?
2. If so, who’s an ideal replacement?
3. Also, whether it’s Rafa or a new gaffer, where does Liverpool need to strengthen?
4. Where you at all surprised at the result by Liverpool v Barnsley?
5. Have you seen a more under-achieving team than this? In any sport for that matter?

Bobby –1. It is pretty close to the Topic of the Week question so I will keep my powder dry.
2. You need to see who is available - to early to tell.
3. Covered last week and I believe Redfan2000 reposted.
4. Yes.
5. Lots of them – your expectations are higher than mine.

Footiefan - Why didn't Gallas get punished? He clearly made contact with Nani. Doesn't send out a bad message that you can kick someone from behind and get away with it?

Bobby – JayAlves has provided a pretty good summary of the FA’s position on it. When I saw the incident I was sure he was going to get sent off.

Craigy_f Creative players for Inter - just Figo - you've got to be joking
Pele, Stankovic, Jiminez. Right about Ibrahimovic, likes to come deep and create.
Cesar is having a good season.

Bobby – Can you see Mancini fielding Pele and Jiminez in a Champions league match against Liverpool? Same comment is probably just as applicable to Cesar. As for Stankovic I haven’t seen much in the way of creativity out of him for at least the last two seasons. Very good player but very little in way of flair anymore.

RINGO - Ron Harris against Cristiano Ronaldo. Who comes out on top? A) On the pitch. B) In a back alley.

Bobby – On the pitch Chopper. In a back alley Ronaldo – because he can run quicker.

Henry14 - Q1 Where would you rate Ronaldo in terms of trophies and individual accomplishments in the list of all time greats?
Q2 Spurs v Chelsea who will win?
Q3 Is the Barnsley result the biggest Cup shock in this Millenium?

Bobby – Q1. Close to the top ten all time as a player – I don’t know how to rate a player in terms of trophies. He would be a shoe-in to the top ten if he had played more seasons during his prime years. By the time he hit 23 he had a lot of miles on him and a body that was breaking down.
Q2 – Tune in Friday and I might hazard a guess.
3. No – I think Shrewsbury knocking Everton out in 2003 was a bigger shock.

Gregz - What is your thoughts on the commentating of Ray Hudson? A bit of an acquired taste isn't he.

Bobby – An acquired taste is a good way of putting it.

Gunner44 - You got all of today’s prediction wrong except Roma/Madrid hope it's the same for the Arsenal-Milan game tmrw.

Bobby – That’s fine but the picks were over the two legs not the first leg. I may be wrong in all of them after two legs but at least give me a chance!

African_Footballer_of_the_Year - The proposed transfer of Daniel Cousin from Glasgow Rangers to Fulham that was agreed on January 22nd is still awaiting FIFA aproval. What gives? Is it really that complicated of a question that it takes nearly a month to make a ruling?

Bobby – I had read someplace that FIFA was awaiting documentation from Fulham and it only arrived at the end of last week. I don’t think they are going to make a decision without having all the right forms filled out.

Bobby:
It’s a shame you are not on FSC during the week to give us your thoughts on the UCL matches on the same day.

Were you more surprised with Liverpool yesterday, or more disappointed with Inter? They almost held on with 10 men, but Nils Liedholm always used to say that “with 10 you play better”. 36% percent possession and not a single shot anywhere near Reina was bad. Also I think losing Cordoba in the 75th hurt them more than when Materazzi saw red. Now it will come down to who scores first in the second leg.

Is Chelsea’s 0-0 result as good as Grant is making it sound? I think it’s a very dangerous result, and I don’t understand why a manager would rest players in a UCL 1st leg in the knockout stages. Is Grant a genius or is he in over his head?

I enjoyed the Roma-Real game, very entertaining. The result could’ve been anything, a very open game. At least it will ensure an interesting second leg, and if Real have Sneijder and Robinho back, Roma will have to be at their very best to get through.

Today’s trivia:
Which starting player in the Arsenal-Milan match once played for the other team? This may be an easy one for most.

It is so tough to be a Liverpool fan... watching Leiva float around, seeing every Gerrard effort in the first half be dealt with by the first defender, just knowing that Inter would hit us on the break. Mascherano was excellent as usual but really didn't have enough to do defensively, and he'll never be the attacker that Gerrard or even Alonso can be. Which brings me back to Leiva's inclusion: has Alonso's form dipped that severely, or was it the staples above his eye that kept him out?

