Craigy_f1. Ian Bell - did he see the Spitting Image Mourinho interview on Setanta this weekend? Brilliant! As only Spitting Image can be. Has that show ever made it across the Atlantic?

2. What are your opinions on Mourinho for England? Whom would you hire or England? How's the search going in Scotland?

3. Best and worst refereeing decisions for you this weekend.

4. Any games or results stand out for you?

5. How important is a club's history, particularly with the explosion of global fan support?

6. Arsenal - a wobble or something more?

7. My Carling Cup game will be hotly contested but what about the other three? 8. Has Goughie got his badges? 9. The ACoN - little more than a storm in a teacup for everybody but Pompey? Will you be covering the competition in any depth?

Bobby – 1. Spitting Image was broadcast in Canada for a while – I don’t know about the USA.

2. The question now has an answer …..but from Mourinho not me. I said on the show that I felt Mourinho was not serious about the position and was only using it to stir up interest and a media frenzy. It now looks to be down to Capello.

And although I said last night that I was still not sure who I would pick, the more I think about it, the more I cannot come up with a reason why not Capello. If he isn’t the most successful manager in the world he is dam close (I think his record carries more weight than Fergie’s). But I still have a nagging feeling that it won’t happen.

The campaign to hire Mark McGhee as Scotland’s new boss seems to have generated a lot of momentum. Meanwhile “my choice” Jim Jeffries is no place. McGhee is experienced although I would suggest that he is as likely to bolt to a better club opportunity should an offer come as was McLeish. John Collins of Hibs has also been mentioned but I think he is short on experience.

3. Worst referring decision – allowing Pascal Chimbonda’s goal. Best decision – either of Sonko’s two tackles on Torres.

4. Tayport beat Carnoustie Panmure 5-2 in a Scottish Junior Cup 3rd round replay. Dundee are now tied with Hamilton at the top of the Scottish First Division.

5. A club’s history has always been massively important and it is probably even more important as the game goes global. The marketing people would probably talk about it in terms of branding but that makes it sound far too corporate.

Personally I don’t think you can be considered a fan unless you are intimately aware of your club’s history. History and former heroes help you through the bad times; it gives perspective and reminds you that good times will return. History and past triumphs (even though others may not see some results as triumphs!) keep pulling us back for more.

A Liverpool fan who doesn’t know about Shanks, Yeats, St. John, Keegan or Albert Stubbins isn’t, in my opinion, a fan - they are someone with a passing interest. Dixie Dean and the midfield of the late 60s/early 70s for Everton. Arsenal and Herbert Chapman, Charlie George even Sir Henry Norris. Sir Matt, the Babes, the holy trinity of United. Bell, Lee and Summerbee for City.  Chelsea’s first FA Cup win, Hudson, Osgood and Cooke, the 1955 League winning team.

Every team has their own version – just some are more famous than others, but they all have the same hold on fans, no matter the team.

6. Arsenal is 11 points up on their position after 16 games last year so in the larger context a few drop points still puts them way ahead of last season and they still finished in the top four with relative ease. It is tough stretch of games but I expect them to still be up in the top three come the first week of the New Year.

7. All four games are potential crackers. Everton has a pretty solid record playing West Ham 12 wins and 6 draws in the last 23 matches – Everton could win this one.

Blackburn knocked Arsenal out of the Cup last season and normally plays well against them at Ewood. Wenger will play the youngsters and although Blackburn has only one win in their last six Premiership games I think Blackburn will go through.

Manchester City at home to Spurs? City with an unbelievable home record playing against a side that has only lost once at City in their last 13 visits – 9 wins and 3 draws.

I fancy Spurs to pull off what might be considered an upset. Then we are left with Chelsea vs. Liverpool. In the past I have regularly called for a Liverpool win in cup games between these two but I am going to flip and pick Chelsea.

