Weekend Preview
Nov 15, 2007 | 7:51PM | report this

In an attempt to make up for last week here is an extended weekend preview.

James Lawton admits he may have got Manchester City wrong.

Rob Hughes on Adu and Altidore.

How Craig Gordon’s summer move to Sunderland has benefited the team he played for as a 12-year-old.

Robert Philip talks to and about Denis Law before the Scotland and Italy game on Saturday. At the end of the article there is a reference to League Internationals that were mentioned on the blog a couple of months ago.

A look back at the last time Italy faced a European qualifying campaign after winning the World Cup.

Seventeen unlucky for Italy

A more measured assessment of the European Union’s free movement of labour. The reason you are hearing British politicians spouting off on the subject is simple - there is no downside for them.

They can take a political popular - but wrongheaded – stance on foreign players that plays well with the punters. Simple reason for the complex problem of failure at the international level – foreign players.

No evidence, no need to hold the FA accountable or the players for that matter. (Remember this is largely the same team that last summer before Germany 2006 was being described as the golden generation – we found out it was more gilded than gold.)

But no matter at the end of the day the politicians know that they can’t do anything about the number of EU nationals playing in England unless the EU grants a total exemption for football and that will not happen.

MLS Cup Final

I have no idea if MLS intentionally scheduled the Cup Final for a weekend that coincided with European and World Cup qualifying but let us give them credit anyway. The Houston Dynamo versus New England Revolution can take centre stage on Sunday with little else in the soccer world battling for attention.

The Rev’s past failures have been well chronicled as has the Dynamo’s attempt to become the first team since DC United to win back-to-back titles. And of course it is a rematch of last season’s final. During regulation time that game was almost completely devoid of any memorable moments and it took two goals within seconds of each other during extra time to bring the match to life.

New England had the better of the Dynamo during the regular with a 1-0 win and a 3-3 draw although Houston did finish two points ahead of the Revolution. New England edged Houston in goals scored (51 to 43) but that was more than reversed when it came to conceding goals. The Rev’s defence let in close to double what the Dynamo did (43-23).

In setting a new regular season record for the fewest goals against Houston was the model of consistency while shutting out the opposition thirteen times. What’s more the Dynamo only let in more than two goals in a game twice and they lost neither one – the aforementioned six goal thriller with New England and a 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake in September.

For New England it was a case that when it rained on their defence it monsooned. They conceded three goals or more  seven times and only came away with a couple of draws. Over half the goals that New England let in during the regular season came in these seven matches which means that over the other twenty three games they averaged less than a goal against per game.

Nine clean sheets also strengthen the argument that perhaps New England are not such a defensive liability as the goals against column might indicate.  New England fans might also look to the Rev’s not yet conceding a post season goal while the Dynamo gave up two to FC Dallas.

New England’s standard 3-5-2 formation gives them the extra man in midfield over Houston’s 4-4-2. However, the game might come down to how well Michael Parkhurst, Jay Heaps and Avery John can handle Nate Jaqua - or Brian Ching if he is fit. Houston peppered the Kansas City defence with crosses last weekend and delivering quality balls from wide positions will be a key for the Dynamo. If New England are to win then they need to cut that supply route and they will also need Sharlie Joseph to dominate the midfield and feed Noonan, Twellman and Ralston.

The longer the game goes without a goal the more likely it is that we will get MLS 2006 part two. Here’s opening for an early goal and a better spectacle than twelve months ago.

Next to European Championship qualifying.

Group A – The group of draws with fifteen of the 46 games so far having finished tied but trips to Switzerland and Austria next summer are now for Poland and Portugal to lose. A home win for Poland would book a place and save them from a potentially awkward trip to Belgrade to play Serbia on Wednesday. Belgium are at a low point as far the national team is concerned – maybe it is due to the foreigners playing in the country – and Poland should get the three points that they need.

Portugal can only make sure of qualifying if they get a better result at home against Armenia than Finland does versus Azerbaijan and Serbia does against Kazakhstan. In all likelihood all three will win meaning that Portugal will still need to beat Finland in Lisbon next Wednesday to guarantee that they progress. There is still the possibility of a two or three way tie for the runners-up spot. Either possibility would be bad news for Portugal as they would lose out to Finland (two-way) and Serbia (three-way).

