LosAngelesChelseaFan - I can see why seeding wouldn't work. For logistics reasons alone the draw has to be made before the replays are resolved. I can remember when second replays occurred just days before the next round.

Bobby – And as someone else pointed out there is a form of seeding that goes on given that the Championship and Premiership teams don’t enter the competition until the 3rd round. It should also be remembered that the Manchester United – Liverpool final of 1996 and the Arsenal – United final in 2005 were awful matches to watch.

Bigdavedisaster - Do you think we will begin to see lower level teams like a Leeds being bought by foreign investors? It seems almost a better investment to buy a team for 25 mil as opposed to 100 mil and use the 75 you saved to bring the club up.

Bobby – I don’t think “foreign” investors are sophisticated enough to understand that the bargains may lie with teams like Leeds and Sunderland. When I say foreign I am referring to buyers who have not been involved in the game previously or don’t come from a football culture.

But you notice that with Mandaric’s move to Leicester (new stadium, decent base of support) and to an extent Bates’ purchase of Leeds that some people are searching for bargains. The problem with Leeds is that they have nearly really escaped the financial mess that Risdale and his living the dream era got them into to.

When you consider that the bottom club next season in the Premiership is going to pocket close to $60M there is a definite incentive to do what you are suggesting.

Henry14- Q1. l have had my reservation on Walcott, because l feel that for all his pace and glorified talent l feel that he is very poor technically. when l look at the type of player he will compete with next season like Carlos Vela and Bendtner who have decent pace but are right up there technically l do not see him making the grade. How do you rate him regarding that he is called the biggest thing since Wayne Rooney?

Q2 Do you think Bellamy and Pennant really have a future at Liverpool given that they have both been linked with booze this week?

Q3.What is your opinion on negative support for football in the UK like the glorification of having 10 men behind the ball. l have seen that a draw is glorified. l was just looking at how pundits glorify such performances do you feel it is these kinds of performances that cause the gulf between big and small clubs increase. Do you think negative tactics are good for the game?

Q4. How do you rate managers and what do you think are the components required to be the best coach in the world? Who do you rate as the best?

Bobby – A1 - Consider the following - Walcott is 17; Arsene Wenger thought highly enough of him to pay Southampton a lot of money; Wenger is giving him a decent amount of time; Wenger has a “fairly good” nose for talent. Based on that I don’t see how you could write him off. I have seen very little of Carlos Vela so I not sure I can comment intelligently except to point out that his playing in the Spanish Second Division not the Premiership.

Bendtner is two years older and also playing at a level below the Premiership. When Walcott played in the Championship he had a strike rate of something like 5 goals in 12 games and Harry Rednapp was playing him through the middle. So with all that said I think when you compare Walcott to Vela and Bendtner you are not comparing like to like so it is an unfair comparison.

I’m not sure who has said he is the next biggest thing to Wayne Rooney – labels like that are hung on lots of players – but I don’t see how that impacts how good Walcott is or will be. When you use that label you are pre-judging a player based on whether or not he is as good as Wayne Rooney as opposed posing the question to is he a good player which is different matter.

Walcott’s style reminds me of Marc Overmars so it will be interesting if Wenger continues to play him wide or moves him to a more central position.

A2 – If every player in England who was linked with booze and misbehavior was dumped there would be even fewer English players in the Premiership than there is now. At the end of the day players can get away with a significant level of repeated bad behavior as long as they are doing the job on the park.

Only occasionally do you see managers move players because of discipline problems – far more players are moved because of poor performances. People remember that Ferguson and Wenger moved McGrath and Merson but they sometimes forget that they held on to Robson and Adams.

A3 – I don’t think draws are glorified (in the UK) but when a team with less skill and talent finds a way to get a point or three of a better team I think they deserve credit for it – no matter how it achieved. The alternative is to go and attack with abandon and get stuffed – that is not going to keep the team’s fans very happy. The job of a coach is to provide his team with the best possible chance to win the game. You have a much better chance of winning the game if the game is scoreless or you are only down by a goal than if you 3-0 down after 20 minutes because you started four up front at Old Trafford. The manager’s obligation to his team and its fans – he is not obliged to send out a sacrificial lamb that provides highlight reel goals for the opposition.

A4 – Rating a manager – 1. Player development  2. Winning trophies  3. Success in the transfer market 4. The team being greater than the sum of the pieces 5. Tactically astute and flexible. 6. Lucky.

For the last few years I have considered Capello to be one of the best if not the best but Real Madrid looks to have proved to be too much for even him.

Luiz Felipe Scolari would certainly be close to the top. Lippi and Ferguson are there as well.

