Tony Cascarino on players who have played for Sir Alex Ferguson and gone on to management.
Wednesday marked the 150th anniversary of the founding in Sheffield of the world’s first football team. Three years later another team was formed and likely 30 seconds later there was the first disagreement over a referee’s decision.
The new Canadian Soccer Association President hopes to turn the situation around in few months. He may hope that but his first public statement makes it sound like the CSA has another leader who believes that rearranging the deck chairs will save the ship. A few years is a more realistic estimate and that is only with a charismatic leader who can speak to a grander vision. The new President apparently has a medical background; next step a priest?
Two contrasting performances in Europe in midweek provide the backdrop to Arsenal’s visit to Anfield. No matter how poor the opposition may or may not have been on Tuesday, the bottom line was that Arsenal put on a classic display of speed and precision passing that is rarely seen.
Theo Walcott has attracted a lot of attention on account of his display against Slavia Prague (and as substitute last week versus Bolton) and Cesc Fabregas has been rightfully singled out for the start he has made to the season. But Alexandre Hleb also deserves mention. Wenger initially played him on the right side of midfield but from time to time he has been used in what might be considered the “Bergkamp” role – playing just behind the striker. On song he is a marvelous player to watch.
Arsenal’s record at Anfield in the Premiership has been poor with Liverpool picking up 9 wins and 3 draws in 15 matches. Both teams are unbeaten in the Premiership this season but Liverpool’s four draws against Arsenal’s one has them trailing the league leaders by six points after nine games.
A home loss would not be the end of Liverpool’s title hopes but it would certainly heap more pressure on the shoulders of Rafa Benitez - the bookies cut the odds on him being fired from 33-1 to 14-1 on the back of the loss to Besiktas this week. The fact that Liverpool needs the win and Arsenal are bound to hit a back game sooner or later makes me think that the gap between the two will be down to three points after this one is finished.
Manchester City leaves the friendly confines of the City of Manchester Stadium and travels south to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. City currently sits third in the Premiership with 18 of 22 points coming at home. A 100% home record contrasts starkly with four points from four away games. On top of that recent history is heavily in Chelsea’s favour.
City has only scored once in the last ten Premiership meetings (an Anelka penalty winner was only defeat suffered by Chelsea in the 2004/05 season) while on the last five league visits to Stamford Bridge City have lost four games and conceded 11 goals.
But, there again, City have not had too many players of the quality of Elano available to them over that time. Much has been made of Chelsea’s mini-revival under Avram Grant and if it is to continue then Elano will have to be controlled. The Brazilian has been involved in 9 of City’s 15 goals this season.
Short Corners – Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their last four league visits to Old Trafford – 3 draws and a win. Last week’s win for Portsmouth over Wigan meant four straight Premiership wins – a first for Pompey. Martin Jol was in charge at WHL for a week short of 3 years. His Premiership record in that time was 113 games, 47 wins, 30 draws and 36 losses with estimated net spending of around $70M. Newcastle visits Reading hoping that the home team’s defense is still in a giving mood. Newcastle are currently sitting 8th but in nine games the only team they have played that is currently above them is Manchester City. Can someone please explain to me why Bolton has hired Gary Megson? If you’re drowning surely the last thing you need is a concrete block.