Group B – Italy failed to qualify for the finals of the European championships in 1984 after winning the World Cup two years before. They need a tie against Scotland on Saturday to make sure history does not repeat itself – with due respect to the Faroe Islands an Italian win at home on Wednesday is a certainty. In theory a draw could also put Scotland through if France would lose to the Ukraine in five days time – not going to happen.

So Scotland have to beat the reigning World Champions in their final game to qualify for their first major championship since 1998. A tall order but given the group that they were drawn into a one game decider is better than any Scots’ fan could have expected.

Scotland’s best chance to get the win that they need? The longer the game stays scoreless (well up to a point) the better it is for Scotland. Italy will become more and more cautious while Scotland should be able to throw more men forward in an attempt to get a precious winner. (Is there a new John Greig ready to do the business?)

Honestly if I was Roberto Donadoni I would be going for the jugular from the start and come out looking for an early goal that would take the Hampden crowd out of the game and set Scotland a target of at least two goals in order to qualify. Are you listening Roberto?

Group C – Greece have already qualified and will be defending the trophy they won in 2004. The other spot is between Norway and Turkey and the Norwegians are two points up withTurkey traveling to Oslo for Saturday’s match.

While Turkey started strongly (12 points from the first four games) and have faded badly the Norwegians have gone at it in reverse. Seven points from the first five matches has become 11 points in the second half. A win for Norway seals the runners-up spot while anything else will take the final outcome to the last round of play on Wednesday. Norway are away to Malta and Turkey are at home to Bosnia Herzegovina so a draw (in Turkey the sides shared four goals) would set the Norwegians up nicely.

Group D - Germany and the Czech Republic are both going to the Alps while four other countries are playing for places and we have no idea what San Marino are playing at.

Group E - There will be a collective holding of breathe in England on Saturday when Russia faces Israel. A Russian win and the English players can book tee times and Steve McClaren can start mailing his CV to former republics of the Soviet Union. Although England needs to rely on Israel for help the English media stands charged with capitulation.  Surely they could wait until death is official.

Croatia only needs a draw in Macedonia although that might be more of a challenge than most realize. Croatia needed two second half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit to Macedonia the first time they played (da Silva with an 88th minute winner) and only Russia with 2-0 and 3-0 wins have handled Macedonia with relative ease.

Group F – Sweden and Spain have almost made it with Northern Ireland and Denmark’s hopes hanging by a gossamer thin thread. Two draws for Spain (home to Sweden then Northern Ireland) will do it while the Swedes need just a single point from their last two matches.

Group G – Romania, along with Croatia, go into the last two rounds as the only two undefeated countries. Romania’s campaign started with a “disappointing” 2-2 home draw with Bulgaria. Disappointing in as much as Romania led 2-0 with eight minutes left. On Saturday Romania travels to Sofia for what fourteen months ago looked like it would be a crucial match. However, two draws against Albania largely put paid to Bulgarian hopes and Holland needs only one point from games against Luxembourg (h) and Belarus (a) in order to join Romania.

COMNEBOL World Cup Qualifying Notes

Argentina v. Bolivia - Javier Zanetti will earn his 116th cap and become Argentina's most capped international if he plays in this match. Bolivia’s last away win in WC qualifying came 14 years ago when they beat Venezuela 7-1. In their last 27 away games Bolivia have picked up only three draws.

Colombia v. Venezuela – It’s almost as if Colombia’s campaign has yet to start. They are unbeaten but have yet to win a game. They have not been scored on but have not scored either.

Peru v. Brazil – Another poor start for Peru who made their last WC appearance in1982. Only one point from their opening two games and they have yet to score a goal (0-0 at home to Paraguay and lost 2-0 to Chile).

Uruguay v. Chile - Both countries consider themselves as legitimate contenders for a top four spot and head-to-head games will be important in the final outcome. In 2006 qualifying Chile won 5 matches but all were against countries that finished in 8th, 9th and the bottom spot.

Paraguay v. Ecuador – Ecuador qualifiers for the last two finals, have made a horrible start, losing 1-0 at home to Venezuela and 5-0 in Brazil. Two veterans have been dropped Ivan Hurtado (145 caps) and right back Ulises de la Cruz (98 caps).

Midweek games - Brazil v. Uruguay, Ecuador v. Peru, Venezuela v. Bolivia, Colombia v. Argentina and Chile v. Paraguay.

Just seen England's team for Austria, what is McCLaren doing picking Lampard and Gerrard, Barry plays well when opicked and gets rewarded with a seat on the bench.

Maybe Parker is right after all.