8. Richard Gough was in charge of Livingstone a while back so I am confident that he has passed his exams.

9. I think the African Cup of Nations impact extends beyond Portsmouth. Chelsea (Essien. Drogba, Kalou), Newcastle (Martins, Abdoulaye Faye, Habib Beye and Geremi), and Arsenal (Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue) for starters.

I read somewhere that United, Manchester City and Aston Villa are the only teams that do not have players who might be picked to play.

I don’t know at this time what sort of level of coverage I will be able to provide.

Neophyte - How would you rate Steve Coppell's performance as manager? Do you see him getting offers to a bigger club maybe a national team staff spot?(I thought playing Hunt more in the middle with Convey back on the left really opened up the pitch for Reading...your thoughts on the Royal's performance).

Bobby - He certainly is not a man that gets overly excited which can be refreshing some weeks. I can’t see him being offered the top job with Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea or even for that matter whether he would even want a job like that.

Once you eliminate these four there is not much left that could be considered to be a significant step up from Reading. I have thought for a while that Coppell would make a good international manager but in the present climate he doesn’t stand a chance with England.

In terms of Reading’s performance against Liverpool it was well overdue and much more like the stuff we saw last season. Doyle and Kitson have to get goals and they have to get them earlier. I would be surprised if Reading gets sucked into the relegation zone come New Year. Twelve or thirteenth seems like a reasonable position for them.

CIAO - It appears the two front runners O'Neill and the "Special One" have both opted out of running to be the next England Manager. From what I know, Klinsmann, Lippi and Capello are all still available. However, as the article you provided for one reason or another indicated that they are not the ideal candidates.

I agree with you on that Ranieri would be an interesting choice but he still is at Juve probably at least until next summer. Martin Jol is also available, but I have not heard his name mentioned for the position. What do you think of him as the next England manager?

Does the FA have to rush to assign a manager? Considering the current limited selection would probably drastically expand in options after the EURO 08, would it not be better for both Scotland and England to wait to select their next managers until after the tournament? Who knows by then Hiddink might be looking for a job. If the England manager were going to be assigned to either Lippi or Capello, who would you prefer to take the position?

Bobby - I’m beginning to think that Martin Jol the martyr is getting a lot more credit for his time at Spurs than his record indicates that he deserves. Yes, the signing of players appears to have been more than a bit dysfunctional but the bottom line is that the Spurs team he left was pretty much in the same position as the Spurs he inherited from Santini.

Spurs were exceptionally entertaining last season and at their best they played some outstanding football. However, they finished in the same position (5th) as the previous season and with fewer points. They had good FA Cup and UEFA Cup runs but there was nothing to show that Jol was up to the England position.

The FA is rushing because of media pressure – no other reason. Without a manger the speculation will grow exponentially until the organization grinds to a standstill.

As for Scotland there is nothing to indicate that waiting for Euro 2008 would make any impact on their choice. Scotland is not short of suitable homegrown candidates.

Given a choice I would go for Capello because he seems to me to be tougher and would not put up with the tabloids’ shenanigans.

Henry14 - q1 Do you think it devalues Scottish football when every time they play a game of any significance they postpone league matches you look at Rangers postpone their match in the weekend when Arsenal has played 4 games in a space of 12days and still need to win their group and their euro qualifying matches.
q2 Your prediction Chelsea vs. Arsenal, Man Utd. Vs. Reds
q3 One word next England coach
q4 Best goalie Casillas, Cech, Buffon, on league stats and form
q5 Top midfielder Pirlo, Gerrard, Xavi

Bobby - 1. Henry14, “every time they play a game of any significance they postpone league matches”. I’ve told you a million times – don’t exaggerate! No it doesn’t devalue the league, absolute nonsense. League games are rescheduled continually in other countries to fit in with European games. A postponement is only another form of rescheduling. Why do Arsenal need to win their group – is qualification not good enough?

2. Why would I predict  games five days before they take place? Lots can happen in five days. Even then you know I don’t spend a lot of time on predictions. I pick and choose normally based on what I think might be a surprise or a bit counter-intuitive.