MLS play-offs started on Thursday night and continue this weekend. The New England Revolution faces the New York Red Bulls with neither team having finished the season in grand style. Between the two teams they combined for only three wins in their last 12 matches. Both teams have struggled away from home this season with the Revolution without a win since August 19 while the Red Bulls only won three away games and they all came before mid-July.
Conversely both teams have relied on solid home records with the Red Bulls averaging 2 points a game with New England just a shade below that mark. In terms of goals NYRBs look to Angel and Altidore. They finished the regular season as the leagues top scoring duo with 28 goals between them (19 and 9). However, Taylor Twellman (15 goals) and Pat Noonan (7 goals) of New England are no slouches. If New England has a concern then it might be down to a scoring drought from the supporting cast. Andy Dorman’s last goal was in mid-July (the only goal of the game against Red Bulls) while Sharlie Joseph and Adam Cristman are not far behind having gone 13 and 11 games without a goal.
In Italy the game of the weekend is Milan at home against Roma. Both teams won in midweek in the Champions League and will be looking to build on that success. Roma have three draws and a loss in their last five Serie A matches and trail league leaders Inter by five points.
It’s doubtful that the schedulers could have come up with a more difficult fixture list for Roma if they had tried. Roma started with Juventus on the second last weekend of September and since then have played Fiorentina, Inter, Parma and Napoli. After Milan the Rome derby against Lazio beckons on October 31.
But for any neutral fan it has been a treat. Over the five games there have been 24 goals with scoring split evenly 12 for Roma and 12 for the opposition. Roma started the season with three clean sheets but are now in the position that only three teams in Serie A have conceded more goals.
Milan have had their own struggles with only two wins in eight games and a general malaise in their league performances. Last season they could look to an eight points deduction that left them adrift but there is no such excuse this season. The results between these two sides have gone back and forward over the last few seasons. But, with the exception of one match, the encounters have been close with eight of the last nine Serie A games being decided by no more than a goal.
Bobby, you're going to have to work harder to keep pace with FOX's resident Gooner muzzle-nuzzlers Nick Webster, Christian Miles and Andy Houlihan.
Any more of this ambivalent, half-hearted endorsement of Team Corgi and you're never gonna help FOX lure Arsenal TV away from the Gol channel.
It was nice of you to say that it doesn't matter what the level of opposition is when Arsenal style it up. But it does. Try to make the likes of Slavia Prague sound a little less like a pub team in future. Mind you, even Spurs beat them 2-0 away last year.
The fact is, Arsenal will soon need a little moral support from broadcast buddies like yourself. When you look at their Premier league sked so far, they've only played one game in nine outside of London, that in Blackburn where the toll of travel and Mark Hughes' Lancashire brutes forced them to settle for a point.
Otherwise they have played six home and two away games within a 30-minute drive from Cashburton Grove, mostly throttling the league's weak sisters.
We can't have people thinking the schedule has been somehow rigged to favour the ruling class fan's team of choice. Even if it has been as soft as tapioca and clubs like ManU, Chelsea or Liverpool have had it tougher so far, and played more away games than home games.
Didn't Megson do pretty well with WBA a couple of years ago? Not too well, obviously, or he would still be there I guess. Why would Tottenham make this move, Bobby? What went into the decision(no jokes about booze or lobotomies)?

