Atleti – Would this proposal by Platini affect Spain in the same way that it affects England (in terms of handing a Champions League spot to the Copa del Rey winner)?
Bobby - My understanding is that it would impact on the countries that receive four spots every year.
Curtains – Bert Trautmann wasn't British. He was a German POW before he started playing soccer in England.
Bobby – I think you have to appreciate that Charlton “wrote” the first autobiography in 1964 when they were only a handful of non-British players who had ever played in England. When he said it was his British XI I’m sure he meant it to cover players who had played in Britain rather than actually being British. Trautmann was never capped by West Germany but he did play for and captained the English Football league in a League international. These types of internationals were fairly popular for a time. The teams were based on the league you played in rather than your nationality. I think Denis Law may have played for the Italian League while he was with Torino.
Gaza - Would be nice to hear a comment from you on a subject of Chelsea performance. I think they look really boring, playing this sort of midfield soccer. And what I do not understand is why Shevchenko and Joe Cole are not involved at all. They both showed pretty good form in their international games.
Bobby – I did not watch Chelsea on the weekend as I was flying to Toronto for the MLS game so it would not be fair of me to comment. Having said that I guess my question back to you is what’s the difference between Chelsea’s performances this season so far and their performances over the last three seasons under Mourinho? I didn’t think Cole looked to be anything special against Germany and I didn’t catch Shevchenko against Uzbekistan.
wyofc - If they terminate Yallop (or if he quits) and they do the un-thinkable and hire Klinsmann - what else does the Galaxy need to do to start winning? Also, do you think the next coach will keep Landon or let him go? Is there any chance of them making the playoffs?
Bobby – I think in the case of the Galaxy they need a complete makeover. The bottom line is that they are a very poor team and David Beckham alone is not going to turn them around. I cannot see them making the play offs given their schedule and player pool – rather than battling for a play off spot it is probably a case of avoiding finishing in last place this season. As for Landon Donovan’s future my gut tells me that LA will try to keep him around but if they could use him as trade-bait to strengthen the side overall it might prove to be too tempting to resist.
Therealrico - What is your opinion of Chris Coleman being the Nats head coach? And do you think there is a snowball's chance that would ever happen?
Bobby – It is an intriguing suggestion but I would have to say that it is a real outside chance. Coleman is very much schooled in the UK style and has no experience in international competition as a manager.
MasMaz - Please enlighten me, how can the linesman signal that Schmeichel has come off his line and the referee choose to ignore him?
Bobby – Rightly or wrongly the referee is ultimately the sole judge of decisions and can choose to accept or reject an assistant referee’s call.
Craigyf - What did you watch at the weekend and what results surprised you. You were there; in Toronto; on TV DC United looked formidable and comfortable. How good would you rate them after seeing them in the flesh?
Bobby – I recorded the early game (Liverpool and Sunderland) on DVD and watched it on the plane. The TFC vs. DC United game obviously and then on Sunday large chunks of the Juventus and Inter games. Finished off with United and Spurs and all the highlights on Sunday and Monday when I got back home. I had watched DC United the week before against the Crew and thought that they looked very good in the second half. They’re a team looks very confident in their ability to hold possession by passing the ball – they really hit their rhythm in the 2nd half against Toronto. To beat them you would have to press them very hard for 90 minutes and not allow them to settle - otherwise they will pick you apart.
Craigyf - So how would Platini's plan affect the UEFA CUP? Currently don't you go into the UEFA Cup if you win either of the two English Cups?
Bobby – The UEFA Cup needs a major makeover anyway. They would probably change the criteria so that if a team that finished in the top 3 also won the FA Cup then the FA Cup runner up would qualify for the lesser trophy and the 4th place Premiership team would get a CL spot.
Eponymous - Would like to Bobby to weigh on this - I think UEFA/FIFA needs to make some kind of decision as to the consistency of 3rd party ownership across leagues in Europe (and elswhere).
Bobby – The third-part ownership thing is a real can of worms. Despite what we have heard over the last year or so regarding the Tevez situation third-party ownership is not illegal in England. What does constitute a problem is when a third-party owner retains the right the make a decision regarding the player – for example Player X won’t play this weekend because the third party owner says he is injured and has the contractual right to withdraw the player. However, I would agree that the present situation is a mess and needs FIFA to rule. The problem is that is some areas of the world third party owners provide a real service by helping players get overseas contracts by actively promoting the player to foreign clubs – something that local clubs may be unable to do. Finally I think when you strip away the third party issue with Fernandes you find that it is no different than what has been going on for years – players changing their mind. It’s how Roy Keane finished up at Old Trafford rather than Ewood Park.
