Latruth - Ask Jeremy about meeting Charlie Cooke at the convention. I introduced them and I'm sure Charlie would gladly be interviewed for the show (particularly by a countryman). He is a regular viewer.

Bobby - It is funny that you should mention that. Just before the broadcast of “Centre Circle”, I took a quick wander around the trade show hoping that I might bump into Charlie. I only had about 15 minutes and the trade show was so large that I doubt I covered even one quarter of the booths.  Not that he would have recognized me anyway.

After all, I was just one of a bunch of kids who used to play football on the street outside his house when he lived in Dundee.  Two of my best friends while at primary school (elementary in North America) lived close to him-one next door and one across the road.  His home became a natural magnet for any budding player who harboured the typical dream that somehow he would be discovered.  I remember that when Charlie received a cap for Scotland (under-23 against Wales, I think) he gave his Scotland top to my friend of course who brought it to school to show everyone.

Charlie was signed from Aberdeen to replace Alan Gilzean when Gilzean moved to the Spurs. He didn't stay at Dundee too long-under two years, I think-and moved to Chelsea.  He was an incredible player - the type of player who could destroy any defense in the world and still have the opposition's supporters applaud him.

After he had left Dundee I remember going to Hampden Park in 1968 to see Scotland versus England. The game finished 1-1 though Scotland was the better team -or more to the point Charlie dominated the game with an magical performance that few could have replicated.

I managed to get a copy of his recent autobiography from the UK but have not had a chance to read it yet as I passed it onto my father first.

Hopefully, I can make it to Baltimore next year for the 2008 NSCAA Convention and get to meet him and have him sign the book.

Henry14 - l will have to disagree with you about the Beckham, issue, people forget that Madrid wanted him to stay and he refused, so l feel Capello had to start to prepare for life without Beckham, and l feel that as much as Wenger did with Cole before the move to Chelsea l feel Capello should do the same way, due to the commitment reasons.

Venti_Vidi_ ViciHow can you say Capello's reaction appears petty? First of all it wasn't Capello's sole decision, but that of the technical committee, and I'm sure the decision was made carefully. Beckham announced this deal publicly before even informing Real Madrid, who had already tabled a two year extension offer. I think Capello and Mijatovic have displayed considerable restraint given the circumstances. How do you think Sir Alex or Jose would've reacted?

Bobby - It seems that Real Madrid wanted Beckham to stay so much that it took them over a year to offer a contract and then we find out from President Calderon that Real Madrid did not want him anyway - “our technical staff were right not to extend his contract.”

We also have to consider that Real Madrid leaked the story to the press before Beckham signed for LA that three players were dispensable-Beckham, Ronaldo and Cassano. From my perspective Real Madrid has nothing to complain about. Essentially the technical committee is blaming Real Madrid's recent performances on three players who have hardly spent any time on the park this season. You are right it is not petty - it is much worse it is downright dishonest.

In a ruthless business everyone has to take care of themselves - something that Real Madrid has never hesitated to do. Real Madrid's self preening is nauseating at times. And to cap it off this is the same Fabio Capello who signed a contract with Milan while he was with Real Madrid in the 90s.

Numerous other coaches have had to deal with the same situation-players agreeing to move to other clubs after the conclusion of the season-and have managed the situation quite nicely. But of course Real Madrid is different.

As for how Sir Alex or Jose would react I expect that they would look at what was best for team performance and not get involved with rubbish about insulting the institution.

The last word to Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard - "you always have to look to the interests of the team – everyone wants to win things, and if a player has a contract he can still keep on working."

AlexMorph - Given that Arsenal and Man U turn over their youth talents quickly--bringing in new ones, selling others, developing a bunch--are there any players who it surprises you do not get shipped off?

Bobby - Not particularly. On the other side of the equation I was surprised when Arsenal sold Matthew Upson a couple years ago.

Atleti femaleIt’s a bit surprising to me that Villa hasn’t been involved in any major transfers so far. Someone told me that O'Neill was known for his last-minute transfers at Celtic, which unnerved many supporters. Is anyone familiar with Celtic to confirm this?

Bobby - Your information is correct, Martin O'Neill has always been a bit of a last-minute Charlie as far as the transfer market is concerned.

Djnima - A question regarding Ronaldo (el gordo) to Milan. It's clear they need goals but do you think he still has some phenom left in him?

Bobby - I think Ronaldo can still score goals.  Perhaps the question really is does he want to anymore.

Finally, as for predictions, it is not really my thing. Let's face it, you have a one in three chance of being right.

I try to keep predictions to a minimum and generally only when I think there could be a real surprise or when I am lost for anything else to say!!

In Canada the Saturday EPL matches are broadcast on Sportsnet and they do weekly predictions. It is riveting stuff…… Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal to win - how unusual!!!

Funnily enough Capello seems to have changed his tone somewhat with regards to using Beckham for the remainder of the season.