Bobby, can you shed any light on selection decisions? Not just Rafa's (who is pretty much inexplicable), but any manager's. Is it all about who has the best form on the training ground? Is it all about fitness? Is it usually a tactical decision based on exploiting your opponent? Because I can't for the life of me see what Benitez sees in Lucas.

Hi LGB, I just don't see Lucas contributing much, compared to what Alonso can do. I know he's got a wallop on the eye and his form hasn't been the same since his injury, but I struggle to believe he wouldn't have done more to feed Gerrard, Babel, et al. while still providing defensive assistance to Javier.

For me the best player in the game was Zanetti. He was all over the place all game trying to do everything. Really cant see Pool losing the tie up 2-0 would take a serious melt down in the second leg.

As for the real important game today:

"Bacary Sagna is back so are Gael Clichy, Mathieu Flamini and Emmanuel Adebayor," said Wenger at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Thats a pretty huge boost but it still looks like Eboue will be playing. Denilson and Walcott will be on the bench most likely so maybe Wenger will give him the hook after the first half if he can manage not to get a red by then being wound up by a guy like Gattuso.

And in other news Demento is still demented. You would think he would be concetrating on the CL tie against Lyon but he still finds time to accusse the FA of giving Arsenal Special treatment.

"What I will say is that there's one law for Arsenal and another for everyone else," said Fergie. "Or a different rule.
"There could have been quite a few players sent off from their team."

Classy guy.

When starting off at home in these ties, it is vital not to concede an away goal. Liverpool owned the midfield yesterday especially when Inter played the middle 30mins with 3 midfielders, Cruz and Ibra were completely cut off. Viera was understandably not up to speed. If Inter get a goal in the first half in the return leg, it will become tricky for Liverpool. However if Liverpool manage a goal, Inter will need four, and then it will be a completely different story. Inter will probably be missing Cordoba, the only one who can really keep up with Torres, who is lethal on the break.
I guess Liverpool (and Rafa) aren’t as bad as the media made them out to be, but they’re not through yet, as the media is making them out to be. Only in the English media can a team and manager, go from great to awful and back to great, or vice versa, in the same month. Déjà vu all over again.

Truer words never spoken, VVV. A great and fully deserved result for Liverpool. That tie is not over, though. A quick question for the scousers -- were you scratching your heads when Rafa took off Babel and brought on Pennant?

Shame on you. Don't you recognize the hand of David Dein in protecting those dirty, cheating foreigners . . . um, hold on a sec, who's our conspirator at the FA again?

2-0 and I'm pissed. Why, you ask? Players are saying that they felt the need to play up to the opposition. It's as if they save up great performances only for Europe. Every Liverpool player except for Aurelio played great and it angers me that they can't play as well on a more consistent basis.

That said, what an immense performance from Kuyt. And I'm not even considering his goal which was lucky. One play that sticks in my head and would provide a good clip for any of you youth coaches is when he tracked back to steal the ball from Inter in the center circle when a break looked to be on, immediately burst on a lengthy overlap run on the right flank to receive the ball in the acres of space. Just an incredibly intelligent play from the always hard-working Kuyt. Hopefully, his goals from the last two games will give him the confidence to play better in front of goal. I'm ashamed that I fell for the hyperbolic statements from him.

To add what a couple of you said, I went to the Liverpool website this morning and could not believe the complete 180 in rhetoric from the clowns on the message boards. There are some fickle people out there.

vvv - Grant is just trying to spin a bad result into a good one.
Don't know if there are any stats to prove it one way or the other ,but I always think a 0-0 in the first leg is a better result for the home team.

And yes ,Grant is in over his head ,and I'll say the same at the end of the season no matter what happens.

T2-Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that Alonso is a fantastic player for us! I just think we need to give Lucas a shot especially since he seems to be doing a job for us. Plus, like you said, Alonso is coming off that injury and may need some time to get back into things.

VVV-Thats the way of the English media...and some of its fans.

