Italy 1-0 Ukraine
Jun 30, 2006 | 12:51PM | report this

This game is so far without any redeeming qualities from a neutral point of view.

The Ukraine gave Zambrotta far too much space on the goal and it is difficult to see how they are going to find a way back into this game.

We invented a drinking game based on how many times John Harkes says "Certainly" and "As Well" Sometimes old Harksie works them both into a sentence, then it's two shots. How did the most important sporting event in the world get stuck with these bush league babbling announcers ? Like the U.S. team, they could do with working their way up to some announcing positions in Europe before they sully the World Cup with their extraneous and repetitive babble

I am sorry to say, you give up an early goal to an Italian national team or any of the top teams from Italy, Juventus, AC Milan etc. it is inevitable you have to work three times as hard to win. Italian defenses are a top and tuff notch to break. Ukraine, your road may have ended with 84 mins remaining in the game.

Hopefully with this goal and Totti shaping back into form the Italians can make a serious fun for the trophy. Traditionally, slow starters, if this talented squad can get rolling, Lippi's boys can take this thing back to Rome.
Regardless of what happened against the Aussies, this trophy would be with out scandal!!!!

If the prolific Luca Toni can continue causing havoc to defenses of this nature.......
Watch out for Italy!!!

Hoping for a Luca Toni hat-trick or Zambrotta brace. Two of my favorite players around. Germany vs Italy is shaping up reeeeal nice!

Bobby, I think if you took 11 members of the Tartan Army and placed them on the pitch in Hamburg, even THEY'D beat Ukraine. Ukraine looks weak!

Zambrotta is one of the most underated players around. He is consistent, two-footed, and quick.

Chris - then we would have 11 players throwing up instead of just Beckham.

Yes, and the Tartan Army would drink 15 pints before the game, and still beat Ukraine...is that the team from Malta (no offence) with the wrong shirts on??

Bobby,

I couldn't agree more on Zambrotta. Great defender and today also assist for Toni. I actually saw Totti finally make some good plays + assist for goals.

They will get a chance as Scotland is in the same Euro qualifying section as Ukraine as well as Italy and France. Ooouch.

Hah! Touche, Bobby, Touche.

So we have Germany/Italy in one bracket. If Germany can get out of their side, and England gets through as well, we might just witness one of the biggest sporting events ever. But I don't want to get ahead of myself.

England 2, Portugal 1. England through on a Lampard strike.

Brazil 3, France 1.

England then takes revenge on Brazil on penalties. Payback for 2002 and 1962.

Yes, where is the Tartan Army, by the way? At the local, I guess...

Chris - and 1970.
PZ - there have been a number of sightings in Germany. After failing to make the last two finals I think the Tartan Army has just decided to turn up anyway. There's football, there's alcohol - that is two out of three.

Ah right, forgot 1970. Still trying to get down my footie history. My soccer memory began in 1994 with the Cup here in the US. Honestly I'm still learning about everything that happened before!

Chris,

ok.ok...come down to Earth!! no way England will beat Portugal tomorrow. If they somehow will manage to get through (maybe another classic free kick by Beckham and that's it!!) they will then be kicked out by Brazil.

But I understand you. At this point we are all cheering for our teams. After tomorrow only 4 teams left!!!

Bobby stop being fair and professional!!! jk
Great analysis during the whole WC yours.

I second that. Great work on FSC, Bobby. I have my TiVo set up to record the show nightly.

And fellas, while I hope England can pull it off, I admit that it will be quite a daunting task, given that face that the Portuguese and Brazilians are such stiff competition.
