Paul Doyle lists six outstanding goalkeeping displays.
Carlos Bilardo is not impressed with the quality of the play or the tactics in the Premiership. There again England has never been in love with the doctor.
Last weekend while Arsenal were putting five goals past Derby County, Liverpool were forced to settle for a scoreless draw with their Premiership bogey team Birmingham. This weekend Arsenal faces what could be considered their bete noire – West Ham United. As well as beating Manchester United twice last season, the Hammers also did the double over Arsenal – and didn’t concede a goal in the four games. A fantastic accomplishment for a team that only avoided the drop on the last day of the season.
In fact West Ham are looking for a fourth straight Premiership win over the Gunners having won 3-2 on their final trip to Highbury in February 2006. The other game that season between these two London rivals was a scoreless draw so Arsenal fans’ memories need to stretch back to January 2003 for the last time their favourites took three points off of West Ham.
Back then Thierry Henry notched a hat trick. Last weekend a hat trick from Emmanuel Adebayor claimed the first hat trick to be scored at Emirates Stadium and took his season tally to six in the Premiership. Arsenal will be hoping that the Togo international can strike again given that the Gunners have never lost in the 18 games in which Adebayor has scored.
While West Ham’s summer signing of Craig Bellamy (the only British player to have been transferred for $10M or more on five occasions – good or bad, discuss) has been the usual centre of attention it could be argued that the return of a fit Dean Ashton will prove to be of greater value to the Hammers. The now bottle-blonde Ashton (trying to become the first footballer to improve his game after dyeing his hair!) has scored in the last two Premiership games as well as scoring a very late winner in the Carling Cup in midweek.
A continuation of the scoring streak and Steve McClaren will find it difficult not to pick the former Norwich and Crewe striker for vital European Championship qualifying games in October. Three former Arsenal players will be in the West Ham squad - goalkeeper Richard Wright, Matthew Upson and Freddie Ljungberg. Former Charlton, Chelsea and Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker may finally make his Premiership debut for the Hammers.
Liverpool’s improvement away from home can be gauged by comparing their record on the road this season with their visit to Wigan last December. Liverpool thumped Wigan 4-0 but that was their first away win of the season and it came at the eighth time of trying. It also took their goals scored away from Anfield to five after being shut-out for 6 straight away games.
This season Liverpool have already won two away games, drawn the other and they have still let in a goal from open play this season. Since Wigan arrived in the Premiership Liverpool hold a perfect Premier League record with four wins from four matches, 10 goals scored and none against.
After leaving Fernando Torres out of the starting line up for the last two games (don’t mention rotation to Liverpool fans, I did once but I think I got away with it!) and then being held scoreless it is hard to see how Rafa Benitez cannot start the Spaniard on Saturday.
As for Wigan there is a sense that after two wins in their first three games their record of two losses and two draws in the last four games is a fairer reflection of their overall quality. However, Wigan are a team that manages to get on the scoreboard – albeit in the second half. They have only been shut out once this season but seven of their eights goals have come after a cup of tea and a pep talk.
Chelsea might have cruised to an easy midweek win over Hull City in the Carling Cup but the first priority has to be to stop the Premiership bleeding that has seen the Blues drop to their lowest league position in five seasons. Chelsea have only three wins in last 12 Prem games stretching back to last season and are currently without a goal in 329 minutes – their longest streak in nearly a decade.
We are so used to hearing that the first goal is so important in a game – and it is – but it has been a curse in Fulham games this season. The side scoring first in a Fulham league game this season has yet to win and on five occasions it has been the Cottagers. Conversely Chelsea has gone behind five times but still recovered to pick up seven points.
The dilemma for Avram Grant is how to come good on his commitment of playing attractive football when the platform for success comes from a strong defense – something that Chelsea has failed to deliver on this season. In seven games this season Chelsea has conceded 8 goals. That’s not a lot for a normal team but in the first 7 games last season they recorded 4 goals against and 4 shut outs - the season before it was 1 goal and 6 shut outs.
This weekend in MLS we may have a preview of a first round play off game in store. If the Chicago Fire can maintain a hold on 5th in the east and stay ahead of the western conference Colorado Rapids then there is a very good chance that they will “cross-over” and run into Chivas come the play-offs.