Bobby - Houston didn't pepper KC with crosses last weekend. They did much more hoofing hopeful balls forward. It took Mullan 80 minutes to put his first decent cross in the KC area. But a nice piece nonetheless. Will you be at the Final?

Any luck on why Scotland wore pink in 1999?

James Lawton gets most things wrong.

I'll be wearing an Italian Jersey on Saturday! I haven't got a Bayern Munich one. I'll also wear Blue and White socks.

I want, need, hope, wish for but ultimately I know the manager is cack and team is largely made up of players with other priorities.

I have to support Uruguay - got a soft spot for them after the Copa and Gargano is a neat player.

Craigy to carry over from the last post

ABC used to do it every year, it was actually one of the only times I could actually catch soccer on one of my five channels when I grew up.

In the past Marcelo Balboa and Rob Stone were two people I can think of off the top of my head who did the game. Since ABC owns ESPN, you can probably expect Wyndalda, Rob Stone will probably sideline report. Possibility one of the champs league guys will do it, but I doubt it.

Also the bus thing I saw today, but I need to work monday so couldn't swing that one.

ALso I guess I am the only one here who likes Bretos.

LGB I'm from Kenya. You probably won't see Kenya become a major force until the gov't stops messing with the game. But it only makes as Kenyan's love football more. But I live in the Twin Cities in MN. Cold as the N. Pole but we still play the game.

For this weekend I'm a huge Italian fan since R. Baggio is a hero to me (I cried when he missed the penaltly in 94), but a part of me is routing for Scotland coz Italy has just pissed me off with all the #### that is going on in the game in their country. So if Scotland win it won't hurt as much as it would have before.

As for England sorry but I hope they get kicked out and miss out. Maybe it will help them put lesser pressure on coaches since they'll realize they are not the greatest nation on earth when it comes to Football.

Rico-I don't hate Max Bretos but he can be annoying...but like Craigy pointed out you can't hate his enthusiasm, even if it is mis-placed at times.

Gunner-Do you cheer for all African nations when they are in the World Cup?

I've been to Minnesota its just like where I'm from...Rochester, New York. I imagine the weather is just a tad different than that in Kenya:)

Bobby-Great article on Adu and Altidore. I loved that Mr. Hughes touched upon the difference in size between the two.

With the way the whole sports world is changing, size is becoming a factor in football now just like it has in almost every other sport. He compared Adu to Pele because they are the same size and with the fact that size is becoming more of a factor you have to wonder if the likes of Pele or Maradonna would be as effective if playing now. Remember I said AS EFFECTIVE, I think they both would still be great players.

I think Altidore is going to be a monster for us in the years to come and can't wait to see him Saturday morning.

Craigy-I said size is becoming more important and it is. Its the same across the board for all physical-team sports.

I never said there were no more good players who weren't tall. And just to be clear, I don't consider 6' players to be small.

I like Max too, anyone who has enthusiasm, is good natured and seems to enjoy his work I like. Same for Smythe and Hudson. And by the way Max's name pronounciation is not that bad and it is getting better. And yes they can be annoying.

I have not read an article yet where Lawton was right. He has good command of the language, too bad he has no command over reason. He is still jabbing Sven over England.

I am a Scotland fan this weekend.

Some positions will never require height, Messi and Tevez convert their small stature to assets and run around taller players. Adu and ALtidore are completely different players, not a good comparison.

why not start altidore? its a friendly, there arent many natural fowards on the roster, there is every reason to start him. altidore is the future forward for the US. Dempsey is better on the right of midfield and donavan should play behind or next to altidore. what other option is there?

RE: FOREIGN PLAYERS

I am sick of hearing this, over and over again in england.

the truth is, If england does not qualify for euro2008, it's not because of Tevez, T. Henry and F. Torres. It's because the FA keep hiring bad managers.

Give this england team to Molinho, he will win both the world cup and euro cup in less than 2 years. SO, ENGLISH MEDIA, STOP THIS XENOPHOBIC CAMPAIGN.

The French team has recently had success in international football, but yet when you look at their league, it's full of Africans. Altough I have to admin that most of those Africans have dual citizenship wich makes them eligible to play for france, like Kanoute (mali/france). May be england should look into handing citizenship to these players, they would gladly accept it.

But telling me that Andy Johnson should be the main striker for Arsenal, just because he is english, it's just absurd. If there is a good english player out there thinking he lost oppt. because of foreign players, you have to wonder about his competitive spirit. If you are good, you should compete in open market. You should not seek protection in order to compete.