Bobby -- I know you have been an ardent critic of the Glazers financial model used in the purchase United. As a United fan but not much of an economist I have tried, with marginal success, to follow your analysis and critique. I understand the concept of "bad debt" you have been warning against but I still don't see the upside, financially, for the Glazers if they don't keep the team competitive. You have, since not long after or perhaps even before the takeover, come just short of predicting financial ruin leading to on field failure as resources for talent dwindle. As obviously smart business men, I cannot see the Glazers allowing the Team/product to suffer because of their financial scheme. Further, the purchases of late would indicate they do realize the necessity for success on the pitch for there to be success at the bank. There is no question that their involvement in United is not based on a love of the team or even the sport itself and the debt situation does look dire on paper but could you please further explain any possible hustle we should be leery of? If you could, a "for example" of a possible scenario, in which they could make money at the expense of the team’s quality. Or, is it just a very risky gamble?
I know you have gone over this many times, so thanks.

the last time we went to anfield and crouch helped himself with a hattrick we had been knocked out of fa cup, then champions leauge and lost the carling cup and had toure and ade suspended , lost to everton, relied on a certain aliadire and baptista for goal and for sure the worst time to go to anfield , this time we are flying and l can not see past arsenal, l do not think liverpool will attack us the way they did chelsea and will he play 4-4-2 and where will gerrard play, how will alonso handle the game coming from a long term injury we saw stievie g 's toe, l just feel they are too many uncertanities for the reds while the arsenal team where as arsenal pick the team on their own and will agger play or hypia
The Glazers want to borrow against future ticket income ,isn`t that where it all started to go wrong for Leeds (that ,and missing out on the CL for one season)?
Here`s hoping.
Would someone tell Tony Cascarino that Benitez is not a rotator ,it has been proved beyond a doubt on this blog.
One of UEFA`s criteria for selecting host stadia/cities is security ,and yet they select Rome.
And I assume it is the new Mestalla on their list ,not the current one.
The Times has it`s latest top 50 list (this one could be 500),great British losers.
And at No.12.........Arsenal in Europe.
The BIG game this weekend takes place in North Yorkshire.
The Harrogate super-classico.
Railway vs Town ,in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.
Sixty four teams taking part ,all hoping to draw Leeds in the first round proper.
ulsterson - I'll get a response back to you on next week's midweek blog re the United debt situation.
The Spurs board made it an impossible situation after their initial courting of Ramos. From then on Jol was only ever a loss or two away from being fired hence my comment two weeks ago that his departure was inevitable.

Manchester United by Kelso –
660 m – shiite and Bill Kenwright thinks he’s got problems. The only good thing is for the whole Manchester United organization to come crashing down – the laughter would be heard from Land’s End to John o’ Groats. The tears would be heard loudest in Essex.
2010 & 2011 –
I said Wembley was in the running in midweek. But you know the criteria that UEFA use are #### – whilst it’s really easy to get to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome the facilities are shiite – large concrete steps constitute the bulk of the seating, the toilets are awful; it’s very old and decrepit. It does have a wonderful atmosphere, the plaza outside the stadium is nice and Rome is a beautiful city.
Tony Cascarino – Hmm that was really, really, really insightful!
Bruce – he’s done alright!
Keane – don’t forget he was a product of the excellence at Forest!
Ince – the bloke is going about things the right way! Learning the trade where the stakes are manageable.
Top players may or may not make good managers. Of the top managers in Europe over the past few seasons who was a top player? Of the top of my head, Anchelloti won stuff at Milan and Roberto Mancini was an Italian great. Kendall was a decent player. Dalgliesh was awesome. Keagan he was great but ultimately fell short.
Ferguson was a journeyman. Was Shankley a great player, Mourinho, Wenger.
Done statistically and thoroughly you would probably find that being a great player has no real weight when it comes to deciding if you are going to be a successful manager.

The first International football match was a bunch of English sailors against a Napoli 11. Seems that I’ve read this article before. Admittedly he’s rehashed it but Maidment looks like he’s become adept at cutting and pasting. Plagiarism anyone?
This is just me :)
The ‘bash the team at the top’ roundabout focuses this week on Arsenal. C’mon people. Journalism shouldn’t just be regurgitating the same old shiite! Be creative, innovative, look at things afresh. Check out the ACTUAL measurements for the pitches then look back and see if Arsenal have been better or worse on pitches less wide/long than their own?
Anfield is actually wider than the Emirates and only 3 yards shorter - plonkers!
Obviously the Icelandic magnate has been smoking too much haddock. Stupid brainless idea. No wonder Platini is gobsmacked by the inrush of ‘investors’ into English football.

Roma’s past five in Serie A is DDLWD.
Milan’s past five in Serie A is DLDWD.
MLS Cup competition – odd that is doesn’t use the ‘Away Goal Rule’ instead if the two teams are tied on goals at the end of the two legs they play an extra 30 minutes. A benefit to the home side in the last game.