Alberta-I'm always scratching my head when Babel is taken off because it seems he is contributing in every game, more so than most, and he is always the one to give way. Still though, Pennant was involved in both goals so can't complain too much.

Verbal-I know exactly the play you are talking about because I was thinking of the same exact thing. I will say though that Kuyt still has some games to go before I believe he's back to his "best". He really has been awful at times this season.

As for the complete 180's on LFC.tv...what did you expect? People have been coming up with non-sense this whole season, did you really expect it to stop?

bobby i can never seem to post on here but I got in today so here goes hope you can respond to my comments.

1. I do not believe cristiano ronaldo is the best player in the world not even close. heres why he has not pulled of any good performances in big situations or against big teams on club level or international level. A hattrick against a rubbish side like newcastle untd. this season is not good enough for me. Last season he was non existent in the Milan game nowhere to be found while kAKA(TRUE WORLD CLASS PLAYER)shone brightly. This season in games against the top four he disappeared as usual and in the spurs game where was he. He cant handle the pressure and it is obvious. dont get me wrong he is a quality player with the POTENTIAL to be the worlds greatest.

What is your opinion of jack warner. I live in antigua and he has a bad name here because of a scandal with chet greene. and for some reason this guy still holds a big position in FIFA. He and Blatter need to go. A con artist and someone who has never played football in their life are running the worlds greatest game what a shame.

Heres a few comments about liverpool tell me your opinion.

1. You might be right about crouch he doesnt show up against the big teams in the big situations. for me the jury is still out on him though.

2. Aurellio and arbeloa are absolute rubbish and need to go along with sebastion leto (who no one saw again after the marseille disaster) kewell kuyt voronin and maybe penant. Carragher has also been very shakey this season I have lost a bit of faith in him I trust Hyypia more he has been more consistent in the center back position. every body else not mentioned I believe deserves a chance including the manager should stay not enough quality on the bench in my opinion Rafa has made same really dumb buys if u ask me.(just stop the damn rotation) By the way I am a liverpool fan

Liverpool boards are full of kids most days with little knowledge or sense. You have to spend time there to get to know the real fans like Lemmo and Equinox among many others.
Fickle they are for sure though most of them do not know the meaning of the word.

I am interested to echo one question asked above Bobby: what was your impression of the LFC/Inter match, in a paragraph?

Aldo
I totally agree with you, Aurelio should be on the subs bench at best. Useless and his inclusion has only unsettled Riise who is way better and has as good a left foot as anyone in the team.
Leiva is a Brazil under 21 captain and very good going forward. He has much potential and looks way better than Sissoko offensively.

Subbing Pennant for Babel is mind boggling. Babel on the left and Pennant on the right, but the only thing I can say about yesterday is that we ended up with Kuyt, Torres and Crouch on. We won and so.....

Ringo,
I agree – starting at home is a slight disadvantage, but if you don’t concede an away goal in the first leg, including 0-0, you are not forced to go on the road and get a result. Chelsea now have to score at home and be very careful at the back.

On to today’s big game. I think the key for Arsenal will be to not give Pirlo any breathing room, and that job may fall to Hleb. If Milan are allowed to constantly get the ball out of defense to Pirlo, to comfortably distribute, then they are very dangerous. When teams crowd the midfield, Pirlo is very good at moving around and out wide (usually to the right), but he struggles against man marking. Again the key for Arsenal is not to concede any goals – Milan know that a defeat isn’t a disaster, but getting a goal would allow them to take chances if necessary in the return leg. The key for Milan will be to absorb the initial onslaught and then control the tempo of the game and get some scoring opportunities. Easier said than done, but there isn’t a team around better at it than Milan. I have a sneaking su####ion that Pato will start, to give Milan that counter attacking more so than with Gila.

Lyon are another under performing team of late, as were Schalke and Liverpool going into yesterday’s games. I’m sure Man Utd aren’t taking them lightly, but they may still be in for a rude awakening in Lyon.

Seville will be happy to leave Turkey with a draw – Fenerbache know that their strength is playing in front of their ‘not so hospitable’ fans, and that they have to go for the jugular today to have any chance of making it through – this one could be very entertaining. Same thing with Celtic – their strength is at home and they have to get something out of today’s match, and absolutely not concede goals.