This may be a negotiating ploy now that the Galaxy are rumored to be trying to free him from his contract in time for April.
I agree that Real had nothing to complain about after labelling Beckham as expendable. Beckham, as well as Ronaldo and Cassano, have each only started five games or less, so I think Real maybe feel that these very talented players should have had a much bigger impact on Real's season so far. But then, has Capello given them a fair chance?
It is starting to appear like Ronaldo may be on his way to AC Milan. Apparently Milan do not intend to pay a transfer fee, so Ronaldo and his agent are trying to mutually terminate his contract with Real. He would sign a new 18 month contract with Milan. I am not thrilled with short term solutions like this, but at least it will spite Moratti even though Inter have not use for him. Do you see Ronaldo contributing much at Milan?

MSL is targeting money on a designated player, but I believe that the poor level of game commentating is one of the critical obstacle to the growth of the sport in the US - I sometimes turned off the sound during some world cup broadcast. No sense spending money to put together a first class orchestra, then broadcast the music over a two-bit audio system. Bring us help!!

aptnow - Agreed. I like the metaphor too. I think broadcasters are much more important to the presentation of the product than many would believe.

re: Capello/Calderon, what a couple of boneheads. Henry, VVV, gotta disagree with the two of you here. Unless Iker Casillas is lying to us, Beckham has been a stand-up member of Real. VVV, you mentioned that he announced the decision before telling the club. I say who cares? He's not moving an inch for months! Not only that, but after Capello's decision (which reminded me of a first grade schoolboy taunting "You can't come to my birthday party anymore!"), did Becks pull a Cole/Gallas and throw a fit? Not even close. The mere fact that Capello is having a 'change of heart' about this decision is very telling of how wrong it was.

Now with regards to Senor Calderon... don't even get me started. The comments themselves were something else: "Nobody wanted Beckham, we didn't either etc etc". I'm sorry but that is DELUSIONAL. That blatantly contrasts every media reporting about him in the last 3 months. Now, the fact that he made them in public... that, my friend, is idiocy raised to an art form. President of one of history's greatest clubs, surrounded in controversy, and you think no one is going to spill your tirade to the media?? Estas emborrachado, amigo? I can't even believe this. If you want the players at your club to be better professionals, look inward you jerk. Oh, by the way, labeling your players as prima donnas and second rate actors is more than "annoying". Show him the door, Real.

aptnow,
Amen brother. Couldn't agree with you more. I really like it when FSC broadcasts an EPL game, they leave the commentary the way it should be. Now, if only ABC could fork out the big bucks to get someone like Andy Gray to do the commentary of the games.

There's nothing worse than abrasive, excitable announcing to detract from watching a game. Case in point: Ligue 1 -- I think Emmanuel Petit is the colour commentator. ABC's is awful for MLS and worse for the World Cup. They need an understated, thoughtful person like John Helm, and perhaps Klinsi as the colour guy.

Ciao "Ralph" Lauren! What a great player for the gunners these past 6 yrs. His guile and tenacity will be missed. WIth the size of the squad as it is, wenge really had to options, although I wished he went to france or spain. instead its highbury on the coast, good luck ralph, well miss you.

Arsenal had a deal in place with the hammers for our freddie, but the sweede freaked out! demanded all kinda buyout money etc. hes like sampson in that he lost his magic when he cut and quit dying that hair of his.

Bobby,

Not sure this is your area or not, but im trying to get my arms around club valuations. I saw dounness make a 20gbp bid, since rejected, and the owner i thought i read valued the club at 40 gbp. I know quinn bought sunderland late last year do you know what the valuation was in that deal? What did Lerner pay for villa?

What i cant reconcile is that the payouts for premiership start at 27gbp and go up. Seems like if you could buy a championship side on the cheap, pump a few pounds for a good manager and some players, get in the prem there is a good deal of upside to this. I understand risks involved but seems a steady run of premiereship can really grow a clubs value.

The parrallel i draw r with nfl franchises that have seem there club's valuation rise pretty much in proportion to the nfl tv deals, maybe even at a slightly higher rate. Clubs sold 10 yrs ago in the nfl for 150-180 million us and r now goin for upwards of 800 million. Can u see a similar rise in the value of premiership sides?

riocharlie - I don't think you can use a formula driven valuation model for Premiership teams (or other non-North American soccer teams) as we rarely know the full details of the bid. For example is the bidder willing to take on all or any existing debt; does the club own its own ground; often the bidder throws in a transfer kitty in order to inflate the bid number etc. I would think that the NFL is a more generic model and I doubt that too many NFL franchises are carrying "unfunded" debt.

The announced purchase price for Villa was $128M I believe. In theory identifying a Championship team, buying cheap, investing and gaining a Premiership place is a solid theory but football - particularly in Europe - is not a normal profit generating business.

In the NFL you are almost sure to make money - that is not the case in the Premiership. However, valuations will continue to increase in the short term for no other reason than that the Premiership has a global following and there are a lot of very rich people out there who want to own and be part of it.