Blueblades - Having witnessed Ronaldo score two goals and provide an assist for Milan in their thrilling 4-3 victory over Siena at the weekend I couldn’t help but wonder why Real Madrid were so eager to sell him, especially considering their lack o####oal threat in recent games.

Do you think that Ronaldo's sale could result in Real finishing 3rd or 4th rather than 1st or even 2nd since the rest of the challenging teams all seem to have consistent goal scorers?

Also which sale of a player in recent years do you think proved most detrimental to the success of the selling side's post sale success?

Bobby – I think it might be one of those situations that Ronaldo will make a big difference to Milan but if he had stayed at Real Madrid he wouldn’t have.

As for a player that moved on – good question. I might go for Fernando Hierro when he left Real Madrid. He may have been nearing the end of his career but he represented something that was very different than the Galacaticos syndrome that was fully embraced post-Fernando.

Commenting on Blueblades comment, I think Real Madrid miss Claude Makalele much more than F Hierro.

Makalele was the balancing figure in the team and his game allowed players like Zidane, Guti and Raul to defend less and concentrate more on attack.

When Claude left, these players had to focus more of their time winning back lost balls, a job Makalele had mastered and was thus very good at.

Congrats to Liverpool on a great victory, but it's not over yet. This CL is turning out to produce some very good games every team that is left can win this trophy so I think the 2nd legs will all be very competetive. Especially that Inter-Valencia game and the Barca-Liverpool game.

When looking at the big picture, what a fantastic night for Spanish clubs in UEFA. FOUR clubs played the second leg of the Cup and ALL four qualified!
Sevilla, Osasuna, Celta Vigo, and Osasuna.

Hmmm, who was it that said that 'La Liga' clubs just aren't cutting it this season? :)

Meanwhile, I look forward to the Madrid derby, even though it has snoozefest written all over it...which means, of course, that now the goals will be pouring in this one. This will be a tough test for my Atleti. Ixnay on mentioning last week's 3-1 defeat at Sevilla, please...

I'll also watch Getafe v Sevilla-- this sounds like it'll be a great game.

In terms of EPL, I actually look forward to the Charlton/West Ham game. A draw wouldn't suit neither.

Spurs v Bolton also sounds interesting.

Re: the exchange of taunts between Wenger and Mourinho. So neither of them ranks high in your list of great managers, but who is higher, Bobby? Perhaps pragmatism and idealism are tow extremes of the continum where the top managers fall on. Mourinho, Capello, Lippi, etc. close to one end and Wenger, van Gaal, Krujif, to the other, who are destined to win fewer trophies than the former group because of their pursuit of style. However, their contributions to football weigh much more than any collection of cups. Are they in danger of extinction?

Atleti;
Recent steady improvement by Atletico and with Real (not a fan) and Beckham (am a fan) coming back on form the Madrid derby has all the makings of a cracking affair and worth a theoretical 6 points to the winner.
However I am betting Los Rojiblancos of Sevilla (am a big fan) will win La Liga.

This weekends EPL action has many mid-table battles also with some 6 point matches and even relegation at risk. I predict a few surprises here.

What is very attractive is the Championship. Fast developing into a very competitive run in for many clubs. Who would have thought Keano and Sunderland would be where they are? And surely this is the year where Preston can finally gain promotion.

As for the Carling Cup....Let's hope for some end to end football and a minimum of theatrics and post game I told you so's.

Real DID NOT deserve a point from this game. Casillas kept Real alive: this could've easily been 3-1 for my boys.

That said, I'm very proud of Atleti. It was a fantastic, focused performance-- they kept pushing forward. This was, perhaps, their greatest home display.

Rio:

Yes, terrible offside call.

In terms of officials, I think it depends: there are decent and appalling officials in both leagues.

After watching four replays of the Perea goal I would vote the linesman got it wrong with the offside flag and to compound it the ref did not call the simultaneous penalty against Emerson.
Atletico were denied the three points courtesy of the officials’ ineptitude.

Also much ado today in the EL Championship. Now eight teams at the top separated by four points! Sunderland continue to climb but my favored Preston sliding in the other direction.

Cheers

Enjoy he game tomorrow gunner44, Henry14 and RioCharlie et al. May the best team win. Should be a good game. (Even though no-one ever figured out why this competition exists! Something to do with $$$.).
... now if they're looking to get rid of fixture congestion by removing irrelevant games ...

Bobby does the Carling cup give ther winner a UEFA cuo place? Speaking of which, they should have the winner of the UEFA Cup get a Champions league spot the following season. It might give it some meaning. Whatdya think?

THx LA; heres to an entertaining match!