3. Poor####.

4. Cech but it has nothing to do with form (he’s injured) or league stats (not a valid form of comparison).

5. Three very different players – are you looking for a continuity type player, a bustling and rampaging midfielder or a deep lying playmaker?

DuncanEdwards1) Assuming he loses some of his pace on the wing later in his career, I was wondering what you thought of Cristiano Ronaldo moving to center forward...he's big, strong, has quick feet, passes and lays the ball off well, has an eye for goal and is a good header of the ball...seems like it would work

and 2)Keeping with the Portuguese theme, why is Carlos Queiroz's name not mentioned in connection with the England National team job?...He knows the league, the culture, the language, the players and would surely have the support and assistance of his present boss, Sir Alex...he has also coached at the National level before...don't you think he should at least be considered?

Bobby - If he loses his pace he will likely lose his sharpness at the same time which would certainly affect his effectiveness as a centre forward. Behind the striker – a position he has played – is a position he could excel in .

Queiroz’s record as a number one is poor and is the reason that I think that the only way he will get a sniff at Old Trafford once Fergie goes is as a sacrificial lamb.  Some people are just better 2ICs – yes Mr. McClaren.

Flashman - As for greatest soccer books of all time, Bobby you particularly will know that one book will never be matched in this day and age when media access to players and managers is heavily restricted. That's Hunter Davies' The Glory Game. Re-read it this past summer. Remarkable. No team nowadays would ever grant an independent journalist the sort of access Davies was given by Spurs.  And the players today are just too media savvy, or even cynical, to honestly provide the sort of information he gathered back then.

And Bobby, do you think that the ref overlooked the fact that Pascal Chimbonda was offside and handled the ball as he scored the first goal against Manchester City was a way of making up for some of the brutal calls that have gone against Spurs this season?

Bobby -  I read the book again a couple of years ago and you are right there is no way that book could be written today. Another book that focused on the same era was Eamon Dunphy’s “Only a Game?” – also excellent.

If your Chimbonda explanation helps you sleep better then we will go with it!

Tuoc - Should Arsenal start Jens in goal again? I thought Manuel is an average goalie.

Bobby - On the upside I have to admit that Almunia has surprised me this season. However, I am still not convinced that he is up to the job. Arsenal’s defensive stats are not just down to the goalkeeper but the defense is giving up too many goals compared to Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool. If Lehmann can dump the prima donna (not as I saw written in another blog pre-madonna) then he can still help Arsenal.

Vidic15 - I would put Yugoslavia/Serbia just under Spain as chronic underachievers on the national level (I leave out Croatia because they have been better recently). Yugoslavia has always produced great players but they could never come together when it counted.

They had the talent but seemed to lack the mental quality and mental toughness to win, and I think that same reason is why Serbia didn't qualify for Euro 2008. They got too many draws from teams they should've beaten.

Bobby - I think if you look at the numbers Serbia and England are neck and neck for the biggest fall from grace from pre-World Cup 2006 to Euro 2008.

Gers4Lyfe - Rangers will miss the pace of Beasley and Darcheville for tomorrow's clash with Lyon. It appears your considerations of Celtic and Rangers might be spot on. Who do you see most likely to replace Beasley's spot in the European matches? I'm certain WS will go with the 4-1-4-1 although for this game at Ibrox I would love to see a departure to a 4-4-2 with Boyd and Cousin up front. What are your thoughts?

Bobby - I hate to say it but I am not sure that Rangers have any players left who can provide the pace that Beasley and Darcheville give the team. Beasley, especially, is a player who excels on the counter attack and is very valuable in Europe.

Novo would have been an important player as well but I understand that he is injured. Naismith got good reports from the Stuttgart game so he will probably come into the reckoning. I cannot see Walter Smith starting two up front. Cousin to start most likely with Boyd held in reserve in case a goal is needed perhaps?