Bigdavedisaster – What’s your British 11 all time?
Bobby – Here goes. Criteria post 60’s and 4-3-3 formation. Gordon Banks; Alex Hamilton, John Charles, Bobby Moore, Danny McGrain; George Best, Bobby Charlton, Dave MacKay; Jimmy Johnstone, Denis Law, Jimmy Greaves. Substitutes – Pat Jennings, Paul Madeley (he really could play any position), Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Bryan Robson.
CIAO - I just read that Solskjaer retired due to his long running injury troubles. Have you heard the same? How did you rate him? Even though I dislike United, somehow I became a fan of Ole Gunner. Also do you think SAF will be back in the market for a striker? If so, I would imagine Gudjohnsen would be the perfect replacement -what do you think? I bet SAF is kicking himself for letting Rossi go.
Bobby – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was one of the best pure goal scorers in the last decade or so. However, beyond that I think he will be remembered by United fans for his loyalty. This is a player that had many chances to move away and get regular first team football but opted to stay and fight for his place and to sit on the bench waiting for his chance if need be. The problem that United has it that there is literally only hours left to do a deal and their doesn’t seem to be much on the horizon – there again he may pull a rabbit out of the hat once more although I would surprised if it was Gudjohnsen. He’s more a supporter striker and United need someone who plays up top.
CIAO - What do you make of the following reports: 1. Chelsea are bidding for Ronaldinho 2. Inter are considering loaning out Adriano 3. Inter are considering bidding for Deco I personally think Chelsea might be better off as is. If they do make the bid then I imagine they would need to sell off Ballack. I don't really think Inter will make a bid for Deco, if they had plans to do so they would have already done so... right?
Bobby – Adriano on loan makes sense. As for the Ronaldinho story – a bit late to start making a move I would say. Deco – same thing.
Henry14 - 1.What do you know and can you pass a judgment on what’s going on between Portsmouth and Nugent. 2. Red Rom wants Ronnie do you see it happening by Friday although l do not have an idea why they would wait until the last minute? 3. Who is the better player Martins and Owen as we see them and going into the future if they both stay fit?
Bobby –1. Sometimes a player just doesn’t fit in to a new club and it’s often better to move him on. 2. A move for Ronaldinho makes no sense to me either. And I thought Mourinho was supposed to calling the shots again. 3. A fully fit Michael Owen is a much better player and scorer than Obafemi Martins.
Bobby- What is your initial reaction, and overall synopsis (before it happens) of Yakubu's move to Everton being derailed by not getting a work permitt... Do you think he will win his appeal? Do you think he should win his appeal?
Would England/The UK/The FA (whoever is in charge of this) REALLY not allow a player already in the league to move to a different club already in the league, because that player quit playing for their international team?
leche - I understand it is a formality that the appeal, cited for Wednesday BST, will be heard and adjudicated for in Everton's favour.
Bobby,
206apps 113goals in 6 years (year 1 was just 2 games)
175apps 68goals in 5 years
The stats bear you out Bobby.
But will Michael Owen hit the heights of his Liverpool days ever again and how good can Obafemi Martins become?
Much as I like Owen he's not as good as Lineker was - 462(244) / 80(48)
I have tried not to take Henry's exit too personally but more stories keep popping up to insinuate that he is not exactly the character we all thought he was. Galliani (AC Milan VP) claims he went to Barca for the extra 50% in wages. Henry told us it was for footballing reasons. Changes a few perspectives:
1) He left Arsenal to win (in Europe) because he had lost faith in Wengers plans
2) Chelsea have become more dominant and spurred on Man U but Arsenal looked to regress in terms of personel
3) He really does believe Arsenal can challenge for the League or in Europe or he simply could have stayed
4) He could not stand the fact that less talented players in Chelsea earned in the same pay-bracket as he... I mean, talent for pound, Jon Terry (Meat Head), the highest earner in England!?
5) Arsenal is better off! He is not going to find whatever it is in Barca but begin their own Galactico era which as we have learned from Real Madrid, can only work in England (stupid Chelsea
).
This weekend sees the second round of games in the FA Cup ,the preliminary round.
I would like to suggest Croydon FC as the team to follow.
Two weeks ago in the extra preliminary round Croydon FC of the Kent league premier division (tier 9 of English football) where drawn away to Saltdean Utd of the Sussex league ,for some reason Saltdean where removed by the FA ,I can find no explanation anywhere.
This week in an all Kent league matchup Croydon are away to Slade Green .
Should the Trams come through this round they will be just eleven wins from Wembley.
"A fully fit Michael Owen is a much better player and scorer than Obafemi Martins."