I agree the officating is a game to game process but in my subjective view, and i watch twice as much epl as la liga, to me the overall quality in la liga is markedly worse.

Ive enjoy Laliga, dont get me wrong, and the title race certainly has much more drama and interest to it, and I love the derby's all are fierce battles. I do hope they can get rid of the stupid racist ugliness that plagues spanish football though.

Looking foward to the game LA and I do hope the best team will be Arsenal. Let me warn you though those young lads are harder to beat than the senior team because what they lack in experince they make up for in their hunger to win. Just ask Liverpool, Spurs and Bolton.

Man U fans better pray that they don't loose that Ronaldo boy coz he sure is one hell of a player, even Rooney can't touch Ronaldo. As an Arsenal fan though I wouldn't mind if he left Man U.

Fun first 45, Chelsea's grateful to have a world class keeper keeping them in the game.

Whats up with those #### chelsea fans throwing shuyte at Fab4? Shows the class Chelsea fans bring to the table, what a disgrace.

Well, well, well, that was some final!

Typifies arsenal season, looks great but at the end wasteful. Think the final will be remembered for arsenal playing the better of the 2 for 75 minutes, chelsea with their steel taking it at the end, and a wild finish.

Im glad I cant stand man ure so much that I cant despise chelsea as much as man ure! I think chelsea know they are in for it from these and the other arsenal lads, and judgung by the knock down rule, and all those blue shirts on the ground, arsenal look the physically toiugher side too. good job boys.

go gunners

Thought it was an entertaining match once again a key decision in the game went against Arsenal in a final Drogba was offside but that's life in football. Hope all the ref bad luck is past as and we will have better luck in the FA cup & CL.

But how about the ending, good to see that Arsenal young guns have some fight in them. What did Ade do to deserve a red? Lampard looked like he clearly pushed someone and only gets a yellow. In the end though I am bitter that we lost yet another final that we looked like we would have won. That done we have a big game on Wed we move on.

Looking at the replay it looks like Fat Frank started the fight at the end when he stuck his fat face where it didnt belong trying to bully the young lads, and cesc, as ex barca hughes will tell you, aint gonna back down.

good luck trying to win anything without terry

Gunner,

Arsenal played great, traore and diaby bossed them today and when they went off we seemed to lose our shape. It is great to see walcott score, from inside, a place where most think he will ultimately play.

This is turning into a tough year, as again the gunners have the better of the play, create more chances, but their wastefulness comes back to haunt them, a buig part of the learning curve is for them to put games like this and the other dozen or so like it away when the chances come to you.

As per his normal operating procedure these days, Arsene Wenger, the manager of Arsenal, descended into a pre-match verbal attack on his opposite number, this week being Chelsea's Jose Mourinho.

In his comments, he said that "plenty" of managers who had won the European Cup/Champions League would not be considered great managers.

I was baffled what he could mean by such a comment. Surely any man who leads a team to the pinnacle of European club soccer would have to considered a great leader.

Whether it's getting the most out of a smaller club with fewer resources or getting a room full of superstars to play as a team, winning the big cup is a monumental achievement worthy of respect and admiration.

But clearly not with Arsene Wenger. Obviously he knows. Well, nearly knows anyway, what it takes to win this thing. And certainly Arsenal know what it takes to lift European silverware. Spurs fans always remind them that north London clubs have won a combined five European trophies and Arsenal are very proud of the two they've won.

So much of the call and response of this site is about all things Arsenal(surely the world's best fourth-place club). Perhaps you could channel Arsene's thinking for us and let us in on who is in his group of not-great European Cup winning managers.

Or would asking him directly in an interview be too much of a departure from the normal routine of cheerleading and info-tainment we see currently in all areas of FOX sports

A good game, with the play probably more important than the result. Walcott's goal and Drogba's second were crackers. Chelsea's holding off defending suited Arsenal's play and if they learn how to win they'll be dangerous. It would be an interesting repeat if they were to play again in the FA Cup semis or final especially with Gilberto back. The comedy scene at the end was ridiculous/hilarious. Mikel is a hot head. He pulled a shirt but didn't do anything else. Fabregas seemed the worst trouble maker and didn't get sent off. They all seemed to calm down after the final whistle.

I don't think JT has recovered from his back problem and his dive to head the ball was almost suicidal. There's something strange going on there.

Good to hear JT is good that was a nasty kick to the head. I guess Theo won't be getting his Operation because Diaby got injured and word is Toure and Ade are suspended for 3 games(if someone can confirm whether this is true please). I hope the Fa doesn't use the vidoes to suspend more players coz that's the last thing we need with all the games we have to play.