Truebluecfc – I have enjoyed the blog for quite awhile and the fantastic articles you put up each week. What are your favorite football books?

Bobby - If you click on this link it will take you to a blog from this time last year that includes some books that I enjoyed in 2006.

To that list I would the following that have either been read or will be in the next few weeks.

“If you’re second you are nothing” by Oliver Holt. A contrast of Bill Shankly and Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Legends of United” by David Meek. A look at United players from the Busby era.

“Arsene Wenger – The Biography” by Xavier Rivoire.

“Jose Mourinho” by Luis Lourenco.

“England Managers – The Toughest Job in Football” by Brian Glanville.

“Love and Blood at the World Cup” by Jamie Trecker.

My favourite book in the past year is an updated reissue. “A Strange Kind of Glory – Sir Matt Busby and Manchester United” by Eamon Dunphy. I read the book about a dozen years ago when it was lent to me. I noticed the reissue and I thought it was even better than I remembered.

I have so far been unable to get my hands on "The Damned United" but I hope to soon.

Missed some posts in the last blog.

I'll happily use injuries as reasoning for a loss when its directly apparent.

Arsenals most consistent striker is RVP. out.
Arsenals 3 most consistent mid fielders this season Cesc, Hleb, Flamini. out.

line up because of injuries: playing Eduardo who hasn't scored in the prem yet and hoping a midfield of Diarra, Gilberto, Rosicky and Eboue can gel in probably the first game the 4 have ever started together to provide the possession the team depends on to not expose their back 4 and goalie.

I'm pretty sure thats a pretty good case for how injuries effected the team. For anyone who watched the game it was apparent also. There was no midfield possession and buildup and Ade's touch was as perplexing as ever.

Injuries are part of the game and Arsenal can play through them but its very different thing when its maybe the 4 most consistent (Toure would make up the 5 most important IMO and why I still fear the African Cup) players all at once. Arsenal survived through Gallas, Ade, Eboue, Lehman, Rosicky, Hleb, Gilberto and even Senderos all missing games at different points in the first 3 months. I'll give any team the benefit of the doubt if they lose while their 3 best mids and first striker are out.

Btw this is from someone who is still convinced that if Cech doesn't suffer a freak injury last season Chelsea probably win the Prem. When the teams are this closely matched the difference honestly can be who gets injured and when in the season it happens.

Bobby,

Brilliant answer for the one word on the England manager!

atleti,

I was going to post that link. Phil Ball is consistently excellent on Soccernet. His book Morbo as well as Tor! have both been ordered for Christmas this year.

Jay,

I quite agree that the absences have hurt Arsenal but I think every club can make that case. Personally, I like our chances with a Drogba-less Chelsea. To me, they are not close to being the same team without him in the side. I'm not sure you could say that with any single player on Arsenal, United, who have missed Rooney and Scholes for long stretches or Liverpool, who have badly missed Agger and Alonso IMHO.

I'm willing to offer the same excuse to any other team also.

For me Drogba and Cech are Chelsea's most important players. Almost to the point theres not a comparable player on Arsenal as important besides maybe how Cesc was playing himself into that level until he was injured.

I think the problem is worse when it compounds itself into one area of the field though. If Chelsea was without Carvalho, Terry and Cech in one game I wouldn't expect them to keep a clean sheet against a capable team.

Liverpool fans always like to point to the Agger injury but its also up to the manager to make up that lose with fielding his best team. The in and out Torres was doing at the start of the season presumably to ease him into the prem was probably too careful. Pretty sure hes proved himself as Liverpool's #1 striker and wont be taking rests from here on out.

As for this weekend Drogba is definitely a huge blow but at the same time I don't think Arsenal are going to fair well if they don't at least get Hleb or Cesc back to stabilize the midfield.

Jay-Torres was injured as well for a couple weeks. As was Gerrard, Alonso, Agger, Pennant, Aurelio, Finnan, and probably a couple other names I am missing.