Chivas are now guaranteed place in the final eight and are also unbeaten in their last eight games. Their next challenge is to catch DC United in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. They are three points behind but with a game still in hand.
Chivas’ home record has been outstanding so far with ten wins and no losses in 12 games and they have only trailed at home in one game this season – 2-0 to DC United but still rebounded to share the points. Ante Razov has been hot with 6 goals in the last 4 games but the Fire will be confident of dousing his streak.
Ten of Chicago’s 14 away points have come in the last 6 games; the other 7 away games only generated 4 points. What’s more Chicago are also unbeaten in their last four games although three have been drawn. All things considered an excellent game in prospect.
In the Bundesliga it is the team currently sitting second – Bayer Leverkusen – trying to ensure that the four point gap on league leaders Bayern Munich does not grow larger this weekend. It also brings together the Bundesliga’s leading scorers from the last two seasons.
Miroslav Klose notched 24 goals two seasons ago for Werder Bremen but signed for Bayern Munich this summer. Around the same time the 2007 top marksman Theofanis Gekas moved from Bochum to Bayer Leverkusen. While most of the soccer world knows of Klose, Gekas is also a man with a nose for goals. He was the top scorer in Greece in 2005 and the runner up the following year before moving on loan to Bochum. He almost single handedly kept Bochum in the top flight while finishing as the Bundesliga’s top marksman in the 2006/07 season. This past summer a complex three deal that also involved Panathinaikos saw him land at Bayer Leverkusen.
So far this season Klose has got the jump on his Greek rival outscoring him 8 goals to 3. However, if Klose is to add to his total then he will have to do something that has not been done so far this season – score against Bayer at home. There again Bayern has averaged three goals a game away from home this season and this fixture has delivered 17 goals the last three times these sides have clashed in Leverkusen. I’m willing to bet that Bayer’s shut out streak is about to end.
Roma started a tough run of games last weekend with a draw against Juventus after leading 2-1 at half time. In midweek there was a reprise against Fiorentina. These two results combined with an Inter draw at Livorno and a win against Sampdoria means that Roma and Inter are now tied at the top of Serie A with 11 points from five games. Inter have not lost in their last five Serie A matches away to Roma although Roma can look back to a comprehensive Coppa Italia win last spring and a 1-0 Italian Super Cup win last month.
Totti was rested for Wednesday’s game but is almost certain to return for this table top clash. Totti was Europe’s leading marksman last season and has already scored 5 goals in his four games although he trails Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Inter who has two more – he’s tied at the top with David Trezeguet of Juventus.
After relinquishing their position at the top of the table for 24-hours to Villarreal (apparently their first time atop La Liga) Real Madrid leapfrogged three teams after beating Real Betis 2-0 on Thursday evening. Now manager Bernd Schuster returns to his old stomping ground where he will find his old charges in anything but fine fettle.
During his two years with Getafe, Schuster led them to consecutive ninth place league finishes and a Copa del Rey Final appearance last season.
His replacement Michael Ladrup – also a former Real Madrid and Barcelona player – has not got off to an au####ious start. Getafe is still winless after 5 games although they are undefeated at home with two draws. Getafe’s “success” during Schuster’s tenure – and his predecessor Quique Sánchez Flores - was very much built on performances at home. An illustration of that is the fact that Real Madrid has lost twice and drawn once at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez since Getafe were promoted for the 2004/05 season.
Bobby I thought you did a great job of explaining Arsenal financial situation on Monday. Talking about how Arsenal's loan is a good loan because it's a loan that was invested an Asset that can bring profits in the future. I'm taking some business classes and how you explained it is how my college proffessor would have. So great job.
As for this weekend big game for Arsenal, coz this boogy teams always seem to come to haunt us. Bolton did it for years hope hope we can break the hex this weekend. But my eyes will be on that Inter-Roma game.
I love how Benitez said well just because Torres scored a hat trick doesn't guarentee a starting spot. Jesus way to use the your 60 million or however much dollar man, why not just put him in formedahyde, and place him in a glass case. And if Benitez is worried about Torres getting too many games, maybe he should have sat him out the carling cup game, and played him in the league game.