The english league just signed a lucrative contract, that pays more than the Campions League itself. why do you think is the reason? Most english teams would rather survive relagation battle than making a run in the champions league.

Speaking of english team, tell me why a team with telent like Gerrard (Champions league winner), Rooney, Lampard, Terry, Joe Cole, failed to beat Macedonia AT HOME?

RE: MLS Cup. ABC has held the rights since inception, I believe.
Look for O'Brien, Eric Nowitall, Tommy Smith, Alan Hudson, Rob Stone, etc.
Before WC '06 O'Brien had never done a game. He's gotten better but still over hypes when it is not warranted.
ABC/ESPN have a much better technical presentation than FSC.

RE:Bretos/Smith/Hudson- What I don't like in a broadcaster is over selling, over hyping any event. MB does it all the time.
So does Ray Hudson but RH is so over the top and hilarious. He's so bad he's good. He's entertaining. I don't know why I let MB annoy me. Probably because MB does it w/o much character.

Play by play announcers are supposed to be an adjunct to the game. MB gets in the way of the game too often and needs a good producer in his ear to reign him in.
"Back of the onion bag" Smith is funny and knows the game very well like Hudson and unlike MB.

RE:Adu/Jozy piece- Good piece but they are totally different players at different positions. I'll take it though when a British sportswriter (besides Bobby) writes a positive piece on American footballers.
So there's interest from Real with Jozy? Someone in Europe will make a run for him.

Forza Azzuri! (Sorry Bobby) and Let's hope the US can stick it to SA and Bradley starts Adu and Jozy.

Szetela started & played 65 minutes for Racing in their most recent Copa del Rey game against Malaga (2nd division club). It ended 0-0, so they'll have play again, this time at Santander. Good performances in the Copa will increase his chances of earning a spot on the bench for Liga games. He's still a young guy. 20 or 21, I think.

Well he was in the U20 this summer, so probably only 20.

Gongatore, I agree and disagree about FSC and ESPN/ABC. I think ESPN ABC has a bigger budget so it looks more polished, but I get so fustrated with the dumbing down of the game especially at the 06 world cup. The MLS coverage on ESPN they also like to cut away from the game for useless ####. This is soccer there are no breaks we don't need filler in between timeouts.

I think they do a good job on the champs league mainly because it is a live feed, so they have no control over where the camera goes, which in my opinion is a good thing.

Bobby - have you ever announced a game. And are there or will there ever be any plans in the future for you to do so?

Yeah, I am rooting for them, not sure if you caught it but I was one of those faithful 10000 watching the semi final.

I also have small connections with the team, that makes me root for them a little more. 1 they are the hometeam so that goes without saying. 2 the inagural year of the MLS I knew the assistant coach Ron McKeachen, who was from the town next to mine, and now coaches skidmore. Last year I played in a coed indoor team with a former Rev reserve player who was good friends with Dempsey. I got a chance to meet him, and really liked him, so when he was on the team I was really rooting for him. And last I used to go to a soccer camp run by Paul Mariner, who is now the assistant coach with the Revs. I haven't gotten a chance to say hi to him yet, but I am hoping I will be able to, and joke about when he is going to call my agent and put me on the team.

I also just realized I sounded like I am trying to name drop, I am not, just trying to give connections to that team, and why I am rooting for them.

I also think Steve Nicol would be an excellent choice as our National Team Coach.

Gongatore I think you hit the nail on the head. In the cases of MB and DO'B they either over-hype the little things or the big things they just never catch onto.

For example, when a good pass/run is made you almost never hear about it. You never hear about off the ball stuff either.

You will only hear about "potential" scoring chances.

Its just hard to listen to them when you have knowledgeable broadcasters that cover the PL.

As for the coverage...FSC's is so much better than ABC's. ABC/ESPN is so ridiculous with their camera angles and "filler" that I had to change the channel when watching the EC Final game this year. I hate how they try to "Americanize" everything instead of just letting the sport speak for itself.

Thanks for the preview, Mr. McMahon. As an Italian, I hope we crush your squad. Nothing personal, I wanted Scotland in the #2 slot for the group, but not at the expense of Italy.

Regarding the broadcasting...

Americans broadcast the football like they broadcast NFL games. Constantly talking with the horrid "man on the field" cuts. I cannot stand it. It is a miserable way to watch the games. One of the best things about Sky's EPL broadcast (and rebroadcasts) is the fact the commentators (mostly) get it right by letting the silence ring for a bit!

