Henry14 - I do not know if its your company policy Bobby that you are not supposed to say that MLS is poor, because if you read nick ' article you would have thought MLS is like the Prem. l do not see Becks in the near future, because in my opinion the MLS is more of a league that is based on passion and euphoria rather than quality. The defending and general play is generally appalling; the league is just not good enough as fantasy manager with Juan Pablo Angel will testify.

Bobby – In the twenty years I have been involved in the media end of things no one has told to say or not say anything so if there is such a policy it hasn’t been brought to my attention. As far as only watching “quality” football then you must be a connoisseur compared to me. I can enjoy watching the game played at all levels.

Venti_vidi_vici - What is your take on the goings on at Stamford Bridge? What will Chelsea look like in three months time, will they sign anybody important, who will leave? Reportedly during a strategic meeting last week to discuss summer transfer targets etc., Abramovich apparently drastically cut spending, removed himself from day-to-day operations of the club, Lampard and Terry still don't have a new contract, and Mourinho wasn't even in the meeting. I guess just like a spoiled kid, his new expensive toy isn't as much fun anymore, and is amazingly making a mess of a very fine football club.

Bobby – Chelsea is a bit of a freak show at the moment. With all the speculation and rumour mongering I would not be surprised to find out that Elvis has been spotted at Stamford Bridge. Let’s just wait and see.

djnimaI just have one question and one question only this week. Who do you think deserves to win La Liga this year? and please don't say whoever has the most points and head to head records. Also, when is Rupert Murdoch going to give you your own show?

Bobby – It is probably one of these seasons when no team deserves it because Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla have all suffered through some pretty poor results. I picked Real Madrid at the start of the season and I will stick with that pick. As for a show – between the two shows a week and the blog I am busy enough as it is. But I will be asking for blog ideas, preference etc in the next few days.

Venti_vidi_vici - Where does Milan rank in terms of all time great football clubs? Over the past half century they have been incredibly successful - are they possibly the greatest ever? What is the key to their success over the past twenty years? Berlusconi? In the past twenty years they have reached eight UCL finals, next best is a Serie B team with four, and their five titles are two better than anyone. Their players always seem to love the club, they've always had a lot of Italian players in the team, and they seem to get the best out of their players, and make their players into champions?

Bobby –One of all time great teams – absolutely. The greatest ever? An argument as fruitless as trying choosing the greatest ever heavyweight. Weren’t Milan in Serie B a while back as well?

MeanSuckaI saw someone on Sky Sports (Alan Mullery, a former England player from the 60's) talking about Beckham not getting the proper training to stay on England's team past this week's call-up. In the process he called MLS a Mickey Mouse league and said it's only slightly better than the Conference - a sentiment echoed in the Lovejoy column. That's a little harsh, I thought. What do you think - how does MLS compare to England's divisions?

I would like to think that MLS is on the level of the Championship or at least League One, especially considering results of some of our players overseas and our team internationally.

And speaking of MLS, I tend to think sometimes that it is not as good defensively as it should be. I continue to see flat footed defenders giving goal scorers ample opportunities to finish. Do you think defense is a problem in this league?

Bobby – Your average former-player-now-pundit in Britain doesn’t know the difference between his arse and a hole in the road when it comes to anything outside of English football. The major short coming of the MLS is the lack of depth and that will take some time to rectify. There are some very good North American based players in the MLS (proven by the number that have moved overseas) but there are a number who would struggle to get a game in League Two. But there again you could look at Jay Demerit who was playing A League and started regularly in the Premiership so there are examples of it working both ways.

It is interesting that when Capello arrived at Real Madrid he was appalled at the shape the team was in physically which would seem to indicate that Beckham wasn’t getting the kind of training in Spain either. No doubt Mullery believes that only good English coaches can get English players fit.

Given the choice between watching a league with good defenders and bad forwards and bad defenders and good forwards which would you prefer?