Of course this is probably just Benitez reiterating what he has always said about rotation, and Torres will probably start this weekend.
Woeful Deportivo lost at home for the second time this season, to the anger of their supporters.
Sergio's response to the whistles, chants, and overall anger directed from the supporters?
"If they do not support us then that is their choice, but they should not whistle us."
"If they do not like what they see and they would prefer to stay at home, then they should not come. Maybe we should be grateful, but they pay their entrance money and can say what they want."
Sergio, by the way, wasn't exactly performing well last weekend...
I remember on the eve o####ame that would have seen Rafa start his 100th consecutive changed side he was very defensive about his rotation policy and it's merits. So, what did he do, he named an unchanged side. I have Torres on my fantasy team, and I'm leaving him there.
One leftover from yesterday...I take back my non-apology apology to albertagooner. I do believe he's ignorant and would like to add arrogant to that charge too.
What's the more curious decision? Resting Torres against Birmingham only to play him in a Carling Cup game 3 days later or switching keepers for a WC semi-final and watch the defense break down on a set piece and a saveable shot going in inside 27 minutes?
Someone could say that albertagooner probably has forgotten more about football than some of the kids who post on this site will ever know.
Ah youth, it's wasted on the young. Thank you Frank Capra.
Thought it was fine for Solo to be upset (restrained) about Ryan's decision but she crossed the line when she called out her teammate Scurrys' prowess in goal, on camera.
Dumb move by a young kid.
Source considered. One quick question, though, -- how old are you? You made a reference to reaching adulthood so I'm a little curious. lol
I'll back Rafa on rotation. The Liverpool supporters who complained about Benitez's policy early last year saw it pay off in the spring with the late run to the Champions League. It's a long season when you are campaigning on four fronts. Any of his four strikers should be able to do the business against the likes of Brum. Period.
gongatore,
Now THERE's a tongue in cheek reference.
CIAO
Hope Solo said she could have made some of the stops that Scurry missed and questioned her coach's decision. She's the female version of Terrell Owens, throwing her teammate and coach under the bus. She's got some growing up to do, too.
Ciao-
It's gOngatore with an O, mate. From one paisan (I presume) to another.
Yes, Solo said that she would have stopped all of the goals yesterday. Looks like a lot of kids shot their mouth off yesterday.
If only Frank Capra were alive today.
I'm very nervous about the West Ham game. They're a real bogey for us. I'll be satisfied with a point.
It's been interesting to compare the discussion/debate about the women's wc US-Brazil game in the US media and on US blogs v. the Brazilian media and Brazilian blogs. I regularly read the Brazilian media and participate on some Brazil futbol blogs. This issue was also brought up in the NY Times soccer blog:
Brazilians (including the players and manager in their post-match comments) haven't mentioned the goalkeeping issue at all, they haven't talked at all about any US team tactics or individual players. All that they've talked about were Greg Ryan's pre-match comments calling the Brazil team violent. Those comments were widely reported in the Brazilian press and were taken up in press conferences by the Brazilian coach and his players, who responded to them.
Those comments really fired the Brazil team up---and motivated them even more to up their game. It's an old lesson but coaches and players should never say anything provocative before a game, esp. such an important one.
I met Hope and got to see her play in a couple local tourney in Seattle. She is definately a skilled player. However, I have seen her talk herself up too much and then fail under pressure. She is known to undermine some of her teammates, needless to say her teammate really like her.

yeah Hope Solo, had the opportunity to take the high road, but chose instead to insult a women whom helped pave the way for womens soccer. Very disrespectul, and I don't feel nearly as bad for her now.
Daniel Craig, that is interesting I did not know that, the red card which i did not see but heard about pretty much killed any chance the US had of winning it. I think regardless of the situation Brazil would have won, but as I said in my blog, any edge the US might have had prior to the game, was lost with that goalie change distraction.
solo might be a nice woman but she broke a cardinal rule in team sport.
agree with the claim that it made no difference who was in the nets for us yesterday. the rest of the world caught up to our team and while they say there are hundreds of martas in brazil.
are they any in the states?
abby wambach is good but a very different player.
the red card was a second yellow and was a joke as boxx was fouled by the brazilian.
ryan made two mistakes, squad selection and the claim that brazil played in a violent fashion.