ABC's World Cup final broadcast was a joke.

Watch NFL games on television, they broadcast as if they were on radio. It is unwatchable. It is honestly one of the reasons I cannot watch a single NFL game through, but I can sit my rear down on a bar stool at 7 a.m. in the morning and watch 6 to 7 hours of EPL without flinching. I do not feel like I am being lectured by the broadcasters.

Gelz, Gongatore, I mentioned that on my blog when I was writing. It really pissed me off. When the 06 World Cup happend I wanted to blame it on the announcing of people like Marcelo Balboa, whom I had actually liked in the past.

But I realized he was probably told by his producers to dumb the game down and explain every single foul that really needed no explanation. I also think my taste in announcers is much better because I get to listen to the EPL guys every weekend.

It even changed my view of Alan Smyth, and the other guy, while I still like them, I realized they aren't as good as I thought.

Actually I have realized from reading the sports guy, and watching some of the MLB playoffs, it really isn't just soccer has horrible commentators.

During the regular season the Red Sox are broadcast on NESN(New England Sports Network) and those guys are great, and you kinda take them for granted. That is until TBS started covering it with a couple of ####, who just wouldn't shut up. Not only that but TBS felt obliged to accompany a little graphic showing how far a player was leading on 1st base. What a pointless thing to show, I don't care if he is 6.2 feet away from first base. I can see for myself, it is so unnecessary!

The topic of commentators is something that is a huge pet peeve of mine and I can go on and on about that!!

Rico it bugs us all to no end. As Getz said watching an American football game is simply impossible, I haven't done it in years, one or two plays and the channel is changed.

The announcer I really like is the guy who does the Milan in Europe games by himself for FSC.

Tonight is the best FSC report show in my book, when Bobby does the International preview.

As I read these article each day it frustrate me more and more as to why England and other so call world power in football are suffering. We live in a world where big country such as England demands globalization, yet they ask that the number of foreign players should be reduce in order for the development of football at a grass root stage. Well globalization should not only benefit the big countries, it should be to the benefit of all. The increase influxes of foreign players are just a part of globalization and also benefit youth programs for all parties involves. Players coming in to bigger countries, better life style, while the grass root program benefit from players who are naturally gifted. The England youth 17 & 21 sides have done well over the years and continue to do well, stop blaming a system that benefit the small man as well as the big.

Come on Italy, draw with Scotland and let Ukraine beat France. That way, Italia and Scotland would be in the finals!

My latest predictions:

Serbia 1-1 Kazakhstan
Finland 3-0 Azerbaidjan
Portugal 2-0 Armenia
Poland 3-1 Belgium
Lithunia 0-2 Ukraine
Scotland 1-1 Italy
Moldova 1-1 Hungary
Norway 0-2 Turkey
Greece 2-0 Malta
Czech R. 2-1 Slovakia
Germany 3-1 Cyprus
Wales 1-2 Ireland
Macedonia 0-1 Croatia
Israel 1-1 Russia
Andorra 0-2 Estonia
Spain 2-1 Sweden
N.Ireland 0-0 Danemark
Latvia 1-0 Liechtenstein
Bulgaria 1-1 Romania
Albania 2-1 Belarus
Holland 3-1 Luxembourg

Imagine what kind of a shock it would be if France, England, Italy or even Portugal would fail to qualify!

It's not gonna be me! Anyway, I defend my predictions. But I don't think that Azerbaidajan can beat Finland or that Israel can beat Russia. We shall see! It's gonna be exiting!

What about if we just predict whether England qualifies or not?

Over the years, I think England has been a lucky team and I don't like lucky teams. England might qualify but they would need many help from Israel and Croatia as well. But I don't think they deserve to qualify.

apad03 - I like Dempsey playing in a central position and I think his best position is just behind a main striker(s). Friendlies are for experimenting and giving younger players a chance (amongst other things) so there is no reason that I can see for not to give Jozy a shot.

therealrico - I have never attempted play-by-play (well not since the age of 10 while playing three goals and in). I did some colour commentary for locally produced Canadian Soccer League games but that was over 15 years ago. The subject has never come up at FSWC or FSC.

So just what is Freddy Adu's best position?
When they find it ,keep him there and build the rest of the team around him.
Not a bad game for a friendly ,better than yesterday's non-event anyway.

Getting nervous yet Bobby?
