Fleetwood Town faces Warrington Town in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup tomorrow October 14. WE have covered how Fleetwood has arrived at this stage in earlier blogs and they look to be favourites to move on again.
Warrington Town has beaten Yorks Amet 5-1, Long Eaton United 3-1 (both away from home) then needed a replay and extra time to beat Kendal Town 3-2 after an initial 1-1 draw at Kendal.
Warrington Town plays in UniBond First Division – the same league as Fleetwood’s opponents in the previous round Goole AFC. Warrington is currently five points below Goole but with two games less played.
Fleetwood plays at one level above in the UniBond Premier Division and they sit just above halfway. Richard Allen looks to be the man for Warrington Town to watch considering he has already scored 12 goals this season already.
Scores so far. Extra Preliminary Round Jarrow Roofing Boldon C.A. 5-2 Billingham Synthonia. Preliminary Round Jarrow Roofing Boldon C.A 5-4 Thackley F.C First Qualifying Round Fleetwood Town 3-0 Jarrow Roofing Boldon C.A. Second Qualifying Round Fleetwood Town 4-2 Goole AFC
Bobby:
I read an interesting story in an Italian paper this week about West Auckland Town FC who, last Saturday, made their debut (in front of 89 spectators!) in this season’s FA Vase, which I gather is sort of a FA Cup for the very lower leagues of English football.
Apparently West Auckland Town FC are famous for winning both editions of the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy about a century ago, which was one of the first international football competitions. The account detailed how, in the second edition West Auckland Town FC traveled to Turin again, to defend their title and defeated Juventus 6-1 in the final, and claimed the trophy permanently.
It was a fascinating article, from how the tournament was created, to how a team of miners from the Northern League wound up representing England, and then beat out a field of leading European teams to claim the trophy, twice!
I did some research and it seems like the story of West Auckland Town FC is truly unique. I’m sure it’s nice to know that their legend lives on in Turin as well.
PS. I’m sure you must be one of very few people in this part of the world who have ever heard of West Auckland Town FC.
Venti_vidi_vici - I have seen mention of the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy but I don't remember the West Auckland story. What a great story. I checked wikipedia and apparently there was a TV movie made of the story in the early 80's starring Dennis Waterman a well-known English actor.
That area of England was and still is a real hotbed for football. There is also a team called Bishop Auckland from the same area that are legendary. When there was still an FA Amateur Cup they were regular winners. They eventually scraped the idea of professional and amateur and that is, I believe, when the FA Amateur Cup morphed into the the FA Vase.

I see Freddy Adu's name make a few headlines in Europe today (Gazzetta dello Sport, Eurosport.com), with claims that he will be playing in Europe next year. He is quoted as saying that he is currently talking to Chelsea, Man U and Real.
This seems to be a recurring story - is there any more truth to it now? How good is Freddy Adu, compared to other wonder kids like Walcott, Messi, Alex, etc.? What sort of contract does he have with MLS? Will he really switch his football allegiance to Ghana?
Until Freddy Adu becomes a regular contributing memeber of the US national team - or any other national team - or plays regularly for one of the world's top club teams then he is just another youngster with potential.
Speaking of 'youngsters with potential', what is your opinion on Obi Mikel? Personally, I haven't been too impressed with him the times that I've seen him play, and yesterday before being sent off he was virtually invisible. He must be doing something right in training for them to have paid so much money and keep SWP out of the side, but his nerves get the better of him on the pitch. So far Kalou has looked like a far better signing.
Fleetwood Town won 2-0 against Warrington Town in front of 567 fans at home. Their fourth qualifying round tie will be at home again against Wisbech Town. Wisbech is coming off of a 2-1 away win against Solihull Borough. Wisbech plays in the Eastern Counties Premier League, which is two divisions lower than Fleetwood Town's Unibond Premier League.