Atleti female - I've heard a lot of good things about an Arsenal player called Francisco Merida Perez (aka 'Fran Merida). Some are dubbing him Arsenal's new wonderkid. What have you read about him? Do you think he is in the same level of ability as other wonderkids, such as Jonathan dos Santos and Bojan Krkic?

Bobby – Until you mentioned him I had heard nothing about him. I am a bit leery of wunderkids – is it just me or are there more of them around? – so I prefer to just wait and see. The Champions magazine this month had a piece that linked players with past stars i.e. the new Pele, the new Maradona etc.

Meansucka - What do you make of this FIFA ruling that games may no longer be played at altitude above 8200 feet? I read that one of the Brazilian club teams were upset that they had to play in Bolivia with freezing rain at altitude. But to me - it seems home field advantage is the reason you play a home and away leg to begin with and if they eliminate altitude, why not also look at air quality, temperature, or other factors? Why has this become a problem now?

Bobby – To answer in reverse I think it has become an issue as more clubs and countries have been or have been threatening to take games to higher elevations in order to get an even greater advantage. While FIFA claim it is far medical reasons it is more likely down to lobbying by Brazil and Argentina. Having said that I could see how playing at some of these elevations could be dangerous. However, you do make a good point about air quality. In Mexico City it is the combination of altitude and air quality that makes it so challenging.

Carneade - What would you change in soccer to improve the game? I'm not talking so much about the rules of the game itself (even though I do think that the goal size and the pitch width should be increased), I'm referring to max number of players in rosters, domestic and international schedules, number of games per year, national teams, refs and instant replay etc.

Bobby – I think FIFA’s desire to have leagues maxxed at 16 teams is a good one. How you ensure that the clubs don’t fill the vacant dates with other stuff is another issue. I would also find a way to curtail the World Cup and European Championship qualifying schedules – it would be an easy fix. I would also like to see the Gold Cup and Copa America consolidated into a true Cup of the Americas.

Henry14 - Can anyone tell me why Carragher is seen as a great defender, because for me he is highly overrated. He plays for an extremely defensive minded team and he is not usually exposed, l do not think he is as good as Gallas, Toure, Rio, Vidic, Carvalho, Terry, so why do pundits rave about this guy?

Bobby – Because he is a great central defender. He reads the game well, makes few mistakes and is a great tackler. Apart from that I can understand why you wouldn’t rate him.

Henry 14 - Have you ever considered having a Bobby McMahon weekly podcast, because surely you have a lot of friends who are journalist or football experts and talk about football thoughts. The two hours you have a week do not exhaust all burning soccer issues, because you are one of the best and rationale football pundits l have met rather than a lot of so called Liverpool biased pundits we have all over the world.

Bobby – Thank you for the kind words. Hold that suggestion as I will be asking for some input in the next days in terms of the blog.

CIAO Do you think Buffon will leave Juventus? Also have you heard whether or not Inter are ready to split with Julio Cesar and Toldo? If so, and Buffon doesn't transfer who would they get -Amelia?

Bobby – It is strange that after spending a season in Serie B that Buffon would leave but I have heard that there is a strong possibility that he will move. I have not heard anything on the Toldo / Cesar front but you would expect that neither of them is particularly happy with the situation. Your suggestion of Amelia moving from Livorno to Juventus is an interesting one and one that would make a lot of sense. He is young for a goalkeeper and if he stays at Livorno then Champions League football is a pipe-dream. Probably a good time for a move and I would expect him to stay in Italy rather than moving to another country.

In regard to the comments by pundits/journalist`s in England about MLS and the Galaxy (and on many other topics) ,there is a term that describes them perfectly ,they are "little englanders" ,all they know or care about is England and all things English.
I know this because I was the same way until I came to the US ,and especially football wise ,before FSW and The Report came on the air.

On calciomercato.com I read that Amelia is most likely moving to Palermo. There was also a report indicating that Buffon will most likely stay at Juventus. Which, as you pointed out, makes sense after spending a year in Serie B with Juve.

I also read that Milan plan on bringing Abbiati back to the club. Which would give them cover for Dida. I think Abbiati could steal the spot from Dida.