My only prediction - no away wins today either.

"What I will say is that there's one law for Arsenal and another for everyone else," said Fergie. "Or a different rule.
"There could have been quite a few players sent off from their team."

What a massive hypocrite. So many people call Wenger a hypocrite but Fergie beats him hands down. Time and time again this season Fergie has whined and whined and whined about stuff that his own team commits all the time and routinely gets away with.

Yeah, Gallas was lucky to get off without a punishment. And what about all the unpunished fouls committed by United throughout the game, esp. in the first half? Arsenal players were getting kicked all over the park yet no yellow cards came out. In the 2nd half Arsenal players started fighting back, the yellow cards started to fly. What about Rooney's blatant handball? Nani's kick to Hoyte and his attempted headbutt to Gallas? Darren Fletcher, Wayne Rooney and Anderson all committed off the ball incidents as bad as the Gallas incident. One foul by Rio Ferdinand would've been an easy red card if the game had not been at OT and the ref had unbiased eyes. But the Man United-baised media campaign waged by Sky Sports shows only the Gallas kick ad nauseum.

It was the same in Manu's game at the Emirates -- Fergie railed about fouls on his players while totally ignoring his players' vicious fouls on Arsenal players. He rants and raves about his precious boy wonder Ronaldo getting kicked all the time yet all his players ever do against teams like Arsenal is kick them all over the park. (Mind you, I'm not complaining at all about

(Mind you, I'm not complaining at all about the Eboue send-off, frankly I wish he'd never put on an Arsenal shirt ever again.)

Wenger has remained mostly silent throughout this season, he's actually complained very little to the press compared to Fergiescum. What a massive blowhard hypocrite.

Yeah, Wenger often complains about fouls committed against his players, he's accused of selective vision but it's Ferguson who does all of this on a routine basis and gets taken seriously by the media. It's the media that has selective vision and fixate on only certain fouls/incidents while totally ignoring others.

And didn't you love the sound of all those noble United fans who had demanded that everyone remain silent to pay tribute to the Busby Babes and then a week later show their true lowlife colors by persistently shouting that vile piece of filth against Wenger loud enuf for the TV audience to hear. Real class act, ManU fans.

Once they were down to 10, Inter set up shop for a 0:0 draw- so getting two goals in the end against one of the best defences in Europe was an accomplishment. And don't forget it could easily have been three, counting the non-call on Viera's attempt at playing keeper in the area.

But I agree some of the hype is overdone (maybe it is down to shock at the result, given the recent domestic form of both teams ...?!), since an aggregate win for LFC is by no means a done deal.

My question was and remains around the FACT that you have not found a complete nor fully accurate picture in those records you have found. I leave it you to complete and clarify that picture by writing Rick Parry, as you will never be told by anyone here.

leche: How can you expect a network to be psychic about showing games? Who knows who's gonna score, who knows what games will thrill or be borefests?

Given a choice beforehand, I would have opted for Ar5ena1-Milan. As is well known here, I'm no Ar5ena1 fan. But this one had a lot going for it.

And if I'm a network exec, what game is going to pull in the highest overall ratings? The one rather dull game we just watched.

After yesterday's result in Liverpool, this game had all sorts of sub-plots built into it. A let down, to be sure, but networks, like their paying customers, pays their money and takes their chances.

If you're old enough to remember European matchups before the away-goals rule - I'm not - then you must surely admit that games under the old system simply weren't set up to accomodate those who now pay the piper. TV networks. They need a more entertaining brand of football and they need results within a prescribed time frane. The old way didn't accomodate that.

not sure what your on about leche as the Arsenal AC game was exciting. Then again not everyone can appreciate a 0-0 draw. I guess you truly are American as you just rated games in preference by how many goals they had as how entertaining they were as it was impossible for you to watch all 3 at once and rate them against each other.

and as for Eboue that the position hes been playing all year since we got Sagna. He had some great runs today and a dive where he was actually touched and no horrible tackles so for him he had a 10/10 game but no thats not the best XI. Hleb on the right and Rosicky on the left and Eboue on the bench is his best spot.