Asking Michael Owen to be fully fit is a lot, Bobby. Martins scored 17 goals last year for Newcastle, more than Owen has bagged for any club since 2004, when he scored 19 for Liverpool. Even at 27, it appears the law of diminishing returns now applies in Owen's case. The Magpies would be crazy to get rid of Martins.
I am amused by Mr. Maradona's comment that he hates the USA. However, perhaps he should clarify this statement. If he really hates what the USA usually stands for, perhaps the controlled substances he used to ingest have permanentsly addled his brain. On the other hand, if he means that he intensely dislikes current American foreign policy of the Bush administration, he is in very good company with about 2/3rd of the US population, including nearly all of the (liberal AND conservative) intelligentsia, so his comment would just be imprecise, instead of plain ridiculous.
Do you think that Beckham is a great player or a celebrity because it seems to me that he is more a celebrity then a soccer player. And do you think that Beckham is too good to be playing in the MLS?

We covered the Maradona comment already, stujonesmd. Click here for it, check out the comments. Let's not open that can of worms again, please. Someone asked Bobby what he thought about the comments and Bobby rightly responded, "I spend as much time thinking about what Maradona says about America as I would if Madonna commented on the latest Argentine national team performance."
1. Helb, thoughts? Personally he annoys me. He runs into people, falls down, takes approximatly 18.34 more touches than is needed and shanks shots.
2. Roskicy[sp?] same deal. He looks a good player but he's hurt all the time. Does he just need to drink more milk?
3. Finally I think I heard your favorite team was Dundee. If they said we could get Messi and Riquleme but we'd have to re-morgage the stadium and charge everyone 10 bucks for water down beer would you be in favor of it?
Bobby, would you know if Norman Whiteside's autobiography will be available in North America? He is one of my all time favorites ever to play for Man. United and would love to get my hands on his book.
Thanks for the reply - I agree that Fernandes changed his mind and it happens all the time. Still, it has stung us Everton supporters who thought he had the potential to be a very good player playing for us. A shame, too, as he will likely not see as much playing time for Valencia vis-a-vis Everton.
Signing Yakubu has lessened the sting somewhat, but for Everton to progress they need more quality in the midfield.

Robbo, try ebay for your book or Amazon.co.uk and get it shipped.
I think Platini has lost the plot. All we need with his idea is a championship side to win an FA cup and they would then be in a champions league group? The whole thing is laughable and if he is so missing the cup winners cup then he should resurrect it.
Great show for those who listened in and those who called in!
Redfan-I disagree totally and lets not kid ourselves not only do the championship side have to win the FA Cup but they also have to qualify in a much harder qualifying round. That means they earned it.
Why stop at Yallop? He didn't trade all of the youth away for Lalas' old buddies to come and play with David Beckham. Let's trade a couple of young 20's for Chris Kline. Let's trade away Kevin Hartman plus another young player for a goalie that has been marginally better and will retire in two years. If your going to bring in World Class players, pair them up with younger ones so they can learn, not old dogs from the MLS that can't learn anything new.
socal completely agree, I have no idea why they got rid of Hartman, I think he is one of the most underrated keepers, and deserves some looks from Europe, and more opportunities with the national team.
I just had a chance to read the David James article. I used to dive on my bed and drive my folks nuts, as a kid, also. It was a nice response to the previous weeks article. Bobby - thanks for smothing my ruffled feathers.
Bobby since we're discussing Monsieur Platini, what do you make of his remarks about foreign ownership of EPL teams? Mark Hughes alluded to it as well during a broadcast of EPL review. In my personal opinion, if the US owners of Liverpool had taken that $342.7 million and invested it in MLS, it wouldn't hurt. However, as Platini mentioned during the interview, it's not about the love of the game but rather business ventures.
Harakiri totally suprised that you would talk bad about Helb as much as he can be frusrating this season so far he has been amazing was a candidate for p.o.t.m in every game in the Epl so far.
Good win 4 Arsenal. The mid seems to have realized that they need to score. Hope they keep it up.
I know you are tight with the league folks over in the UK, can you put in a word that we'd love to see west ham away to sheffield utd in the carling cup draw saturday?
About 10 of you played my EPL predictions game last week. Scores ranged from "embarrassing" to "really lucky"(Lech010). The BBC's Mark Lawrenson joined in though he didn't know he did.
You're all welcome to outsmart/outguess! your fellow bloggers and post your EPL predictions! Click here to join in the game.
Since seeing Seville last season and knowing that they are in C.L I always new we would meet in the C.L. and I bet you if Arsenal go far we will meet Henry and Barca somewhere. Arsenal Seville game is a must see. But fair group 4 Arsenal.