While we may make up a lot of excuses(Liverpool fans that is) I don't think anyone comes close to matching our injured list for the season so far(out of the Big 4 that is).

And can people quit it with the "Rafa the rotater" ####. It's ridiculous that Benitez gets crucified by the press and in places like this for leaving out Torres for 70 minutes in a draw against Birmingham and Ferguson doesn't get the same treatment when leaving out Ronaldo in the loss againt Bolton. And for the record, Torres (19) has played more than Ronaldo (18) this season despite missing time through injury.

Rotation is an essential part of the game, especially when a team is competing in different competitions.

I don't care who we get next Friday. Part of me wants to see us thump AC Milan yet like Torres I fancy Rafa against any Spanish side and they of all the teams through to the last 16 will, I believe, least want to pit their minds against Rafa.
I am very curious to see how Rafa tackles Chelsea in the Carling. We have a busy few days ahead so lets hope there are no more injuries.

I do think you have to rotate if you are in three or four competitions, but I think the issue with Rafa is that people cannot see what his strategy is (like the Reading game). Also, people wonder if he knows his best XI. I think those are legitimate concerns.

Bobby-

I know you're a football man through and through, but I was just curious about something. A lot of us here, like myself, came late to watching/appreciating "the beautiful game." I know you left Scotland and came to Canada, where Hockey really is the national sport. I was wondering if you, being a Canadian as well as a Scotsman, had a small place in your sporting heart for Hockey, and if so, who you might support, or any fond memories of the sport. The question intrigues me since Hockey transcends pro leagues - it's a nationally ingrained sport, like football is to England/Scotland.

Or perhaps it's simply 100% football for you.

Getz: My thinking about Reading as a one off centres on the starting 11 and the subs selected.
If, I repeat if, the first goal is so key then why not start with a very strong 11 and sub later as we did yesterday?
At Reading simple things like Veronin and not Kewell on the left in front of Riise; Sissoko in the centre and not Gerrard (who started on the right); Hobbs next to Carragher, not Hyppia, and, Benayoun not even a sub, left us lacking balance and any width against a packed midfield.
It was an avoidable failure of tactics from the very outset with team selection in my humble opinion. Rafa made a boo boo or, if you prefer, dropped a clanger. He has done it before and admits it, but what manager has not? SAF did it against Bolton.

Playing your strengths from the subs bench means you will always be chasing games should the oponent score first.
Playing a strong starting line up and getting the goals whilst limiting the oposition will always give the opposition the hardest games.

I am left to wonder what 60 minutes of Kewell and Benayoun running to the bi line would have done to Reading?
Fortunately, normal service was resumed yesterday and I hope Reading will prove to be a one off this season.

Many people have spoken poorly about the Jozy Altidore to Real Madrid rumors. I understand many folks think that he will just sit on the bench and never get any match experience. But I also believe that he will learn so much playing with those caliber players that in reality, it will balance itself out. He has more potential than any other American soccer player ever and not only will a move to a top side like Real Madrid benefit him, but it would be great publicity for soccer in the USA.

Is Rafa in any trouble? Are there any scenarios where he gets sacked (i.e., Liverpool is out of the top four after New Year's)?

@ redfan, I am no tactician, but I looked at Rafa's starting XI against Reading and was baffled. It looked like some strange, fantasy league squad slapped together.

@ D Powell22, I would rather see Jozy go somewhere to play rather than ride pine. SPL, Bundesliga, or even a Championship side.

Bobby thank's for the responses :) Do you know if FSC will be doing the ACoN?

JayALves - football today is the product of it's history. Go read about your club's highs and lows of years gone bye, you may actually enjoy stepping back in time.

Ringo - funny that! I haven't heard that song on the radio for going on ten years. Who do you fancy in the KO stages?

I'm gonna get slammed for this - but who cares!

Gerrard is a master of the dive!
Look at the slo-mo reverse angle and you'll see he drags his right leg into the defender and as soon as contact is made goes down. Subtle and unlikely to be picked up given the position of the ref, the speed of play and the awful lunge. Don't they teach the sliding tackle anymore?