Sounds to me like some posters might be implyng Ryan's decision to bench Solo and play Scurry affected the team performance and changed the result. Does anybody else think that is terribly insulting to Brazil? It rings a lot like the post-mortems following England's ouster in 2002 to the Brazilian men, where the pundits and supporters blamed Sven's lack of passion/serial dating/cautious tactics rather than accept the fact they got beaten by a superior side. I'd suggest the goalkeeping controversy and whining about a dodgy red card has largely overshadowed the fact the U.S. women were soundly spanked by a better side. Full stop. A few pundits and supporters need to do apply Occam's Razor to this result. And Hope Solo is a selfish, spoiled athlete who is getting a lot more support than Terrell Owens even though her post-match pout rings similar to his bayonetting of coaches and teammates. I wonder if the reaction of the media and supporters would be were different if Solo were African-American rather than a pretty blonde.
The whole point is it is difficult to determine if the best team won, why?
The coach made a decision to add a huge distraction, that had huge implifications as to how his team would play.
How can the Red card be inconsequential, the third goal scored was because they were pushing with a man down, which I severly doubt would have happend had it been 11 v 11. It also pretty much guarenteed the US would be able to mount a comeback, which they were very capable of.
Last I don't really see it is insulting that people didn't feel that our best team was out there against Brazil, and by best team I mean team focused on the game, and not some soap opera the coach conjured. In fact alot of people were very wary of Brazil, especially Marta, and the US was considered lucky to win the gold in 2004.
You comparison of with Englands national team would work better with our National Basketball team instead.
Whether or not Solo could have saved those goals is indifferent. Consistency in a team is key. It is very unusual for a team to change keeper (unless for injury) in the middle of a tournament. It demoralizes the keeper coming out and it makes the keeper coming and the rest of the team wondering how they should react... So not a smart move. Regardless, it still does not give the right for Hope Solo to talk shiat about her team mate and coach.
Like any decision in football that a manger makes If it works he will be highly praised if it doesn't he will be highly criticized. Now Benitez rotation is not working because they haven't won the PL and yes they have won the c.l but I would say that is down more to luck than rotation coz in both the one they won and the one they reached the finals they had to go through by penalties not by whooping the other teams coz they were fresher. Wenger right now is getting props for the sale of Thierry but had Arsenal started badly we would have been crucifying him.
I understand Benitez saying he is trying to keep Torres fit but by keeping him out for 2 Epl games then playing him in a carling cup game that makes no sense to me. You don't see Sir Alex and Wengerman resting Rooney and Van. P. in Epl games and then playing them in Carling cup games let alone FA Cup and C.L. So if I was a Liverfool fan I'd be pissed as hell thank God I ain't though.
"Sounds to me like some posters might be implyng Ryan's decision to bench Solo and play Scurry affected the team performance and changed the result." I really don't know what to say except WOW!
1. Today Wenger "voiced his fears" about foreign owners, saying "people who buy large clubs refinance their purchase by borrowing money, by putting the debt on the account of the club." And how is that different from domestic owners? Seems the only kind of owner allowed are the billionares?
2. How does the finance of the Champions League and EUFA Cup work? I've heard that the CL pays each club for everything (hotel, travel, ect.), whereas EUFA Cup requires the clubs to pay. Therefore a club needs to get to the Semi-finals to actually make any money.
Re rotation Rico, SAF changed 11 for Coventry and so when you raise it as an issue try going one better than the amoebic (single cell organisms) clones who commentate and compare the changes with other top clubs in England, if not Europe.
The stated policy of the top four clubs is to have two players to every position, so if quality is to be retained in depth to fulfil and maintain that ambition, then the 22 have to play sometime.
Liverpool's problem against Birmingham (and arguably Portsmouth) was not the strikers. Rafa failed in one simple detail: to address and win the battle for the congested midfield. The absence of the scrappers Liverpool have for that job was patently highlighted when Sissoko and Benayoun returned against Reading. Torres merely accepted the fruit of that Liverpool midfield performance.