Totti will get a chance to redeem himself after his worst day as a footballer last year. Those 2 games will be must see games ManUre Roma i.e. Tricky group though.
Group E will be very entertaining I don't know much about Rangers but the other teams all play very entertaining football.
Why the mid fielder of the year went to Seerdof and not Pirlo I don't know.
Just saw the champions league draw dont u think the man. united vs sportin lisbon game is gonna be a cracker. With Ronaldo and Nani playing to prove a point.
Ringo, I don't think Rangers will make it out either. That group has Chelsea and Valencia written all over it. Valencia seem to be on a downturn at the moment; however, they too have made some great purchases this summer. I think Valencia will be a force to recon with. I just hope after the group stateges Inter doesn't have to play them. Valencia always seems to get the better of an Inter match up
I am very curious how Roma will fair this year. They have brought in some great players to help build the team. I think Juan, not equal, but good cover for Chivu. Giuly playing with the likes of Totti, Mancini, Perotta and DeRossi is also very exciting. I can't wait. United will have a tougher time this year against Roma. I think Roma this year is a much better team. Some other notable transfers this summer for Roma were Cicinho (DF), Nonda (FW), Kuffour (DF), Brighi (MD) and last but not least Esposito (MF). I rate Brighi highly and he should provide depth to the team to cover for DeRossi or Perrota.
Group A is one of the only that look wide open enough. Teams are actually good enough to beat each other up, and knock each other around... I'd expect Liverpool to win the group, but I don't expect more that a point or 2 to seperate the last 3.
Group B: Chelsea are almost sure to advance, Valencia and Schalke fighting for 2nd, but Rosenborg isn't going to challenge anyone.
Group C: Real Madrid look to be the only team with enough quality to advance anyway. Bremen, Lazio, and Olympiacos fighting for 2nd.
Group D: Same as Group C, Milan should dominate the group, Not much seperates Celtic, Benfica, and Shaktar... The team of these 3 that advances will be the one that takes some points from Milan...
Group E: Looks too predictable, Barca and Lyon should advance easily, Stuttgart and Rangers fighting for a UEFA Cup spot
Group F: United would appear to be the class, but with the way they are playing, who knows. Group looks similar to what it did a couple of years ago when United finished 4th behind Villareal, Benfica, and Lille... Although I can't see United not advancing, Second place should go down to the last game...
Group G: It's on Inter and PSV to lose. They should qualify easily
Group H: Easiest draw of the stage for Arsenal. Steau and Slavia shouldn't threaten them, or Sevilla/AEK.
I can beleive you said a fit michael Owen is a better player them martins, are you kidding me, I am shocked and cant beleive you were objective there, maybe you were just being a patriot or something.
Michael has only scored one goal in nearly three years whether playing for England or New castle. What are your facts?. Besides been bought from Madrid for 17 Million pounds. Please!!!!!!
How about strike rate, or goals scored. Check the facts when Owen was Martins age he was scoring more than every other game, unfortunately he is done now.
Ciao, the best midfield I've seen this season is the Giallorosso.
Stunning, pushed by Bayern but nothing in England has looked half as good, that said I haven't seen la Liga and Serie A is only a week old.
Urielvc, page up and check the stats, Owen's are better than Martins'
Can Michael Owen get back to his pre-injury form? A Valid question, but then he is still only 27; retty much coming into his peak.
Thing is both a playing for the toon!
mazmaz,
Barcelona's opponents are tougher than man utd (bookies odds) but they will win their group much easier than the mancs.
Inter will breeze their group.
Ringo - I can't see either of the old firm clubs getting out of their groups.
gabemar - group e is only the group of death for ranger, Barca will top that group for sure.
Gunners4 - so how well do you know Platini that you can dislike him personally? Do you mean you don't like his policies?
senor barca - not only is the Premier Lesgue a valuable home grown asset financially but millions of fans hold their football clubs very close to their hearts, some dodgy ex thai Prime minister isn't going to give two hoots about the second!
Picture almost half the NFL run by foreign investors.
Platini's idea of balance is good but his way of providing this balance is not brilliant.giving championsleague spots to cup winners is ridiculous. i do not agree that spain, italy nor england should get four spots, a simple formula is to do exactly what the championsleague claim itself to be that is a competition of champions not third place n fourth place losers(liverpool, arsenal, lazio, valencia, bremen). you win your league as a small european country you play with other small european countries for your spot.with the big five leagues(germany, england, italy, spain, france)getting two spots automatically. other nations like holland, portugal, denmark, sweden, ukraine, greece etc getting one spot. At least this formula is in keeping with being a league of top performing European league teams.