It must be said that it was a stupid challenge, Gerrad was going away from goal on his left foot so it's unlikely he would have scored.

It's also worth noting that had the first incident not occured it's doubtful Marseille would have won the game. They were not particularly good.

Mancini against the waiter would be the best draw for me. Torres & Kuyt v Samuel or Cordoba
Benayoun v Zanetti
Riise v Maicon
Mascherano and Cambiaso going at it
Cruz, Ibra, Suazo or even Crespo against Carragher and Hyppia or Agger.
The poetic draw would be against Anchellotti's men. If that can happen in the first Ko stage?

Wonder who we get in the KO round? A nice warm country wouuld be preferable!

Anyone know when the KO draws for the two European competitions are?

For the damn last time I care about my clubs history I just don't care if they were a defensive side before Wenger. Good on them its been proven many times in all sports that a strong boring defense is always more consistent then free flowing exciting play.

As for those games comparing Ronaldo and Torres you already forgot Ronaldo was out 3 games for the headbutt?

Much as it pains to admit this, after my upbringing, Rangers fully deserved to lose today. An awful performance. Lyon were SO much better technically, their first touch always more decisive and controlling. Rangers looked like they had big springs mounted on their shoe tops, the ball bouncing every which way when they tried to take a pass.

A good run, but with no pop up front, they simply ran out of talent. Barry Ferguson, as always, played his bag off, but when D'Archeville stunningly missed Ferguson's fantastic set-up - a sitter from inside the six that flew over the bar - you knew the #### was up.

Now, of course, they'll probably get drawn against my new best friends - Spurs - in UEFA Cup.

I suffered through Tommy Smyth's commentary with Rangers-Lyon before turning down the volume.

Lyon bossed the game. It will be one of the world's great mysteries if they can hang on to Benzema. Both he and Govou showed why they belong in the French national side.

Rangers looked limited, especially without Beasley to add pace and width.

To anybody that saw the Arsenal game, how did RVP look? I'd watch Setanta's rebroadcast tonight but my son's Christmas concert is utterly unmissable.

COYB - SO WHO WANTS TO DRAW THE BLUES IN THE NEXT ROUND OF THE PLASTIC CUP (OR WHATEVER THE LEAGUE CUP IS CALLED NOWADAYS) 11 on the bounce - nice one David.

The consensus opinion is succint and going to be used as a terrace chant this weekend.

Feed the Yak!

Would the team stay darn sarth in the warmth and wealth or make the trip back home to frozen (gas lamp lit & poor) wastelands of the north, the same fixture is being played Sat in the League.

Best Football Burglary is Druncan Disorderly getting fisty when his home was invaded a while back. Maybe the Liverpool players can hire him as a house minder on their last trip into Europe.

Yakubu whipped his top off to celebrate scoring the winner at Upton park yet I don't see him listed as getting a yellow.
Niell is listed but not Yakubu?
Have the rules changed or the match reports incorrect?

It wont be passing. You really don't have to engross yourself in a team to be a fan. Football isn't the end all of sports either. I follow many teams in many sports. I'm sorry I don't have the time to go back and memorize every past hero and engrain what they did into my memory. Its much easier remembering things that you live and watch and not force them at some fake interest level for the sake of being labeled a true fan. Personally my earliest football memory is watching Baggio blaze it over in 94.... something I don't expect a football fan to know or remember 10-20 years from now. I do enough studying at school the last thing I need to do is turn my hobbies into another pop quiz of trivia.

joe jordan is bit. ching again, (He's an assistant at Pompey)

His cultured opinion (along with that of Avram Grant) is that the ACoN should be moved to the summer to suit European Clubs.
ACon is held in the early part of the year becasue in the summer a place like Ghana the rainfall is 7.8 inches in June; 2 inches in July as opposed to 0.6 inches in Jaunary; 1.1 inches in Feb.(ghanaweb)
Doesn't sound much until you compare DC, no more than 4 inches in any month (weather.com)

What do you think?