As for Setanta's results? Well that at least explains the premium pricing they have adopted in Canada. It is sadly cheaper to watch certain adult tv here than to watch Setanta! I for one refuse to pay what would amount to 27% increase per month on my cable bill for this one channel. Shane O'Rourke (perhaps a relative of Mickey?) says that there will be no reduction in the channel pricing anytime soon. Seeing their results today speaks volumes.

answer to one: Any type of owner is allowed that follows the FA's rules but what Wenger is trying to get at is whats already been stated by many other people many times. All ManU has got from the Glazers is debt so far you might be able to argue that they gave them a new board that would allow them to borrow to buy players but thats tentative at best, Chelsea got huge influxes of cash and titles but now the money seems to be drying up and the owner is getting very hands on and Liverpool has only debt to show so far from the Gillette purchase but it looks like they will be the driving force to put Liverpool in a new stadium which will have the same results as Arsenals move (obviously a good thing). Whether they will be injecting funds into Liverpool for the stadium or it will just be more debt is yet to be seen. Of all 3 scenarios none of them are better then Arsenals current financial situation and in Chelsea's interference from the owner over the manager which would be Wenger's biggest fear.
Arsenals situation is even worse because they have 0 to gain from a new owner. Already have a new stadium and already have more money then they want to spend on transfers. The only result of Usmanov buying the club would be him borrowing against it after he takes control to pay off his purchase and then strangling the club with interest payments and dividends on the profits. Dein has made a deal with the devil to try and install himself at the top of Arsenal.

Bellamy is a curious one.
I supsect that the moment any manager has a bust up with Bellers and sees his tantrums, not to mention his form going right off the boil, said manager wants rid and quickly.
Answer? Play him when he will look good and rotate him out of crunch games so as to sell him for a good fee, to an aspiring premiership side short of strike power.
Sound familliar?
Also a Canadian who wont be getting Setanta soon. Really cant justify 15 more a month for some of the games I was already getting on Sportsnet or FSW. I'll just go to the pub and have breakfast instead anytime I want to see a game thats Setanta only. Its kinda funny I watch more Serie A, SPL and Bundesliga now because of this as thats what GolTV and FSW is showing. Kinda backfired on Setanta over here.
JayAlves, as a Liverpool fan I cannot pay 15 bucks a month for the odd LFC game. I knew this was coming and again signed up to the Liverpool site to listen to every game live and watch most highlights the following day, which costs 90 bucks a year including club message boards etc.
I had a lengthy email exchange with Shane O'rourke, who tried to justify the price on the basis of all the Premier league matches Setanta will show. I explained, to no avail, that I only watched LFC games and the odd games of our main competitors and was not interested in most of the rest, inluding the elevator music they play during intervals.
TSN carries much of the European stuff anyway, so while I do not get as much as I would in England, I am not being skinned either.

realrico,
You still have to play the game. All the "controversy" does is take away from Brazil's impeccable performance. By the way, you're risking a groin pull jumping to the very shaky conclusion that the US team would have come back 2-0 as they had showed they weren't capable of anything up to that point. The red card was silly but inconsequential. Why don't you Just give the Brazil gals a little credit rather than waxing speculative about a coach's decision.
CIAO
Regardless of the decison, the game gets played on the pitch. If anything, Solo's pre-match sulking probably hurt the team's cohesion but if you can't get up for it, you didn't deserve to go through, regardless of a coaching decision or dodgy red card. A little credit to the winners please. I'm pretty sure you didn't have much use for the whining that came from the Aussies, French etc. after they lost to the Azzuri last summer, right paisan?
Ahh, I see the wonder twins have posted, too! "WOW' verbal, is the smartest, most mature comment you've made. Well done! And, ohphuque, you might want to learn about Occam's Razor before trying to make a lame joke about it; it's a principle that will serve you well in adulthood in fields far beyond the football pitch.
So the simplest and therefore most likely reason for the USA's loss is that Brazil is better. Well unfortunately in sports the better team doesn't always win. However I am sure that Ockham would argue that GOD is always GOD and therefore always exists. So being better as a reason would not survive the cut of old Ock's razor.