"Someone on here said earlier that CL games are the games we wait all year for. Really? Can you imagine a whole season of the dreamed-for G14-League football being played the way Ar5ena1-Milan are playing now? It's like watching some sort of formal ballroom dance from the 17th century. Well half time is here and I'm off to watch a lively bit of paint drying."

Here again, conclusive proof that the Internet is a vanity press for the deranged. Obviously, though, it makes sense to not bother learning about the game or appreciating it when you merely use it as a prop to act out on small-minded tribal instincts. No side dish of absurd logic with the fresh, steaming pile of ignorance, unfortunately, as I wanted to hear more about the great gooner conspiracy. I guess it doesn't exist for games that actually matter. lol

leche010,

Setanta won the rights to air the Lyon-United game. I don't think you and I were watching the same "unexciting" draw, though. lol I'll watch the replay tonight and let you know if you missed anything.

As for Eboue, I thought he did well but his reputation of being a diving prat cost him a clear penalty. Now, I'm not sure what Flamini has done to not earn a PK after getting barged by Pirlo in the box at the end of the first half -- perhaps it's another one of those conspir . . . nah, I won't take refuge with the feeble-minded.

Where was I? Right, Eboue must learn to control his temper and suppress his urge to flop right sharpish because Wenger has a fairly ruthless streak with players who provide diminishing returns.

Interesting comments on the Arsenal-Milan game. I watched the second half, and (as a neutral) thought it had its moments. Then again, I watched it in Italian on TLN here in Canada, so maybe that helped!

(... sotto voce ...) actually, I'm not really a neutral ... absolutely nothing against Arsenal, but I'm sort of pulling for Milan ... in hopes of another LFC-Milan final, third-in-four-years rubber match ... but much too early to be thinking such thoughts ... still, can't help wondering what odds the bookies are offering on that final taking place ... (end of fantasy- we now return you to your regular programming ...)

redfan2000:

Still haven't actually gone to the Companies House and the Duo's buyout Offer (on the LSE "Market News") sites I listed, have you?!!

Both the Companies House and the LSE "Market News" sites are repositories for public viewing of required, regulatory-based corporate information.

So forget about what you think you know- try actually going to the sites FIRST, and THEN stating specifically what is incomplete or inaccurate about the information they present.

When those sites clearly state that LFC was a "limited PUBLIC company" prior to 21 June 2007, and that on that date LFC was re-registered as a "limited PRIVATE company"- exactly as the Duo said they intended to do in the buyout offer in February, 2007- I do not need to be told by anyone here, nor to rely on what I "know"- the facts are clear.

So, redfan2000, enough waffling to avoid the facts- what PRECISELY is incomplete or inaccurate about those sites, concerning the corporate status of LFC?

Leche the game wasnt bad and they should have scored, i thought it was more entertaining then lyon (the pub where i went played both), you think that is bad in france yday they played the cheslea game, my brother contemplated shooting himself during the game that is how horrible the game is. Vente vidi vici, im surprised no one answered its Lehmann, but i think he played there one season after winnign the Uefa cup with schalke. Arsenal should have won today but well do the job next week. Any1 here still thinks RVP is not needed, Ade is like drogba, very effective in the league but not so in the champions league, we need a guy who can shoot from 15-20 yards out. Eduardo had a good first season but im not expecting much more, because its his frist season and he played in a poor league we can expect him to play this many games without stopping. We need RVP back!!!! lyon should have won, but they didnt but i feel that they can do the job in the next round. I liked Perrin puttin clerc in, as that would give him 4 midfielders, but clerc could aslo come up as a winger, with govou. What surprised me is that Arsenal played really well defensively, props to senderos who had an amazing game, much like in the 2005-2006 champions elague season. Milan didnt know what to do with the ball when they were in the arsenal half, they lobbed it but it never worked, tried long balls but didnt work. Good game though and i expect a great game in Milan where Ac will have to attack. Hope the result is like the last time we palyed at the san siro

Not sure if I buy your aggregate goals conspiracy Flash.

