Leeds on the brink of relegation to League One
Apr 28, 2007 | 6:11PM | report this

A question from atleti_female " are there any similarities between Leeds' relegation slump and Nottingham Forest's relegation in 05/06"?

atleti – A good question. I would say that when Forest were relegated in 1993 it was looked upon as the end of a typical cycle albeit a cycle that had, in the case of Forest, been more successful than anyone could have imagined. You have to take into consideration that between 1963 and 1993 only Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal had spent the entire time in the top flight. The likes of Manchester United, Spurs, Chelsea and Leeds had all been relegated during that period. Forest bounced back only to be relegated again in 1997 and it was after that they dug themselves into a deep financial hole.

Forest spent a lot of money on some very bad players especially when David Platt  was in charge. There was a spell with Paul Hart as manager when they looked as if they were going to rebound and at one point they made it to the Championship play offs only to lose in the semi final. Good young players were sold – Jermaine Jenas and Michael Dawson come to mind - and lacking resources their play deteriorated and then they dropped to the old third division.

The Leeds problem was a lot more complex although money – or the owing of it – has been the overwhelming issue. Leeds “business model” was based on spending – or borrowing through various means - gobs of money on players (normally young players who would improve) in order to establish the club as a major force in England and Europe and to then reap the massive financial rewards. The assumption was that if things turned for the worse then the players could be sold and the money spent – or the money borrowed to buy the players – could be recouped.

It all started to go wrong the season they reached the Champions League semi final only to lose to Valencia. They overreached and failed to finish in the top four in the Premiership that same season and so missed a CL spot for the next season. Although the Bosman ruling had come down in 1996 the full ramifications took a number of years to filter through the system and it was around 2001 that clubs began to fully understand that the ruling meant a major change in the way that they needed to do business. Instead of paying large fees to a club they could wait for a contract to end and then get the player without a transfer fee – e.g. Sol Campbell to Arsenal from Spurs. The other possibility was to pick up a player for a mere pittance of a transfer fee if they were in the last 12 months of their deal.

Essentially Leeds was operating on a model that considered players as assets that at least held their value and hopefully increased in value. The reality was that with the exception of a few of the very best players, fees paid for players became sunk costs and in most cases players were actually depreciating assets. Interestingly the only case I can think of when the Leeds model actually paid off was in the case of Rio Ferdinand who they made a significant profit on after buying him from West Ham and selling to Manchester United.

Leeds situation also included the infamous Bowyer/Woodgate alleged assault on an Asian student that went to court. Then Manager David O’Leary wrote a book that included significant comment on the case and a lot of Leeds fans and observers believe that O’Leary’s decision to sell his opinion undermined morale in the dressing room and so began a death spiral. As clubs realized that Leeds were desperate to raise cash the more they hedged knowing that the longer they waited the lower the fee became.

Even with new ownership Leeds has been unable to break free of the debt monster. While maintaining some of the highest – if not the highest – ticket prices outside of the Premiership the debts that remain have essentially crippled the club. Last season Leeds came close to regaining a Premiership position but it proved to be a false dawn. Now life in League One beckons.

Ringo, were you at the Bridge when G Best scored an amazing goal v Chelsea after a wall pass with Bobby Charlton? He volleyed with the outside of his left foot from just out from the right corner of the penalty area. True Genius. Never seen a video of it.

The Youtube videos bring it all back.

I don`t remember that one!
The only time I saw him play for Man U at the Bridge,he got sent off,and it was almost impossible to get sent off in those days.
I saw him playing for Fulham a lot of times,I used to support Fulham when we didn`t have a game.
One game I will never forget,Chelsea v Fulham,Boxing day `76,old second division.George Best,Rodney Marsh and I think,Bobby Moore where playing and thanks mainly to them we had a crowd of 55,000!

Birmingham and Sunderland are back in the EPL.
It will be interesting to see if Sunderland can beat their own record...Again...for fewest points in a season!
And I wonder how long Keano will last!