I must admit I find it more than a bit ironic reading a stream of smart #### articles from the English media about the Beckham deal and the state of the MLS while the Premiership is being taken over by foreigners.

Once Liverpool is sold only Arsenal of the big 4 will remain with UK investors/owners.

Tayport, and the ironic bit about Arsenal is that out of a squad of 45, only five are Englishmen! I'm only familiar with Hoyte and Walcott. I don't know anything about Connolly, Randall, and Lansbury.

Tayport,

Thnx thats why im having a little trouble understandiong it. The NFL has very strident and rigid controls on their frnachises in regard to ownrship/debts etc. But valuations really boil down to the revenue that can be generated versus the costs associated with generating those revenues. Im guessing that TV revenues account for a significant, maybe 35-40% of a clubs revenue. With that now tripled, and the costs have not tripled, then club valuations are going to rise.

I also know that business men, ie the dubai guy, lerner, glazier are not in the non profit business so clubs are in fact turning profits, clubs make money in one of 2 ways for owners they generate an operating profit from ongoing operations and thru capital appreciation of the underlying assets. Have the turn over of clubs in the top leagues in england been about the same, ie the number changing hands this year the same as in years past or is it higher? It seems higher to me but its just a feeling dont really know.

Certainly the speculation about possible takeovers is greater than is normal. I think when you assess the deals you have to also take into consideration the net operating position but also any capital appreciation. The "new owners" may not turn an operating profit but they will likely be holding an appreciating asset given the Premiership global reach.

We have yet to see the full impact of technology on the rights fees for sports and the Premiership is in a position to benefit from technology more than any other league or sports organization (except the FIFA World Cup).

The NFL sells in North America and that's about it - it is clear that the NFL will never be anything else but a secondary sport in other parts of the world. For soccer it is quite different - global reach equals lots of money and the Premiership is ideally positioned to benefit.

You all have to take into consideration the profile that owning a Premiership provides an owner and how many other business deals can be done because of what they own that might have otherwise slipped away.

Warner Communications / Cosmos in the 70's was a model for the 21st century it is just that it was never controlled.

I can think of five variables off the top (a) current debt, (b) who will be responsible for settling or inheriting the debt, (c) what other assets are being bought i.e. ground (d) how desperate are the existing owners to sell (e) cash offer or an offer to pay the purchase price from future earnings.

Despite the so-called expertise on FSWR, I was amazed that no-one could see the obvious statement being made by the unconscious mind of Glenn Johnson. His fraudulent switching of a cheap toilet seat for an expensive one and deliberately being caught was his way of making a statement to Abramovich: "If you farm me out to 'Arry's seaside carnival and trade up for expensive stars who don't perform, then Chelsea will go down the toilet."

Next week Bobby will be explaining that Man Utd’s purchase of Hargreaves is just SAF’s way of telling Michael Carrick that he’s not the only $35m purchase he can buy that will make no difference.

BTW, Bobby, I don't know why you think Chelsea will beat Liverpool, but I'll have some of what you're drinkking. Enjoy the weekend folks.

P.S. returning to the first topic, I had the great good fortune to watch Charile Cooke mesmerizing defenders. It was almost like watching some kind of tightrope act where the defenders would eventually lose balance, fall off and Charlie would sail by.

Did scheva do anything to merit an earlier inlcusion? Apart from committing a foul in his first minute, he did a damn good impersonation of the invisible man.

This so called crisis at chelsie is all of their own making. WHat other team in any division goes into a long campaign with 2 central defenders? I think the arrogance has caught up to them.

Im glad not only as a gooner, come on boys, but today's performance should ensure more of the fantastic drama weve been treated to recently coming out of king's road.

Cant wait for Manure-arsenal tomorrow.

I would love to see the following but i know itll never happen:

Carrick has the ball for maure and spots ronaldo running down the left, eboue spots the run and head out that way. Carrick delivers a picture perfect pass just in front of ronaldo and eboue, now running side by side. With the ball in front eqau distance between the two, ronaldo sticks out his right leg, ohhh 2 inches short of the ball, eboue sticks out his left and again 2 inches shy but centimeters from ronaldo's. For a split second they each look deep into the eyes of the other and then simultaneously reach for their untouched ankles and go sprwaling to the pitch wrything in agony, as the ball rolls harmlessly out of play. Running to the fallen warriors, barely able to control his laughter, the ref issues em both straight reds!

Would be fun butll never happen:(

That is literary brilliance - love how you combine inches and centimeters, fact and fiction, in your vivid dream.

I don't know about you guys but I think the problem with Chelski is that they have no true midfielders, players who are good with the ball at their feet who can distribute the ball, leaders who can make things happen.

Can anyone out there provide me with Chelsea's Charlie Cooke's jersey number when he had all those fine years across the pond, as well as his number when he joined NASL? I, too, am a Cooke and this would make a sweet gift to myself or other family members. I appreciate any and all responses and I thank you for your time.