In a one off game there are many factors that will affect the outcome among them are team unity, the other team's motivation, and officiating. It looks like those three factors were not in the ladies favor.
This guy blew it. Why would he take her moment away, she was playing great? If I was her friend and on that team I would have been distracted going into that game. He also gave Brazil unnecessary extra motivation.
I don't know what she said about Scurry but up to insulting her teamate she can say anything about that guy, he stole part of her life and career because he had a hunch. She can also say she would have made those saves, nothing wrong with that.
oh my bf lords occum's razor over me all the time, and the rest of us can only hope to be as brilliant. mature and charming as youve shown us how to be here.
Sorry, I didn't bring it up, and I got carried away. I was a philosphy major as an undergrad. I had to give it up even though I loved the feeling of superiority I had over all the A'holes who made more money than me.
Did you see Solo's postmatch interview?
Mate, in a team sport you don't state on camera that "I would have made the saves". Absolute wrong move by Solo. She's a kid and it was justified to be upset but don't throw your teammate under the bus.
Glad you caught the reference, but you're clouding the issue by engaging in the speculative "what ifs" about the game. Ockham would say in sports, the better team USUALLY wins and, on the evidence, that certainly appeared to be Brazil. A lot of posters seem to imply the US women's team were the better team but somehow were crippled by their coach's decision and a poor card after going 2-0 to a team that showed much better technical skills and tactics.
That is the same sense of entitlement shown by English football supporters, who were looking at all kinds of ridiculous theories after losing to Brazil rather than accepting the obvious, they got beat by a better team.
If blaming Ryan or Scurry makes you feel better, that's fine. It shouldn't mask Brazil's superior technique. Neither should it excuse Solo's behaviour. Bayonetting your teammates and coach shows she didn't have the character to be up to the job in the first place.
Craig Bellamy, it just goes to show! He does havce a pretty good goal/game average though, about a goal every three games in League play and more than that for the FA Cup. (THANKS SOCCERBASE.COM)
Totti made the move from attacking midfielder to forward with aplomb. Who do you thinhk could make that transition?
Watch the 'keepers in the televised Serie A game this Saturday - probably the best game; on paper; on TV this weekend; apret from the Goodison game of course :P - they are both great shot stoppers but they are both prone to almost schoolboy errors.
Does London really wany another Russiam billionare? I'm not an Arse fan but I hope not.
The world cup decision that likely cost the USA the game and a final against the Germans will be dissected and rehashed and second guessed...managers get paid, hired and fired for making those decisions, we don't (unless there is actually a real live manager on the blogsphere?)
:)
Klinsman should replace Yallop next season!
Dodgy offsides easy - sometimes the offside rule is so convoluted and bizarre, like the man said, "If he's not interfering with play what is he doing on the pitch!" What is a tight offside decision, he's either on or off, split second decision, don't try and second guess yourself.
Oh and if you wnat more goals them make the fudging goals bigger - wankers!
I did. Brazil schooled the US from the start. If you watched any games the US had a very diificult time with NK, they were not dominating the opposition in any match.
Yes, Ryan made a tactical error with Solo and his prematch "violent" reference to Brazils' style of play was just inane and sophmoric.
Give credit to Brazil. What's more worrisome to me than losing to a better side is Gulati's comments today. Just typical US Soccer "suit" responses.
no alberta you fail to grasp simple concepts. Its rather simple to see that most posters on here can look at the brasil-usa match in context. The usa were undefeated in 50 some odd games, ranked number onein the world and had a vastly superior head to head record and USSUALLY win against brasil. The are postulating that a decision that looked to backfire on the manager had a detrimental impact on the US team, and contributed to the undefeated number 1 ranked team that USSUally win against this oppnent to lose the game. now it may have been at some point the england were ranked number one in the world and undefeated for 50 games but i dont recall it. but im sure youll continue your winding up here and the observer and the other blogs you contaminate with you presence.
albertagooner -
Beckham pulled out of tackle, Brazil scored and England capitulated - simple really.
Had he not poofed out and made the tackle...who knows.