If the CL really wanted to appease the television fan base they would start by not playing all 4 games at once. I think the games were being played in 3 different time zones today? they could of started games at different times and the crazier soccer fans would of watched allot of back to back soccer. Which is strange though because I use to remember them having earlier start times for games especially in Turkey but I don't think that happened this year even in the group stage. Trying to remember what time the Besiktas Liverpool game was at as I think thats the only game I watched this year where they had the option but I'm pretty sure I was checking the other live scores at the same time so the kickoff was at the same time.

edit: Also looks like Fergies classy move of trying to link Man U with Benzema and unsettled the youth only fueled him to score a goal. Great tactic though I use it when playing Football Manager all the time. For some reason though in a video game the player usually doesn't turn around and dis-miss my interest and say he wants to win with his current club and score on me on top of it.

What a treat of football the last couple of days - some excellent matches, very entertaining - sadly so much open football is very uncommon at the highest level these days.
Hopefully more of the same in a fortnight.

I thought Arsenal-Milan game was a great game. Arsenal out played milan we should have won but couldn't take the chances, Eboue(who by the way bounced back and had a good game), Cesc(who was the best player on the pitch today) and Adebayooo all should have scored. I almost cried when Ade's header hit the bar. Ohhh how the gods of football ve' deserted us.

Looking forward to the return leg. I call it the Italian Job part 4 as we have beaten Roma, Juve, & Inter. But in all 3 games apart from the Juve one Henry was the main actor. But maybe the good record in Italy will do as good.

Bobby I was just messing with you on your predictions. I don't predict the c.l anymore coz it just always full of suprises. I know you'll talk about this on Fri. but I'll just ask coz I might miss the show do you think it's advantage Arsenal coz they didn't concede an away goal? Like Ringo mentioned the home team has to play with the added pressure of not conceding that elusive away goal. And I agree the Away goal should be scrapped.

Arsenal played a great game today, just a dire lack of finishing, which has been the story of Arsenal in recent times. It's obviously not a great result for either team, but given the circumstances, Milan are definately the happier of the two.
The benefit for Arsenal of not conceding an away goal, is that a draw in Milan is good enough for them, Milan have to win - obviously 0-0 would mean penalties. The benefit to Milan of not losing, is that they can be more patient in their approach.

I think a few teams will be doing their math, and some of the return legs won't be quite as open as what we've seen the last couple of days.

Scrapping the away goal rule would mean more ties going to penalties. I'd rather see a team go through on away goals than on penalties - to me it makes more sense and is the lesser of two evils.

OK, if Atleti don't thrash Bolton tomorrow, I think I'll just scream. For the umpteenth time this season.

Ursus-So does this 2-0 win make up for every failure this season to you? And just to clarify where have I done a complete 180?

We lost to Barnsley at home, drew with Luton away and were losing(TWICE!) to Havant & Waterlooville. We've been #### in the league and got destroyed by Chelsea in the League Cup. #### we barely scraped through in the Champions League. How is this team NOT under-achieving?

I really love that you keep coming after me but at least wait until you have something on me, like doing a complete 180. Oh wait....here comes the missing profits...

Although ar5ena1-Milan perked up toward the end, it was hardly football's finest moments. The first half was tedious and ar5ena1 were at their petulant best on and off the pitch. I don't just say so. Henry Winter of the Telegraph ssys so too. Unlike us, he was there.

"Midway through a first half more akin to a chess contest of move and counter-move...".

"Pato neither deserved Flamini's derision, nor the verbal abuse and crude gesticulations from many Arsenal fans behind the Milan dug-out as he hobbled away."

"Arsenal sought every route through to Kalac's goal, even illegal ones. Eboue was cautioned for diving over Marek Jankulovski's challenge. The huge potential that lies in Eboue's feet is let down time after time by the absence of anything between the ears."

The Times of London says this: "Long before that late escape, however, many had given up hope on a drab, flagging contest and of seeing an Arsenal winner. The ground was half-empty when Adebayor missed."

"It was not a beautiful game, but it was certainly one that leaves no illusions about the task ahead."

"As the scoreline suggests, chances were limited and until a late flurry of activity, Maldini came as close as any with a header from a corner by Seedorf. "..a tepid match, otherwise, begging for a goal to bring it to life."

Milan "were very comfortable in the first half and only wobbled slightly when Alessandro Nesta, the central defender, left the field injured in the 49th minute."

Daily Mail headline: "Choked! Wenger faces struggle at San Siro as Milan defence stifles Gunners