Liverpool fans - Confirmation needed. I am doing some preparation for the weekend and I need to check something. I have gone back to the 03/04 season to work out the head2head records of Arsenal, United, Liverpool and Chelsea. It looks to me as if the last time Liverpool got an away point against any of the other three was in 03/04. Since then it looks as if they have lost all 9 matches - is that really the case?

(I do realize that Liverpool is the home side this weekend.)

ZUCO2,

I think the Champions League draw is next Friday.

Jay

There's something to be said for just appreciating the sport in and of itself regardless of the names or colour of the jerseys.

As a Canadian who last saw his team play in the World Cup more than 20 years ago, it's refreshing to approach that tournament as a neutral thrilled by the spectacle and rooting for nothing more than a well-played game.

Personally, my thrill of the year so far was seeing a six-year-old on my U-8 team volley in a ball with his left foot from about 15 yards in an indoor game a couple of weeks ago. He's a great little player and there was no small amount of skill involved, especially since his left is his "weaker" foot.

Bobby, that is correct. I mentioned it either before or after Liv/Ars that Benitez has yet to earn a point at Stamford Bridge, Highbury/Emirates or Old Trafford.

ZUCO2, as I mentioned above the draws for both the UEFA and UCL are next Friday, the 21st.

craigy, unlike Torres, Arbeloa and our own LetsGoBuffalo, I do NOT want to draw Real Madrid. I think Sevilla or AC Milan would be the "best" draw. By "best", I mean least likely to make me pop my hernia. Also, I'm not concerned with the League Cup draw because I have a feeling Liverpool won't make the next round. Good luck to the local (read "non-global") Liverpool team.

work permitting I'm going to do a pre-match for the games Sunday
I'd do a game review of the Big Game on Saturday but It'll probably be easier to read the match preview for tonight.

Someone once said - "no easy games" - I think that time for you lot is now.
We'll get a winnable draw in the first KO round. Although with luck I can actually see the blues in Europe for the second time in twenty odd years...shivers...spine

AG - just as long as some woefully inadequate referee doesn't guff it up (for instance hand out three yellows to one player or something really stupid like that!)

I hope this can be relevant.

The Serie A is boring. The players seem to play like they are always tired. Yes they are technically savy and good strikers, but there seems to be a definite lack in effort. I have to say, that the defense in the Serie A seems terrible.

While on the subject of lack of effort, what is the deal with Clint Dempsy. He seems to be having a lot of success at Fulham, but it is confusing to me. Every time I see him play, he seems to be laboring, or cannot run, I believe that if he was up in position more often, he would receive the ball more often and have better chances at goal.

Bobby, what are your thoughts on that?

davard - I use to attend game in Scotland and I held season tickets for the Winnipeg Jets from the time I arrived in Canada to the time the team left for Phoenix. Since then I have taken no interest in hockey. I have not watched a game in last five years.

wnmf -
What Serie A games have you watched to draw your conclusions?

Dempsey is much better at Craven Cottage - the entire team is better there.
Some games Dempsey's first touch, passing and vision are cack, he wasn't great at Goodison.
Other games he gets into the area at the right time to #### a goal in or play a killer pass - in the Reading game.

WeneedmoreFriedel - We are going to diasgree on this one. I've enjoyed watching Serie A for years and expect to do so for years to come. The ball may not fly from end to end and players may not launch themselves into challenges like the Premiership but I would not mistake that for lack of effort. In Serie A - and most other leagues - the ball is cherished and is only humped away when there are no other options. Poor defences in Italy? It's not the first problem that I would pinpoint in Italy. But I guess it is a case of to each their own.

I think you have to consider that Dempsey started the season very well - that brings with it more attention from opponents - and he is playing on a team that has and continues to struggle. He and Fulham in general are in for a long hard season I think.