I read that Recoba is likely headed to Atletico Madrid. Saying that he doesn't want to play against Inter.

Figo is back tracking from the Saudi deal. Maybe this is a good opportunity for the MLS to step in...

Crespo is pushing for Tevez to sign with Inter. Saying that who ever signs Tevez would win the championship.

Bobby,
is it true that Chelsea could sell Robben? If so, is Beyern the likely destination?

Too bad that Beyern waited this long to invest any money into the team. It should fun to watch them next year with Toni and Ribery there. And more transfers to come.

I also find it interesting to see how Sam is shaking things up at Newcastle.
Bobby, do you think Owen or Martins can play together or will one of them be sold?

Bobby,
This was Mehmet Scholl's last year with Bayern. Unfortunately, I didn't get to watch a lot of games of his. However, I really enjoyed the ones I did. How do you rate him as a player?

Good point about 'wonderkids', Bobby.

I heard the Recoba-Atleti rumor, CIAO. I don't know much about him except that he's 31. As long as he puts goals in the back of the net that's all that matters, of course. Let's see if the transfer goes through.

Man Utd have signed Anderson from Porto and Nani from Sporting Lisbon.

Bobby, do you have any insight on these two lads as players?

I've heard EXCELLENT things about Nani-- at one point, Atletico Madrid wanted to sign him. He only wanted to sign for Manchester United though, to join compatriot Ronaldo.

Congrats on your new players!

I don't know all that much about Nani. Anderson is the next Ronaldinho, Zico, Pele etc. He started with Gremio and scored 5 goals in the South American Under-17 Championships in 2005 and then added the Golden Ball at the FIFA under-17's in Peru. In 36 games for Brazil under 17s he scored 18 goals. Great shot and incredibly quick he signed for Porto in December 2005.
Source - Champions Magazine. According to World Soccer he needs to toughen up a bit and tends to be a bit inconsisitent - not really surprising in a youngster.
Was looked upon as the replacemnent for Diego when he moved to Werder Bremen.

MrRedDevil,
Let us rejoice in these two signings...youth and skill! Just what was needed. I have seen both play and I will agree with Bobby on Anderson. If he gets at all consistent look out! Nani always surprised me that he wasn't at all rumored..at least that I heard, to be on the move or the radar screen of EPL. Nice early move. Does that mean that SAF has his three?

Bobby, with Man United's move today and the Ownen H. signing (one defensive midfielder and two offensive mids) One could argue that Gigg's replacement has been signed and a Keane like stopper is now on board (note the word "like", in Owen H.)and someone to accompany Rooney up front (Anderson) where is the replacement for Scholes? I am in no hurray to see him go but I haven't seen that Center Mid signing yet. Do you see it coming this year?

or you could look at Carrick slipping into a Scholes role - although without the same offensive skills but a better tackler. Or, Anderson if he replaced Diego, could be the new Scoles. I think a new striker is likely the next move if I was asked to guess.

Obviously, as a United fan, I'm thrilled by these signings and how quickly they are happening, but I wonder what happened to that statement about "3" new signings from SAF. A striker is definately still needed and all indications point to Huntelaar being the next target. So was "3" just dissinformation from Sir Alex or is Anderson to be considered risky and therefor not one of the three? I'm somewhat leery of Brazilian midfielders after Kleberson.

As for the Scholes Giggs replacement theory - Neville is 32 so could we see two more signings to coplete the infusion of new for old? (Huntelaar and..... Micah Richards??? Man City to United???)

Bobby - do you think that there is a real possibility of such a rare and generally unthinkable transfer?

Also, is all this investment in midfield SAF trying to crack the 4-5-1 problem/inability they have had, for use in CL? Hargreaves at holding, Giggs/Nani at left, Scholes/Anderson and Carrick attacking, and Ronaldo on right. Would this be, in your opinion, a good idea?