I predict good things from Sunderland next season. Roy Keane has proven himself in the Championship and I'm sure he can't wait to take on the big boys of the EPL.

News coming thick and fast. Allardyce resigns citing "personal reasons." I am not convinced that the Luca Toni story is true but I guess we will find out. Porto lost to Boavista so if the Lisbon finishes in a win for one of the teams then Porto's lead becomes either 1 or 2 points. PSV take the Dutch league on gola difference after finishin in a tie with Ajax. AZ lost to a 90th minute goal to Excelsior as the pushed for a winner that would have given them the title. And with B'ham and Sunderland definetly moving up to the Premiership, Billy Davies is heading to the play offs again - this time with Derby.

The Toni transfer does sound a bit odd.

I'm watching Sevilla v Espanyol right now. Espanyol's Kameni must be one of the most underrated goalkeepers in Spain. I've seen him pull off some phenomenal saves this season. Hell, if it weren't for him, Sevilla would easily be up by one or two goals right now.

What a great game to decide the Dutch league!
The Alkmaar supporters must be heart-broken,that close to the title and they blew it!
The Setanta coverage sucked though..no pictures from the other two games AND they edited the second half..B*******!

Bobby
Would you agree this is the best and worst time of the season.
Best - Championships, promotions and relegations being decided everywhere.
Worst - it means the season is almost over!

I'm really struggling to see why Allardyce would go to Man City unless it's part of a takeover deal with masses of $$. Sounds a boring job. I would have thought something bigger maybe in the same city or even abroad? Is this SAF's last season? Could it be that McClaren is out? Martin Jol?

It looks like Bayern aren't going to play Champions League football next season after losing at home to Hamburg. Bremen are trying to keep it interesting by losing to relegation threatened Bielefeld, but Bayern still need a miracle to make it. They are going to have to re-work their budget, and Klose may be too expensive now although the Hargreaves transfer will help. Toni wouldn't come cheap either, so I don't think he's a good option for them.

Could Sam Allardyce`s "personal reasons",be a job offer from Newcastle?
He has taken Bolton as far as they can go,and they still can not sell out the Reebok, and sooner or later you know that the Geordies WILL become a power!
And I will not begrudge them any success they might have(unless it comes at our expense!),for my money, the Geordies are the best supporters in the country!

Or could it be something to do with the Stevens inquiry?

It is a great time of the year with so many storylines and drama. But if you look at the next few months we also have the Gold Cup, the Copa America, the FIFA Under 20 and MLS coming up so its not as if we have to quit cold turkey.

By the way i forgot to mention it yesterday but Canadian viewers of the Toronto FC game on CBC would have caught the FSR's Mitch Peacock moonlighting as the side line reporter - great job Mitch.

Jeremy and me will be heading to Toronto on May 12 to join up with the FSC crew for the Chicage Fire match.

I would be very disappointed if Luca Toni were to go to Bayern Munich. Obviously, it's time for him to sign the big money contract, since he's at his peak, but I wish we could see him come to either the Premiership or one of the big La Liga clubs. I truly think he is one of the great strikers in the game and needs to be playing CL ball, which Bayern aren't going to do.

And not to offend Bundesliga fans, who apparently go to the games in droves, but I want to see the best players in the best leagues, and for my money, that's England and Spain. He would be a great addition for any of the Big 4, or even a Newcastle/Valencia tier club.

Re what to do in the summer break ....

Like Mr. Allardyce - always an inspiration for me - I'm going to "take some time off with my family and reflect on on my life." Maybe then some warm up blogging on a foreign web site in July before returning here in August for the Blunderland v. Allardyce Utd opener.

Sorry Bobby, I actually fell asleep during last night's Galaxy game ... and no, I don't need to know the result - but it did remind me to buy a timcket for Beckham v. Lampard on July 21 (maybe).

Sorry Maradona for me. Better than Pele, Cruyff or Best. Doesn't rank highly on the good people list but he was IMO the best of the lot.

AS for the t shirt - as soon as I get mine!