Mr Mcmahon l have to say that l do not agrree that benitez will be sacked even if they do not compete for anything by march, the hicks are in debt and reaching the final on a couple of occasions has given liverpool almost 100m pounds so they will have to look into that, as well l clearly think benitez does not trust gerrard as a central midfield player and gerrard , does not like to play at the right , and reason , he plays him centrally is due to media pressure.l think benitez would not complain to see gerrard off next summer , because he substituted him in the game where , he probably needed a win to be anywhere near the top and did not trust him.the pressure and odds are from ex liverpool players who want to massage their egos and most of the guys who lay into benitez are ex reds and it will seem as he is under pressure and you look at jamie rednkapp, souness, mark lawrenson, phil thompson, paul walsh , the list is endless so it tend s to highly exagarate things and thats why ancheloti has a job as well.l can not believe spurs want to pay ramos 6m pounds a season, l just think that too much for guy who is good but the difference between spain & england is that in spain you have two big teams and the other two places in the champions leauge are up for grabs and then in england it seems the top four are a strong cartel that are difficult to break, people talk of jose but they forget that in 3 seasons he spend 169m pounds and l can not see spurs giving ramos that much, l just think there is no big step up between jol and ramos, he could easily had been in the
Craigy-Magnusson's comments are nothing more than an illustration of what the game is all about today...MONEY!
The league is nothing to what it used to be(not even when I first started following) and he's right(despite what the PL spokesman said), "Sooner or later teams are going to be playing a 'meaningful' game over here in the states" just so they can expand their market.
Did Jol spend the money or did Damien Comolli? The number you quoted in spending is what went out and does not take into account that nearly $90M came in from transfer fees. Looking at one side does not provide a true picture of what happened.
Cant wait for Sundays game but I don't think its even being shown in Canada..... Not liking this years setup on t.v this is the type of stuff that drives people to get illegal dishes instead of buying Setanta.
I wouldn't be shocked if Liverpool pulled it out under normal circumstances but I think this one might be to far gone. Anfield might be a hard away game but last I checked the fans cant put Hypia in a time machine. Sadly I could see this one coming down to the ref. I'm picturing Walcott round the Fin or Carragher and drawing a penalty. Liverpool is going to need a herculean effort from midfield to disrupt Arsenal because if the passing is clicking they are cooked.
JayAlves - My information is that the game is on The Score at 11:00 EST. I think the normal times are out of sync because the UK changed the clock last weekend while we will have still to do that in North America.
Does the clock changing vary between the US and Canada? I know our govt changed things around so our clocks get turned back on Nov. 4.
h14, other Arsenal slurpers:
I think that this weekend's game is going to be the one where Arsenal finally miss Henry. Liverpool, under Benitez, have been really adept at disrupting other team's "normal" games meaning that usually games are lost by Liv because of deflected shots, set pieces, calls or yes, an outstanding play from a top-class player. Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic about this Sunday's game.
Arsenal are confident and Liverpool aren't looking so good defensively. I don't care if they are playing at home, I think it'll end Liverpool 1 Arsenal 3.
The best action this weekend is coming out of Spain, though!
Wha hae yooo ta say boot Allan Hutton's inevitable abduction from Rangers ta tha land sooth ah tha wall?
An can yee cooment on any prime foolbacks yet ta bae unearthed by Rangers elsewhere in tha SPL?
Kidding aside ( that was my grandmother I was impersonating )
Are their any clubs in the EPL that would benefit by going after Hutton in the January window?
Do you think the allure of playing in the round of 16 would be enough to keep him at Ibrox?
It's my guess the money offered for him will be significant, could Rangers hold off the lure of the money given what they have spent so far under Smith and the additional revenues they anticipate from having made the Champions League?
Thanks

I wish I could get EPL games in HD. Right now I DVR champs league games, and they play one on ESPN2 which I can get in HD, and the other on ESPN classic, which is not HD, and the differences are so amazing.
TBH rico I'm not 100% sure if their broadcasts are in HD for soccer as I don't have an HD tv... yet... I know the last WC was in HD. But yes HD is mindblowing for sports. I've sat and watched entire tennis matches before and large amounts of golf when in HD as the difference is amazing especially for those sports.
Gers4lyfe - Right backs don't seem to generate all that much interest in the Premier League - even though the likes of Chelsea struggled with that position for a couple of seasons. I don't know if you were arond in the 70s but Hutton's style reminds me a lot of John Brownlie of Hibs. Unfortunately Brownlie suffered a broken leg around 73 I think and was never the same player again. They both have a similar build, fearless, decisive in the tackle and love going forward. I played right back for the school around Brownlie's time and he was a bit of a favourite for me.
2nd division Spanish club, Granada 74, signed a contract to be part of a 13-part reality TV show. They're currently #15 in the league table. They'll receive €600,000 for the show...
Guess who they drew in the Copa del Rey? Atletico! ;)