Bobby, absolutely agree with everything you said about 16 team premiership, less country-level qualifiers etc. I also detect that you think that even if there were less games then greed would take over and maybe there would be more friendlies or something.

Is your thinking the same as mine that having way too many games actually robbed us of a top quality finish to the end of the season, between the top teams? The RM/Barca finish could be coincidental but it could also be to do with the extended season and more recovery time, plus of course they played less.

I was wondering if they held the European club championships at the beginning of the season it would be better ... before the leagues started. It would be closer to the time when the results decided their selection. All the players would be fresh from a rest. It would take pressure of all the mid-week travel during the winter mid season and it would not impact any revenues. In order to fit all the games in say a month, it would probably mean cutting out the league component and just making UCL & UEFA cups knockouts again.

What's your thoughts, Bobby, others?
Would it work and raise the standards or would it make the league that follows an anti-climax?
Would it be too hot to play in Southern Europe in August – even at night?

ulsterson - defenders in genral should last a bit longer so I would be surprised if a Neville replacement is on this summer's radar. Is Bardsley coming back to Old Trafford after a season on loan? Fergie might still see him as a replacement. I don't think Ferguson would agree that 4-5-1 failed particularly in Europe. He got goals from all over the place and I can't see him necessarily changing that although having other viable options is always good. With players coming in we have to expect that others will leave which is the next thing we will start to read about. Paying transfer fees is one thing but the wages that come with that will have to be matched with players exiting. I suspect the name Kieran Richardson might come up. Heinze to Spain is getting more column inches and Solksjaer will likely depart. It may be time for Silvestre to go as well although in Heinze leaves then it might make more sense keeping him around.

LACF – Some good points and interesting debatable suggestions. You are right – I do believe that if calendar dates were created the clubs would just look upon them as additional revenue opportunities. I think that there are strong indications from the last two World Cups and the 2004 European Championships that the top players are reaching these tournaments knackered and it is showing in the quality of the play. These tournaments will continue to draw mass audiences but I think you really have to ask the question as to whether or not we are seeing players producing their best performances on the big stages.

IMO there is not a hope that the European club tournaments will ever return to straight knock out and they certainly will not be played at the start of the season. It would start taking on the look of a pre-season tournament and the TV revenues would melt away. You are never going to attract the existing audiences if the tournaments were played in August. Add to the fact that even if you reverted to a straight knock out it would still take at least take six weeks to complete. Then we would sit around all winter with no European midweek football. You would also have the situation that every two seasons a World Cup/European Championship would be followed less than a month later by the European Cup. To me, the focus should be on 16 teams leagues.

Bobby, Do you see Rossi coming back to Old Trafford next season? That may solve SAF's striker needs. It will be interesting to see who goes and who stays now. With the crumbling defense at the end of the season and the Hienze rumors, is the backline capable without Hienze and Silvestre and an aging Neville?
Why is Foster (keeper)thought to be the heir apparent between the posts? I don't see it? (I know with the knee surgery it may not happen now)

Thanks Bobby. Yes that idea didn't work ... It would make it seem like a lame preseason ... and I'm sure they'd like to increase the league portion of the UCL not get rid of it. Your other points are well made.

Here's another tack that a shorter 16 team league might bring, given that there could be an April finish again, like there used to be. You could still keep the league part of the Euros mixed with the domestic leaugue schedule as now, and have the final stage of the two European club competitions as a post season.

After a weeks gap following the conclusion of the domestic competitions, the final stage of the two European club competitions could commence. The last four (max of 3 games each), or eight(5 games each) could be done in 2-3 weeks, with some logistics challenges. It doesn't fix the attrition from accumulated injuries, but if they got smart a club winning a domestic double and European trophy would play 30 leagur games, 7 dometic cup (at least in England) 13 European in the current format. Assuming the top clubs came to their senses and played the reserves in the league cup.

Chelsea played 64 games out a possible 65 max. In this above format they'd have played 51 (they had a cup replay). Playing 13 games less over the same period would make a huge difference (just look at the quality of play in La Liga.) If you approve of the proposal, please call Michelle P and have him organize for us in time for next season.

