After 45 minutes
Jul 01, 2006 | 9:03AM | report this

A very evenly contested first half. England settled more quickly into the game but after 15 minutes Portugal started to establish their passing game. It looks as if Maniche is playing the Deco role for Portugal. England seems to be attacking with a bit more conviction while Portugal appears to be taking a more patient route.

Weak spots - Valente looks to be very suspect but the problem is that when Neville goes forward to attack and there is a turnover in possession Portugal plays it into the space and causes England problems.

Hargreaves is giving England a solid look but Gerrard and Lampard are still not forward far enough to support Rooney.

You have to wonder how long Figo can go in this one. He’s played a lot of football in the last three weeks. Pauleta has hardly kicked the ball while Ronaldo when he cuts inside on Neville is probably Portugal’s biggest threat.

Blether” is a slang word that is used in parts of Scotland and people who “blether” are called “bletherers”. To “blether” means you talk for the sake of talking. Marcelo Balboa is without a doubt a bletherer.

“England is lucky to have a young man on the bench like Sol Campbell, of course he’s not so young anymore” was my favourite this half.

“These countries have past history” wasn’t bad either.

But it is disturbing when you have a former World Cup player who can’t tell the difference between a dive and embellishment. A push by Tiago on Cole was not a dive it was embellishment but still a foul.

The only problem with Ronaldo is that when he gets in space, he has not been looking for options...only looking for goal and he has not been finding the target.

I think England needed to reshuffle the midfield in this game. Lampard is just not having a good go of it.

The ref isn't punishing England for nothing.

no time to look at the build-up to the red, but wasn't he being fouled prior to the ref's call? ... a dose of bad luck ... who is this Balboa-don't hear him on Univision!

It doesn't matter if he was being fouled or not. If he was, it is retaliation and he still gets a red card.

Oh dear lord - thank you for addressing the Balboa thing. Can anybody out there pull some strings and get him off the air?

I'm glad the English won't be able to blame Hargreaves for this loss. He was one of the few bright spots at forward or midfield. Terry/Cole were excellent in defense. I can't imagine we'll ever see Crouch at international matches anymore.

I think in Peter Crouch you have the perfect foil to Wayne Rooney. To dismiss Crouch is wrong because he needs a 2nd striker to work with to play his best. Flick-on headers, one two's, and back to goal while rooney comes through. In this case i think the English team cannot be blamed. Who changed the system on what seems like june 8. Who picked 2 injured strikers and another player who fills up water bottles for Henry, Lehmann, and Ljungberg on a daily basis. Who refused to sub out players who werent on their game. Who refused to change his god awful tactic. Who was already thinking about playing Brazil. Sven is the ONLY one to blame. Maybe Brazil should blame him for his comments about the semifinal match v England. Sven cursed Brazil too

Not sure about the 3-5-1...at least as played by England. Never saw Lampard/Gerrard get forward enough because I am sure Sven told them to be conservative. England did not deserve to win in my opinion. A shame because France put on a clinic in the second game how a 3-5-1 can be played - Makelele and Vieria were bulldogs, with Zidane pulling the strings. Call Rupert and get the rights for 2010 because listening to Balboa makes me dumber...but I need the HD so am stuck with him!

jamezyjamez - We will let you have one player or are you just assuming that referees wil send someone off?