My son got his Farbegas jersey this week and wears it proudly but I told him it's not to late to see the "light" and jump on the Leeds band wagon...we're 54 places behind and closing fast.
JayAlves, what is TBH? Basically the only HD soccer you can catch is on a major network(ABC, ESPN) or HD Net played games for MLS.
Bobby- You hear any rumors of FSC getting a HD channel anytime soon? I know that Fox Sports World has a channel that doesn't broadcast anything, but I am assuming that should be in the works relatively soon.
LGB - don't be naiive - whilst money is an integral part of the game it isn't "all about money".
You are a fan - you are part of football - do you watch Liverpool for financial reasons? do you watch Liverpool for enjoyment (CL aside :) )? does your team inspire passion, anger, joy?
Football is still about much more than money.
Football is much bigger than the G14, the CL and the Premier League.
Don't come back to me about how I'm living in the past either, football has changed dramatically since the days of the First Divsion or Bolton winning the FA Cup. Only an #### wouldn't see that.
Some things haven't changed, not one tiny, tincey, eeny weeny little bit.
How do you reckon you'll handle the arse this weekend. Alonso back will be a huge boost to you, he allows gerrard a certain amount of freedom. But apart from the game against Chelsea Liverpool haven't been able to raise their game this season. When it's down to the wire and players need to excel many don't. If you can't raise your game against Everton who can you raise it against.
I'd have to go for Arsenal though, they have momentum, find a way to win games, a scoring freely, Hleb is on fine form. Problems in goal aside a result for them is a win or a draw, Liverpool NEED to win.
Any reference to sacking that involves American owners being either sack happy or manager lovers just needs to look at San Diego last season.
I'm sure American owners can be as ruthless as anybody. Although Benitez may be Anfield for years to come.
rico,
I wait for the day when there are English games in HD here in the US. I'm jealous when I see "Sky Sports HD" ads on the the billboards during games. But I saw Dish Network has a HD channel called World Sports. I think World Sports shows La Liga games. I've never tried it, so I can't say what the coverage is like.
Fact - Jol is the one of the most successful Spurs Managers ever (particularlry in terms of winning %age 45% and league placings) - the dutchman also finally beat Chelsea and went 5 mnths with only two away losses, a UEFA Cup QF, League Cup SF and FA QF.
Fact - they allowed him to spend 16M on Bent and up to 10M on Bale in the Summer, all his tranfers cost approx 40M.
Fact Ramos is a wanderer - never been at a club for more than 3 years.
Fact - Ramos will want to pick and choose his own players to bring to the club in January
Fact - Ramos' most succesful tenure at a club is as a CUP manager, Spurs are after a better Premier League placing
Fact - Jol's position was practically untenable (thanks Bobby) as Spurs talked to Ramos pre-season.
So now Spurs will have all this dead weight on their payroll - need more cash to get in the new players Ramos needs/wants, have a long way to go to reach their preferred League place or qualify for the UEFA Cup KO stages. And in the midst of all this they have a 'keeper with no confidence and terribly a leaky defence. In their current state you almost have to think they are the Underdogs at home to Blackburn!!
They either had to do one of two things - fire Jol in the Summer or give him their 100% backing this season.
What they have done is inept, crass and funny. But a mate who's loved the Spurs for decades has been a prime target for ribbing for his club's shoddy season thus far.
Plus I'm sure Arse and Chelsea are having a laugh as well.
Maybe Atleti can shed some light