There's simply no way that leagues would ever adopt a 16 team league. Let's not pretend that clubs aren't business entities, so the lost gate of 4 home games (plus tv money that comes with the 8 games in the season) would have to be made up with either friendlies and/or ticket price increases, both of which are bad ideas. As an American, I'd just as rather get rid of international football altogether. That has as much a chance as happening as 16-team leagues. The best thing to do (in England) would be to scrap the over-congested Christmas period and extend the season a la La Liga (which won't happen either, but is certainly more realistic). Also, get rid of international friendlies. I think they're completely useless anyway, especially for England, where even when they lose a friendly the media goes ballistic.

As you know the English have this inbred fantasy that it's their game and the have a right to be the best nationally and have the best league competition. They flat out can't have both, and it creates a total no-win situation. On top of everything else, they can't ever have the physical climate or mentality to attract the top skill players (despite the money). They want to live in the sun (like I do) and in a sympathetic environment.

The International friendlies are not friendlies. In the past if England were to beat Brazil in a "friendly" the headlines would read like "England wins world cup"- justice finally done" For the media there are no friendlies. Like you, I wish they'd get rid of them, but it's another money thing, (just like you rightly stated on the loss of 8 league games).

You really can't compare with the the US. Here it's uniquely insular compared to being in a European country. Living in LA is like being marooned on an Island sometimes. England v Germany, Italy is massive.

If you’re saying that this is all unfixble, then all we can do is enjoy the upturn in the standard, from the money that’s brought to the EPL. Even after watching a lot of La Liga, overall I still prefer the depth and excitement of the EPL v the skill and foul play in Spain.

LACF- I agree with alot of what you say, except I think the great thing about the UCL is the league type play between the Euro giants, I mean thats what we all love isn't it?

-They will never shorten the leagues, they should to at least 18, its just too much money.

-I know its yough on them but I absolutely love the EPL's winter schedule, especially boxing day!

-We can all agree that they play too many games at the expense of the form and health of the players.

-I predict we will see more big names, who have already accomplished things for their countries back out of some competitions like Ronaldinho this year in the Copa. It will be tough for some fans to take but they have to do it. If the managers will let them, think that #### Domenech.

you forgot "getting rid of nuclear weapons"...

Anyway, when I said to get rid of the int'l friendlies, I did so because they're too mismanaged. To me, friendlies (with the sole exception of pre-tourney ones) should consist of trying different tactics and players out (mixed with the "stars" because playing an 'A' side for one half and a 'B' side the next is stupid) so you can fine-tune what your best XI are and how to use them. However, that will NEVER happen, so we may as well do away with the midseason friendlies.

Also, I think this was mentioned by someone, but the qualification process for major tournaments should be tweaked. Do we really need to have Liechtenstein, San Marino, all of Oceania now that Austalia has left, Grenada, Dominica, Faroe Islands, Suriname, Guinea-Bissau, Djibouti, etc. play with the "big" teams from the start of qualification?

LACF, what does "...(England) can't ever have the physical climate or mentality to attract the top skill players (despite the money)" mean? Wasn't the EPL by far the most represented league at the WC last summer? If by "skill players" you mean South American wingers, maybe so, but when I think about the money that obviously does attract players like Henry, Drogba, Ballack, Ronaldo, etc. it makes your statement seem a little strange. Spain and Italy will always have a larger percentage of latin players, just as Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans seem happier in Germany, but the EPL is quite obviously the league with the greatest variety of internationals. The weather may suck but I guess $50,000 a week buys a nice umbrella.

Also why isn't Ribery coming to Arsenal? It seems like a great move unless Henry leaves. I heard he might be going to Inter to rejoin Viera. And it sounds like Eto'o want to go to liverpool (cant imagine why)

Ttoes: I just think it's tough for a highly skilled player to really show there skills to their best ability on slow soggy pitch on a on a cold rainy night in Blackburn (especially while holding an umbrella!). It has to make a difference the type of football that is physcially possibke.