Big questions mark for spurs is this Robinson's last year as a number 1 keeper in the topflight?
I don't know too many quality goalies outside of the US whom the Spurs might go for, but I once again, have to mention Matt Ries of the Revolution. I have seen him on more than one occasion save the Revolutions butts with some fine saves. I am also high on Hartman, I thought he was an awesome keeper with the Galaxy, not really sure how he is doing with KC. Guzan should also be considered. And last I am surprised we haven't heard more transfer rumors involving Chris Seitz. He is the keeper of the future for the US. There is no doubt in my mind he will be the USA's number 1 after 2010, maybe even by 2010.
Craigy-Football is a business plain and simple. It doesn't matter why I watch the game or what emotions the game evokes from me, as long as I keep coming back and continue to give my money they are satisfied.
As for being naive, take a look at all the foreign ownership and take a look at what the new owners are saying about the proposed game to the states...The ones involved with football are telling you the answer but you've got to want to listen.
Rico-Yeah the Champions League games aren't shown in true HD...the World Cup was. And that was a thing of beauty!!!!
I read the Bent wasn't even Jol's decision. That he was purchased from "above".
As it is any team that starts Dawson and has Robinson as a keeper is going to leak goals.
Since its at Anfield you can bet your bottom dollar that Liverpool will be going to play a physical style especially in the center of the park.
With the physical style I'd expect to see Momo pair Gerrard in the middle with Riise on the left and Pennant on the right. In back you would then suspect to see Aurelio and Finnan as the wing backs and Carra and Hyypia in central defense. And then up top I'd expect Vorinon to play because he would be perfect against the Arse but I'm sure we'll see Crouchie and Kuyt.
I'm not talking about the physical aspect of Liverpool's game (Arsenal aren't a team of wimps!) but whether the manager (tactically) can outthink Wenger and more importantly the players, can they raise their game - on current form, Liverpools' last five or six games they haven't looked a team that is playing at it's best. Individuals sometimes play well (Voronin against Spurs) but that simply isn't enough to win a title.
LGB - you have such a narrow/blinkered perspective of football. But it's your perspective so if you want to agree to differ?
BESIKTAS BESIKTAS BESIKTAS BESIKTAS!
GO BLACK EAGLES!
Don't forget LGB - the draw for the KO stages of the UEFA CUP is 21st December!

Arsenal is stronger this year, the TEAM spirit is very high and they are full of confidence coming off that 7-nil victory so it should be an entertaining match. Liverpool will be going all guns but Fabregas will just shoot them down. Can't wait for this match. It looks quite a real possibility seeing Liverpool in the UEFA Cup with how they are playing.

What's all this Liverpool going to the UEFA Cup? Aren't they BOTTOM of Group A? They'll probably end up with more points than at least Besiktas, but I'm not going to take anything for granted.
Again, I think Liverpool will be able to stop Arsenal from playing. Hell, if they can beat the Arsenal of 3 years ago with Neil Mellor playing up top after Liverpool lost a CL game in midweek, certainly they are capable of doing it this weekend.
Arsenal should beat Liverfools or at least get a draw from this game coz currently they are the better team and have the momentum.
If they loose which is very possible but I don't see it happening then thats when we will know whether they are real contenders because to get back to winning ways they'll have to beat ManUre.
A loss to Liverfools won't be as bad as a loss to ManUre coz 1. ManUre rivalry is deeper. 2. We are at home 3. ManUre is the team to beat coz they are defending champions.
Whatever happens in this two games though won't decide whether Arsenal win the title or not what happens after this 2 games is what will. Especially if they loose and if they win both will they be overconfident and become complaycent.
So far though Arsenal have achieved what I said they would need to win the league. They have won at home, Scored goals, and most importantly gained confidence by Starting the season well. Confidence is key to this team coz on paper they can beat anyone it's when there mentle state is tested that they struggle. But like I said before the season give Young players confidence and they'll do wonders". That's what they are riding on currently.