Of course the EPL is a great league and the money attract and the big clubs have attracted the stars and great talent. They are makeing the EPL what it is. I think it's also easier for people to play in countries which have the same or closer affinity to their own lifestyle and to the type of play theri brought up with. All I'm saying that everything else being equal I suspect someone like Kaka would pick Milan over Man U.

if anyone does have the money to buy a club. i urge them to buy a mid or low level club and build the team up. Why not create a team to challenge the top four...

So, in England, I would recomend bringing back the glory days to Nottingham Forrest. It would make my father happy.

In Italy, I would buy Brescia and make Baggio the Technical Director or coach, which ever he wants.

Turkey, I would buy a team named Altay. Because it is close to a beach town.

Germany, 1860 Munchen

Spain, Espanyol because they are from Barcelona

MLS, I'd bring a team to Seattle and import some players from Europe so I can watch a freakin live pro game...

I am very sorry for liverpool because aluas has started his campaign for trying to over price players, he said if liverpool want malouda they have to pay 25m pounds, which l found ridicoulos.wenger claims he has not found the right player so next season l will have to watch very few arsenal games to save my self from the heart break

If Wenger does not buy at least 2 big time players then I will be pissed. What is he saying? If they don't have the money then why are they not courting a new owner. Apparently they are happy with upper echelon mediocrity.

What a joke.

l do not think it wenger who does not want to spend , but if he is told that you need to spend 10m pounds = other players being sold as your budget, he will work with that.arsenal want to finish paying their stadium debt as quickly as possible. that is why he does not have money

Bobby what do you make of norman hurbad's comments that michael owen is not a striker a top 4 prem side should conside.we see it with all top four clubs , they like striker who are technical and can virtually operate in multiple position.what is your take on micheal owen

lastly l think a lot of becks perfomances in madrid are reported rather than seen in the uk.to call beckham's last four or so games stunning would really be overwritting the script.there is no doubt he has looked good in the last games , but how will eto'o 's assist in the athletico game.

Lyon's overcharging for their players...YAWN...what else is new? Frankly, I'm not sure about Malouda after reading his statements. He said that a number of clubs were after him and he couldn't be bothered too much with which club sign him. He seems a player that isn't going to care too much about results (especially playing a game in cold rain in Blackburn in January), but rather about lining his own pocket.

For sure Rafa likes a big skwad, so there will be possibilities, no?

Re: tour bus (I couldn't resist).

I don't get audio at my computer at work, but it was still funny. At least they'll save some money on paint next season when they notch their sixth ;-)

Bobby with all of the mid field players coming into United, I would think that it will be time to start unloading some. Do you think that Fletcher will remain. Also apparntly Foster will be out for the start of the season, there was some rumors over United going after the Hearts goalie, will this now be more of a priority. In addition the striker situation still has to be addressed
I think there wll be great resistance to the reduction in any league, EPL is at 20 now and I cannot see any club voting for a reduction that could see them relegated as well as a reduction in gate/tv revenue

Pretty short sighted thing to say about Malouda Verbal.

He is a great player, a proven winner.

Maybe he just understands that he could end up anywhere.

Perhaps Malouda will end up in Juventus. They will need to build a decent squad for 07/08 season.

In other news, Atletico Madrid has been invited to play in the 'Amsterdam Tournament' in August. They'll play Ajax and then Lazio in the second round. It'll be good pre-season practice.

Osasuna have officially signed Swiss midfielder Xavier Margairaz.

Rumor Mill: It appears they are close to signing Gimnàstic Tarragona's key striker Javier Portillo because on loan Soldado will most likely return to Real Madrid.

Also in the Rumor Mill: Apparently Milan will go after Barcelona's Edmilson 'IF' they cannot nab Real Madrid's Emerson.

Verbal I have considered litigation and I think I will let it slide this time, LiverFool.

Apparently I get touchy regarding Arsenal, Becks or the French national side. I am workng on it.
